We construct a sequence of compact embedded minimal disks in a ball in Euclidean 3-space, whose boundaries lie in the boundary of the ball, such that the curvature blows up only at a prescribed discrete (and hence, finite) set of points on the x_3-axis. This extends a result of Colding and Minicozzi, who constructed a sequence for which the curvature blows up only at the center of the ball, and is a partial affirmative answer to the larger question of the existence of a sequence for which the curvature blows up precisely on a prescribed closed set on the x_3-axis.
We construct minimal laminations with prescribed singularities on a line segment using perturbation techniques and PDE methods. In addition to the singular set, the rate of curvature blowup is also prescribable in our construction, and we show that all curvature blowup rates between quadratic and quartic arise. Our result generalizes an earlier result of the author and of Hoffman and White.
For any prescribed closed subset of a line segment in Euclidean 3-space, we construct a sequence of minimal disks that are properly embedded in an open solid cylinder around the segment and that have curvatures blowing up precisely at the points of the closed set.
Given a constant $k>1$ and a real valued function $K$ on the hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2$, we study the problem of finding, for any $ε\approx 0$, a closed and embedded curve $u^ε$ in $\mathbb H^2$ having geodesic curvature $k+εK(u^ε)$ at each point.
The aim of this paper is to extend classic results of the theory of CMC surfaces in the product spaces to the class of immersed surfaces in $\mathbb{M}^2(κ)\times\mathbb{R}$ whose mean curvature is given as a $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. We cover topics such as the existence of a priori curvature estimates for graphs, height estimates for horizontal and vertical compact graphs and a structure-type result, which classifies all the simply connected, properly embedded surfaces with finite topology.
We prove that, for a generic set of smooth prescription functions $h$ on a closed ambient manifold, there always exists a nontrivial, smooth, closed hypersurface of prescribed mean curvature $h$. The solution is either an embedded minimal hypersurface with integer multiplicity, or a non-minimal almost embedded hypersurface of multiplicity one. More precisely, we show that our previous min-max theory, developed for constant mean curvature hypersurfaces, can be extended to construct min-max prescribed mean curvature hypersurfaces for certain classes of prescription function, including smooth Mor…
For every genus $g$, we prove that $S^2 \times R$ contains complete, properly embedded, genus-$g$ minimal surfaces whose two ends are asymptotic to helicoids of any prescribed pitch. We also show that as the radius of the $S^2$ tends to infinity, these examples converge smoothly to complete, properly embedded minimal surfaces in $R^3$ that are helicoidal at infinity. We prove that helicoidal surfaces in $R^3$ of every prescribed genus occur as such limits of examples in $S^2\times R$.
We prove that for each positive integer g, there exists a complete minimal surface of genus g that is properly embedded in three-dimensional euclidean space and that is asymptotic to the helicoid.
We construct a sequence of compact, oriented, embedded, two-dimensional surfaces of genus one into Euclidean 3-space with prescribed, almost constant, mean curvature of the form $H(X)=1+{A}{|X|^{-γ}}$ for $|X|$ large, when $A<0$ and $γ\in(0,2)$. Such surfaces are close to sections of unduloids with small necksize, folded along circumferences centered at the origin and with larger and larger radii. The construction involves a deep study of the corresponding Jacobi operators, an application of the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method and some variational argument.
Let $M$ be a quasi-Fuchsian three-manifold that contains a closed incompressible surface with principal curvatures within the range of the unit interval, for a prescribed function $H$ (with mild conditions) on $M$, we construct a closed incompressible surface with mean curvature $H$ . A direct application is the existence of embedded surfaces of prescribed constant mean curvatures with constants in $(-2,2)$.
We present a numerical study of the local stability of mean curvature flow of rotationally symmetric, complete noncompact hypersurfaces with Type-II curvature blowup. Our numerical analysis employs a novel overlap method that constructs "numerically global" (i.e., with spatial domain arbitrarily large but finite) flow solutions with initial data covering analytically distinct regions. Our numerical results show that for certain prescribed families of perturbations, there are two classes of initial data that lead to distinct behaviors under mean curvature flow. Firstly, there is a "near" class …
We obtain a classification result for rotational surfaces in the Heisenberg space and the universal cover of the special linear group, whose mean curvature is given as a prescribed $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. We show that these surfaces behave like the Delaunay surfaces of constant mean curvature, under some assumptions on the prescribed function. In contrast with the constant mean curvature case, we exhibit the existence of rotational, embedded tori, providing counterexamples of the Alexandrov problem for this class of immersed surfaces.
Motivated by the large ammount of results obtained for minimal and positive constant mean curvature surfaces in several ambient spaces, the aim of this paper is to obtain half-space theorems for properly immersed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ whose mean curvature is given as a prescribed function of its Gauss map. In order to achieve this purpose, we will study the behavior at infinity of a 1-parameter family of properly embedded annuli that are analogous to the usual minimal catenoids.
For an $H>0$ rotationally symmetric embedded torus $N_{0} \subset \mathbb{R}^{3}$, evolved by Inverse Mean Curvature Flow, we show that the total curvature $|A|$ remains bounded up to the singular time $T_{\max}$. We then show convergence of the $N_{t}$ to a $C^{1}$ rotationally symmetric embedded torus $N_{T_{\max}}$ as $t \rightarrow T_{\max}$ without rescaling. Later, we observe a scale-invariant $L^{2}$ energy estimate on any embedded solution of the flow in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ that may be useful in ruling out curvature blowup near singularities in general.
We develop a global theory for complete hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ whose mean curvature is given as a prescribed function of its Gauss map. This theory extends the usual one of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, and also that of self-translating solitons of the mean curvature flow. For the particular case $n=2$, we will obtain results regarding a priori height and curvature estimates, non-existence of complete stable surfaces, and classification of properly embedded surfaces with at most one end.
In this paper we prove the existence of families of n-dimensional complete embedded minimal submanifolds of C^n with a prescribed configuration of k>1 asymptotic planes. These submanifolds are obtained by desingularizing the intersection of the asymptotes, using a gluing theorem applied to a generalization of a special lagrangian "hyperbola" found by Lawlor.
In $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ there is a two-parameter family of properly embedded minimal annuli foliated by circles. In this paper we show that this family contains all properly embedded minimal annuli. We use the description of minimal annuli in $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ by periodic harmonic maps $G : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{S}^2$ of finite type. Due to the algebraic geometric correspondence of Hitchin [14], these harmonic maps are parametrized by hyperelliptic algebraic curves together with Abelian differentials with prescribed poles. We deform annuli by deforming spectral data…
We prove that for any given compact Riemannian manifold $N$ of dimension $n+1 \geq 3$ and any non-negative Lipschitz function $g$ on $N$, there exists a quasi-embedded, boundaryless hypersurface $M \subset N,$ of class $C^{2, α}$ for any $α\in (0,1),$ such that $M$ is the image of a two-sided immersion whose mean curvature is given by $gν$ for an appropriate choice of continuous unit normal $ν$ to the immersion; and moreover, the singular set $Σ= \overline{M} \setminus M$ is empty if $2 \leq n \leq 6,$ finite if $n=7$ and satisfies ${\mathcal H}^{n-7 + γ}(Σ) = 0$ for every $γ>0$ if $n \geq 8$.…
In previous work [GIKW21], we have presented evidence from numerical simulations that the Type-II singularities of mean curvature flow (MCF) of rotationally-symmetric, complete, noncompact embedded hypersurfaces constructed in [IW19, IWZ21] are stable. More precisely, it is shown in that paper that for small rotationally-symmetric perturbations of initial embeddings near the "tip", numerical simulations of MCF of such initial embeddings develop the same Type-II singularities with the same "bowl soliton" blowup behaviors in a neighborhood of the singularity. It is also shown in that work that f…
We prove sharp criteria on the behavior of radial curvature for the existence of asymptotically flat or hyperbolic Riemannian manifolds with prescribed sets of eigenvalues embedded in the spectrum of the Laplacian. In particular, we construct such manifolds with dense embedded point spectrum and sharp curvature bounds.
We revisit the problem of prescribing negative Gauss curvature for graphs embedded in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ when $n\geq 2$. The problem reduces to solving a fully nonlinear Monge-Ampère equation that becomes hyperbolic in the case of negative curvature. We show that the linearization around a graph with Lorentzian Hessian can be written as a geometric wave equation for a suitable Lorentzian metric in dimensions $n\geq 3$. Using energy estimates for the linearized equation and a version of the Nash-Moser iteration, we show the local solvability for the fully nonlinear equation. Finally, we discuss …
In the Euclidean unit three-ball, we construct compact, embedded, two-sided free boundary minimal surfaces with connected boundary and prescribed high genus, by a gluing construction tripling the equatorial disc. Aside from the equatorial disc itself, these are the first examples in the three-ball of compact free boundary minimal surfaces with connected boundary.
We prove that on a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $3$ or higher, with positive Ricci curvature, the Allen--Cahn min-max scheme (implemented by the first author and N. Wickramasekera in 2020), with prescribing function taken to be a non-zero constant $λ$, produces an embedded hypersurface of constant mean curvature $λ$ ($λ$-CMC). More precisely, we prove that the interface arising from said min-max contains no even-multiplicity minimal hypersurface and no quasi-embedded points (both of these occurrences are in principle possible in the conclusions of the aforementioned work by the fir…
This paper concerns the global theory of properly embedded spacelike surfaces in three-dimensional Minkowski space in relation to their Gaussian curvature. We prove that every regular domain which is not a wedge is uniquely foliated by properly embedded convex surfaces of constant Gaussian curvature. This is a consequence of our classification of surfaces with bounded prescribed Gaussian curvature, sometimes called the Minkowski problem, for which partial results were obtained by Li, Guan-Jian-Schoen, and Bonsante-Seppi. Some applications to minimal Lagrangian self-maps of the hyperbolic plane…

In this paper, we study self-expanding solutions for mean curvature flows and their relationship to minimal cones in Euclidean space. In [18], Ilmanen proved the existence of self-expanding hypersurfaces with prescribed tangent cones at infinity. If the cone is $C^{3,α}$-regular and mean convex (but not area-minimizing), we can prove that the corresponding self-expanding hypersurfaces are smooth, embedded, and have positive mean curvature everywhere (see Theorem 1.1). As a result, for regular minimal but not area-minimizing cones we can give an affirmative answer to a problem arisen by Lawson …
