Through the Maximum principle we define the principal eigenvalue for a class of fully-nonlinear operators that are the non-variational equivalent of the p-Laplacian. We also obtain some a priori Holder estimates for non-negative solutions below that eigenvalue.
We study a nonlinear, nonlocal eigenvalue problem driven by the fractional p-Laplacian with an indefinite, singular weight chosen in an optimal class. We prove the existence of an unbounded sequence of positive variational eigenvalues and alternative characterizations of the first and second eigenvalues. Then, by means of such characterizations, we prove strict decreasing monotonicity of such eigenvalues with respect to the weight function.
We study the perturbation by a critical term and a $(p-1)$-superlinear subcritical nonlinearity of a quasilinear elliptic equation containing a singular potential. By means of variational arguments and a version of the concentration-compactness principle in the singular case, we prove the existence of solutions for positive values of the parameter under the principal eigenvalue of the associated singular eigenvalue problem.
We study an eigenvalue problem involving a degenerate and singular elliptic operator on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$. We prove the existence of an unbounded and increasing sequence of eigenvalues. Our study generalizes to the case of degenerate and singular operators a result of A. Szulkin and M. Willem.
We provide fundamental properties of the first eigenpair for fractional $p$-Laplacian eigenvalue problems under singular weights, which is related to Hardy type inequality, and also show that the second eigenvalue is well-defined. We obtain a-priori bounds and the continuity of solutions to problems with such singular weights with some additional assumptions. Moreover, applying the above results, we show a global bifurcation emenating from the first eigenvalue, the Fredholm alternative for non-resonant problems, and obtain the existence of infinitely many solutions for some nonlinear problems …
In this paper we extend some existence's results concerning the generalized eigenvalues for fully nonlinear operators singular or degenerate. We consider the radial case and we prove the existence of an infinite number of eigenvalues, simple and isolated. This completes the results obtained by the author with Isabeau Birindelli for the first eigenvalues in the radial case, and the results obtained for the Pucci's operator by Busca Esteban and Quaas and for the $p$-Laplace operator by Del Pino and Manasevich.
The main scope of this article is to define the concept of principal eigenvalue for fully non linear second order operators in bounded domains that are elliptic and homogenous. In particular we prove maximum and comparison principle, Holder and Lipschitz regularity. This leads to the existence of a first eigenvalue and eigenfunction and to the existence of solutions of Dirichlet problems within this class of operators.
We characterize the validity of the Maximum Principle in bounded domains for fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic operators in terms of the sign of a suitably defined generalized principal eigenvalue. Here, maximum principle refers to the non-positivity of viscosity subsolutions of the Dirichlet problem. This characterization is derived in terms of a new notion of generalized principal eigenvalue, which is needed because of the possible degeneracy of the operator, admitted in full generality. We further discuss the relations between this notion and other natural generalizations of the classical…
We study the fully nonlinear elliptic equation $F(D^2u,Du,u,x) = f$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω$, under the assumption the nonlinearity $F$ is uniformly elliptic and positively homogeneous. Recently, it has been shown that such operators have two principal "half" eigenvalues, and that the corresponding Dirichlet problem possesses solutions, if both of the principal eigenvalues are positive. In this paper, we prove the existence of solutions of the Dirichlet problem if both principal eigenvalues are negative, provided the "second" eigenvalue is positive, and generalize the anti-maximum princi…
We investigate nodal radial solutions to semilinear problems of type \[\begin{cases}-Δu = f(|x|,u) \qquad & \text{ in } Ω, \newline u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{cases} \] where $Ω$ is a bounded radially symmetric domain of $\mathbb R^N$ ($N\ge 2$) and $f$ is a real function. We characterize both the Morse index and the degeneracy in terms of a singular one dimensional eigenvalue problem, which is studied in full detail. The presented approach also describes the symmetries of the eigenfunctions. This characterization enables to give a lower bound for the Morse index in a forthcoming work…
This paper investigates the link between the Maximum Principle and the sign of the (generalized) principal eigenvalue for elliptic operators in unbounded domains. Our approach covers the cases of Dirichlet, Neumann, and (indefinite) Robin boundary conditions and treat them in a unified way. For a certain class of elliptic operators (including the class of selfadjoint operators), we establish that the positivity of the principal eigenvalue is a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of the Maximum Principle. If the principal eigenvalue is zero, no general answer holds; instead, und…
We consider the problem of finding a real number lambda and a function u satisfying the PDE max{lambda -Δu -f,|Du|-1}=0, for all x in R^n. Here f is a convex, superlinear function. We prove that there is a unique lambda* such that the above PDE has a viscosity solution u satisfying u(x)/|x|->1 as |x| tends to infinity. Moreover, we show that associated to lambda^* is a convex solution u^* with D^2u^* uniformly bounded and give two min-max formulae for lambda^*. lambda^* has a probabilistic interpretation as being the least, long-time averaged ("ergodic") cost for a singular control problem inv…
In this paper we study optimal lower and upper bounds for functionals involving the first Dirichlet eigenvalue $λ_{F}(p,Ω)$ of the anisotropic $p$-Laplacian, $1<p<+\infty$. Our aim is to enhance how, by means of the $\mathcal P$-function method, it is possible to get several sharp estimates for $λ_{F}(p,Ω)$ in terms of several geometric quantities associated to the domain. The $\mathcal P$-function method is based on a maximum principle for a suitable function involving the eigenfunction and its gradient.
This paper classifies the set of supersolutions of a general class of periodic-parabolic problems in the presence of a positive supersolution. From this result we characterize the positivity of the underlying resolvent operator through the positivity of the associated principal eigenvalue and the existence of a positive strict supersolution. Lastly, this (scalar) characterization is used to characterize the strong maximum principle for a class of periodic-parabolic systems of cooperative type under arbitrary boundary conditions of mixed type.

By using a characterization of the Morse index and the degeneracy in terms of a singular one dimensional eigenvalue problem given in a previous paper, we give a lower bound for the Morse index of radial solutions to Hénon type problems \[ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = |x|^αf(u) \qquad & \text{ in } Ω, u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \] where $Ω$ is a bounded radially symmetric domain of $\mathbb R^N$ ($N\ge 2$), $α>0$ and $f$ is a real function. From this estimate we get that the Morse index of nodal radial solutions to this problem goes to $\infty$ as $α\to \infty$. Concer…
The paper deals with the Neumann spectral problem for a singularly perturbed second order elliptic operator with bounded lower order terms. The main goal is to provide a refined description of the limit behaviour of the principal eigenvalue and eigenfunction. Using the logarithmic transformation we reduce the studied problem to additive eigenvalue problem for a singularly perturbed Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Then assuming that the Aubry set of the Hamiltonian consists of a finite number of points or limit cycles situated in the domain or on its boundary, we find the limit of the eigenvalue and …
The aim of this paper is to provide uniform estimates for the eigenvalue spacings of one-dimensional semiclassical Schrödinger operators with singular potentials on the half-line. We introduce a new development of semiclassical measures related to families of Schrödinger operators that provides a means of establishing uniform non-concentration estimates within that class of operators. This dramatically simplifies analysis that would typically require detailed WKB expansions near the turning point, near the singular point and several gluing type results to connect various regions in the domain.
In this note, we present some interesting observations on the Schiffer's conjecture, interior transmission eigenvalue problem and their connections to singular and nonsingular invisibility cloaking problems of acoustic waves.
In this paper we prove existence of (viscosity) solutions of Dirichlet problems concerning fully nonlinear elliptic operator, which are either degenerate or singular when the gradient of the solution is zero. For this class of operators it is possible to extend the concept of eigenvalue, this paper concerns the cases when the inf of the principal eigenvalues is positive i.e. when both the maximum and the minimum principle holds.
We consider a class of nonlinear integro-differential operators and prove existence of two principal (half) eigenvalues in bounded smooth domains with exterior Dirichlet condition. We then establish simplicity of the principal eigenfunctions in viscosity sense, maximum principles, continuity property of the principal eigenvalues with respect to domains etc. We also prove an anti-maximum principle and study existence result for some nonlinear problem via Rabinowitz bifurcation-type results.
We study eigenvalue spacings and local eigenvalue statistics for 1D lattice Schrodinger operators with Holder regular potential, obtaining a version of Minami's inequality and Poisson statistics for the local eigenvalue spacings. The main additional new input are regular properties of the Furstenberg measures and the density of states obtained in some of the author's earlier work.
In a domain $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^\mathbf{N}$ we consider compact, Birman-Schwinger type, operators of the form $\mathbf{T}_{P,\mathfrak{A}}=\mathfrak{A}^*P\mathfrak{A}$; here $P$ is a singular Borel measure in $Ω$ and $\mathfrak{A}$ is a noncritical order $-l\ne -\mathbf{N}/2$ pseudodifferential operator. For a class of such operators, we obtain estimates and a proper version of H.Weyl's asymptotic law for eigenvalues, with order depending on dimensional characteristics of the measure. A version of the CLR estimate for singular measures is proved. For non-selfadjoint operators of the form $P…
For fully nonlinear $k$-Hessian operators on bounded strictly $(k-1)$-convex domains $Ω$ in ${\mathbb R}^N$, a characterization of the principal eigenvalue associated to a $k$-convex and negative principal eigenfunction will be given as the supremum over values of a spectral parameter for which admissible viscosity supersolutions obey a minimum principle. The admissibility condition is phrased in terms of the natural closed convex cone $Σ_k$ in the space of symmetric N by N matrices, which is an elliptic set in the sense of Krylov [Trans. AMS, 1995] and which corresponds to using $k$-convex fu…
In this paper we prove the existence of a maximum for the first Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue in the class of convex sets with a fixed spherical hole under volume constraint. More precisely, if $Ω=Ω_0 \setminus \bar{B}_{R_1}$, where $B_{R_1}$ is the ball centered at the origin with radius $R_1>0$ and $Ω_0\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$, is an open bounded and convex set such that $B_{R_1}\Subset Ω_0$, then the first Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue $σ_1(Ω)$ has a maximum when $R_1$ and the measure of $Ω$ are fixed. Moreover, if $Ω_0$ is contained in a suitable ball, we prove that the spherical shel…
In this paper the discrete eigenvalues of elliptic second order differential operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $n \in \mathbb{N}$, with singular $δ$- and $δ'$-interactions are studied. We show the self-adjointness of these operators and derive equivalent formulations for the eigenvalue problems involving boundary integral operators. These formulations are suitable for the numerical computations of the discrete eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions by boundary element methods. We provide convergence results and show numerical examples.
We study the minimization of the positive principal eigenvalue associated to a weighted Neumann problem settled in a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{N}$, within a suitable class of sign-changing weights. Denoting with $u$ the optimal eigenfunction and with $D$ its super-level set associated to the optimal weight, we perform the analysis of the singular limit of the optimal eigenvalue as the measure of $D $ tends to zero. We show that, when the measure of $D$ is sufficiently small, $u $ has a unique local maximum point lying on the boundary of $Ω$ and $D$ is connected. Furthermore, …
In a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{\mathbf{N}}$ we consider a selfadjoint operator $\mathbf{T}=\mathfrak{A}^*P\mathfrak{A} ,$ where $\mathfrak{A}$ is a pseudodifferential operator of order $-l=-\mathbf{N}/2$ and $P=Vμ_Σ$ is a singular signed measure in $Ω$ concentrated on a Lipschitz surface $Σ$ of dimension $d<\mathbf{N}$, absolutely continuous with respect to the surface measure $μ_Σ$ on $Σ$. We establish eigenvalue estimates and asymptotics for this operator. It turns out that the order of these estimates and asymptotics is independent of the dimension $d$ of the surface. If there are severa…
Consider the eigenvalue problem generated by a fixed differential operator with a sign-changing weight on the eigenvalue term. We prove that as the negative part of the weight is rescaled towards negative infinity on some subregion, the spectrum converges to that of the original problem restricted to the complementary region. On the interface between the regions the limiting problem acquires Dirichlet-type boundary conditions. Our main theorem concerns eigenvalue problems for sign-changing bilinear forms on Hilbert spaces. We apply our results to a wide range of PDEs: second and fourth order e…
