We analyze the structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations in detail. We give explicit formulas for its antipode, prove that it is a cofree coalgebra, determine its primitive elements and its coradical filtration, and show that it decomposes as a crossed product over the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. In addition, we describe the structure constants of the multiplication as a certain number of facets of the permutahedron. As a consequence we obtain a new interpretation of the product of monomial quasi-symmetric functions in terms of the facial structure of the cube. The Hopf algebra of Malvenuto and Reutenauer has a linear basis indexed by permutations. Our results are obtained from a combinatorial description of the Hopf algebraic structure with respect to a new basis for this algebra, related to the original one via Möbius inversion on the weak order on the symmetric groups. This is in analogy with the relationship between the monomial and fundamental bases of the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. Our results reveal a close relationship between the structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra and the weak order on the symmetric groups.

The Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra is a well-studied combinatorial Hopf algebra with a basis indexed by permutations. This algebra contains a wide variety of interesting sub Hopf algebras, in particular the Hopf algebra of plane binary trees introduced by Loday and Ronco. We compare two general constructions of subalgebras of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra, both of which include the Loday-Ronco algebra. The first is a construction by Reading defined in terms of lattice quotients of the weak order, and the second is a construction by Ronco in terms of graph associahedra. To make this comparison…
There is a long tradition of categorifying combinatorial Hopf algebras by the modules of a tower of algebras (or even better via the representation theory of a tower of groups). From the point of view of combinatorics, such a categorification supplies canonical bases, inner products, and a natural avenue to prove positivity results. Recent ideas in supercharacter theory have made fashioning the representation theory of a tower of groups into a Hopf structure more tractable. This paper applies such a program to the Malvenuto--Reutenauer Hopf algebra. In particular, we design functors on the rep…
The Goulden-Jackson cluster method is a powerful tool for counting words by occurrences of prescribed subwords, and was adapted by Elizalde and Noy for counting permutations by occurrences of prescribed consecutive patterns. In this paper, we lift the cluster method for permutations to the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra. Upon applying standard homomorphisms, our result specializes to both the cluster method for permutations as well as a q-analogue which keeps track of the inversion number statistic. We construct additional homomorphisms using the theory of shuffle-compatibility, leading to furth…
This paper builds on two covering Hopf algebras of the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions, with linear bases parameterized by compositions. One is the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra SSym of permutations, mapped onto QSym by taking descents of permutations. The other one is the recently introduced Hopf algebra RQSym of weak quasi-symmetric functions, mapped onto QSym by extracting compositions from weak compositions. We extend these two surjective Hopf algebra homomorphisms into a commutative diagram by introducing a Hopf algebra HSym, linearly spanned by signed permutations from…
We construct a new operation among representations of the symmetric group that interpolates between the classical internal and external products, which are defined in terms of tensor product and induction of representations. Following Malvenuto and Reutenauer, we pass from symmetric functions to non-commutative symmetric functions and from there to the algebra of permutations in order to relate the internal and external products to the composition and convolution of linear endomorphisms of the tensor algebra. The new product we construct corresponds to the smash product of endomorphisms of the…
We introduce the Hopf algebra of uniform block permutations and show that it is self-dual, free, and cofree. These results are closely related to the fact that uniform block permutations form a factorizable inverse monoid. This Hopf algebra contains the Hopf algebra of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer and the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables of Gebhard, Rosas, and Sagan.
We construct three new combinatorial Hopf algebras based on the Loday-Ronco operations on planar binary trees. The first and second algebras are defined on planar trees and labeled planar trees extending the Loday-Ronco and Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebras respectively. We show that the latter is bidendriform which implies that is also free, cofree, and self-dual. The third algebra involves a new visualization of parking functions as decorated binary trees; it is also bidendriform, free, cofree, and self-dual, and therefore abstractly isomorphic to the algebra PQSym of Novelli and Thibon. We…
Consider the coradical filtrations of the Hopf algebras of planar binary trees of Loday and Ronco and of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer. We give explicit isomorphisms showing that the associated graded Hopf algebras are dual to the cocommutative Hopf algebras introduced in the late 1980's by Grossman and Larson. These Hopf algebras are constructed from ordered trees and heap-ordered trees, respectively. These results follow from the fact that whenever one starts from a Hopf algebra that is a cofree graded coalgebra, the associated graded Hopf algebra is a shuffle Hopf algebra.
In this paper we report on results of our investigation into the algebraic structure supported by the combinatorial geometry of the cyclohedron. Our new graded algebra structures lie between two well known Hopf algebras: the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra of permutations and the Loday-Ronco algebra of binary trees. Connecting algebra maps arise from a new generalization of the Tonks projection from the permutohedron to the associahedron, which we discover via the viewpoint of the graph associahedra of Carr and Devadoss. At the same time that viewpoint allows exciting geometrical insights into th…
If H is a connected, graded Hopf algebra, then Takeuchi's formula can be used to compute its antipode. However, there is usually massive cancellation in the result. We show how sign-reversing involutions can sometimes be used to obtain cancellation-free formulas. We apply this idea to nine different examples. We rederive known formulas for the antipodes in the Hopf algebra of polynomials, the shuffle Hopf algebra, the Hopf algebra of quasisymmertic functions in both the monomial and fundamental bases, the Hopf algebra of multi-quasisymmetric functions in the fundamental basis, and the incidenc…
The theory and structure of the Hopf algebra of surjections (known as WQSym, the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions) parallels largely the one of bijections (known as FQSym or MR, the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions or Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra). The study of surjections from a picture and double poset theoretic point of view, which is the subject of the present article, seems instead new. The article is organized as follows. We introduce first a family of double posets, weak planar posets, that generalize the planar posets and are in bijection with surjectio…
Dendriform structures arise naturally in algebraic combinatorics (where they allow, for example, the splitting of the shuffle product into two pieces) and through Rota-Baxter algebra structures (the latter appear, among others, in differential systems and in the renormalization process of pQFT). We prove new combinatorial identities in dendriform dialgebras that appear to be strongly related to classical phenomena, such as the combinatorics of Lyndon words, rewriting rules in Lie algebras, or the fine structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra. One of these identities is an abstract noncomm…
We exhibit an internal coproduct on the Hopf algebra of finite topologies recently defined by the second author, C. Malvenuto and F. Patras, dual to the composition of "quasi-ormoulds", which are the natural version of J. Ecalle's moulds in this setting. All these results are displayed in the linear species formalism.
We construct a Hopf algebra on integer binary relations that contains under the same roof several well-known Hopf algebras related to the permutahedra and the associahedra: the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra on permutations, the Loday-Ronco algebra on planar binary trees, and the Chapoton algebras on ordered partitions and on Schröder trees. We also derive from our construction new Hopf structures on intervals of the weak order on permutations and of the Tamari order on binary trees.
A combinatorial Hopf algebra is a graded connected Hopf algebra over a field $F$ equipped with a character (multiplicative linear functional) $ζ:H\to F$. We show that the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf algebras is the algebra $QSym$ of quasi-symmetric functions; this explains the ubiquity of quasi-symmetric functions as generating functions in combinatorics. We illustrate this with several examples. We prove that every character decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character. Correspondingly, every combinatorial Hopf algebra $(H,ζ)$ possesses …
These notes -- originating from a one-semester class by their second author at the University of Minnesota -- survey some of the most important Hopf algebras appearing in combinatorics. After introducing coalgebras, bialgebras and Hopf algebras in general, we study the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, including Zelevinsky's axiomatic characterization of it as a "positive self-adjoint Hopf algebra" and its application to the representation theory of symmetric and (briefly) finite general linear groups. The notes then continue with the quasisymmetric and the noncommutative symmetric function…
Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, Lam and Pylyavskyy studied six combinatorial Hopf algebras that can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. They described the bialgebra structure in all cases that were not yet known but left open the question of finding explicit formulas for the antipode maps. We give combinatorial formulas for the antipode map for the K-theoretic…
Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, we study six combinatorial Hopf algebras. These Hopf algebras can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the by now classical ``square'' of Hopf algebras consisting of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. In addition, we develop a theory of set-valued P-partitions and study three new families of symmetric functions which are weight generating functions of reverse plane partitions, weak set-va…
A family of permutations called 2-clumped permutations forms a basis for a sub-Hopf algebra of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. The 2-clumped permutations are in bijection with certain decompositions of a square into rectangles, called generic rectangulations. Thus, we can describe the Hopf algebra of 2-clumped permutations using generic rectangulations (we call this isomorphic Hopf algebra the Hopf algebra of generic rectangulations). In this paper, we describe the cover relations in a lattice of generic rectangulations that is a lattice quotient of the right weak order …
Loday and Ronco defined an interesting Hopf algebra structure on the linear span of the set of planar binary trees. They showed that the inclusion of the Hopf algebra of non-commutative symmetric functions in the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations factors through their Hopf algebra of trees, and these maps correspond to natural maps from the weak order on the symmetric group to the Tamari order on planar binary trees to the boolean algebra. We further study the structure of this Hopf algebra of trees using a new basis for it. We describe the product, coproduct, and antipode in t…
The multiplihedra {M_n} form a family of polytopes originating in the study of higher categories and homotopy theory. While the multiplihedra may be unfamiliar to the algebraic combinatorics community, it is nestled between two families of polytopes that certainly are not: the permutahedra {S_n} and associahedra {Y_n}. The maps between these families reveal several new Hopf structures on tree-like objects nestled between the Malvenuto-Reutenauer (MR) Hopf algebra of permutations and the Loday-Ronco (LR) Hopf algebra of planar binary trees. We begin their study here, constructing a module over …
In the last decennia two generalizations of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions have appeared and shown themselves important, the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions NSymm and the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions QSymm. It has also become clear that it is important to understand the noncommutative versions of such important structures as Symm the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions. Not least because the right noncommmutative versions are often more beautiful than the commutaive ones (not all cluttered up with counting coefficients). NSymm and QSymm are not truly the…
There is a very natural and well-behaved Hopf algebra morphism from quasisymmetric functions to peak algebra, which we call it Theta map. This paper focuses on generalizing the peak algebra by constructing generalized Theta maps for an arbitrary combinatorial Hopf algebra. The image of Theta maps lies in the odd Hopf subalgebras, so we present a strategy to find odd Hopf subalgebra of any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We also give a combinatorial description of a family of Theta maps for Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations $\operatorname{\mathsf{\mathfrak{S}Sym}}$ whose images are …
We construct a new bigraded Hopf algebra whose bases are indexed by square matrices with entries in the alphabet $\{0, 1, ..., k\}$, $k \geq 1$, without null rows or columns. This Hopf algebra generalizes the one of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer, the one of $k$-colored permutations of Novelli and Thibon, and the one of uniform block permutations of Aguiar and Orellana. We study the algebraic structure of our Hopf algebra and show, by exhibiting multiplicative bases, that it is free. We moreover show that it is self-dual and admits a bidendriform bialgebra structure. Besides, as a Ho…
A general lattice theoretic construction of Reading constructs Hopf subalgebras of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra (MR) of permutations. The products and coproducts of these Hopf subalgebras are defined extrinsically in terms of the embedding in MR. The goal of this paper is to find an intrinsic combinatorial description of a particular one of these Hopf subalgebras. This Hopf algebra has a natural basis given by permutations that we call Pell permutations. The Pell permutations are in bijection with combinatorial objects that we call sashes, that is, tilings of a 1 by n rectangle with t…
Monotone triangles are a rich extension of permutations that biject with alternating sign matrices. The notions of weak order and descent sets for permutations are generalized here to monotone triangles, and shown to enjoy many analogous properties. It is shown that any linear extension of the weak order gives rise to a shelling order on a poset, recently introduced by Terwilliger, whose maximal chains biject with monotone triangles; among these shellings are a family of EL-shellings. The weak order turns out to encode an action of the 0-Hecke monoid of type A on the monotone triangles, genera…
A function on the state space of a Markov chain is a "lumping" if observing only the function values gives a Markov chain. We give very general conditions for lumpings of a large class of algebraically-defined Markov chains, which include random walks on groups and other common constructions. We specialise these criteria to the case of descent operator chains from combinatorial Hopf algebras, and, as an example, construct a "top-to-random-with-standardisation" chain on permutations that lumps to a popular restriction-then-induction chain on partitions, using the fact that the algebra of symmet…
For $G$ a finite abelian group, we study the properties of general equivalence relations on $G_n=G^n\rtimes \SG_n$, the wreath product of $G$ with the symmetric group $\SG_n$, also known as the $G$-coloured symmetric group. We show that under certain conditions, some equivalence relations give rise to subalgebras of $\k G_n$ as well as graded connected Hopf subalgebras of $\bigoplus_{n\ge o} \k G_n$. In particular we construct a $G$-coloured peak subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra (or $G$-coloured descent algebra). We show that the direct sum of the $G$-coloured peak algebras is a Ho…
We construct a non-commutative, non-cocommutative, graded bialgebra $\mathbfΠ$ with a basis indexed by the permutations in all finite symmetric groups. Unlike the formally similar Malvenuto-Poirier-Reutenauer Hopf algebra, this bialgebra does not have finite graded dimension. After giving formulas for the product and coproduct, we show that there is a natural morphism from $\mathbfΠ$ to the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions, under which the image of a permutation is its associated Stanley symmetric function. As an application, we use this morphism to derive some new enumerative identities. …
The character theory of symmetric groups, and the theory of symmetric functions, both make use of the combinatorics of Young tableaux, such as the Robinson-Schensted algorithm, Schuetzenberger's "jeu de taquin", and evacuation. In 1995 Poirier and the second author introduced some algebraic structures, different from the plactic monoid, which induce some products and coproducts of tableaux, with homomorphisms. Their starting point are the two dual Hopf algebras of permutations, introduced by the authors in 1995. In 2006 Aguiar and Sottile studied in more detail the Hopf algebra of permutations…
In the 1995 paper entitled "Noncommutative symmetric functions," Gelfand, et. al. defined two noncommutative symmetric function analogues for the power sum basis of the symmetric functions, along with analogues for the elementary and the homogeneous bases. They did not consider the noncommutative symmetric power sum duals in the quasisymmetric functions, which have since been explored only in passing by Derksen and Malvenuto-Reutenauer. These two distinct quasisymmetric power sum bases are the topic of this paper. In contrast to the simplicity of the symmetric power sums, or the other well kno…
This thesis introduces a way to build Markov chains out of Hopf algebras. The transition matrix of a "Hopf-power Markov chain" is (the transpose of) the matrix of the coproduct-then-product operator on a combinatorial Hopf algebra with respect to a suitable basis. These chains describe the breaking-then-recombining of the combinatorial objects in the Hopf algebra. The motivating example is the famous Gilbert-Shannon-Reeds model of riffle-shuffling of a deck of cards, which arises in this manner from the shuffle algebra. The primary reason for constructing Hopf-power Markov chains, or for rephr…
We extend an algebra of Mantaci and Reutenauer, acting on the free associative algebra, to a vector space of operators acting on all graded connected Hopf algebras. These operators are convolution products of certain involutions, which we view as hyperoctahedral variants of Patras's descent operators. We obtain the eigenvalues and multiplicities of all our new operators, as well as a basis of eigenvectors for a subclass akin to Adams operations. We outline how to apply this eigendata to study Markov chains, and examine in detail the case of card-shuffles with flips or rotations.
Recently a new basis for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions $QSym$, called quasisymmetric Schur functions, has been introduced by Haglund, Luoto, Mason, van Willigenburg. In this paper we extend the definition of quasisymmetric Schur functions to introduce skew quasisymmetric Schur functions. These functions include both classical skew Schur functions and quasisymmetric Schur functions as examples, and give rise to a new poset $\mathcal{L}_C$ that is analogous to Young's lattice. We also introduce a new basis for the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions $NSym$. This bas…
