We generalize the usual relationship between irreducible Zariski closed subsets of the affine space, their defining ideals, coordinate rings, and function fields, to a non-commutative setting, where "varieties" carry a PGL_n-action, regular and rational "functions" on them are matrix-valued, "coordinate rings" are prime polynomial identity algebras, and "function fields" are central simple algebras of degree n. In particular, a prime polynomial identity algebra of degree n is finitely generated if and only if it arises as the "coordinate ring" of a "variety" in this setting. For n = 1 our definitions and results reduce to those of classical affine algebraic geometry.
Let $R$ be a ring satisfying a polynomial identity and let $δ$ be a derivation of $R$. We show that if $N$ is the nil radical of $R$ then $δ(N)\subseteq N$ and the Jacobson radical of $R[x;δ]$ is equal to $N[x;δ]$. As a consequence, we have that if $R$ is locally nilpotent then $R[x;δ]$ is locally nilpotent. This affirmatively answers a question of Smoktunowicz and Ziembowski.
It is proved that for any prime integer $p$ and each field $F$ of characteristic $p$, there exists a centrally essential $F$-algebra which is not a PI-ring and is not algebraic over its center. Let $R$ be a ring satisfying a polynomial identity and let $D$ be a derivation of $R$. We consider the Jacobson radical of the skew polynomial ring $R[x;D]$ with coefficients in $R$ and with respect to $D$, and show that $J(R[x;D])\cap R$ is a nil $D$-ideal. This extends a result of Ferrero, Kishimoto, and Motose, who proved this in the case when $R$ is commutative.
For an nxn matrix A over a Lie nilpotent ring R of index k, we prove that an invariant "power" Cayley-Hamilton identity of degree (n^2)2^{k-2} holds. The right coefficients are not uniquely determined by A, and the cosets lambda_i+D, with D the double commutator ideal R[[R,R],R]R of R, appear in the so-called second right characteristic polynomial of the natural image of A in the nxn matrix ring M_{n}(R/D) over the factor ring R/D.
In characteristic zero, Zinovy Reichstein and the author generalized the usual relationship between irreducible Zariski closed subsets of the affine space, their defining ideals, coordinate rings, and function fields, to a non-commutative setting, where "varieties" carry a PGL_n-action, regular and rational "functions" on them are matrix-valued, "coordinate rings" are prime polynomial identity algebras, and "function fields" are central simple algebras of degree n. In the present paper, much of this is extended to prime characteristic. In addition, a mistake in the earlier paper is corrected. …
Let $KG$ be the group algebra of a torsion group $G$ over a field $K$. We show that if the units of $KG$ satisfy a Laurent polynomial identity which is not satisfied by the units of the relative free algebra $K[α,β: α^2=β^2=0]$ then $KG$ satisfies a polynomial identity. This extends Hartley Conjecture which states that if the units of $KG$ satisfies a group identity then $KG$ satisfies a polynomial identity. As an application of our results we prove that if the units of $KG$ satisfies a Laurent polynomial identity with a support of cardinality at most 3 then $KG$ satisfies a polynomial identit…
In this article, we extend some results about algebra $A$ with the group of units $U(A)$ having a special polynomial identity, Laurent polynomial. And we present a new version of B. Hartley Conjecture with these identities.
Let L be a restricted Lie superalgebra with its restricted enveloping algebra u(L) over a field F of characteristic p>2. A polynomial identity is called non-matrix if it is not satisfied by the algebra of 2\times 2 matrices over F. We characterize L when u(L) satisfies a non-matrix polynomial identity.
In this paper we study the structure of a class of algebras satisfying a polynomial identity of degree 6. We show, assuming the existence of a non-zero idempotent, that if an algebra satisfies such an identity, it admits a Peirce decomposition related to this idempotent. We studied the algebraic structure and highlighted the connections of the algebras of this class with Bernstein algebras, train algebras, Jordan algebras and power associative algebras. Keywords: Peirce decomposition, Bernstein algebra, Jordan algebra, Power associative algebra, train algebra, polynomial identity, idempotent.
Let A be an algebra whose group of units U(A) satisfies a Laurent polynomial identity (LPI). We establish conditions on these polynomials in such a way that nil-generated algebras and group algebras with torsion groups over infinite fields in characteristic p > 0 have nonmatrix identities. We also determine, in the determine in the context of group algebras with arbitrary LPI for the group of units, the existence of polynomial identities.
The Jacobi identity is one of the properties that are used to define the concept of Lie algebra and in this context is closely related to associativity. In this paper we provide a complete description of all bivariate polynomials that satisfy the Jacobi identity over infinite integral domains. Although this description depends on the characteristic of the domain, it turns out that all these polynomials are of degree at most one in each indeterminate.
We use computer algebra to demonstrate the existence of a multilinear polynomial identity of degree 8 satisfied by the bilinear operation in every Lie-Yamaguti algebra. This identity is a consequence of the defining identities for Lie-Yamaguti algebras, but is not a consequence of anticommutativity. We give an explicit form of this identity as an alternating sum over all permutations of the variables in a polynomial with 8 terms. Our computations also show that such identities do not exist in degrees less than 8.
If A is an n \times n matrix over a ring R satisfying the polynomial identity [x,y][u,v]=0, then an invariant Cayley-Hamilton identity of the form ΣA^{i}c_{i,j}A^{j}=0 with c_{i,j}\in R and c_{n,n}=(n!)^2 holds for A.
Leavitt path algebras L of an arbitrary graph E over a field K satisfying a polynomial identity are completely characterized both in graph-theoretic and algebraic terms. When E is a finite graph, L satisfying a polynomial identity is shown to be equivalent to the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of L being at most one, though this is no longer true for infinite graphs. It is shown that, for an arbitrary graph E, the Leavitt path algebra L has Gelfand-Kirillov dimension zero if and only if E has no cycles. Likewise, L has Gelfand-Kirillov dimension one if and only if E contains at least one cycle, bu…
For iterated Ore extensions satisfying a polynomial identity we present an elementary way of erasing derivations. As a consequence we recover some results obtained by Haynal in "PI degree parity in q-skew polynomial rings" (J. Algebra 319, 2008, 4199-4221). We also prove, under mild assumptions on $R_n=R[x_1;\si_1,\de_1]...[x_n;\si_n;\de_n]$ that the Ore extension $R[x_1;\si_1]...[x_n;\si_n]$ exists and is PI if $R_n$ is PI.
Let $K$ be a field, let $σ$ be an automorphism of $K$, and let $δ$ be a derivation of $K$. We show that if $D$ is one of $K(x;σ)$ or $K(x;δ)$, then $D$ either contains a free algebra over its center on two generators, or every finitely generated subalgebra of $D$ satisfies a polynomial identity. As a corollary, we are able to show that the quotient division ring of any iterated Ore extension of an affine domain satisfying a polynomial identity either again satisfies a polynomial identity or it contains a free algebra over its center on two variables.
In this note, we introduce a new concept of a {\it generalized algebraic rational identity} to investigate the structure of division rings. The main theorem asserts that if a non-central subnormal subgroup $N$ of the multiplicative group $D^*$ of a division ring $D$ with center $F$ satisfies a non-trivial generalized algebraic rational identity of bounded degree, then $D$ is a finite dimensional vector space over $F$. This generalizes some previous results.
Let $δ$ be a derivation of a locally nilpotent ring $R$. Then the differential polynomial ring $R[X; δ]$ cannot be mapped onto a ring with a non-zero idempotent. This answers a recent question by Greenfeld, Smoktunowicz and Ziembowski.
We prove nilpotency results for Lie algebras over an arbitrary field admitting a derivation, which satisfies a given polynomial identity $r(t)=0$. For the polynomial $r=t^n-1$ we obtain results on the nilpotency of Lie algebras admitting a periodic derivation of order $n$. We find an optimal bound on the nilpotency class in characteristic $p$ if $p$ does not divide a certain invariant $ρ_n$. We give a new description of the set $\mathcal{N}_p$ of positive integers $n$, introduced by Shalev, which arise as the order of a periodic derivation of a finite-dimensional non-nilpotent Lie algebra in c…
We study iterated differential polynomial rings over a locally nilpotent ring and show that a large class of such rings are Behrens radical. This extends results of Chebotar and Chen et al.
We construct a Koszul complex in the category of left skew polynomial rings associated to a flat endomorphism that provides a finite free resolution of an ideal generated by a Koszul regular sequence.
Let $R$ be a ring and $σ$ an endomorphism of $R$. In this note, we study skew polynomial rings and skew power series rings over idempotent reflexive rings and abelian rings. Also, we introduce the concept of right (resp., left) $σ$-idempotent reflexive rings which generalizes right (resp., left) idempotent reflexive rings and $σ$-abelian rings. Certain results are obtained as corollaries from our results.
The aim of the paper is to extend the class of generalized Weyl algebras to a larger class of rings (they are also called {\em generalized Weyl algebras}) that are determined by two ring endomorphisms rather than one as in the case of `old' GWAs. A new class of rings, the {\em diskew polynomial rings}, is introduced that is closely related to GWAs (they are GWAs under a mild condition). The, so-called, ambiskew polynomial rings are a small subclass of the class of diskew polynomial rings. Semisimplicity criteria are given for generalized Weyl algebras and diskew polynomial rings.
For an endomorphism s of R with s^{t}=1 we prove that the truncated polynomial ring (algebra) R[w,s]/(w^{t}) embeds into M_{t}(R[z]/(z^{t})). For an involution we exhibit an embedding of R into M_{2,1}^{s}(R), where M_{2,1}^{s}(R) is the algebra of the so called (s,2,1) supermatrices.
Regarding polynomial functions on a subset $S$ of a non-commutative ring $R$, that is, functions induced by polynomials in $R[x]$ (whose variable commutes with the coefficients), we show connections between, on one hand, sets $S$ such that the integer-valued polynomials on $S$ form a ring, and, on the other hand, sets $S$ such that the set of polynomials in $R[x]$ that are zero on $S$ is an ideal of $R[x]$.
A characterization of right (left) quasi-duo skew polynomial rings of endomorphism type and skew Laurent polynomial rings are given. In particular, it is shown that (1) the polynomial ring R[x] is right quasi-duo iff R[x] is commutative modulo its Jacobson radical iff R[x] is left quasi-duo, (2) the skew Laurent polynomial ring is right quasi-duo iff it is left quasi-duo. These extend some known results concerning a description of quasi-duo polynomial rings and give a partial answer to the question posed by Lam and Dugas whether right quasi-duo rings are left quasi-duo.
In this article we give a characterization of left (right) quasi-duo differential polynomial rings. In particular, we show that a differential polynomial ring is left quasi-duo if and only if it is right quasi-duo. This yields a partial answer to a question posed by Lam and Dugas in 2005. We provide non-trivial examples of such rings and give a complete description of the maximal ideals of an arbitrary quasi-duo differential polynomial ring. Moreover, we show that there is no left (right) quasi-duo differential polynomial ring in several indeterminates.
In this work, free multivariate skew polynomial rings are considered, together with their quotients over ideals of skew polynomials that vanish at every point (which includes minimal multivariate skew polynomial rings). We provide a full classification of such multivariate skew polynomial rings (free or not) over finite fields. To that end, we first show that all ring morphisms from the field to the ring of square matrices are diagonalizable, and that the corresponding derivations are all inner derivations. Secondly, we show that all such multivariate skew polynomial rings over finite fields a…
We introduce the notion of Fibonacci and Lucas derivations of the polynomial algebras and prove that any element of kernel of the derivations defines a polynomial identity for the Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials. Also, we prove that any polynomial identity for Appel polynomial yields a polynomial identity for the Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials and describe the corresponding intertwining maps.
Let $A$ be a ring with identity, $σ$ a ring endomorphism of $A$ that maps the identity to itself, $δ$ a $σ$-derivation of $A$, and consider the skew-polynomial ring $A[X;σ,δ]$. When $A$ is a finite field, a Galois ring, or a general ring, some fairly recent literature used $A[X;σ,δ]$ to construct new interesting codes (e.g. skew-cyclic and skew-constacyclic codes) that generalize their classical counterparts over finite fields (e.g. cyclic and constacyclic linear codes). This paper presents results concerning {\it principal} $(f, σ, δ)$-codes over a ring $A$, where $f\in A[X;σ,δ]$ is monic. We…
In this paper, we study the non trivial idempotents of the $2 \times 2$ matrix ring over the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}_{pqr}[x]$ for distinct primes $p, q $ and $r$ greater than $3$. We have classified all the idempotents of this matrix ring into several classes such that any idempotent must belong to one of these classes. This work is extension of the work done in $[1]$.
We give an improved polynomial bound on the complexity of the equation solvability problem, or more generally, of finding the value sets of polynomials over finite nilpotent rings. Our proof depends on a result in additive combinatorics, which may be of independent interest.
The concepts of evaluation and interpolation are extended from univariate skew polynomials to multivariate skew polynomials, with coefficients over division rings. Iterated skew polynomial rings are in general not suitable for this purpose. Instead, multivariate skew polynomial rings are constructed in this work as follows: First, free multivariate skew polynomial rings are defined, where multiplication is additive on degrees and restricts to concatenation for monomials. This allows to define the evaluation of any skew polynomial at any point by unique remainder division. Multivariate skew pol…
We study important invariants and properties of the Veronese subalgebras of $q$-skew polynomial rings, including their discriminant, center and automorphism group, as well as cancellation property and the Tits alternative.
We find particular relations which we call "Bernoulli-type" in some noncommutative polynomial ring with a single nontrivial relation. More precisely, our ring is isomorphic to the universal enveloping algebra of a two-dimensional non-abelian Lie algebra. From these Bernoulli-type relations in our ring, we can obtain a representation on a certain left ideal with the Bernoulli numbers as structure constants.
We argue that the definition of ring should require the existence of a multiplicative identity 1 because this requirement is part of what associativity should be. We list counterarguments in order to rebut them.
The ring of dual numbers over a ring $R$ is $R[α] = R[x]/(x^2)$, where $α$ denotes $x+(x^2)$. For any finite commutative ring $R$, we characterize null polynomials and permutation polynomials on $R[α]$ in terms of the functions induced by their coordinate polynomials ($f_1,f_2\in R[x]$, where $f=f_1+αf_2$) and their formal derivatives on $R$. We derive explicit formulas for the number of polynomial functions and the number of polynomial permutations on $\mathbb{Z}_{p^n}[α]$ for $n\le p$ ($p$ prime).
It is shown that, under some natural assumptions, the tensor product of differentially smooth algebras and the skew-polynomial rings over differentially smooth algebras are differentially smooth.
