At the beggining of the 80's, H.Masur and W.Veech started the study of generic properties of interval exchange transformations proving that almost every such transformation is uniquely ergodic. About the same time, S.Novikov's school and French mathematicians independently discovered very intriguing phenomena for classes of measured foliations on surfaces and respective IETs. For instance, minimality is exceptional in these families. A precise version of this statement is a conjecture by Novikov. The French and Russian constructions are very different ones. Nevertheless, in the most simple situation (surfaces of genus three with two singularities) it was recently observed that both foliations share the same type of properties. For instance, the space of minimal parameters is the same, called the Rauzy gasket. However, the precise connection between these two series of works was rather unclear. The aim of this paper is to prove that both theories describe in different languages the same objects. This text provides an explicit dictionary between both constructions.
In this paper, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the Rauzy gasket is less than 2. By this result, we answer a question addressed by Pierre Arnoux. Also, this question is a very particular case of the conjecture stated by S.P. Novikov and A. Ya. Maltsev in 2003.
The Rauzy gasket $R$ is the maximal invariant set of a certain renormalization procedure for special systems of isometries naturally appearing in the context of Novikov's problem in conductivity theory for monocrystals. It was conjectured by Novikov and Maltsev in 2003 that the Hausdorff dimension $\dim_{\mathrm{H}}(R)$ of Rauzy gasket is strictly comprised between $1$ and $2$. In 2016, Avila, Hubert and Skripchenko confirmed that $\dim_{\mathrm{H}}(R)<2$. In this note, we use some results by Cao--Pesin--Zhao in order to show that $\dim_{\mathrm{H}}(R)>1.19$.
Consider a periodic tiling of a plane by equal triangles obtained from the equilateral tiling by a linear transformation. We study a following tiling billiard: a ball follows straight segments and bounces of the boundaries of the tiles into neighbouring tiles in such a way that the coefficient of refraction is equal to -1. We show that almost all the trajectories of such a billiard are either closed or escape linearly, and for closed trajectories we prove that their periods belong to the set 4N+2. We also give a precise description of the exceptional family of trajectories (of zero measure) : …
In 1985, Boshernitzan showed that a minimal (sub)shift satisfying a linear block growth condition must have a bounded number of ergodic probability measures. Recently, this bound was shown to be sharp through examples constructed by Cyr and Kra. In this paper, we show that under the stronger assumption of eventually constant growth, an improved bound exists. To this end, we introduce special Rauzy graphs. Variants of the well-known Rauzy graphs from symbolic dynamics, these graphs provide an explicit description of how a Rauzy graph for words of length n relates to the one for words of length …
Thanks to works by M. Kontsevich and A. Zorich followed by C. Boissy, we have a classification of all Rauzy Classes of any given genus. It follows from these works that Rauzy Classes are closed under the operation of inverting the permutation. In this paper, we shall prove the existence of self-inverse permutations in every Rauzy Class by giving an explicit construction of such an element satisfying the sufficient conditions. We will also show that self-inverse permutations are Lagrangian, meaning any suspension has its vertical cycles span a Lagrangian subspace in homology. This will simplify…
Homogeneous continued fraction algorithms are multidimensional generalizations of the classical Euclidean algorithm, the dissipative map $$ (x_1,x_2) \in \mathbb{R}_+^2 \longmapsto \left\{\begin{array}{ll} (x_1 - x_2, x_2), & \mbox{if $x_1 \geq x_2$} (x_1, x_2 - x_1), & \mbox{otherwise.} \end{array} \right. $$ We focus on those which act piecewise linearly on finitely many copies of positive cones which we call Rauzy induction type algorithms. In particular, a variation Selmer algorithm belongs to this class. We prove that Rauzy induction type algorithms, as well as Selmer algorithms, are ergo…
We propose a new point of view on multidimensional continued fraction algorithms inspired by Rauzy induction. The generic behaviour of such an algorithm is described here as a random walk on a graph that we call simplicial system. These systems provide a family of examples for random walks with memory recorded by a finite dimensional vector. We introduce a general criterion on these graphs that induces ergodicity together with a bundle of many other dynamical properties. In particular, after computing the representation of Brun, Selmer and Arnoux-Rauzy-Poincare algorithm in this formalism, it …
The Arnoux-Rauzy systems are defined in \cite{ar}, both as symbolic systems on three letters and exchanges of six intervals on the circle. In connection with a conjecture of S.P. Novikov, we investigate the dynamical properties of the interval exchanges, and precise their relation with the symbolic systems, which was known only to be a semi-conjugacy; in order to do this, we define a new system which is an exchange of nine intervals on the line (it was described in \cite{abb} for a particular case). Our main result is that the semi-conjugacy determines a measure-theoretic isomorphism (between …
In this paper, we compare two definitions of Rauzy classes. The first one was introduced by Rauzy and was in particular used by Veech to prove the ergodicity of the Teichmüller flow. The second one is more recent and uses a "labeling" of the underlying intervals, and was used in the proof of some recent major results about the Teichmüller flow. The Rauzy diagrams obtained from the second definition are coverings of the initial ones. In this paper, we give a formula that gives the degree of this covering. This formula is related to moduli spaces of "framed" translation surfaces, which correspon…
We study chaotic plane sections of some particular family of triply periodic surfaces. The question about possible behavior of such sections was posed by S. P. Novikov. We prove some estimations on the diffusion rate of these sections using the connection between Novikov's problem and systems of isometries - some natural generalization of interval exchange transformations. Using thermodynamical formalism, we construct an invariant measure for systems of isometries of a special class called the Rauzy gasket, and investigate the main properties of the Lyapunov spectrum of the corresponding suspe…
This short survey is aimed at sketching the ergodic-theoretic aspects of the author's recent studies on Weyl's eigenvalue asymptotics for a \emph{"geometrically canonical" Laplacian} defined by the author on some self-conformal circle packing fractals including the classical \emph{Apollonian gasket}. The main result being surveyed is obtained by applying Kesten's renewal theorem [\emph{Ann.\ Probab.}\ \textbf{2} (1974), 355--386, Theorem 2] for functionals of Markov chains on general state spaces and provides an alternative probabilistic proof of the result by Oh and Shah [\emph{Invent.\ Math.…
We consider self-affine tiling substitutions in Euclidean space and the corresponding tiling dynamical systems. It is well-known that in the primitive case the dynamical system is uniquely ergodic. We investigate invariant measures when the substitution is not primitive, and the tiling dynamical system is non-minimal. We prove that all ergodic invariant probability measures are supported on minimal components, but there are other natural ergodic invariant measures, which are infinite. Under some mild assumptions, we completely characterize $σ$-finite invariant measures which are positive and f…
