The Gaussian curvature of a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold is uniquely determined by the choice of the metric. The formulas for computing the curvature in terms of components of the metric, in isothermal coordinates, involve the Laplacian operator and therefore, the problem of finding a Riemannian metric for a given curvature form may be viewed as a potential theory problem. This problem has, generally speaking, a multitude of solutions. To specify the solution uniquely, we ask that the metric have the mean value property for harmonic functions with respect to some given point. This means that we assume that the surface is simply connected and that it has a smooth boundary. In terms of the so-called metric potential, we are looking for a unique smooth solution to a nonlinear fourth order elliptic partial differential equation with second order Cauchy data given on the boundary. We find a simple condition on the curvature form which ensures that there exists a smooth mean value surface solution. It reads: the curvature form plus half the curvature form for the hyperbolic plane (with the same coordinates) should be $\le0$. The same analysis leads to results on the question of whether the canonical divisors in weighted Bergman spaces over the unit disk have extraneous zeros. Numerical work suggests that the above condition on the curvature form is essentially sharp.
Our problem is in spirit analogous to the classical Minkowski problem, where the sphere supplies the chart coordinates via the Gauss map.
Using the prescribed Webster scalar curvature flow, we prove some existence results on the 3-dimensional compact CR manifold with nonnegative CR Yamabe constant.
The paper is an attempt to resolve the prescribed Chern scalar curvature problem. We look for solutions within the conformal class of a fixed Hermitian metric. We divide the problem in three cases, according to the sign of the Gauduchon degree, that we analyse separately. In the case where the Gauduchon degree is negative, we prove that every non-identically zero and non-positive function is the Chern scalar curvature of a unique metric conformal to the fixed one. Moreover, if there exists a balanced metric with zero Chern scalar curvature, we prove that every smooth function changing sign wit…
In this work, we study the Yamabe flow corresponding to the prescribed scalar curvature problem on compact Riemannian manifolds with negative scalar curvature. The long time existence and convergence of the flow are proved under appropriate conditions on the prescribed scalar curvature function.
In this paper, we consider a class of prescribed Weingarten curvature equations. Under some sufficient condition, we obtain an existence result by the standard degree theory based on the a prior estimates for the solutions to the prescribed Weingarten curvature equations.
We prove an existence result for helicoidal graphs with prescribed mean curvature in a large class of warped product spaces which comprises space forms.
It is proved the existence and uniqueness of graphs with prescribed mean curvature in Riemannian submersions fibered by flow lines of a vertical Killing vector field.
We prove a criterion of existence of solutions conjectured by C. C. Chen and C. S. Lin [20] for the prescribed scalar curvature problem on the standard n-dimensional sphere.
We prove existence of compact spacelike hypersurfaces with prescribed k - curvature in de Sitter space, where the prescription function depends on both space and the tilt function.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of graphs with prescribed mean curvature function in a large class of Riemannian manifolds which comprises spaces endowed with a conformal Killing vector field.
Let $M$ be a quasi-Fuchsian three-manifold that contains a closed incompressible surface with principal curvatures within the range of the unit interval, for a prescribed function $H$ (with mild conditions) on $M$, we construct a closed incompressible surface with mean curvature $H$ . A direct application is the existence of embedded surfaces of prescribed constant mean curvatures with constants in $(-2,2)$.
We prove the existence of a complete locally Lipschitz continuous hypersurface in weak sense with prescribed Weingarten curvature and asymptotic boundary at infinity in hyperbolic space under certain assumptions.
We prove the existence of smooth closed hypersurfaces of prescribed mean curvature homeomorphic to $S^n$ for small $n, n\le6$, provided there are barriers.
We develop a compactness result near the boundary for families of locally convex immersions. We also develop a mod 2 degree theory for immersion of constant (and prescribed) Gaussian curvature with prescribed boundary. These are then used to solve the Plateau problem for immersions of constant (and prescribed) Gaussian curvature in general Hadamard manifolds.
In this paper, we establish the curvature estimates for $p$-convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of prescribed curvature with $p\geq \frac{n}{2}$. The existence of a star-shaped hypersurface of prescribed curvature is obtained. We also prove a type of interior $C^2$ estimates for solutions to the Dirichlet problem of the corresponding equation.
In this paper we study rotational surfaces in the space $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ whose mean curvature is given as a prescribed function of their angle function. These surfaces generalize, among others, the ones of constant mean curvature and the translating solitons of the mean curvature flow. Using a phase plane analysis we construct entire rotational graphs, catenoid-type surfaces, and exhibit a classification result when the prescribed function is linear.
We give an explicit formula for singular surfaces of revolution with prescribed unbounded mean curvature. Using it, we give conditions for singularities of that surfaces. Periodicity of that surface is also discussed.
In this paper we find strictly locally convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with prescribed curvature and boundary. The main result is that if the given data admits a strictly locally convex radial graph as a subsolution, we can find a radial graph realizing the prescribed curvature and boundary. As an application we show any smooth domain on the boundary of a compact strictly convex body can be deformed to a smooth hypersurface with the same boundary (inside the convex body) and realizing any prescribed curvature function smaller than the curvature of the body.
We consider two-dimensional immersions of disc-type in R^n. We focus well known classical concepts and study the nonlinear elliptic systems of such mappings. Using an Osserman-type condition we give a priori-estimates of the principle curvatures for certain graphs in R^4 with prescribed mean curvature.
In this paper, we study the Dirichlet problem for $p$-convex hypersurfaces with prescribed curvature. We prove that there exists a graphic hypersurface satisfying the prescribed curvature equation with homogeneous boundary condition. An interior curvature estimate is also obtained.
These are lecture notes for the mini-course \textit{PDE and hypersurfaces with prescribed mean curvature} held in Federal University of São Carlos at the Workshop on Submanifold Theory and Geometric Analysis, August 05 -- 09, 2019. The aim of these notes is to introduce to the geometers useful tools from the \textit{Theory of partial differential equations} which are used in order to obtain hypersurfaces with prescribed mean curvature. For instance, graphs with prescribed mean curvature can be obtained by solving the Dirichlet problem for a particular quasilinear elliptic partial differential …
We prove the existence of (branched) conformal immersions F: S^2 -> R^3 with mean curvature H > 0 arbitrarily prescribed up to a 3-dimensional affine indeterminacy. A similar result is proved for the space forms S^3, H^3 and partial results for surfaces of higher genus.
We construct minimal laminations with prescribed singularities on a line segment using perturbation techniques and PDE methods. In addition to the singular set, the rate of curvature blowup is also prescribable in our construction, and we show that all curvature blowup rates between quadratic and quartic arise. Our result generalizes an earlier result of the author and of Hoffman and White.
The existence of a smooth complete strictly locally convex hypersurface with prescribed scalar curvature and asymptotic boundary at infinity in $\mathbb{H}^{3}$ is proved under the assumption that there exists a strictly locally convex subsolution.
We study rotational surfaces in Euclidean 3-space whose Gauss curvature is given as a prescribed function of its Gauss map. By means of a phase plane analysis and under mild assumptions on the prescribed function, we generalize the classification of rotational surfaces of constant Gauss curvature; exhibit examples that cannot exist in the constant Gauss curvature case; and analyze the asymptotic behavior of strictly convex graphs. We also prove the existence of singular radial solutions intersecting orthogonally the axis of rotation.
The existence of closed hypersurfaces of prescribed scalar curvature in globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds is proved provided there are barriers.
Consider a compact Lie group $G$ and a closed Lie subgroup $H<G$. Let $\mathcal M$ be the set of $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics on the homogeneous space $M=G/H$. By studying variational properties of the scalar curvature functional on $\mathcal M$, we obtain an existence theorem for solutions to the prescribed Ricci curvature problem on $M$. To illustrate the applicability of this result, we explore cases where $M$ is a generalised Wallach space and a generalised flag manifold.
We construct families of smooth functions $H\colon\mathbb{R}^{n+1}\to\mathbb{R}$ such that the Euclidean $(n+1)$-space is completely filled by not necessarily round hyperspheres of mean curvature $H$ at every point.
Utilizing a weight matrix we study surfaces of prescribed weighted mean curvature which yield a natural generalisation to critical points of anisotropic surface energies. We first derive a differential equation for the normal of immersions with prescribed weighted mean curvature, generalising a result of Clarenz and von der Mosel. Next we study graphs of prescribed weighted mean curvature, for which a quasilinear elliptic equation is proved. Using this equation, we can show height and boundary gradient estimates. Finally, we solve the Dirichlet problem for graphs of prescribed weighted mean cu…
The problem of the prescribed curvature measure is one of the important problems in differential geometry and nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we consider prescribed curvature measure problem in hyperbolic space. We obtain the existence of star-shaped k-convex bodies with prescribed (n-k)-th curvature measures (k<n) by establishing crucial C^2 regularity estimates for solutions to the corresponding fully nonlinear PDE in the hyperbolic space.
We obtain a classification result for rotational surfaces in the Heisenberg space and the universal cover of the special linear group, whose mean curvature is given as a prescribed $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. We show that these surfaces behave like the Delaunay surfaces of constant mean curvature, under some assumptions on the prescribed function. In contrast with the constant mean curvature case, we exhibit the existence of rotational, embedded tori, providing counterexamples of the Alexandrov problem for this class of immersed surfaces.
We prove new results on existence of solutions for the prescribed gaussian curvature problem on the euclidean sphere S^2. Those results are achieved by relating this problem with the holomorphic triples theory on Riemann surfaces. We think this approach might be applied to study some other semi-linear elliptic equations of 2nd order on the sphere.
We give a classification of non-removable isolated singularities for real analytic solutions of the prescribed mean curvature equation in Minkowski $3$-space.
We show the existence of a deformation process of hypersurfaces from a product space $M_1\times R$ into another product space $M_2\times R$ such that the relation of the principal curvatures of the deformed hypersurfaces can be controlled in terms of the sectional curvatures or Ricci curvatures of $M_1$ and $M_2$. In this way, we obtain barriers which are used for proving existence or non existence of hypersurfaces with prescribed curvatures in a general product space $M\times R$.
We construct a sequence of compact embedded minimal disks in a ball in Euclidean 3-space, whose boundaries lie in the boundary of the ball, such that the curvature blows up only at a prescribed discrete (and hence, finite) set of points on the x_3-axis. This extends a result of Colding and Minicozzi, who constructed a sequence for which the curvature blows up only at the center of the ball, and is a partial affirmative answer to the larger question of the existence of a sequence for which the curvature blows up precisely on a prescribed closed set on the x_3-axis.
In this article we study a class of prescribed curvature problems on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds. To be precise, we derive local $C^0$-estimate under an asymptotic condition which is in effect optimal, and prove the existence of complete conformal metrics with prescribed curvature functions. A key ingredient of our strategy is Aviles-McOwen's result or its fully nonlinear version on the existence of complete conformal metrics with prescribed curvature functions on manifolds with boundary.
We prove an existence theorem for convex hypersurfaces of prescribed Gauss curvature in the complement of a compact set in Euclidean space which are close to a cone.
We consider the problem of finding a metric in a given conformal class with prescribed nonpositive scalar curvature and nonpositive boundary mean curvature on a compact manifold with boundary, and establish a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of a conformal invariant that measures the zero set of the target curvatures.
For any prescribed closed subset of a line segment in Euclidean 3-space, we construct a sequence of minimal disks that are properly embedded in an open solid cylinder around the segment and that have curvatures blowing up precisely at the points of the closed set.
Existence of convex body with prescribed generalized curvature measures is discussed, this result is obtained by making use of Guan-Li-Li's innovative techniques. In surprise, that methods has also brought us to promote Ivochkina's $C^2$ estimates for prescribed curvature equation in \cite{I1, I}.
The gluing technique is used to construct hypersurfaces in Euclidean space having approximately constant prescribed mean curvature. These surfaces are perturbations of unions of finitely many spheres of the same radius assembled end-to-end along a line segment. The condition on the existence of these hypersurfaces is the vanishing of the sum of certain integral moments of the spheres with respect the prescribed mean curvature function.
