We define and study sl\_2-categorifications on abelian categories. We show in particular that there is a self-derived (even homotopy) equivalence categorifying the adjoint action of the simple reflection. We construct categorifications for blocks of symmetric groups and deduce that two blocks are splendidly Rickard equivalent whenever they have isomorphic defect groups and we show that this implies Broué's abelian defect group conjecture for symmetric groups. We give similar results for general linear groups over finite fields. The constructions extend to cyclotomic Hecke algebras. We also construct categorifications for category O of gl\_n(C) and for rational representations of general linear groups over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p, where we deduce that two blocks corresponding to weights with the same stabilizer under the dot action of the affine Weyl group have equivalent derived (and homotopy) categories, as conjectured by Rickard.
We give a construction of sl_2-categorifications (in the sense of Chuang-Rouquier) for representations of U_q(gl_n), for generic q and for q a root of unity.
We construct an equivalence of graded Abelian categories from a category of representations of the quiver-Hecke algebra of type $A_1^{(1)}$ to the category of equivariant perverse coherent sheaves on the nilpotent cone of type $A$. We prove that this equivalence is weakly monoidal. This gives a representation-theoretic categorification of the preprojective K-theoretic Hall algebra considered by Schiffmann-Vasserot. Using this categorification, we compare the monoidal categorification of the quantum open unipotent cells of type $A_1^{(1)}$ given by Kang-Kashiwara-Kim-Oh-Park in terms of quiver-…
We construct a categorification of the braid groups associated with Coxeter groups inside the homotopy category of Soergel's bimodules. Classical actions of braid groups on triangulated categories should come from an action of this monoidal category. We construct representations of this monoidal category on category O of a complex semi-simple Lie algebra and on constructible sheaves over flag varieties. We also consider general constructions of self-equivalences as reflections around another category.
Varagnolo and Vasserot conjectured an equivalence between the category O for CRDAHA's and a subcategory of an affine parabolic category O of type A. We prove this conjecture. As applications, we prove a conjecture of Rouquier on the dimension of simple modules of CRDAHA's and a conjecture of Chuang-Miyachi on the Koszul duality for the category O of CRDAHA's.
We explore the connection between the notion of Hopf category and the categorification of the infinite dimensional Heisenberg algebra via graphical calculus proposed by M.Khovanov. We show that the existence of a Hopf structure on a semisimple symmetric monoidal abelian category implies existence of a categorical action in the sense of Khovanov and thus leads to a strong categorification of this algebra.
We discuss the homological algebra of representation theory of finite dimensional algebras and finite groups. We present various methods for the construction and the study of equivalences of derived categories: local group theory, geometry and categorifications.
We prove that the quantum cluster algebra structure of a unipotent quantum coordinate ring $A_q(\mathfrak{n}(w))$, associated with a symmetric Kac-Moody algebra and its Weyl group element $w$, admits a monoidal categorification via the representations of symmetric Khovanov-Lauda- Rouquier algebras. In order to achieve this goal, we give a formulation of monoidal categorifications of quantum cluster algebras and provide a criterion for a monoidal category of finite-dimensional graded $R$-modules to become a monoidal categorification, where $R$ is a symmetric Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebra. Rou…
Starting from the symmetric group $S_n$, we construct two fiat $2$-categories. One of them can be viewed as the fiat "extension" of the natural $2$-category associated with the symmetric inverse semigroup (considered as an ordered semigroup with respect to the natural order). This $2$-category provides a fiat categorification for the integral semigroup algebra of the symmetric inverse semigroup. The other $2$-category can be viewed as the fiat "extension" of the $2$-category associated with the maximal factorizable subsemigroup of the dual symmetric inverse semigroup (again, considered as an o…
Using the unfolding method given in \cite{HL}, we prove the conjectures on sign-coherence and a recurrence formula respectively of ${\bf g}$-vectors for acyclic sign-skew-symmetric cluster algebras. As a following consequence, the conjecture is affirmed in the same case which states that the ${\bf g}$-vectors of any cluster form a basis of $\mathbb Z^n$. Also, the additive categorification of an acyclic sign-skew-symmetric cluster algebra $\mathcal A(Σ)$ is given, which is realized as $(\mathcal C^{\widetilde Q},Γ)$ for a Frobenius $2$-Calabi-Yau category $\mathcal C^{\widetilde Q}$ constructe…

The rings of symmetric polynomials form an inverse system whose limit, the ring of symmetric functions, is the model for the bosonic Fock space representation of the affine Lie algebra. We categorify this construction by considering an inverse limit of categories of polynomial representation of general linear groups. We show that this limit naturally carries an action of the affine Lie algebra (in the sense of Rouquier), thereby obtaining a famiy of categorifications of the bosonic Fock space representation.
We categorify a coideal subalgebra of the quantum group of $\mathfrak{sl}_{2r+1}$ by introducing a $2$-category à la Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier, and show that self-dual indecomposable $1$-morphisms categorify the canonical basis of this algebra. This allows us to define a categorical action of this coideal algebra on the categories of modules over cohomology rings of partial flag varieties and on the BGG category $\mathcal{O}$ of type B/C.
We construct categorifications of tensor products of arbitrary finite-dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_k$ with subquotient categories of the BGG category $\mathcal{O}$, generalizing previous work of Sussan and Mazorchuk-Stroppel. Using Lie theoretical methods, we prove in detail that they are tensor product categorifications according to the recent definition of Losev and Webster. As an application we deduce an equivalence of categories between certain versions of category $\mathcal{O}$ and Webster's tensor product categories. Finally we indicate how the categorificati…
The monoidal category of Soergel bimodules categorifies the Hecke algebra of a finite Weyl group. In the case of the symmetric group, morphisms in this category can be drawn as graphs in the plane. We define a quotient category, also given in terms of planar graphs, which categorifies the Temperley-Lieb algebra. Certain ideals appearing in this quotient are related both to the 1-skeleton of the Coxeter complex and to the topology of 2D cobordisms. We demonstrate how further subquotients of this category will categorify the cell modules of the Temperley-Lieb algebra.
Bernstein, Frenkel and Khovanov have constructed a categorification of tensor products of the standard representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ using singular blocks of category $\mathcal{O}$ for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. In earlier work, we construct a positive characteristic analogue using blocks of representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ over a field $\textbf{k}$ of characteristic $p > n$, with zero Frobenius character, and singular Harish-Chandra character. In the present paper, we extend these results and construct a categorical $\mathfrak{sl}_k$-action, following Sussan's approach, by considering more …
This article contains a review of categorifications of semisimple representations of various rings via abelian categories and exact endofunctors on them. A simple definition of an abelian categorification is presented and illustrated with several examples, including categorifications of various representations of the symmetric group and its Hecke algebra via highest weight categories of modules over the Lie algebra sl(n). The review is intended to give non-experts in representation theory who are familiar with the topological aspects of categorification (lifting quantum link invariants to homo…
Bernstein, Frenkel, and Khovanov have constructed a categorification of tensor products of the standard representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$, where they use singular blocks of category $\mathcal{O}$ for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and translation functors. Here we construct a positive characteristic analogue using blocks of representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ over a field $\textbf{k}$ of characteristic $p$ with zero Frobenius character, and singular Harish-Chandra character. We show that the aforementioned categorification admits a Koszul graded lift, which is equivalent to a geometric categorification …
This article investigates duals for bimodule categories over finite tensor categories. We show that finite bimodule categories form a tricategory and discuss the dualities in this tricategory using inner homs. We consider inner-product bimodule categories over pivotal tensor categories with additional structure on the inner homs. Inner-product module categories are related to Frobenius algebras and lead to the notion of $*$-Morita equivalence for pivotal tensor categories. We show that inner-product bimodule categories form a tricategory with two duality operations and an additional pivotal st…
This is an expository article. We survey some fundamental trends in representation theory of symmetric groups and related objects which became apparent in the last fifteen years. The emphasis is on connections with Lie theory via categorification. We present results on branching rules and crystal graphs, decomposition numbers and canonical bases, graded representation theory, connections with cyclotomic and affine Hecke algebras, Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras, category ${\mathcal O}$, $W$-algebras, ...
For every smooth projective variety, we construct an action of the Heisenberg algebra on the direct sum of the Grothendieck groups of all the symmetric quotient stacks which contains the Fock space as a subrepresentation. The action is induced by functors on the level of the derived categories which form a weak categorification of the action.
We complete the derived equivalence classification of all symmetric algebras of polynomial growth, by solving the subtle problem of distinguishing the standard and nonstandard nondomestic symmetric algebras of polynomial growth up to derived equivalence.
Let S be the direct sum of algebra of symmetric groups C S_n for a non-negative integer n. We show that the Grothendieck group K_0(S) of the category of finite dimensional modules of S is isomorphic to the differential algebra of polynomials Z[D^n x]. Moreover, for a non-negative integer m, we define m-th products on K_0(S) which make the algebra K_0(S) isomorphic to an integral form of the Virasoro-Magri Poisson vertex algebra. Also, we investigate relations between K_0(S) and K_0(N) where K_0(N) is the direct sum of Grothendieck groups K_0(N_n) of finitely generated projective N_n-modules. H…
We provide a new proof of the super duality equivalence between infinite-rank parabolic BGG categories of general linear Lie (super) algebras conjectured by Cheng and Wang and first proved by Cheng and Lam. We do this by establishing a new uniqueness theorem for tensor product categorifications motivated by work of Brundan, Losev, and Webster. Moreover we show that these BGG categories have Koszul graded lifts and super duality can be lifted to a graded equivalence.
We construct an explicit isomorphism between blocks of cyclotomic Hecke algebras and (sign-modified) Khovanov-Lauda algebras in type A. These isomorphisms connect the categorification conjecture of Khovanov and Lauda to Ariki's categorification theorem. The Khovanov-Lauda algebras are naturally graded, which allows us to exhibit a non-trivial Z-grading on blocks of cyclotomic Hecke algebras, including symmetric groups in positive characteristic.
In this paper, we announce results from our thesis, which studies for the first time the categorification of the theory of generalized permutohedra. The vector spaces in the categorification are tightly constrained by certain continuity relations which appeared in physics in the mid 20th century. We describe here the action of the symmetric group on the vector spaces in this categorification. Generalized permutohedra are replaced by vector spaces of characteristic functions of polyhedral cones about faces of permutohedra, called plates, due to A. Ocneanu. The symmetric group acts on plates by …
Using quantum skew-Howe duality, we study the category $\operatorname{Rep}(\mathfrak{gl}(m|n))$ of tensor products of exterior powers of the standard representation of $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(m|n))$, and prove that it is equivalent to a category of ladder diagrams modulo one extra family of relations. We then construct a categorification of $\operatorname{Rep}(\mathfrak{gl}(m|n))$ using the theory of foams. In the case of $n=0$, we show that we can recover $\mathfrak{sl}(m)$ foams introduced by Queffelec and Rose to define Khovanov-Rozansky $\mathfrak{sl}(m)$ link homology. We also define a categor…
We describe a general framework for prime, completely prime, semiprime, and primitive ideals of an abelian 2-category. This provides a noncommutative version of Balmer's prime spectrum of a tensor triangulated category. These notions are based on containment conditions in terms of thick subcategories of an abelian category and thick ideals of an abelian 2-category. We prove categorical analogs of the main properties of noncommutative prime spectra. Similar notions, starting with Serre subcategories of an abelian category and Serre ideals of an abelian 2-category, are developed. They are linked…
We give a complete derived equivalence classification of all symmetric algebras of domestic representation type over an algebraically closed field. This completes previous work by R. Bocian and the authors, where in this paper we solve the crucial problem of distinguishing standard and nonstandard algebras up to derived equivalence. Our main tool are generalized Reynolds ideals, introduced by B. K"ulshammer for symmetric algebras in positive characteristic, and recently shown by A. Zimmermann (math.RA/0509580) to be invariants under derived equivalences.
We give a characterization of the sets of objects of the derived category of a block of a finite group algebra (or other symmetric algebra) that occur as the set of images of simple modules under an equivalence of derived categories. We give some applications to proving that certain blocks have equivalent derived categories.
We construct nontrivial auto-equivalences of stable module categories for elementary, local symmetric algebras over a field k. These auto-equivalences are modeled after the spherical twists of Seidel and Thomas and the $\mathbb{P}^n$-twists of Huybrechts and Thomas, which yield auto-equivalences of the derived category of coherent sheaves on a variety. For group algebras of p-groups in characteristic p we recover many of the auto-equivalences corresponding to endo-trivial modules. We also obtain analogous auto-equivalences for local algebras of dihedral and semi-dihedral type, which are not gr…
We construct an infinite tower of irreducible calibrated representations of periplectic Brauer algebras on which the cup-cap generators act by nonzero matrices. As representations of the symmetric group, these are exterior powers of the standard representation (i.e. hook representations). Our approach uses the recently-defined degenerate affine periplectic Brauer algebra, which plays a role similar to that of the degenerate affine Hecke algebra in representation theory of the symmetric group. We write formulas for the representing matrices in the basis of Jucys--Murphy eigenvectors and we comp…
We define and study RoCK blocks for double covers of symmetric groups. We prove that RoCK blocks of double covers are Morita equivalent to standard `local' blocks. The analogous result for blocks of symmetric groups, a theorem of Chuang and Kessar, was an important step in Chuang and Rouquier ultimately proving Broué's abelian defect group conjecture for symmetric groups. Indeed we prove Broué's conjecture for the RoCK blocks defined in this article. Our methods involve translation into the quiver Hecke superalgebras setting using the Kang-Kashiwara-Tsuchioka isomorphism and categorification m…
We use the dimension and the Lie algebra structure of the first Hochschild cohomology group to distinguish some algebras of dihedral, semi-dihedral and quaternion type up to stable equivalence of Morita type. In particular, we complete the classification of algebras of dihedral type that was mostly determined by Zhou and Zimmermann.
In this paper, we study 2-representations of 2-quantum groups (in the sense of Rouquier and Khovanov-Lauda) categorifying tensor products of irreducible representations. Our aim is to construct knot homologies categorifying Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of knots for arbitrary representations, which will be done in a follow-up paper. We consider an algebraic construction of these categories, via an explicit diagrammatic presentation, generalizing the cyclotomic quotient of the quiver Hecke algebra. One of our primary results is that these categories coincide when both are defined. We also inves…
We review some recent advances in modular representation theory of symmetric groups and related Hecke algebras. We discuss connections with Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras and gradings on the blocks of the group algebras $FΣ_n$, which these connections reveal; graded categorification and connections with quantum groups and crystal bases; modular branching rules and the Mullineaux map; graded cellular structure and graded Specht modules; cuspidal systems for affine KLR algebras and imaginary Schur-Weyl duality, which connects representation theory of these algebras to the usual Schur algebras …
We introduce Brauer complex of symmetric SB-algebra, and reformulate in terms of Brauer complex the so far known invariants of stable and derived equivalence of symmetric SB-algebras. In particular, the genus of Brauer complex turns out to be invariant under derived equivalence. We study transformations of Brauer complexes which preserve class of derived equivalence. Additionally, we establish a new invariant of derived equivalence of symmetric SB-algebras. As a consequence, symmetric SB-algebras with Brauer complex of genus 0 are classified. Keywords: Brauer tree algebras, special biserial al…
We introduce a simple diagrammatic 2-category $\mathscr{A}$ that categorifies the image of the Fock space representation of the Heisenberg algebra and the basic representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_\infty$. We show that $\mathscr{A}$ is equivalent to a truncation of the Khovanov--Lauda categorified quantum group $\mathscr{U}$ of type $A_\infty$, and also to a truncation of Khovanov's Heisenberg 2-category $\mathscr{H}$. This equivalence is a categorification of the principal realization of the basic representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_\infty$. As a result of the categorical equivalences described abo…
The monoidal category of Soergel bimodules can be thought of as a categorification of the Hecke algebra of a finite Weyl group. We present this category, when the Weyl group is the symmetric group, in the language of planar diagrams with local generators and local defining relations.
A new homological symmetry condition is exhibited that extends and unifies several recently defined and widely used concepts. Applications include general constructions of tilting modules and derived equivalences, and characterisations of Gorenstein properties of endomorphism rings.
Motivated by the work of of A. Zelevinsky on positive self-adjoint Hopf algebras, we define what we call a symmetric self-adjoint Hopf structure for a certain kind of semisimple abelian categories. It is known that every positive self-adjoint Hopf algebra admits a natural action of the associated Heisenberg double. We construct canonical morphisms lifting the relations that define this action on the algebra level and define an object that we call a categorical Heisenberg double that is a natural setting for considering these morphisms. As examples, we exhibit the symmetric self-adjoint Hopf st…
This paper studies self-injective algebras of polynomial growth. We prove that the derived equivalence classification of weakly symmetric algebras of domestic type coincides with the classification up to stable equivalences (of Morita type). As for weakly symmetric non-domestic algebras of polynomial growth, up to some scalar problems, the derived equivalence classification coincides with the classification up to stable equivalences of Morita type. As a consequence, we get the validity of the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for stable equivalences of Morita type between weakly symmetric algebras o…
