Given a flow on a 3-dimensional integral homology sphere, we give a formula for the Euler characteristic of its transverse surfaces, in terms of boundary data only. We illustrate the formula with several examples, in particular with surfaces of low genus. As an application, we show that for a right-handed flow with an ergodic invariant measure, the genus is an asymptotic invariant of order 2 proportional to the helicity.

Homotopic rotation sets for higher genus surfaces

This paper states a definition of homotopic rotation set for higher genus surface homeomorphisms, as well as a collection of results that justify this definition. Quadratic centers defining elliptic surfaces

Let $X$ be a quadratic vector field with a center whose generic orbits are algebraic curves of genus one. To each $X$ we associate an elliptic surface (a smooth complex compact surface which is a genus one fibration). We give the list of all such vector fields and determine the corresponding elliptic surfaces.

Asymptotic link invariants for ergodic vector fields

We study the asymptotics of a family of link invariants on the orbits of a smooth volume-preserving ergodic vector field on a compact domain of the 3-space. These invariants, called linear saddle invariants, include many concordance invariants and generate an infinite-dimensional vector space of link invariants. In contrast, the vector space of asymptotic linear saddle invariants is 1-dimensional, generated by the asymptotic signature. We also relate the asymptotic slice genus to the asymptotic signature.

The topology and geometry of random square-tiled surfaces

A square-tiled surface (STS) is a branched cover of the standard square torus with branching over exactly one point. In this paper we consider a randomizing model for STSs and generalizations to branched covers of other simple translation surfaces which we call polygon-tiled surfaces. Functions of genus zero for which the fast escaping set has Hausdorff dimension two

We study a family of transcendental entire functions of genus zero, for which all of the zeros lie within a closed sector strictly smaller than a half-plane. In general these functions lie outside the Eremenko-Lyubich class. We show that for functions in this family the fast escaping set has Hausdorff dimension equal to two.

Inversely Unstable Solutions of Two-Dimensional Systems on Genus-p Surfaces and the Topology of Knotted Attractors

In this paper, we will show that a periodic nonlinear, time-varying dissipative system that is defined on a genus-p surface contains one or more invariant sets which act as attractors. Moreover, we shall generalize a result in [Martins, 2004] and give conditions under which these invariant sets are not homeomorphic to a circle individually, which implies the existence of chaotic behaviour. This is achieved by studying the appearance of inversely unstable solutions within each invariant set.
