We study the combinatorial geometry of a random closed multicurve on a surface of large genus and of a random square-tiled surface of large genus. We prove that primitive components of a random multicurve represent linearly independent homology cycles with asymptotic probability 1 and that it is primitive with asymptotic probability $\sqrt{2}/2$. We prove analogous properties for random square-tiled surfaces. In particular, we show that all conical singularities of a random square-tiled surface belong to the same leaf of the horizontal foliation and to the same leaf of the vertical foliation with asymptotic probability 1.
We show that the number of components of a random multicurve and the number of maximal horizontal cylinders of a random square-tiled surface of genus $g$ are both very well-approximated by the number of cycles of a random permutation for an explicit non-uniform measure on the symmetric group of $3g-3$ elements. In particular, we prove that the expected value of these quantities is asymptotically equivalent to $(\log(6g-6) + γ)/2 + \log 2$.
These results are based on our formula for the Masur--Veech volume of the moduli space of holomorphic quadratic differentials combined with deep large genus asymptotic analysis of this formula performed by A.~Aggarwal and with the uniform asymptotic formula for intersection numbers of $ψ$-classes on the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves proved by A.~Aggarwal.
We study the length statistics of the components of a random multicurve on a surface of genus $g \geq 2$. For each fixed genus, the existence of such statistics follows from the work of M.~Mirzakhani, F.~Arana-Herrera and M.~Liu. We prove that as the genus $g$ tends to infinity the statistics converge in law to the Poisson--Dirichlet distribution of parameter $θ=1/2$. In particular, as the genus tends to infinity the mean length of the three longest components converge respectively to $75.8\%$, $17.1\%$ and $4.9\%$ of the total length.
A non-separating multicurve of a surface S of genus g with m punctures is a multicurve c so that S-c is connected. For k>0 define the graph of non-separting k-multicurves to be the graph whose vertices are non-separating multicurves with k components and where two such multicurves are connected by an edge if they can be realized disjointly. We show that if k is smaller than g/2+1 then this graph is hyperbolic.
Square-tiled surfaces can be classified by their number of squares and their cylinder diagrams (also called realizable separatrix diagrams). For the case of $n$ squares and two cone points with angle $4 π$ each, we set up and parametrize the classification into four diagrams. Our main result is to provide formulae for enumeration of square-tiled surfaces in these four diagrams, completing the detailed count for genus two. The formulae are in terms of various well-studied arithmetic functions, enabling us to give asymptotics for each diagram using a new calculation for additive convolutions of …
A \textit{multicurve} $\C$ on a closed orientable surface is defined to be a finite collection of disjoint non-isotopic essential simple closed curves. The Dehn twist $t_{\C}$ about $\C$ is the product of the Dehn twists about the individual curves. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a root of such a Dehn twist, that is, a homeomorphism $h$ such that $h^n = t_{\C}$. We give combinatorial data that corresponds to such roots, and use it to determine upper bounds for $n$. Finally, we classify all such roots up to conjugacy for surfaces of genus 3 and 4…
We express the Masur-Veech volume and the area Siegel-Veech constant of the moduli space of meromorphic quadratic differential with simple poles as polynomials in the intersection numbers of psi-classes supported on the boundary cycles of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves. Our formulae are derived from lattice point count involving the Kontsevich volume polynomials that also appear in Mirzakhani's recursion for the Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli space of bordered hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. A similar formula for the Masur-Veech volume (though without exp…
A square-tiled surface (STS) is a branched cover of the standard square torus with branching over exactly one point. In this paper we consider a randomizing model for STSs and generalizations to branched covers of other simple translation surfaces which we call polygon-tiled surfaces. We obtain a local central limit theorem for the genus and subsequently obtain that the distribution of the genus is asymptotically normal. We also study holonomy vectors (Euclidean displacement vectors between cone points) on a random STS. We show that asymptotically almost surely the set of holonomy vectors of a…
Various curve complexes with vertices representing multicurves on a surface $S$ have been defined, for example [3], [4] and [8]. The homology curve complex $\mathcal{HC}(S,α)$ defined in [7] is one such complex, with vertices corresponding to multicurves in a nontrivial integral homology class $α$. Given two multicurves $m_1$ and $m_2$ corresponding to vertices in $\mathcal{HC}(S,α)$, it was shown in [8] that a path in $\mathcal{HC}(S,α)$ connecting these vertices represents a surface in $S\times \mathbb{R}$, and a simple algorithm for constructing minimal genus surfaces of this type was obtai…
We compute explicitly the absolute contribution of square-tiled surfaces having a single horizontal cylinder to the Masur-Veech volume of any ambient stratum of Abelian differentials. The resulting count is particularly simple and efficient in the large genus asymptotics. Using the recent results of Aggarwal and of Chen-Moeller-Zagier on the long-standing conjecture about the large genus asymptotics of Masur-Veech volumes, we derive that the relative contribution is asymptotically of the order 1/d, where d is the dimension of the stratum. Similarly, we evaluate the contribution of one-cylinder…
We prove that square-tiled surfaces having fixed combinatorics of horizontal cylinder decomposition and tiled with smaller and smaller squares become asymptotically equidistributed in any ambient linear $GL(\mathbb R)$-invariant suborbifold defined over $\mathbb Q$ in the moduli space of Abelian differentials. Moreover, we prove that the combinatorics of the horizontal and of the vertical decompositions are asymptotically uncorrelated. As a consequence, we prove the existence of an asymptotic distribution for the combinatorics of a "random" interval exchange transformation with integer lengths…
We study the one parameter family of genus 2 Riemann surfaces defined by the orbit of the L-shaped translation surface tiled by three squares under the Teichmüller geodesic flow. These surfaces are real algebraic curves with three real components. We are interested in describing these surfaces by their period matrices. We show that the only Riemann surface in that family admitting a non-hyperelliptic automorphism comes from the 3-square-tiled translation surface itself. This makes the computation of an exact expression for period matrices of other Riemann surfaces in that family by the classic…
We show that the number of square-tiled surfaces of genus $g$, with $n$ marked points, with one or both of its horizontal and vertical foliations belonging to fixed mapping class group orbits, and having at most $L$ squares, is asymptotic to $L^{6g-6+2n}$ times a product of constants appearing in Mirzakhani's count of simple closed hyperbolic geodesics. Many of the results in this paper reflect recent discoveries of Delecroix, Goujard, Zograf, and Zorich, but the approach considered here is very different from theirs. We follow conceptual and geometric methods inspired by Mirzakhani's work.
We compute the class of arithmetic genus two Teichmueller curves in the Picard group of pseudo-Hilbert modular surfaces, distinguished according to their torsion order and spin invariant. As an application, we compute the number of genus two square-tiled surfaces with these invariants. The main technical tool is the computation of divisor classes of Hilbert Jacobi forms on the universal abelian surface over the pseudo-Hilbert modular surface.
We study the action of the Veech group of square-tiled surfaces of genus two on homology. This action defines the homology Veech group which is a subgroup of $\textrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{O}_D)$ where $\mathcal{O}_D$ is a quadratic order of square discriminant. Extending a result of Weitze-Schmithüsen we show that also the homology Veech group is a totally non-congruence subgroup with exceptions stemming only from the prime ideals lying above 2. While Weitze-Schmithüsen's result for Veech groups is asymmetric with respect to the spin structure our use of the homology Veech group yields a completely …
We express the Masur-Veech volume and the area Siegel-Veech constant of the moduli space $\mathcal{Q}_{g,n}$ of genus $g$ meromorphic quadratic differentials with $n$ simple poles as polynomials in the intersection numbers of $ψ$-classes with explicit rational coefficients. The formulae obtained in this article result from lattice point counts involving the Kontsevich volume polynomials that also appear in Mirzakhani's recursion for the Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli spaces of bordered hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundaries. A similar formula for the Masur-Veech volume (though with…
We prove formulae for the countings by orbit of square-tiled surfaces of genus two with one singularity. These formulae were conjectured by Hubert & Lelièvre. We show that these countings admit quasimodular forms as generating functions.
Suppose $S$ is a closed, oriented surface of genus at least two. This paper investigates the geometry of the homology multicurve complex, $\mathcal{HC}(S,α)$, of $S$; a complex closely related to complexes studied by Bestvina-Bux-Margalit and Hatcher. A path in $\mathcal{HC}(S,α)$ corresponds to a homotopy class of immersed surfaces in $S\times I$. This observation is used to devise a simple algorithm for constructing quasi-geodesics connecting any two vertices in $\mathcal{HC}(S,α)$, and for constructing minimal genus surfaces in $S\times I$. It is proven that for $g \geq 3$ the best possible…
It is well-known that Teichmuller discs that pass through "integer points'' of the moduli space of abelian differentials are very special: they are closed complex geodesics. However, the structure of these special Teichmuller discs is mostly unexplored: their number, genus, area, cusps, etc. We prove that in genus two all translation surfaces in H(2) tiled by a prime number n > 3 of squares fall into exactly two Teichmuller discs, only one of them with elliptic points, and that the genus of these discs has a cubic growth rate in n.
As main result we show that for each g > 1 there is some translation surface of genus g whose Veech group is a non congruence subgroup of SL(2,Z). We use origamis/square-tiled surfaces to produce our examples. The article is divided into two parts: In the first part we introduce translation surfaces, origamis, Veech groups and Teichmueller curves and show for two origamis in genus 2 that their Veech groups are non congruence groups; in the second part we provide a technique that produces sequences of origamis whose Veech groups are decreasing. This is used to prove the main result.
Abelian differentials on Riemann surfaces can be seen as translation surfaces, which are flat surfaces with cone-type singularities. Closed geodesics for the associated flat metrics form cylinders whose number under a given maximal length generically has quadratic asymptotics in this length, with a common coefficient constant for the quadratic asymptotics called a Siegel--Veech constant which is shared by almost all surfaces in each moduli space of translation surfaces. Square-tiled surfaces are specific translation surfaces which have their own quadratic asymptotics for the number of cylinder…
A meander is a topological configuration of a line and a simple closed curve in the plane (or a pair of simple closed curves on the 2-sphere) intersecting transversally. Meanders can be traced back to H. Poincaré and naturally appear in various areas of mathematics, theoretical physics and computational biology (in particular, they provide a model of polymer folding). Enumeration of meanders is an important open problem. The number of meanders with 2N crossings grows exponentially when N grows, but the longstanding problem on the precise asymptotics is still out of reach. We show that the situ…
