This is a review article on the combinatorial aspects of the mixed Hodge structure of a Milnor fibre of the isolated hypersurface singularity. We give a purely combinatorial method to compute spectral pairs of the singularity under the assumption of simplicial Newton boundary and non-degeneracy of the germ.

Why do natural and interesting sequences often turn out to be log-concave? We give one of many possible explanations, from the viewpoint of "standard conjectures". We illustrate with several examples from combinatorics.

We introduce the notion of mixed Hodge complex on an algebraic variety, improving Du Bois' filtered complex, and relate Deligne's theory of mixed Hodge structure with the theory of mixed Hodge module. In this paper, we show that the mixed Hodge structures of character varieties are of Hodge--Tate type and that the mixed Hodge polynomials are independent of the choice of generic eigenvalues, which is a conjecture due to Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Moreover, we investigate the mixed Hodge structures of the moduli space of semistable parabolic Higgs bundles and the moduli space of semistable regular singular parabolic connections. This note is inspired by the work of Deligne on the local behavior of Hodge structures at infinity. We study limit mixed Hodge structures of degenerating families of compact hyperkähler manifolds. We show that when the monodromy action on $H^2$ has maximal index of unipotency, the limit mixed Hodge structures on all cohomology groups are of Hodge-Tate type.

Most notably, we introduce a mixed Hodge structure for a pair of higher cycles which are in the refined normalized complex and intersect properly. We show that the category of mixed Hodge complexes admits a Cartan-Eilenberg structure, a notion introduced in [GNPR10] leading to a good calculation of the homotopy category in terms of (co)fibrant objects. This result provides a conceptual framework from which Beilinson's [Bei86] and Carlson's [Car80] results on mixed Hodge complexes and extensions of mixed Hodge structures follow easily.
