The paper has been revised; the main change concerns the computation of the differential of the element of degree 4 in the minimal model of the space of non-parametrized embedded symplectic balls
We compute in this note the full homotopy type of the space of symplectic embeddings of the standard ball $B^4(c) \subset \R^4$ (where $c= πr^2$ is the capacity of the standard ball of radius $r$) into the 4-dimensional rational symplectic manifold $M_μ= (S^2 \times S^2, μ\om_0 \oplus \om_0)$ where $\om_0$ is the area form on the sphere with total area 1 and $μ$ belongs to the interval $(1,2]$. We know, by the work of Lalonde-Pinsonnault, that this space retracts to the space of symplectic frames of $M_μ$ for any value of $c$ smaller than the critical value $μ-1$, and that its homotopy type does change when $c$ crosses that value. In this paper, we compute the homotopy type for the case $c \ge μ-1$ and prove that it is not the type of a finite CW-complex.
The paper deals with relations between the Hard Lefschetz property, (non)vanishing of Massey products and the evenness of odd-degree Betti numbers of closed symplectic manifolds. It is known that closed symplectic manifolds can violate all these properties (in contrast with the case of Kaehler manifolds). However, the relations between such homotopy properties seem to be not analyzed. This analysis may shed a new light on topology of symplectic manifolds. In the paper, we summarize our knowledge in tables (different in the simply-connected and in symplectically aspherical cases). Also, we disc…
Using a basic idea of Sullivan's rational homotopy theory, one can see a Lie groupoid as the fundamental groupoid of its Lie algebroid. This paper studies analogues of Lie algebroids with non-trivial higher homotopy. Using various homotopy classes one can obtain e.g. central extensions of loop groups, or one can integrate a Lie biagebroid to a double symplectic groupoid. When combined with symplectic geometry, this idea leads to an infinite sequence of notions, starting with sympectic manifolds, Poisson manifolds and Courant algebroids. They are interrelated with higher-dimensional variational…
Let M:=(M^{4},\om) be a 4-dimensional rational ruled symplectic manifold and denote by w_{M} its Gromov width. Let Emb_ω(B^{4}(c),M) be the space of symplectic embeddings of the standard ball B^4(c) \subset \R^4 of radius r and of capacity c:= πr^2 into (M,\om). By the work of Lalonde and Pinsonnault, we know that there exists a critical capacity \ccrit \in (0,w_{M}] such that, for all c\in(0,\ccrit), the embedding space Emb_ω(B^{4}(c),M) is homotopy equivalent to the space of symplectic frames \SFr(M). We also know that the homotopy type of Emb_ω(B^{4}(c),M) changes when c reaches \ccrit and …
A study on the relation between the smooth structure of a symplectic homotopy K3 surface and its symplectic symmetries is initiated. A measurement of exoticness of a symplectic homotopy K3 surface is introduced, and the influence of an effective action of a K3 group via symplectic symmetries is investigated. It is shown that an effective action by various maximal symplectic K3 groups forces the corresponding homotopy K3 surface to be minimally exotic with respect to our measure. (However, the standard K3 is the only known example of such minimally exotic homotopy K3 surfaces.) The possible str…
The rational homology balls $B_n$ appeared in Fintushel and Stern's rational blow-down construction [FS2]. Later, Symington [Sy1], defined this operation in the symplectic category. In [Kh2], the author defined the inverse procedure, the symplectic rational blow-up. In this paper, we study the obstructions to symplectically rationally blowing up a symplectic 4-manifold, i.e. the obstructions to symplectically embedding the rational homology balls $B_n$ into a symplectic 4-manifold. We prove a theorem and give additional examples which suggest that in order to symplectically embed the rational …
This short note presents a simple construction of nonisotopic symplectic tori representing the same primitive homology class in the symplectic 4-manifold E(1)_K, obtained by knot surgery on the rational elliptic surface E(1) with the left-handed trefoil knot K. E(1)_K has the simplest homotopy type among simply-connected symplectic 4-manifolds known to exhibit such property.
We present a general framework for reduction of symplectic Q-manifolds via graded group actions. In this framework, the homological structure on the acting group is a multiplicative multivector field.
In this paper we prove the connectedness of symplectic ball packings in the complement of a spherical Lagrangian, S^2 or RP^2, in symplectic manifolds that are rational or ruled. Via a symplectic cutting construction this is a natural extension of McDuff's connectedness of ball packings in other settings and this result has applications to several different questions: smooth knotting and unknottedness results for spherical Lagrangians, the transitivity of the action of the symplectic Torelli group, classifying Lagrangian isotopy classes in the presence of knotting, and detecting Floer-theoreti…
In this paper we show that the classical results on the existence and uniqueness of moment maps in symplectic geometry generalize directly to weak homotopy moment maps in multisym- plectic geometry. In particular, we show that their existence and uniqueness is governed by a Lie algebra cohomology complex which reduces to the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex in the symplectic setup
A homotopy 4-ball is a smooth 4-manifold with boundary $S^3$ that is homotopy-equivalent to the standard $B^4$. The smooth 4-dimensional Schoenflies problem asks whether every homotopy 4-ball in $S^4$ (or equivalently $\mathbb{C}^2$) is standard. It is well-known that if a homotopy 4-ball embeds as a compact, pseudoconvex domain in a Stein surface, then it must be standard. In this paper, we describe a compelling reimbedding construction for homotopy 4-balls in $\mathbb{C}^2$. In particular, given a homotopy 4-ball in $\mathbb{C}^2$, we construct a diffeomorphic domain that is the union of thr…
Let E(1)_K denote the closed 4-manifold that is homotopy equivalent (hence homeomorphic) to the rational elliptic surface E(1) and is obtained by performing Fintushel-Stern knot surgery on E(1) using a knot K in S^3. We construct an infinite family of homologous non-isotopic symplectic tori representing a primitive homology class in E(1)_K when K is any nontrivial fibred knot in S^3. We also show how these tori can be non-isotopically embedded as homologous symplectic submanifolds in other symplectic 4-manifolds.
In this paper we describe the intersection between the balls of maximal symplectic packings of $¶^2$. This analysis shows the existence of singular points for maximal packings of $¶^2$ by more than three equal balls. It also yields a construction of a class of very regular examples of maximal packings by five balls.
By a result of Kedra and Pinsonnault, we know that the topology of groups of symplectomorphisms of symplectic 4-manifolds is complicated in general. However, in all known (very specific) examples, the rational cohomology rings of symplectomorphism groups are finitely generated. In this paper, we compute the rational homotopy Lie algebra of symplectomorphism groups of the 3-point blow-up of the projective plane (with an arbitrary symplectic form) and show that in some cases, depending on the sizes of the blow-ups, it is infinite dimensional. Moreover, we explain how the topology is generated by…
In this paper we obtain new obstructions to symplectic embeddings of the four-dimensional polydisk $P(a,1)$ into the ball $B(c)$ for $2\leq a<\frac{\sqrt{7}-1} {\sqrt{7}-2} \approx 2.549$, extending work done by Hind-Lisi and Hutchings. Schlenk's folding construction permits us to conclude our bound on $c$ is optimal. Our proof makes use of the combinatorial criterion necessary for one "convex toric domain" to symplectically embed into another introduced by Hutchings in \cite{Beyond}. Additionally, we prove that if certain symplectic embeddings of four dimensional convex toric domains exist th…
In this note we prove that, for any integer n, there exist a smooth 4-manifold, homotopic to a K3 surface, defined by applying the link surgery method of Fintushel-Stern to a certain 2-component graph link, which admits n inequivalent symplectic structures Keywords: Symplectic topology of 4-manifolds; Seiberg-Witten theory
We consider the homotopy type of maps between symplectic surface whose graphs form symplectic submanifolds of the product. We give a purely topological model for this space in terms of maps with constrained numbers of pre-images. We use this to show that the dependence of the homotopy type on the area forms of each surface is quantized- it changes only when the parameters pass certain discrete levels. When the domain is a sphere or torus, and its total area is smaller than the range, we compute the full homotopy type of the low degree components. We also give an example, showing that the homot…
We define and solve the toric version of the symplectic ball packing problem, in the sense of listing all 2n-dimensional symplectic-toric manifolds which admit a perfect packing by balls embedded in a symplectic and torus equivariant fashion. In order to do this we first describe a problem in geometric-combinatorics which is equivalent to the toric symplectic ball packing problem. Then we solve this problem using arguments from Convex Geometry and Delzant theory. Applications to symplectic blowing-up are also presented, and some further questions are raised in the last section.
We study symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids into balls. In the main construction, we show that a given embedding of 2m-dimensional ellipsoids can be suspended to embeddings of ellipsoids in any higher dimension. In dimension 6,s if the ratio of the areas of any two axes is sufficiently large then the ellipsoid is flexible in the sense that it fully fills a ball. We also show that the same property holds in all dimensions for sufficiently thin ellipsoids E(1,..., a). A consequence of our study is that in arbitrary dimension a ball can be fully filled by any sufficiently large number of identic…
We exhibit monotone Lagrangian tori inside the standard symplectic four-dimensional unit ball that become Hamiltonian isotopic to the Clifford torus, i.e.~the standard product torus, only when considered inside a strictly larger ball (they are not even symplectomorphic to a standard torus inside the unit ball). These tori are then used to construct new examples of symplectic embeddings of toric domains into the unit ball which are symplectically knotted in the sense of J.~Gutt and M.~Usher. We also give a characterisation of the Clifford torus inside the ball as well as the projective plane in…
In this note, we obtain new obstructions to symplectic embeddings of a product of disks (a polydisk) into a 4-dimensional ball. The polydisk P(r,s) is the product of the disk of area r with the disk of area s. The ball of capacity a, denoted B(a), is the ball with πr^2 \le a. We show P(1,2) embeds in B^4(a) if and only if a is at least 3. This shows the inclusion of P(1,2) in B^4(3) is optimal. The necessity of a \ge 3 implies that for this particular embedding problem neither the Ekeland-Hofer nor ECH capacities give a sharp obstruction. We contrast this with the case of ellipsoid embeddings …
We prove that any two irreducible cuspidal Hurwitz curves $C_0$ and $C_1$ (or more generally, curves with A-type singularities) in the Hirzebruch surface $F_N$ with coinciding homology classes and sets of singularities are regular homotopic; and symplectically regular homotopic if $C_0$ and $C_1$ are symplectic with respect to a compatible symplectic form.
We show how to reduce the problem of symplectically embedding one 4-dimensional rational ellipsoid into another to a problem of embedding disjoint unions of balls into appropriate blow ups of \C P^2. For example, the problem of embedding the ellipsoid E(1,k) into a ball B is equivalent to that of embedding k disjoint equal balls into \C P^2, and so can be solved by the work of Gromov, McDuff--Polterovich and Biran. (Here k is the ratio of the area of the major axis to that of the minor axis.) As a consequence we show that the ball may be fully filled by the ellipsoid E(1,k) for k=1,4 and all k…
We define Maslov--type indices associated to contact and symplectic transformation groups. There are two such families of indices. The first class of indices are maps from the homotopy groups of the contactomorphism or symplectomorphism group to a quotient of the integers. These are based on a generalization of the Maslov index. The second class of indices are maps from the homotopy groups of the space of contact structures or the space of cohomologous symplectic forms to the homotopy groups of a simple homogeneous space. We provide a detailed construction and describe some properties of these…
We study in this paper the rational homotopy type of the space of symplectic embeddings of the standard ball $B^4(c) \subset \R^4$ into 4-dimensional rational symplectic manifolds. We compute the rational homotopy groups of that space when the 4-manifold has the form $M_λ= (S^2 \times S^2, μω_0 \oplus ω_0)$ where $ω_0$ is the area form on the sphere with total area 1 and $μ$ belongs to the interval $[1,2]$. We show that, when $μ$ is 1, this space retracts to the space of symplectic frames, for any value of $c$. However, for any given $1 < μ< 2$, the rational homotopy type of that space changes…
We prove that the non-squeezing theorem of Gromov holds for symplectomorphisms on an infinite-dimensional symplectic Hilbert space, under the assumption that the image of the ball is convex. The proof is based on the construction by duality methods of a symplectic capacity for bounded convex neighbourhoods of the origin. We also discuss some examples of symplectomorphisms on infinite-dimensional spaces exhibiting behaviours which would be impossible in finite dimensions.
Let M be a symplectic-toric manifold of dimension at least four. This paper investigates the so called symplectic ball packing problem in the toral equivariant setting. We show that the set of toric symplectic ball packings of M admits the structure of a convex polytope. Previous work of the first author shows that up to equivalence, only CP^1 x CP^1 and CP^2 admit density one packings when n=2 and only CP^n admits density one packings when n>2. In contrast, we show that for a fixed n>=2 and each r in (0, 1), there are uncountably many inequivalent 2n-dimensional symplectic-toric manifolds wit…
For an aspherical symplectic manifold, closed or with convex contact boundary, and with vanishing first Chern class, a Floer chain complex is defined for Hamiltonians linear at infinity with coefficients in the group ring of the fundamental group. For two non-degenerate Hamiltonians of the same slope continuation maps are shown to be simple homotopy equivalences. As a corollary the number of contractible Hamiltonian orbits of period 1 can be bounded from below.
We determine the homotopy type of isotropic torus complements in closed contact manifolds in terms of Reeb dynamics of special contact forms. For that we utilize holomorphic curve techniques known from symplectic field theory as Gromov-Hofer compactness and localized transversality on non-compact contact manifolds.
We prove that the group of compactly supported symplectomorphisms of the standard symplectic ball admits a continuum of linearly independent real-valued homogeneous quasimorphisms. In addition these quasimorphisms are Lipschitz in the Hofer metric and have the following property: the value of each such quasimorphism on any symplectomorphism supported in any "sufficiently small" open subset of the ball equals the Calabi invariant of the symplectomorphism. By a "sufficiently small" open subset we mean that it can be displaced from itself by a symplectomorphism of the ball. As a byproduct we show…
We construct symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids of dimension $2n \ge 6$ into the product of a 4-ball or 4-dimensional cube with Euclidean space. A sequence of these embeddings can be shown to be optimal.
The aim of this paper is to explain a link between symplectic isotopies of open objects such as balls and flexibility properties of symplectic hypersurfaces. We get connectedness results for spaces of symplectic ellipsoids or maximal packings of $P^2$.
We study the symplectic topology of some finite algebraic quotients of the An Milnor fibre which are diffeomorphic to the rational homology balls that appear in Fintushel and Stern's rational blowdown construction. We prove that these affine surfaces have no closed exact Lagrangian submanifolds by using the already available and deep understanding of the Fukaya category of the An Milnor fibre coming from homological mirror symmetry. On the other hand, we find Floer theoretically essential monotone Lagrangian tori, finitely covered by the monotone tori which we study in the An Milnor fibre. We …
We apply the method of filling with holomorphic discs to a 4-dimensional symplectic cobordism with the standard contact 3-sphere as a convex boundary component. We establish the following dichotomy: either the cobordism is diffeomorphic to a ball, or there is a periodic Reeb orbit of quantifiably short period in the concave boundary of the cobordism. This allows us to give a unified treatment of various results concerning Reeb dynamics on contact 3-manifolds, symplectic fillability, the topology of symplectic cobordisms, symplectic non-squeezing, and the non-existence of exact Lagrangian surfa…
We prove that, for nice classes of infinite-dimensional smooth groups G, natural constructions in smooth topology and symplectic topology yield homotopically coherent group actions of G. This yields a bridge between infinite-dimensional smooth groups and homotopy theory. The result relies on two computations: One showing that the diffeological homotopy groups of the Milnor classifying space BG are naturally equivalent to the (continuous) homotopy groups, and a second showing that a particular strict category localizes to yield the homotopy type of BG. We then prove a result in symplectic geome…
Consider the image of a 2n-dimensional unit ball by an open symplectic embedding into the standard symplectic vector space of dimension 2n. Its 2k-dimensional shadow is its orthogonal projection into a complex subspace of real dimension 2k. Is it true that the volume of this 2k-dimensional shadow is at least the volume of the unit 2k-dimensional ball? This statement is trivially true when k = n, and when k = 1 it is a reformulation of Gromov's non-squeezing theorem. Therefore, this question can be considered as a middle-dimensional generalization of the non-squeezing theorem. We investigate th…
In this paper we compute the homotopy groups of the symplectomorphism groups of the 3-, 4- and 5-point blow-ups of the projective plane (considered as monotone symplectic Del Pezzo surfaces). Along the way, we need to compute the homotopy groups of the compactly supported symplectomorphism groups of the cotangent bundle of $\mathbf{RP}^{2}$ and of $\mathbf{C}^*\times\mathbf{C}$. We also make progress in the case of the $A_n$-Milnor fibres: here we can show that the (compactly supported) Hamiltonian group is contractible and that the symplectic mapping class group embeds in the braid group on $…
The Milnor fibre of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing of a Wahl singularity is a rational homology ball $B_{p,q}$. For a canonically polarised surface of general type $X$, it is known that there are bounds on the number $p$ for which $B_{p,q}$ admits a symplectic embedding into $X$. In this paper, we give a recipe to construct unbounded sequences of symplectically embedded $B_{p,q}$ into surfaces of general type equipped with non-canonical symplectic forms. Ultimately, these symplectic embeddings come from Mori's theory of flips, but we give an interpretation in terms of almost toric structu…
Frames provide redundant, stable representations of data which have important applications in signal processing. We introduce a connection between symplectic geometry and frame theory and show that many important classes of frames have natural symplectic descriptions. Symplectic tools seem well-adapted to addressing a number of important questions about frames; in this paper we focus on the frame homotopy conjecture posed in 2002 and recently proved by Cahill, Mixon, and Strawn, which says that the space of finite unit norm tight frames is connected. We give a simple symplectic proof of a doub…
Let $(S^2,ω)$ be a symplectic sphere, and let $τ\colon S^2 \to S^2$ be an anti-symplectic involution of $(S^2,ω)$. We consider the product $(S^2,ω) \times (S^2,ω)$ endowed with the anti-symplectic involution $τ\times τ$, and study the space of monotone anti-invariant symplectic forms on this four-manifold. We show that this space is disconnected. In addition, during the course of the proof, we produce a diffeomorphism of the grassmannian (2,4) which induces the identity map on all homology and homotopy groups, but which is not homotopic to the identity.
We show that a stabilized convex symplectic (also called Liouville) manifold with the homotopy type of a half dimensional CW-complex is symplectomorphic to a flexible Weinstein manifold.
We present the various constructions of new symplectic $4$-manifolds with non-negative signatures using the complex surfaces on the BMY line $c_1^2 = 9χ_h$, the Cartwright-Steger surfaces, the quotients of Hirzebruch's certain line-arrangement surfaces, along with the exotic symplectic $4$-manifolds constructed in \cite{AP2, AS}. In particular, our constructions yield to (i) an irreducible symplectic and infinitely many non-symplectic $4$-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to $(2n-1)CP^{2}\#(2n-1)\bar{CP}^{2}$ for each integer $n \geq 9$, (ii) the families of simply connecte…
We construct a family of $6$-dimensional compact manifolds $M(A)$, which are simultaneously diffeomorphic to complex Calabi-Yau manifolds and symplectic Calabi-Yau manifolds. They have fundamental groups $\mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z}$, their odd-dimensional Betti numbers are even, they satisfy the hard Lefschetz property, and their real homotopy types are formal. However, $M(A) \times Y$ are not homotopy equivalent to any compact Kähler manifold for any topological space $Y$.
We show that every 4-dimensional torus with a linear symplectic form can be fully filled by one symplectic ball. If such a torus is not symplectomorphic to a product of 2-dimensional tori with equal sized factors, then it can also be fully filled by any finite collection of balls provided only that their total volume is less than that of the 4-torus with its given linear symplectic form.
Recently, McDuff and Schlenk determined the function c_{EB}(a) whose value at a is the infimum of the size of a 4-ball into which the ellipsoid E(1,a) symplectically embeds (here, a >= 1 is the ratio of the area of the large axis to that of the smaller axis of the ellipsoid). In this paper we look at embeddings into four-dimensional cubes instead, and determine the function c_{EC}(a) whose value at a is the infimum of the size of a 4-cube C^{4}(A) = D^{2}(A) times D^{2}(A) into which the ellipsoid E(1,a) symplectically embeds (where D^{2}(A) denotes the disc in mathbb{R}^{2} of area A). As in …
