Let D be a bounded domain in the complex plane whose boundary consists of finitely many pairwise disjoint simple closed curves. Give bD the standard orientation and let A(D) be the algebra of all continuous functions on the closure of D which are holomorphic on D. In the paper we prove that a continuous function f on bD extends to a function in A(D) if and only if for each g in A(D) such that f+g has no zero on bD the change of argument of f+g along bD is nonnegative.
We construct an example of a holomorphic motion of a five-point subset of the Riemann sphere over an annulus such that it satisfies the zero winding number condition but is not fully extendable.
Let M be a finite Riemann surface and let A(bM) be the algebra of all continuous functions on bM which extend holomorphically through M. We prove that a continuous function F on bM belongs to A(bM) if for each f, g in A(bM) such that fF+g has no zero the change of argument of fF+g along bM is nonnegative.
Let D be a bounded, finitely connected domain in the complex plane without isolated points in the boundary and let f be a continuous function on the boundary bD. Let F be a continuous extension of f to the closure of D. We prove that f extends holomorphically through D if and only if the degree of F+h is nonnegative for every holomorphic function h on D such that F+h is bounded away from zero near bD.
Let D be a bounded domain in the complex plane whose boundary consists of m pairwise disjoint simple closed curves where m is greater than one. Let A(bD) be the algebra of all continuous functions on bD which extend holomorphically through D. We show that a continuous function f on bD belongs to A(bD) if for each g in A(bD) the harmonic extension of Re(fg) to D has a single valued conjugate.
The paper gives the following characterization of the disc algebra in terms of the argument principle: A continuous function f on the unit circle T extends holomorphically through the unit disc if and only if for each polynomial P such that f+P has no zero on T the change of argument of f+P around T is nonnegative.
Let B be the open unit ball in C^2 and let a, b be two points in B. It is known that for every positive integer k there is a function f in C^k(bB) which extends holomorphically into B along any complex line passing through either a or b yet f does not extend holomorphically through B. In the paper we show that there is no such function in C^\infty (bB). Moreover, we obtain a fairly complete description of pairs of points a, b in C^2 such that if a function f in C^\infty(bB) extends holomorphically into B along each complex line passing through either a or b that meets B, then f extends holomor…
Let M be a smooth generic submanifold of C^n. Tumanov showed that the direction of CR extendability parallel propagates with respect to a certain differential geometric partial connection in a quotient bundle of the normal bundle to M. M is said to be globally minimal at a point z in M if the CR orbit of z contains a neighborhood of z in M. It is shown that the vector space generated by the directions of CR-extendability of CR functions on M is preserved by the induced composed flow between two points in the same CR orbit. As an application, the main result of this paper, conjectured by J.-M. …
Let D be a bounded domain in the complex plane whose boundary bD consists of finitely many pairwise disjoint real analytic simple closed curves. Let f be an integrable function on bD. In the paper we show how to compute the candidates for poles of a meromorphic extension of f through D and thus reduce the question of meromorphic extendibility to the question of holomorphic extendibility. Let A(D) be the algebra of all continuous functions on the closure of D which are holomorphic on D. For continuous functions f on bD we obtain a characterization of meromorphic extendibility in terms of the ar…
Since the nonlinear integral transforms $J_α[f](z) = \int_{0}^{z}(f'(u))^α du$ and $I_α[f](z) =\int_0^z (f(u)/u)^α du$ with a complex number $α$ have been introduced, a great number of studies were dedicated to deriving sufficient conditions for univalence on the unit disk. On the other hand, little is known about the conditions that $J_α[f]$ or $I_α[f]$ produces a holomorphic univalent function in the unit disk which extends to a quasiconformal map on the complex plane. In this paper we discuss quasiconformal extendibility of the integral transforms $J_α[f]$ and $I_α[f]$ for holomorphic funct…
Let U be the open unit disc in C. Given a continuous function g: bU --> C-{0} denote by W(g) the winding number of g around the origin. We prove that a continuous function f: bU --> C extends meromorphically through U if and only if there is a nonnegative integer N such that W(Pf+Q) is greater than or equal to -N for every pair P,Q of polynomials such that Pf+Q has no zero on bU. If this is the case then the meromorphic extension of f has at most N poles in U, counting multiplicity.
Let D be the open unit disc in C. The paper deals with the following conjecture: If f is a continuous function on bD such that the change of argument of Pf+1 around bD is nonnegative for every polynomial P such that Pf+1 has no zero on bD then f extends holomorphically through D. We prove a related result on meromorphic extendibility for smooth functions with finitely many zeros of finite order, which, in particular, implies that the conjecture holds for real analytic functions.
In $\C^2=\R^2+i\R^2$ with coordinates $z=(z_1,z_2), z=x+iy$, we consider a function $f$ continuous on a domain $Ω$ of $\R^2$ separately real analytic in $x_1$ and CR extendible to $y_2$ (resp. CR extendible to $y_2>0$). This means that $f(\cdot,x_2)$ extends holomorphically for $|y_1|<ε_{x_2}$ and $f(x_1,\cdot)$ for $| y_2|<ε$ (resp. $0\leq y_2<ε$ continuous up to $y_2=0$) with $ε$ independent of $x_1$. We prove in Theorem 3.4 that $f$ is then real analytic (resp. in Theorem 3.5 that it extends holomorphically to a "wedge" $W= Ω+iΓ_ε$ where $Γ_ε$ is an open cone trumcated by $|y|<ε$ and contai…
We study the holomorphic extendibility of $\text{Op}(p)u$, when $p$ is an analytic symbol, and explicit information is available on the domains of holomorphic extendibility of both $p$ and $u$. By a contour deformation argument, we obtain a precise local estimate of the domain of holomorphy of $\text{Op}(p)u$ in terms of the information on $p$ and $u$.
Real analytic functions on the boundary of the sphere which have separate holomorphic extension along the complex lines through a boundary point have holomorphic extension to the ball. This was proved in a previous preprint by an argument of CR geometry. We give here an elementary proof based on the expansion in holomorphic and antiholomorphic powers.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth real analytic submanifold of a complex manifold $X$. We establish and study the link between the following 3 subjects: 1) topological properties of smooth families of attached analytic discs, the manifold $Ω$ admits, 2) lower bounds for dimensions of complex tangent spaces of $Ω$, 3) a generalization of the argument principle for smooth families of holomorphic mappings from the standard complex disc to $X$. In particular, we obtain characterization of complex manifolds and their boundaries in terms of attached analytic discs. The special case when $Ω$ is the graph, leads to…
In this paper, we generalize a recent work of Liu et al. from the open unit ball $\mathbb B^n$ to more general bounded strongly pseudoconvex domains with $C^2$ boundary. It turns out that part of the main result in this paper is in some certain sense just a part of results in a work of Bracci and Zaitsev. However, the proofs are significantly different: the argument in this paper involves a simple growth estimate for the Carathéodory metric near the boundary of $C^2$ domains and the well-known Graham's estimate on the boundary behavior of the Carathéodory metric on strongly pseudoconvex domain…
We prove that a proper holomorphic map between two bounded symmetric domains of the same dimension, one of them being irreducible, is a biholomorphism. Our methods allow us to give a single, all-encompassing argument that unifies the various special cases in which this result is known. We discuss an application of these methods to domains having noncompact automorphism groups that are not assumed to act transitively.
It is known that the Cauchy's argument principle, applied to an holomorphic function $f$, requires that $f$ has no zeros on the curve of integration. In this short note, we give a generalization of such a principle which covers the case when $f$ has zeros on the curve, as well as an application.
A version of the argument principle is established for varieties of holomorphic mappings from the unit disc to $\mathbb C^n,$ parametrized by points of real manifolds. Applications to characterization of CR functions and estimating CR dimensions of real submanifolds in $\mathbb C^n$ are given.
The purpose of this note is to show that the di-bar-estimate which is needed in the Ohsawa-Takegoshi Extension Theorem [6] is a direct consequence of the Hormander-Kohn-Morrey weigthed inequality. In this inequality, the Donnelly-Fefferman argument is not required and a single 1-parameter family of non-singular weights is used. This paper is the furtherst step of a great deal of work devoted to the simplification of the original proof of Ohsawa-Takegoshi Theorem, among other papers on the subject, we mention [1] and [8] which are based on "twisted" basic estimates and, in recent time, [3] and …
Kalantari's Geometric Modulus Principle describes the local behavior of the modulus of a polynomial. Specifically, if $p(z) = a_0 + \sum_{j=k}^n a_j\left(z-z_0\right)^j,\;a_0a_ka_n \neq 0$, then the complex plane near $z = z_0$ comprises $2k$ sectors of angle $\fracπ{k}$, alternating between arguments of ascent (angles $θ$ where $|p(z_0 + te^{iθ})| > |p(z_0)|$ for small $t$) and arguments of descent (where the opposite inequality holds). In this paper, we generalize the Geometric Modulus Principle to holomorphic and harmonic functions. As in Kalantari's original paper, we use these extensions …
Let $\mathcal F$ be a holomorphic foliation on a compact Káhler surface with hyperbolic singularities and no foliation cycle. We prove that if the limit set of $\mathcal F$ has zero Lebesgue measure, then its complement is a modification of a Stein domain. The proof consists in building, in several steps, a metric of positive curvature for the normal bundle of $\mathcal F$ near the limit set. Then we construct a proper strictly plurisubharmonic exhaustion function for the complement of the limit set, by adapting Brunella's ideas to our singular context. The arguments hold more generally when t…
Given linearly independent holomorphic functions $f_0,...,f_n$ on a planar domain $Ω$, let $\mathcal E$ be the set of those points $z\inΩ$ where a nontrivial linear combination $\sum_{j=0}^nλ_jf_j$ may have a zero of multiplicity greater than $n$, once the coefficients $λ_j=λ_j(z)$ are chosen appropriately. An elementary argument involving the Wronskian $W$ of the $f_j$'s shows that $\mathcal E$ is a discrete subset of $Ω$ (and is actually the zero set of $W$); thus "deep" zeros are rare. We elaborate on this by studying similar phenomena in various function spaces on the unit disk, with more …
The paper proposes a vector generalization of the basic concepts of the theory of complex variable: the concept of modulus and argument of complex number. The author introduces some generalizations of the notion of holomorphic functions and mappings to the case of infinite-dimensional complex spaces. This approach allows us to generalize several well-known results of geometric function theory to the case of infinite-dimensional complex spaces. In particular, the author summarizes a number of known theorems on the theory of functions of class S on infinite-dimensional complex space.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded, convex domain in a separable Hilbert space. The authors prove a version of the theorem of Bun Wong, which asserts that if such a domain admits an automorphism orbit accumulating at a strongly pseudoconvex boundary point then it is biholomorphic to the ball. Key ingredients in the proof are a new localization argument using holomorphic peaking functions and the use of new ``normal families'' arguments in the construction of the limit biholomorphism.
We describe the basic cohomology ring of the canonical holomorphic foliation on a moment-angle manifold, LVMB-manifold or any complex manifold with a maximal holomorphic torus action. Namely, we show that the basic cohomology has a description similar to the cohomology ring of a complete simplicial toric variety due to Danilov and Jurkiewicz. This settles a question of Battaglia and Zaffran, who previously computed the basic Betti numbers for the canonical holomorphic foliation in the case of a shellable fan. Our proof uses an Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence argument; the key ingredient is t…
Denote by $B_n$ the set of complex square matrices of order $n$, whose Euclidean operator norms are $<1$. Its Shilov boundary is the set $U(n)$ of all unitary matrices. A holomorphic map $B_m\to B_n$ is inner if it sends $U(m)$ to $U(n)$. On the other hand we consider a group $U(n+mj)$ and its subgroup $U(j)$ embedded to $U(n+mj)$ in a block-diagonal way ($m$ blocks $U(j)$ and a unit block of size $n$). For any conjugacy class of $U(n+mj)$ with respect to $U(j)$ we assign a 'characteristic function', which is a rational inner map $B_m\to B_n$. We show that the class of inner functions, which c…
In this note we show that on any compact subdomain of a Kähler manifold that admits sufficiently many global holomorphic functions, the products of harmonic functions form a complete set. This gives a positive answer to the linearized anisotropic Calderón problem on a class of complex manifolds that includes compact subdomains of Stein manifolds and sufficiently small subdomains of Kähler manifolds. Some of these manifolds do not admit limiting Carleman weights, and thus cannot by treated by standard methods for the Calderón problem in higher dimensions. The argument is based on constructing M…
This paper deals with proper holomorphic self-maps of smoothly bounded pseudoconvex domains in $\C^2$. We study the dynamical properties of their extension to the boundary and show that their non-wandering sets are always contained in the weakly pseudoconvex part of the boundary. In the case of complete circular domains, we combine this fact with an entropy/degree argument to show that the maps are automorphisms. Some of our results remain true in $\C^n$.
We utilize Cauchy's argument principle in combination with the Jacobian of a holomorphic function in several complex variables and the first moment of a ratio of two correlated complex normal random variables to prove explicit formulas for the density and the mean distribution of complex zeros of random polynomials spanned by orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and on the unit disk. We then inquire into the consequences of their asymptotical evaluations.
