It is known that Bernoulli scheme of independent trials with two outcomes is connected with the binomial coefficients. The aim of this paper is to indicate stochastic processes which are connected with the $q$-polynomial coefficients (in particular, with the $q$-binomial coefficients, or the Gaussian polynomials), Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind, and Euler numbers in a natural way. A probabilistic approach allows us to give very simple proofs of some identities for these coefficients.
By considering Eulerian numbers and ordered Stirling numbers of the second and third kinds over a multiset, we generalize identities of Eulerian numbers and Stirling numbers of the second and third kinds and provide $q$-analogs of these generalizations. Using these generalizations, we also compute Eulerian numbers and ordered Stirling numbers of the second kind over a multiset.
In this paper, we establish a connection between the 1/k-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Savage and Viswanathan (Electron. J. Combin. 19(2012), P9) and k-Stirling permutations. We also introduce the dual set of Stirling permutations.
We derive two new identities involving the Bernoulli numbers, the Euler numbers, and the Stirling numbers of the first kind using analytic continuation of a well known identity for the Stirling numbers of the first kind.
In this paper, we first present combinatorial proofs of a kind of expansions of the Eulerian polynomials of types A and B, and then we introduce Stirling permutations of the second kind. In particular, we count Stirling permutations of the second kind by their cycle ascent plateaus, fixed points and cycles.
We present (bi-)symmetric generating functions for the joint distributions of Euler-Stirling statistics on permutations, including the number of descents ($\mathsf{des}$), inverse descents ($\mathsf{ides}$), the number of left-to-right maxima ($\mathsf{lmax}$), the number of right-to-left maxima ($\mathsf{rmax}$) and the number of left-to-right minima ($\mathsf{lmin}$). We also show how they recover the classical symmetric generating function of permutations due to Carlitz, Roselle and Scoville (1966). Our proofs exploit three different recursive constructions of inversion sequences, bijection…
We study two generalizations of the gamma-expansion of Eulerian polynomials from the viewpoint of the decompositions of statistics. We first present an expansion formula of the trivariate Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of descents, big ascents and successions of permutations. And then, inspired by the work of Chen and Fu on the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials, we show the e-positivity of the multivariate k-th order Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of ascents, descents and j-plateaux of k-Stirling…
We use some basic properties of binomial and Stirling numbers to prove that the Euler characteristic is, essentially, the unique numerical topological invariant for compact polyhedra which can be expressed as a linear combination of the numbers of faces of triangulations. We obtain this result converting it into an eigenvalue problem.
In the paper, the author elementarily unifies and generalizes eight identities involving the functions $\frac{\pm1}{e^{\pm t}-1}$ and their derivatives. By one of these identities, the author establishes two explicit formulae for computing Euler polynomials and two-parameter Euler polynomials, which are a newly introduced notion, in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind.
Pondering upon the grammatical labeling of 0-1-2 increasing plane trees, we come to the realization that the grammatical labels play a role as records of chopped off leaves of the original increasing binary trees. While such an understanding is purely psychological, it does give rise to an efficient apparatus to tackle the partial $γ$-positivity of the Eulearian polynomials on multiset Stirling permutations, as long as we bear in mind the combinatorial meanings of the labels $x$ and $y$ in the Gessel representation of a $k$-Stirling permutation by means of an increasing $(k+1)$-ary tree. The development of the theories of the second-order Eulerian polynomials began with the works of Buckholtz and Carlitz in their studies of an asymptotic expansion. Gessel-Stanley introduced Stirling permutations and presented combinatorial interpretations of the second-order Eulerian polynomials. Recently, there is a growing interest in the properties of Stirling permutations. The motivation of this paper is to develop a general method for finding equidistributed statistics on Stirling permutations. Firstly, we show that the up-down-pair statistic is equidistributed with ascent-plateau statist…
We define a new family of generalized Stirling permutations that can be interpreted in terms of ordered trees and forests. We prove that the number of generalized Stirling permutations with a fixed number of ascents is given by a natural three-parameter generalization of the well-known Eulerian numbers. We give the generating function for this new class of numbers and, in the simplest cases, we find closed formulas for them and the corresponding row polynomials. By using a non-trivial involution our generalized Eulerian numbers can be mapped onto a family of generalized Ward numbers, forming a…
We obtain formulas for the growth rate of the numbers of certain paths in infinite graphs built on the two-dimensional Eulerian graph. Corollaries are identities relating Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds.
We evaluate in closed form several series involving products of Cauchy numbers with other special numbers (harmonic, skew-harmonic, hyperharmonic, and central binomial). Similar results are obtained with series involving Stirling numbers of the first kind. We focus on several particular cases which give new closed forms for Euler sums of hyperharmonic numbers and products of hyperharmonic and harmonic numbers.
Recently, Haglund and Visontai established the stability of the multivariate Eulerian polynomials as the generating polynomials of the Stirling permutations, which serves as a unification of some results of Bóna, Brenti, Janson, Kuba, and Panholzer concerning Stirling permutations. Let $B_n(x)$ be the generating polynomials of the descent statistic over Legendre-Stirling permutations, and let $T_n(x)=2^nC_n(x/2)$, where $C_n(x)$ are the second-order Eulerian polynomials. Haglund and Visontai proposed the problems of finding multivariate stable refinements of the polynomials $B_n(x)$ and $T_n(x…
For the Chebyshev-Stirling numbers, a special case of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers, asymptotic formulae are derived in terms of a local central limit theorem. The underlying probabilistic approach also applies to the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind. Thereby a supplement of the asymptotic analysis for these numbers is established.
The powers of matrices with Stirling number-coefficients are investigated. It is revealed that the elements of these matrices have a number of properties of the ordinary Stirling numbers. Moreover, "higher order" Bell, Fubini and Eulerian numbers can be defined. Hence we give a new interpretation for E. T. Bell's iterated exponential integers. In addition, it is worth to note that these numbers appear in combinatorial physics, in the problem of the normal ordering of quantum field theoretical operators.
As shown by Bousquet-Mélou--Claesson--Dukes--Kitaev (2010), ascent sequences can be used to encode $({\bf2+2})$-free posets. It is known that ascent sequences are enumerated by the Fishburn numbers, which appear as the coefficients of the formal power series $$\sum_{m=1}^{\infty}\prod_{i=1}^m (1-(1-t)^i).$$ In this paper, we present a novel way to recursively decompose ascent sequences, which leads to: (i) a calculation of the Euler--Stirling distribution on ascent sequences, including the numbers of ascents ($\asc$), repeated entries $(\rep)$, zeros ($\zero$) and maximal entries ($\max$). In …
Using Reiner's definition of Stirling numbers of the second kind in types $B$ and $D$, we generalize two well-known identities concerning the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind. The first identity relates them with Eulerian numbers and the second identity interprets them as entries in a transition matrix between the elements of two standard bases of the polynomial ring $R[x]$. Finally, we generalize these identities to the group of colored permutations $G_{m,n}$.

In this paper, we study gamma-positivity of descent-type polynomials by introducing the change of context-free grammars method. We first present grammatical proofs of the gamma-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials, type B Eulerian polynomials, derangement polynomials, Narayana polynomials and type B Narayana polynomials. We then provide partial gamma-positive expansions for several multivariate polynomials associated to Stirling permutations, Legendre-Stirling permutations, Jacobi-Stirling permutations and type B derangements, and the recurrences for the partial gamma-coefficients of these e…
A conjectured relation between Ramanujan's asymptotic approximations to the exponential function and the exponential integral is established. The proof involves Stirling numbers, second-order Eulerian numbers, modifications of both of these, and Stirling's approximation to the gamma function. Our work provides new information about the coefficients in Stirling's approximation and their connection to Ramanujan's approximation coefficients. A more analytic second proof of the main result is also included in an appendix.
Stirling permutations were introduced by Gessel and Stanley, who used their enumeration by the number of descents to give a combinatorial interpretation of certain polynomials related to Stirling numbers. Quasi-Stirling permutations, which can be viewed as labeled noncrossing matchings, were introduced by Archer et al. as a natural extension of Stirling permutations. Janson's correspondence between Stirling permutations and labeled increasing plane trees extends to a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the same set of trees without the increasing restriction. Archer et al. posed …
An extension of the theory of the Iterated Logarithmic Algebra gives the logarithmic analog of a Sheffer or Appell sequence of polynomials. This leads to several examples including Stirling's formula and a logarithmic version of the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula.
In a series of papers, P. Blasiak et al. developed a wide-ranging generalization of Bell numbers (and of Stirling numbers of the second kind) that appears to be relevant to the so-called Boson normal ordering problem. They provided a recurrence and, more recently, also offered a (fairly complex) combinatorial interpretation of these numbers. We show that by restricting the numbers somewhat (but still widely generalizing Bell and Stirling numbers), one can supply a much more natural combinatorial interpretation. In fact, we offer two different such interpretations, one in terms of graph colouri…
In this short note we provide some algebraic identity with a proof exploiting its probabilistic interpretation. We show several consequences of the identity, in particular we obtain a new representation of a Stirling number of second kind, $$ S(n,d)={1\over d!} \sum_{1\leq j_1<j_2<\ldots<j_{d-1}< n} 1\cdot2^{j_{d-1}-j_{d-2}}\cdots d^{j_1}$$ for integers $n\geq d$. Relating this to other known formula for $S(n,d)$ we also obtain $$ \sum_{1\leq j_1\leq j_2\leq \cdots\leq j_{n-d}\leq d} j_1j_2\ldots,j_{n-d} =d! \sum_{1\leq j_1<j_2<\ldots<j_{d-1}< n} 1\cdot2^{j_{d-1}-j_{d-2}}\cdots d^{j_1}.$$ As a…
Article presents a short investigation into some properties of the Moser polynomials which appear in various problems from algebraic combinatorics. For instance, these polynomials can be used to solve the Generalized Moser's Problem on multiset recovery: Can a collection (multiset) of $n$ numbers can be uniquely restored given the collection of its $s$-sums? We prove some explicit formulas showing relationships between Moser polynomials and such popular algebraic combinatorial sequences as Eulerian and Stirling numbers.
A permutation $π$ of a multiset is said to be a {\em quasi-Stirling} permutation if there does not exist four indices $i<j<k<\ell$ such that $π_i=π_k$ and $π_j=π_{\ell}$. For a multiset $\mathcal{M}$, denote by $\overline{\mathcal{Q}}_{\mathcal{M}}$ the set of quasi-Stirling permutations of $\mathcal{M}$. The {\em qusi-Stirling polynomial} on the multiset $\mathcal{M}$ is defined by $ \overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t)=\sum_{π\in \overline{\mathcal{Q}}_{\mathcal{M}}}t^{des(π)}$, where $des(π)$ denotes the number of descents of $π$. By employing generating function arguments, Elizalde derived an ele…
In this work, two new series expansions for generalized Euler's constants (Stieltjes constants) $γ_m$ are obtained. The first expansion involves Stirling numbers of the first kind, contains polynomials in $π^{-2}$ with rational coefficients and converges slightly better than Euler's series $\sum n^{-2}$. The second expansion is a semi-convergent series with rational coefficients only. This expansion is particularly simple and involves Bernoulli numbers with a non-linear combination of generalized harmonic numbers. It also permits to derive an interesting estimation for generalized Euler's cons…
We consider generalized Stirling numbers of the second kind $% S_{a,b,r}^{α_{s},β_{s},r_{s},p_{s}}\left( p,k\right) $, $% k=0,1,\ldots .rp+\sum_{s=2}^{L}r_{s}p_{s}$, where $a,b,α_{s},β_{s} $ are complex numbers, and $r,p,r_{s},p_{s}$ are non-negative integers given, $s=2,\ldots ,L$. (The case $a=1,b=0,r=1,r_{s}p_{s}=0$, corresponds to the standard Stirling numbers $S\left( p,k\right) $.) The numbers $% S_{a,b,r}^{α_{s},β_{s},r_{s},p_{s}}\left( p,k\right) $ are connected with a generalization of Eulerian numbers and polynomials we studied in previous works. This link allows us to propose (first…
The distribution of certain Mahonian statistic (called $\mathrm{BAST}$) introduced by Babson and Steingrímsson over the set of permutations that avoid vincular pattern $1\underline{32}$, is shown bijectively to match the distribution of major index over the same set. This new layer of equidistribution is then applied to give alternative interpretations of two related $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind, studied by Carlitz and Gould. Moreover, extensions to an Euler-Mahonian statistic over ordered set partitions, and to statistics over ordered multiset partitions present themselves naturall…
In this paper we obtain some explicit expressions for the Euler characteristic of a rank n coherent sheaf F on P^N and of its twists F(t) as polynomials in the Chern classes c_i(F), also giving algorithms for the computation. The employed methods use techniques of umbral calculus involving symmetric functions and Stirling numbers.
In this study we introduce a second type of higher order generalised geometric polynomials. This we achieve by examining the generalised stirling numbers $S(n; k;α;β;γ)$ [Hsu & Shiue,1998] for some negative arguments. We study their number theoretic properties, asymptotic properties, and study their combinatorial properties using the notion of barred preferential arrangements. We also proposed a generalisation of the classical Euler polynomials and show how these Euler polynomials are related to the second type of higher order generalised geometric polynomials.
We define a generalized class of modified zeta series transformations generating the partial sums of the Hurwitz zeta function and series expansions of the Lerch transcendent function. The new transformation coefficients we define within the article satisfy expansions by generalized harmonic number sequences, or the partial sums of the Hurwitz zeta function, which are analogous to known properties for the Stirling numbers of the first kind and for the known transformation coefficients employed to enumerate variants of the polylogarithm function series. Applications of the new results we prove …
The exponential generating functions of {n^(n+m)} for arbitrary integer m are expressed as rational functions of the e.g.f. of {n^(n-1)} [the tree function] and then of the e.g.f. of {n^n} [the endofunction function]. The coefficients in these rational functions include 2nd-order Eulerian numbers (a result of L. Carlitz), 2nd-order Stirling numbers, and Stirling numbers of the first kind for negative sets (in the sense of D. Loeb). Several combinatorial identities follow.
We study statistics on ordered set partitions whose generating functions are related to $p,q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. The main purpose of this paper is to provide bijective proofs of all the conjectures of \stein (Arxiv:math.CO/0605670). Our basic idea is to encode ordered partitions by a kind of path diagrams and explore the rich combinatorial properties of the latter structure. We also give a partition version of MacMahon's theorem on the equidistribution of the statistics inversion number and major index on words.
