The notion of vertex operator coalgebra is presented and motivated via the geometry of conformal field theory. Specifically, we describe the category of geometric vertex operator coalgebras, whose objects have comultiplicative structures meromorphically induced by conformal equivalence classes of worldsheets. We then show this category is isomorphic to the category of vertex operator coalgebras, which is defined in the language of formal algebra. The latter has several characteristics which give it the flavor of a coalgebra with respect to the structure of a vertex operator algebra and several characteristics that distinguish it from a standard dual -- both will be mentioned.
The notion of vertex operator coalgebra is presented which corresponds to the family of correlation functions of one string propagating in space-time splitting into n strings in conformal field theory. This notion is in some sense dual to the notion of vertex operator algebra. We prove that any vertex operator algebra equipped with a non-degenerate, Virasoro preserving, bilinear form gives rise to a corresponding vertex operator coalgebra.
We introduce the notion of vertex coalgebra, a generalization of vertex operator coalgebras. Next we investigate forms of cocommutativity, coassociativity, skew-symmetry, and an endomorphism, $D^*$, which hold on vertex coalgebras. The former two properties require grading. We then discuss comodule structure. We conclude by discussing instances where graded vertex coalgebras appear, particularly as related to Primc's vertex Lie algebra and (universal) enveloping vertex algebras.
Based on the definition of vertex coalgebra introduced by Hubbard [H], we prove that this notion can be reformulated using the Co-Commutator, Co-Skew symmetry and Co-Associator formulas without restrictions on the grading.
Given a non-semisimple braided tensor category, with oplax tensor functors from known braided tensor categories, we ask : How does this knowledge characterize the tensor product and the braiding? We develop tools that address this question. In particular we prove that the associator is fixed by the oplax tensor functors, and we show that a distinguished role is played by the coalgebra structure on the image of theses tensor functors. Our setup constrains the form of quasi bialgebras appearing in the logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture and it applies in particular to the representation categ…
We generalize the results on existence and uniqueness of integrals from compact groups and Hopf algebras in a pure (co)algebraic setting, and find a series of new results on (quasi)-co-Frobenius and semiperfect coalgebras. For a coalgebra $C$, we introduce the generalized space of integrals $\int_M=\Hom^C(C,M)$ associated to a right $C$-comodule $M$ and study connections between "uniqueness of integrals" $\dim(\int_M)\leq \dim(M)$ and "existence of integrals" $\dim(\int_M)\geq \dim(M)$ for all $M$ and representation theoretic properties of $C$: (quasi)-co-Frobenius, semiperfect. We show that a…
Huang's geometric interpretation of vertex operator algebras is extended to a supergeometric interpretation of vertex operator superalgebras. In particular, the geometry of spheres with punctures and local analytic coordinates in terms of exponentials of derivations is extended to the geometry of superspheres with punctures, a given spin structure, and local superconformal coordinates in terms of exponentials of superderivations. The notion of supergeometric vertex operator superalgebra is introduced, and in addition, the notion of (superalgebraic) vertex operator superalgebra over a Grassmann…
In this paper, the structure of cocommutative vertex bialgebras is investigated. For a general vertex bialgebra $V$, it is proved that the set $G(V)$ of group-like elements is naturally an abelian semigroup, whereas the set $P(V)$ of primitive elements is a vertex Lie algebra. For $g\in G(V)$, denote by $V_g$ the connected component containing $g$. Among the main results, it is proved that if $V$ is a cocommutative vertex bialgebra, then $V=\oplus_{g\in G(V)}V_g$, where $V_{\bf 1}$ is a vertex subbialgebra which is isomorphic to the vertex bialgebra ${\mathcal{V}}_{P(V)}$ associated to the ver…
The construction of auxiliary matrices for the six-vertex model at a root of unity is investigated from a quantum group theoretic point of view. Employing the concept of intertwiners associated with the quantum loop algebra $U_q(\tilde{sl}_2)$ at $q^N=1$ a three parameter family of auxiliary matrices is constructed. The elements of this family satisfy a functional relation with the transfer matrix allowing one to solve the eigenvalue problem of the model and to derive the Bethe ansatz equations. This functional relation is obtained from the decomposition of a tensor product of evaluation repre…
We give a lattice theoretical interpretation of generalized deep holes of the Leech lattice VOA $V_Λ$. We show that a generalized deep hole defines a "true" automorphism invariant deep hole of the Leech lattice. We also show that there is a correspondence between the set of isomorphism classes of holomorphic VOA $V$ of central charge $24$ having non-abelian $V_1$ and the set of equivalence classes of pairs $(τ, \tildeβ)$ satisfying certain conditions, where $τ\in Co_0$ and $\tildeβ$ is a $τ$-invariant deep hole of squared length $2$. It provides a new combinatorial approach towards the classif…
By using the elliptic analogue of the Drinfeld currents in the elliptic algebra U_{q,p}(\hat{sl}_N), we construct a L-operator, which satisfies the RLL-relations characterizing the face type elliptic quantum group B_{q,λ}(\hat{sl}_N). For this purpose, we introduce a set of new currents K_j(v) (1\leq j\leq N) in U_{q,p}(\hat{sl}_N). As in the N=2 case, we find a structure of U_{q,p}(\hat{sl}_N) as a certain tensor product of B_{q,λ}(\hat{sl}_N) and a Heisenberg algebra. In the level-one representation, we give a free field realization of the currents in U_{q,p}(\hat{sl}_N). Using the coalgebra…
The purposes of this work are to construct a class of homogeneous vertex representations of $C_l^{(1)} \ (l\geq2)$, and to derive a series of product-sum identities. These identities have fine interpretation in number theory.
We formulate an interpretation of the theory of physical superselection sectors in terms of vertex operator algebra language. Using this formulation we give a construction of simple current from a primary semisimple element of weight one. We then prove that if a rational vertex operator algebra $V$ has a simple current $M$ satisfying certain conditions, then $V\oplus M$ has a natural rational vertex operator (super)algebra structure. Applying our results to a vertex operator algebra associated to an affine Lie algebra, we construct its simple currents and the extension by a simple current. We …
This is the third part of the revised versions of the notes of three consecutive expository lectures given by Chongying Dong, Haisheng Li and Yi-Zhi Huang in the conference on Monster and vertex operator algebras at the Research Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto, September 4-9, 1994. In this part, we discuss an $S_{3}$-symmetry of the Jacobi identity, construct the contragredient module for a module for a vertex operator algebra and apply these to the construction of the vertex operator map for the moonshine module. We review the notions of intertwining operator, fusion rule and Verlin…
We develop some basic properties such as $p$-centers of affine vertex algebras and free field vertex algebras in prime characteristic. We show that the Wakimoto-Feigin-Frenkel homomorphism preserves the $p$-centers by providing explicit formulas. This allows us to formulate the notion of baby Wakimoto modules, which in particular provides an interpretation in the context of modular vertex algebras for Mathieu's irreducible character formula of modular affine Lie algebras at the critical level.
Structures of Lie algebras, Lie coalgebras, Lie bialgebras and Lie quasibialgebras are presented as solutions of Maurer-Cartan equations on corresponding governing differential graded Lie algebras using the big bracket construction of Kosmann-Schwarzbach. This approach provides a definition of an $L_\infty$-(quasi)bialgebra (strongly homotopy Lie (quasi)bialgebra). We recover an $L_\infty$-algebra structure as a particular case of our construction. The formal geometry interpretation leads to a definition of an $L_\infty$ (quasi)bialgebra structure on $V$ as a differential operator $Q$ on $V,$ …
The n-point correlation functions introduced by Bloch and Okounkov have already found several geometric connections and algebraic generalizations. In this Note we formulate a q,t-deformation of this n-point function. The key operator used in our formulation arises from the theory of Macdonald polynomials and affords a vertex operator interpretation. We obtain closed formulas for the n-point functions when n =1,2 in terms of the basic hypergeometric functions. We further generalize the q,t-deformed n-point function to more general vertex operators.
We extend the geometric approach to vertex algebras developed by the first author to twisted modules, allowing us to treat orbifold models in conformal field theory. Let $V$ be a vertex algebra, $H$ a finite group of automorphisms of $V$, and $C$ an algebraic curve such that $H \subset \on{Aut}(C)$. We show that a suitable collection of twisted $V$--modules gives rise to a section of a certain sheaf on the quotient $X=C/H$. We introduce the notion of conformal blocks for twisted modules, and analyze them in the case of the Heisenberg and affine Kac-Moody vertex algebras. We also give a chiral …
Let $V\subseteq A$ be a conformal inclusion of vertex operator algebras and let $\mathcal{C}$ be a category of grading-restricted generalized $V$-modules that admits the vertex algebraic braided tensor category structure of Huang-Lepowsky-Zhang. We give conditions under which $\mathcal{C}$ inherits semisimplicity from the category of grading-restricted generalized $A$-modules in $\mathcal{C}$, and vice versa. The most important condition is that $A$ be a rigid $V$-module in $\mathcal{C}$ with non-zero categorical dimension, that is, we assume the index of $V$ as a subalgebra of $A$ is finite a…
This paper is the first in a series of papers developing a functional-analytic theory of vertex (operator) algebras and their representations. For an arbitrary Z-graded finitely-generated vertex algebra (V, Y, 1) satisfying the standard grading-restriction axioms, a locally convex topological completion H of V is constructed. By the geometric interpretation of vertex (operator) algebras, there is a canonical linear map from the tensor product of V and V to the algebraic completion of V realizing linearly the conformal equivalence class of a genus-zero Riemann surface with analytically parametr…
We give an interpretation of the boson-fermion correspondence as a direct consequence of Jacobi-Trudi identity. This viewpoint enables us to construct from a generalized version of the Jacobi-Trudi identity the action of Clifford algebra on polynomial algebras that arrives as analogues of the algebra of symmetric functions. A generalized Giambelli identity is also proved to follow from that identity. As applications, we obtain explicit formulas for vertex operators corresponding to characters of the classical Lie algebras, shifted Schur functions, and generalized Schur symmetric functions asso…
An elliptic deformation of $\widehat{sl}_2$ is proposed. Our presentation of the algebra is based on the relation $RLL=LLR^*$, where $R$ and $R^*$ are eight-vertex $R$-matrices with the elliptic moduli chosen differently. In the trigonometric limit, this algebra reduces to a quotient of that proposed by Reshetikhin and Semenov-Tian-Shansky. Conjectures concerning highest weight modules and vertex operators are formulated, and the physical interpretation of $R^*$ is discussed.
In his landmark paper, Zhu associated two associative algebras to a vertex operator algebra: what are now called Zhu's algebra and the C_2-algebra. The former has a nice interpretation in terms of the representation theory of the VOA, while the latter only serves as a finiteness condition. In this paper we undertake first steps to unravel the interpretation of the C_2 vector space. In particular we suggest that it seems and controls the twisted representations of the VOA.
In this work, we introduce Urod algebras associated to simply-laced Lie algebras as well as the concept of translation of W-algebras. Both results are achieved by showing that the quantum Hamiltonian reduction commutes with tensoring with integrable representations, that is, for $V$ and $L$ an affine vertex algebra and an integrable affine vertex algebra associated with $\mathfrak{g}$, we have the vertex algebra isomorphism $H_{DS,f}^0(V\otimes L)\cong H_{DS,f}^0(V)\otimes L$, where in the left-hand-side the Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction is taken with respect to the diagonal action of $\widehat{\…
This article is the first report of an ongoing project aimed at finding a geometric interpretation of the Witten genus and other tmf classes. Section 2 reviews the sheaves of chiral differential operators (CDOs) over a complex manifold, including their construction, obstructions and relation with the Witten genus. In section 3, the structure of each sheaf of CDOs is reorganized in terms of modules over the sheaf of holomorphic functions. This invokes the notion of a differential graded vertex algebroid. The construction of sheaves of CDOs is due to Gorbounov, Malikov and Schechtman, and so is …
In order to solve two problems in deformation theory, we establish natural structures of homotopy Lie algebras and of homotopy associative algebras on tensor products of algebras of different types and on mapping spaces between coalgebras and algebras. When considering tensor products, such algebraic structures extend the Lie algebra or associative algebra structures that can be obtained by means of the Manin products of operads. These new homotopy algebra structures are proven by to compatible with the concepts of homotopy theory: $\infty$-morphisms and the Homotopy Transfer Theorem. We give …
We show that spherical Whittaker functions on an $n$-fold cover of the general linear group arise naturally from the quantum Fock space representation of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}(n))$ introduced by Kashiwara, Miwa and Stern (KMS). We arrive at this connection by reconsidering solvable lattice models known as `metaplectic ice' whose partition functions are metaplectic Whittaker functions. First, we show that a certain Hecke action on metaplectic Whittaker coinvariants agrees (up to twisting) with a Hecke action of Ginzburg, Reshetikhin, and Vasserot. This allows us to expand the framework o…
We give a geometric construction of the W_{1+infty} vertex algebra as the infinitesimal form of a factorization structure on an adelic Grassmannian. This gives a concise interpretation of the higher symmetries and Backlund-Darboux transformations for the KP hierarchy and its multicomponent extensions in terms of a version of "W_{1+infty}-geometry": the geometry of D-bundles on smooth curves, or equivalently torsion-free sheaves on cuspidal curves.
We analyze the structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations in detail. We give explicit formulas for its antipode, prove that it is a cofree coalgebra, determine its primitive elements and its coradical filtration, and show that it decomposes as a crossed product over the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. In addition, we describe the structure constants of the multiplication as a certain number of facets of the permutahedron. As a consequence we obtain a new interpretation of the product of monomial quasi-symmetric functions in terms of the facial structure of th…
