A square-tiled surface (STS) is a branched cover of the standard square torus with branching over exactly one point. In this paper we consider a randomizing model for STSs and generalizations to branched covers of other simple translation surfaces which we call polygon-tiled surfaces. We obtain a local central limit theorem for the genus and subsequently obtain that the distribution of the genus is asymptotically normal. We also study holonomy vectors (Euclidean displacement vectors between cone points) on a random STS. We show that asymptotically almost surely the set of holonomy vectors of a random STS contains the set of primitive vectors of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ and with probability approaching $1/e$, these sets are equal.
Square-tiled surfaces are a class of translation surfaces that are of particular interest in geometry and dynamics because, as covers of the square torus, they share some of its simplicity and structure. In this paper, we study counting problems that result from focusing on properties of the square torus one by one. After drawing insights from experimental evidence, we consider the implications between these properties and their frequency in each stratum of translation surfaces.
We compute explicitly the absolute contribution of square-tiled surfaces having a single horizontal cylinder to the Masur-Veech volume of any ambient stratum of Abelian differentials. The resulting count is particularly simple and efficient in the large genus asymptotics. Using the recent results of Aggarwal and of Chen-Moeller-Zagier on the long-standing conjecture about the large genus asymptotics of Masur-Veech volumes, we derive that the relative contribution is asymptotically of the order 1/d, where d is the dimension of the stratum. Similarly, we evaluate the contribution of one-cylinder…
In every connected component of every stratum of Abelian differentials, we construct square-tiled surfaces with one vertical and one horizontal cylinder. We show that for all but the hyperelliptic components this can be achieved in the minimum number of squares necessary for a square-tiled surface in that stratum. For the hyperelliptic components, we show that the number of squares required is strictly greater and construct surfaces realising these bounds. Using these surfaces, we demonstrate that pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms optimising the ratio of Teichmüller to curve graph translation lengt…
We show that the number of square-tiled surfaces of genus $g$, with $n$ marked points, with one or both of its horizontal and vertical foliations belonging to fixed mapping class group orbits, and having at most $L$ squares, is asymptotic to $L^{6g-6+2n}$ times a product of constants appearing in Mirzakhani's count of simple closed hyperbolic geodesics. Many of the results in this paper reflect recent discoveries of Delecroix, Goujard, Zograf, and Zorich, but the approach considered here is very different from theirs. We follow conceptual and geometric methods inspired by Mirzakhani's work.
We prove that square-tiled surfaces having fixed combinatorics of horizontal cylinder decomposition and tiled with smaller and smaller squares become asymptotically equidistributed in any ambient linear $GL(\mathbb R)$-invariant suborbifold defined over $\mathbb Q$ in the moduli space of Abelian differentials. Moreover, we prove that the combinatorics of the horizontal and of the vertical decompositions are asymptotically uncorrelated. As a consequence, we prove the existence of an asymptotic distribution for the combinatorics of a "random" interval exchange transformation with integer lengths…
Square-tiled surfaces can be classified by their number of squares and their cylinder diagrams (also called realizable separatrix diagrams). For the case of $n$ squares and two cone points with angle $4 π$ each, we set up and parametrize the classification into four diagrams. Our main result is to provide formulae for enumeration of square-tiled surfaces in these four diagrams, completing the detailed count for genus two. The formulae are in terms of various well-studied arithmetic functions, enabling us to give asymptotics for each diagram using a new calculation for additive convolutions of …
A cyclic cover over the Riemann sphere branched at four points inherits a natural flat structure from the "pillow" flat structure on the basic sphere. We give an explicit formula for all individual Lyapunov exponents of the Hodge bundle over the corresponding arithmetic Teichmuller curve. The key technical element is evaluation of degrees of line subbundles of the Hodge bundle, corresponding to eigenspaces of the induced action of deck transformations.
The straight-line flow on almost every staircase and on almost every square tiled staircase is recurrent. For almost every square tiled staircase the set of periodic orbits is dense in the phase space.
We study the one parameter family of genus 2 Riemann surfaces defined by the orbit of the L-shaped translation surface tiled by three squares under the Teichmüller geodesic flow. These surfaces are real algebraic curves with three real components. We are interested in describing these surfaces by their period matrices. We show that the only Riemann surface in that family admitting a non-hyperelliptic automorphism comes from the 3-square-tiled translation surface itself. This makes the computation of an exact expression for period matrices of other Riemann surfaces in that family by the classic…
We introduce a family of reconfiguration puzzles arising from ideas in geometry and topology. We present their construction from square-tiled shapes, discuss some of the underlying mathematics and describe how they are naturally associated to puzzle spaces which can be explored through visualization.
The homology group of a tiling introduced by M. Reid is studied for certain topological tilings. As in the planar case, for finite square grids on topological surfaces, the method of homology groups, namely the non-triviality of some specific element in the group allows a `coloring proof' of impossibility of a tiling. Several results about the non-existence of polyomino tilings on certain square-tiled surfaces are proved in the paper.
We compute the Zariski closure of the Kontsevich-Zorich monodromy groups arising from certain square tiled surfaces that are geometrically motivated. Specifically we consider three surfaces that emerge as translation covers of platonic solids and quotients of infinite polyhedra, and show that the Zariski closure of the monodromy group arising from each surface is equal to a power of $\rm{SL}(2, \mathbb{R})$. We prove our results by finding generators for the monodromy groups, using a theorem of Matheus-Yoccoz-Zmiaikou that provides constraints on the Zariski closure of the groups (to obtain an…
We prove formulae for the countings by orbit of square-tiled surfaces of genus two with one singularity. These formulae were conjectured by Hubert & Lelièvre. We show that these countings admit quasimodular forms as generating functions.
In this century, a square-tiled translation surface (an origami) is intensively studied as an object with special properties of its translation structure and its $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit embedded in the moduli space. We generalize this concept in the language of flat surfaces appearing naturally in the Teichmüller theory. We study the combinatorial structure of origamis and show that a certain system of linear equations realizes the flat surface in which rectangles of specified moduli replace squares of an origami. This construction gives a parametrization of the family of flat surfaces with t…
Consider genus $g$ curves that admit degree $d$ covers to elliptic curves only branched at one point with a fixed ramification type. The locus of such covers forms a one parameter family $Y$ that naturally maps into the moduli space of stable genus $g$ curves $\bar{\mathcal M}_{g}$. We study the geometry of $Y$, and produce a combinatorial method by which to investigate its slope, irreducible components, genus and orbifold points. As a by-product of our approach, we find some equalities from classical number theory. Moreover, a correspondence between our method and the viewpoint of square-tile…
Let $S$ be an orientable surface with negative Euler characteristic. For $k \in \mathbb{N}$, let $\mathcal{C}_{k}(S)$ denote the $\textit{k-curve graph}$, whose vertices are isotopy classes of essential simple closed curves on $S$, and whose edges correspond to pairs of curves that can be realized to intersect at most $k$ times. The theme of this paper is that the geometry of Teichmüller space and of the mapping class group captures local combinatorial properties of $\mathcal{C}_{k}(S)$. Using techniques for measuring distance in Teichmüller space, we obtain upper bounds on the following three…
