We prove a substantial part of a conjecture of Kontsevich and Zorich on the Lyapunov exponents of the Teichmuller geodesic flow on the deviation of ergodic averages for generic conservative flows on higher genus surfaces. The result on the Teichmuller flow is formulated in terms of a (symplectic) cocycle on the real cohomology bundle over the moduli space of holomorphic differentials introduced by Kontsevich and Zorich. We prove that such a cocycle is non-uniformly hyperbolic, that is, all of its Lyapunov exponents are different from zero. In particular, the number of strictly positive exponents is equal to the genus of the surface. From this theorem we derive that ergodic integrals of smooth functions for generic area-preserving flows on higher genus surfaces grow with time according to a power-law asymptotics with a number of terms equal to the genus of the surface and stricltly positive exponents equal to the non-negative Lyapunov exponents of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle. In particular, for conservative flows on surfaces of higher genus, the deviation of ergodic averages for a generic smooth function obeys a power law with a strictly positive exponent and, consequently, the Denjoy-Koksma inequality does not hold. The derivation of the deviation theorem relies in a fundamental way on the notion of invariant distribution for flows on surfaces and the related notion of basic current for the orbit foliation.
We show that the horocyclic flow of an orientable compact higher genus surface without conjugate points and with continuous Green bundles is uniquely ergodic. The result applies to nonflat nonpositively curved surfaces and generalizes a classical result of Furstenberg and Marcus in negative curvature. The proof relies on the definition of a uniformly expanding parametrization on the quotient by the strips of the surface.
A point is called generic for a flow preserving an infinite ergodic invariant Radon measure, if its orbit satisfies the conclusion of the ratio ergodic theorem for every pair of continuous functions with compact support and non-zero integrals. The generic points for horocycle flows on hyperbolic surfaces of finite genus are understood, but there are no results in infinite genus. We give such a result, by characterizing the generic points for $\Z^d$--covers.
It is well-known that on any Veech surface, the dynamics in any minimal direction is uniquely ergodic. In this paper it is shown that for any genus 2 translation surface which is not a Veech surface there are uncountably many minimal but not uniquely ergodic directions.

We show that for a closed surface of genus at least 5, or a surface of genus at least 2 with at least one marked point, the set of uniquely ergodic foliations and the set of cobounded foliations is path-connected and locally path-connected.
We prove that the ergodic deviation of a degenerate $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ relative to a symmetric, strictly convex body can be decomposed into two parts, and that each part admits a limit distribution after choosing a suitable normalizer. Specifically, the first part is similar to an ergodic sum of smooth observables after being normalized by $N$, and the second part is similar to the case of a random toral translation, i.e., the $\mathbb{Z}$-action, but with a normalizer of $N^{\frac{1}{2}}$. The key difference is that we employ the product flow on the product spac…
We prove polynomial upper bounds for the deviation of ergodic averages for the straight line flow on every translation surface in almost every direction, in particular for those surfaces arising from rational polygonal billiards.
We analyze the rel leaf of the Arnoux-Yoccoz translation surface in genus 3. We show that the leaf is dense in the stratum $\mathcal{H}(2,2)^{\mathrm{odd}}$ but that the real-rel trajectory of the surface is divergent. On this real-rel trajectory, the vertical foliation of one surface is invariant under a pseudo-Anosov map (and in particular is uniquely ergodic), but the vertical foliations on all other surfaces are completely periodic.
Deviation of ergodic sums is studied for substitution dynamical systems with a matrix that admits eigenvalues of modulus 1. We consider the corresponding eigenfunctions, and in Theorem 1.1 we prove that the limit inferior of the ergodic sums is bounded for every point in the phase space. In Theorem 1.2, we prove existence of limit distributions along certain exponential subsequences of times for substitutions of constant length. Under additional assumptions, we prove that ergodic integrals satisfy the Central Limit Theorem (Theorem 1.3, Theorem 1.9).
Let $M$ be a smooth compact surface of nonpositive curvature, with genus $\geq 2$. We prove the ergodicity of the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of $M$ with respect to the Liouville measure under the condition that the set of points with negative curvature on $M$ has finitely many connected components. Under the same condition, we prove that a non closed "flat" geodesic doesn't exist, and moreover, there are at most finitely many flat strips, and at most finitely many isolated closed "flat" geodesics.
We survey some recent advances in the study of (area-preserving) flows on surfaces, in particular on the typical dynamical, ergodic and spectral properties of smooth area-preserving (or locally Hamiltonian) flows, as well as recent breakthroughs on linearization and rigidity questions in higher genus. We focus in particular on the Diophantine-like conditions which are required to prove such results, which can be thought of as a generalization of arithmetic conditions for flows on tori and circle diffeomorphisms. We will explain how these conditions on higher genus flows and their Poincare' sec…
We study the Kronecker sequence $\{nα\}_{n\leq N}$ on the torus ${\mathbb T}^d$ when $α$ is uniformly distributed on ${\mathbb T}^d.$ We show that the discrepancy of the number of visits of this sequence to a random box, normalized by $\ln^d N$, converges as $N\to\infty$ to a Cauchy distribution. The key ingredient of the proof is a Poisson limit theorem for the Cartan action on the space of $d+1$ dimensional lattices.
We establish some new existence results for global surfaces of section of dynamically convex Reeb flows on the three-sphere. These sections often have genus, and are the result of a combination of pseudo-holomorphic curve methods with some elementary ergodic methods.
Given a flow on a 3-dimensional integral homology sphere, we give a formula for the Euler characteristic of its transverse surfaces, in terms of boundary data only. We illustrate the formula with several examples, in particular with surfaces of low genus. As an application, we show that for a right-handed flow with an ergodic invariant measure, the genus is an asymptotic invariant of order 2 proportional to the helicity.
We give a criterion which allows to prove non-ergodicity for certain infinite periodic billiards and directional flows on Z-periodic translation surfaces. Our criterion applies in particular to a billiard in an infinite band with periodically spaced vertical barriers and to the Ehrenfest wind-tree model, which is a planar billiard with a $Z^2$-periodic array of rectangular obstacles. We prove that, in these two examples, both for a full measure set of parameters of the billiard tables and for tables with rational parameters, for almost every direction the corresponding billiard flow is not erg…
In this paper, we introduce the concepts of the large deviations theorem of weaker types, i.e., type I, type I', type II, type II', type III, and type III', and present a systematic study of the ergodic and chaotic properties of dynamical systems satisfying the large eviations theorem of various types. Some characteristics of the ergodic measure are obtained and then applied to prove that every dynamical system satisfying the large deviations theorem of type I' is ergodic, which is equivalent to the large deviations theorem of type II' in this regard, and that every uniquely ergodic dynamical …
In this article, we study the ergodicity of the geodesic flows on surfaces with no focal points. Let $M$ be a smooth connected and closed surface equipped with a $C^\infty$ Riemannian metric $g$, whose genus $\mathfrak{g} \geq 2$. Suppose that $(M,g)$ has no focal points. We prove that the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of $M$ is ergodic with respect to the Liouville measure, under the assumption that the set of points on $M$ with negative curvature has at most finitely many connected components.
We show that the ergodic averages for the horocycle flow on the two-torus associated by Giulietti and Liverani to an Anosov diffeomorphism either grow linearly or are bounded, in other words there are no deviations. For this, we use topological invariance of the Artin-Mazur zeta function to exclude resonances outside of the open unit disc. Transfer operators acting on suitable spaces of anisotropic distributions and their Ruelle determinants are the key tools in the proof. As a bonus, we show that for any smooth Anosov diffeomorphism F on the two-torus, the correlations for the measure of maxi…
We show the existence of a limiting distribution $\cD_\cC$ of the adequately normalized discrepancy function of a random translation on a torus relative to a strictly convex set $\cC$. Using a correspondence between the small divisors in the Fourier series of the discrepancy function and lattices with short vectors, and mixing of diagonal flows on the space of lattices, we identify $\cD_\cC$ with the distribution of the level sets of a function defined on the product of the space of lattices with an infinite dimensional torus. We apply our results to counting lattice points in slanted cylinder…
At the beggining of the 80's, H.Masur and W.Veech started the study of generic properties of interval exchange transformations proving that almost every such transformation is uniquely ergodic. About the same time, S.Novikov's school and French mathematicians independently discovered very intriguing phenomena for classes of measured foliations on surfaces and respective IETs. For instance, minimality is exceptional in these families. A precise version of this statement is a conjecture by Novikov. The French and Russian constructions are very different ones. Nevertheless, in the most simple sit…
We study the action of the horocycle flow on the moduli space of abelian differentials in genus two. In particular, we exhibit a classification of a specific class of probability measures that are invariant and ergodic under the horocycle flow on the stratum H(1,1).
We consider a non-uniquely ergodic dynamical system given by a $\mathbb{Z}^{l}$-action (or $(\N\cup\{0\})^l$-action) $τ$ on a non-empty compact metrisable space $Ω$, for some $l\in\N$. Let (D) denote the following property: The graph of the restriction of the entropy map $h^τ$ to the set of ergodic states is dense in the graph of $h^τ$. We assume that $h^τ$ is finite and upper semi-continuous. We give several criteria in order that (D) holds, each of which is stated in terms of a basic notion: Gateaux differentiability of the pressure map $P^τ$ on some sets dense in the space $C(Ω)$ of real-va…
Ten years ago A. Zorich discovered, by computer experiments on interval exchange transformations, some striking new power laws for the ergodic integrals of generic non-exact Hamiltonian flows on higher genus surfaces. In Zorich's later work and in a joint paper authored by M. Kontsevich, Zorich and Kontsevich were able to explain conjecturally most of Zorich's discoveries by relating them to the ergodic theory of Teichmüller flows on moduli spaces of Abelian differentials. In this article, we outline a generalization of the Kontsevich-Zorich framework to a class of `renormalizable' flows on `p…
In her thesis, Mirzakhani showed that the number of simple closed geodesics of length $\leq L$ on a closed, connected, oriented hyperbolic surface $X$ of genus $g$ is asymptotic to $L^{6g-6}$ times a constant depending on the geometry of $X$. In this survey we give a detailed account of Mirzakhani's proof of this result aimed at non-experts. We draw inspiration from classic primitive lattice point counting results in homogeneous dynamics. The focus is on understanding how the general principles that drive the proof in the case of lattices also apply in the setting of hyperbolic surfaces.
We prove quantitative recurrence and large deviations results for the Teichmuller geodesci flow on a connected component of a stratum of the moduli space $Q_g$ of holomorphic unit-area quadratic differentials on a compact genus $g \geq 2$ surface.
We study the variance of a linear statistic of the Laplace eigenvalues on a hyperbolic surface, when the surface varies over the moduli space of all surfaces of fixed genus, sampled at random according to the Weil-Petersson measure. The ensemble variance of the linear statistic was recently shown to coincide with that of the corresponding statistic in the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) of random matrix theory, in the double limit of first taking large genus and then shrinking size of the energy window. In this note we show that in this same limit, the energy variance for a typical surface …
The ergodic properties of two uncoupled oscillators, a horizontal and vertical one, residing in a class of non rectangular star-shaped polygons with only vertical and horizontal boundaries and impacting elastically from its boundaries are studied. We prove that the iso-energy level sets topology changes non-trivially; the flow on level sets is always conjugated to a translation flow on a translation surface, yet, for some segments of partial energies the genus of the surface is strictly larger than one. When at least one of the oscillators is un-harmonic, or when both are harmonic and non-reso…
In closed string vacua, ergodicity of unipotent flows provide a key for relating vacuum stability to the UV behavior of spectra and interactions. Infrared finiteness at all genera in perturbation theory can be rephrased in terms of cancelations involving only tree-level closed strings scattering amplitudes. This provides quantitative results on the allowed deviations from supersymmetry on perturbative stable vacua. From a mathematical perspective, diagrammatic relations involving closed string amplitudes suggest a relevance of unipotent flows dynamics for the Schottky problem and for the const…
For sequences of non-lattice weakly dependent random variables, we obtain asymptotic expansions for Large Deviation Principles. These expansions, commonly referred to as strong large deviation results, are in the spirit of Edgeworth Expansions for the Central Limit Theorem. We apply our results to show that Diophantine iid sequences, finite state Markov chains, strongly ergodic Markov chains and Birkhoff sums of smooth expanding maps & subshifts of finite type satisfy these strong large deviation results.
The entropy of an ergodic finite-alphabet process can be computed from a single typical sample path x_1^n using the entropy of the k-block empirical probability and letting k grow with $n$ roughly like log n. We further assume that the distribution of the process is a g-measure; g-measures form a large class of Gibbs measures. We prove large deviation principles for conditional, non-conditional and relative k(n)-block empirical entropies.
Given a sequence of curves on a surface, we provide conditions which ensure that (1) the sequence is an infinite quasi-geodesic in the curve complex, (2) the limit in the Gromov boundary is represented by a nonuniquely ergodic ending lamination, and (3) the sequence divides into a finite set of subsequences, each of which projectively converges to one of the ergodic measures on the ending lamination. The conditions are sufficiently robust, allowing us to construct sequences on a closed surface of genus $g$ for which the space of measures has the maximal dimension $3g-3$, for example. We also s…
The aim of this paper is to obtain an asymptotic expansion for ergodic integrals of translation flows on flat surfaces of higher genus (Theorem 1) and to give a limit theorem for these flows (Theorem 2).
We consider volume-preserving flows $(Φ^f_t)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ on $S\times \mathbb{R}$, where $S$ is a closed connected surface of genus $g\geq 2$ and $(Φ^f_t)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ has the form $Φ^f_t(x,y)=(ϕ_tx,y+\int_0^t f(ϕ_sx)ds)$, where $(ϕ_t)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ is a locally Hamiltonian flow of hyperbolic periodic type on $S$ and $f$ is a smooth real valued function on $S$. We investigate ergodic properties of these infinite measure-preserving flows and prove that if $f$ belongs to a space of finite codimension in $\mathscr{C}^{2+ε}(S)$, then the following dynamical dichotomy holds: if there …
Let $S = S_g$ be a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$ and $Mod(S)$ be the mapping class group of $S$. In this paper, we show that the boundary representation of $Mod(S)$ is ergodic using statistical hyperbolicity, which generalizes the classical result of Masur on ergodicity of the action of $Mod(S)$ on the projective measured foliation space $\mathcal{PMF}(S).$ As a corollary, we show that the boundary representation of $Mod(S)$ is irreducible.
We consider smooth locally Hamiltonian flows on compact surfaces of genus $g\geq 2$ to prove their deviation of Birkhoff integrals for smooth observables. Our work generalizes results of Forni and Bufetov which prove the existence of deviation spectrum of Birkhoff integrals for observables whose jets vanish at sufficiently high order around fixed points of the flow. They showed that ergodic integrals can display a power spectrum of behaviours with exactly $g$ positive exponents related to the positive Lyapunov exponents of the cocycle so-called Kontsevich-Zorich, a renormalization cocycle over…
