In this paper we consider a system of equations that describes a class of mass-conserving aggregation phenomena, including gravitational collapse and bacterial chemotaxis. In spatial dimensions strictly larger than two, and under the assumptions of radial symmetry, it is known that this system has at least two stable mechanisms of singularity formation (see e.g. M.P. Brenner et al.1999, Nonlinearity, 12, 1071-1098); one type is self-similar, and may be viewed as a trade-off between diffusion and attraction, while in the other type the attraction prevails over the diffusion and a non-self-similar shock wave results. Our main result identifies a class of initial data for which the blow-up behaviour is of the former, self-similar type. The blow-up profile is characterized as belonging to a subset of stationary solutions of the associated ordinary differential equation.
We show that the attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu - χ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v_1) + ξ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v_2)\\ \partial_t v_1 = Δv_1 - βv_1 + αu \\ \partial_t v_2 = Δv_2 - δv_2 + γu, \end{cases} \end{equation*} posed with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in bounded domains $Ω=B_R \subset \mathbb{R}^3$, $R>0$, admits radially symmetric solutions which blow-up in finite time if it is attraction-dominated in the sense that $χα-ξγ>0$.
This paper deals with the fully parabolic attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system \begin{align*} u_t=Δu-χ\nabla \cdot (u\nabla v)+ξ\nabla\cdot(u \nabla w), \quad v_t=Δv-v+u, \quad w_t=Δw-w+u, \quad x \in Ω,\ t>0 \end{align*} under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and initial conditions, where $Ω$ is an open ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \ge 3$), $χ, ξ>0$ are constants. When $w=0$, finite-time blow-up in the corresponding Keller-Segel system has already been obtained. However, finite-time blow-up in the above attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system has not yet been established except for the …
In this paper we study a zero-flux attraction-repulsion che\-mo\-taxis-system. We show that despite any mutual interplay between the repulsive and attractive coefficients from the corresponding chemo-sensitivities, even less any restriction on their own sizes, if the production rate of that chemical signal responsible of the cellular coalescence is sublinear, then any initial data emanate a unique global classical solution, which is as well bounded. Further, in a remark of the manuscript, we also address an open question given in \cite{Viglialoro2019RepulsionAttraction}.
This paper is concerned with the attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system with superlinear logistic degradation, \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu - χ\nabla\cdot(u \nabla v) + ξ\nabla\cdot (u \nabla w) + λu - μu^k, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\[1.05mm] 0= Δv + αu - βv, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\[1.05mm] 0= Δw + γu - δw, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0, \end{cases} \end{align*} under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, in a ball $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \ge 3$), with constant parameters $λ\in \mathbb{R}$, $k>1$, $μ, χ, ξ, α, β, γ, δ>0$. Blow-up phenomena in the system have been well investigated in the c…
We consider a degenerate chemotaxis model with two-species and two-stimuli in dimension $d\geq 3$ and find two critical curves intersecting at one same point which separate the global existence and blow up of weak solutions to the problem. More precisely, above these curves (i.e. subcritical case), the problem admits a global weak solution obtained by the limits of strong solutions to an approximated system. Based on the second moment of solutions, initial data are constructed to make sure blow up occurs in finite time below these curves (i.e. critical and supercritical cases). In addition, th…
In this paper we study classical solutions to the zero--flux attraction--repulsion chemotaxis--system \begin{equation}\label{ProblemAbstract} \tag{$\Diamond$} \begin{cases} u_{ t}=Δu -χ\nabla \cdot (u\nabla v)+ξ\nabla \cdot (u\nabla w) & \textrm{in }Ω\times (0,t^*), \\ 0=Δv+αu-βv & \textrm{in } Ω\times (0,t^*),\\ 0=Δw+γu-δw & \textrm{in } Ω\times (0,t^*),\\ \end{cases} \end{equation} where $Ω$ is a smooth and bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^2$, $t^*$ is the blow--up time and $α,β,γ,δ,χ,ξ$ are positive real numbers. From the literature it is known that under a proper interplay between the above p…
This paper deals with the quasilinear attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t=\nabla\cdot \big((u+1)^{m-1}\nabla u -χu(u+1)^{p-2}\nabla v +ξu(u+1)^{q-2}\nabla w\big) +f(u), \\[1.05mm] 0=Δv+αu-βv, \\[1.05mm] 0=Δw+γu-δw \end{cases} \end{align*} in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \in \mathbb{N}$) with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$, where $m, p, q \in \mathbb{R}$, $χ, ξ, α, β, γ, δ>0$ are constants. Moreover, it is supposed that the function $f$ satisfies $f(u)\equiv0$ in the study of boundedness, whereas, when considering blow-up, it is assumed that $m>0…
We give a sufficient condition for blow up of positive mild solutions to an initial value problem for a nonautonomous weakly coupled system with distinct fractional diffusions. The proof is based on the study of blow up of a particular system of ordinary differential equations.
This paper is concerned with the blow-up property of solutions to an initial boundary value problem for a reaction diffusion equation with special diffusion processes. It is shown, under certain conditions on the initial data, that the solutions to this problem blow up in finite time, by combining Hardy inequality, "moving" potential well methods with some differential inequalities. Moreover, the upper and lower bounds for the blow-up time are also derived when blow-up occurs.
This work studies nonnegative solutions for the Cauchy, Neumann, and Dirichlet problems of a logistic type reaction-diffusion equation. The finite time blowup results for nonnegative solutions under various restrictions on the coefficients of this equation are presented. Applying the results allows one to construct some reaction diffusion systems with the so-called diffusion-induced blowup phenomenon, particularly in the case of equal diffusion rates.
We concider, the blow-up solutions for a coupled reaction diffusion system with gradient terms. The main purpose is to understand whether the gradient terms effect the blow-up properties. We derive the upper and lower blow-up rate estimates under certain assumptions.
In this paper we apply the differential inequality technique of Payne {\it et. al} \cite{Payne&SchaeferRobin08} to show that a reaction-diffusion system admits blow-up solutions, and to determine an upper bound for the blow-up time. For a particular nonlinearity, a lower bound on the blow-up time, when blow-up does occur, is also given.
It is shown that self-similar blow-up for a fourth-order reaction-diffusion equation is incomplete in the sense that, in general, there exists a self-similar extension of solutions after blow-up. Other types of complete blow-up of non self-similar form are discussed.
We study the blow up solutions of a semilinear reaction diffusion system coupled in both equations and boundary conditions. The main purpose is to understand how the reaction terms and the absorption terms affect the blow-up properties. We derive the lower and upper bound for the blow-up rate, and find the blow-up set under certain assumptions.
We consider the blow-up of solutions for a semilinear reaction diffusion equation with exponential reaction term. It is know that certain solutions that can be continued beyond the blow-up time possess a nonconstant selfsimilar blow-up profile. Our aim is to find the final time blow-up profile for such solutions. The proof is based on general ideas using semigroup estimates. The same approach works also for the power nonlinearity.
The purpose of the current paper is to unveil the key mechanism which is responsible for the occurrence of {\it Turing-type instability} for a non-local Fisher-KPP type model. In particular, we prove that the solution of the considered non-local Fisher-KPP equation in the neighbourhood of a constant stationary solution, is destabilized via a {\it diffusion-driven blow-up}. It is also shown that the observed {\it diffusion-driven blow-up} is complete, whilst its blow-up rate is completely classified. Finally, the detected {\it diffusion-driven instability} results in the formation of unstable b…
In this paper we provide an example of a class of two reaction-diffusion-ODE equations with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, in which Turing-type instability not only destabilizes constant steady states but also induces blow-up of nonnegative spatially heterogeneous solutions. Solutions of this problem preserve nonnegativity and uniform boundedness of the total mass. Moreover, for the corresponding system with two non-zero diffusion coefficients, all nonnegative solutions are global in time. We prove that a removal of diffusion in one of the equations leads to a finite-time blow-up of …
A time-space fractional reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded domain is considered. Under some conditions on the initial data, we show that solutions may experience blow-up in a finite time. However, for realistic initial conditions, solutions are global in time. Moreover, the asymptotic behavior of bounded solutions is analysed.
Various formal blow-up scenarious for the Navier--Stokes equaitons in 3D are discussed. A particular interest is payed to "twistor mechanisms" based on angular logarithmic blow-up travelling waves, and to a formation of "blow-up tornado" about the singular stationary Slezkin--Landau solutions (1934--44) of a submerged jet. A survey on various related aspects of singularity analysis for nonlinear parabolic PDEs is enclosed.
Five types of blow-up patterns that can occur for the 4th-order semilinear parabolic equation of reaction-diffusion type $$ u_t= -Δ^2 u + |u|^{p-1} u \quad {in} \quad \ren \times (0,T), p>1, \quad \lim_{t \to T^-}\sup_{x \in \ren} |u(x,t)|= +\iy, $$ are discussed. For the semilinear heat equation $u_t= Δu+ u^p$, various blow-up patterns were under scrutiny since 1980s, while the case of higher-order diffusion was studied much less, regardless a wide range of its application.
This paper deals with unbounded solutions to a class of chemotaxis systems. In particular, for a rather general attraction-repulsion model, with nonlinear productions, diffusion, sensitivities and logistic term, we detect Lebesgue spaces where given unbounded solutions blow-up also in the corresponding norms of those spaces; subsequently, estimates for the blow-up time are established. Finally, for a simplified version of the model, some blow-up criteria are proved.
In the present paper initial problems for the semilinear integro-differential diffusion equation and system are considered. The analogue of Duhamel principle for the linear integro-differential diffusion equation is proved. The results on existence of local mild solutions and Fujita-type critical exponents to the semilinear integro-differential diffusion equation and system are presented.
The focus of this paper is on solutions to a two-dimensional Keller-Segel system containing sub-logistic sources. We show that the presence of sub-logistic terms is adequate to prevent blow-up phenomena even in strongly degenerate Keller-Segel systems. Our proof relies on several techniques, including parabolic regularity theory in Orlicz spaces, variational arguments, interpolation inequalities, and the Moser iteration method.
The origin of non self-similar blow-up in higher-order reaction-diffusion (parabolic), wave (hyperbolic) and nonlinear dispersion equations is explained by a combination of various methods. Some links and similarities with double-log blow-up terms occurring in earlier studies of plasma physics second-order parabolic equations and the nonlinear critical Schrödinger equation are discussed. On the other hand, the log-log factor obtained in Petrovskii's boundary regularity study of a paraboloid vertex for the heat equation in 1934 was the first its appearance in PDE theory.
The aim of this paper is to refine some results concerning the blow-up of solutions of the exponential reaction-diffusion equation. We consider solutions that blow-up in finite time, but continue to exist as weak solutions beyond the blow-up time. The main result is that these solutions become regular immediately after the blow-up time. This result improves on that of Fila, Matano and Polácik, who consider radially nonincreasing solutions, whereas no such assumption is needed here. Under certain additional assumptions we also obtain that the regularization is asymptotically selfsimilar. Moreov…
For a specific choice of the diffusion, the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel system with non-linear diffusion (also referred to as the quasi-linear Smoluchowski-Poisson equation) exhibits an interesting threshold phenomenon: there is a critical mass $M_c>0$ such that all the solutions with initial data of mass smaller or equal to $M_c$ exist globally while the solution blows up in finite time for a large class of initial data with mass greater than $M_c$. Unlike in space dimension 2, finite mass self-similar blowing-up solutions are shown to exist in space dimension $d?3$.
We study the Cauchy problem for a system of semi-linear coupled fractional-diffusion equations with polynomial nonlinearities posed in $% \mathbb{R}_{+}\times \mathbb{R}^{N}$. Under appropriate conditions on the exponents and the orders of the fractional time derivatives, we present a critical value of the dimension N, for which global solutions with small data exist, otherwise solutions blow-up in finite time. Furthermore, the large time behavior of global solutions is discussed.
Let $n\ge 3$ and $0<m<\frac{n-2}{n}$. We will extend the results of J.L. Vazquez and M. Winkler and prove the uniqueness of finite points blow-up solutions of the fast diffusion equation $u_t=Δu^m$ in both bounded domains and $\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,\infty)$. We will also construct initial data such that the corresponding solution of the fast diffusion equation in bounded domain oscillate between infinity and some positive constant as $t\to\infty$.
This work deals with a parabolic chemotaxis model with nonlinear diffusion and nonlocal reaction source. The problem is formulated on the whole space and, depending on a specific interplay between the coefficients associated to such diffusion and reaction, we establish that all given solutions are uniformly bounded in time.
We consider a degenerate chemotaxis model with two-species and two-stimuli in dimension $d \geq 3$. Under the hypothesis of integrable initial data with finite second moment and energy, we show local-in-time existence for any mass of free-energy solutions, namely weak solutions with some free energy estimates. We exhibit that the qualitative behavior of solutions is decided by a set of critical values: there is a critical value of a parameter pair in the system of equations for which there is a global-in-time energy solution and there exist blowing-up free-energy solutions under a criticality …
We study the blow up profiles associated to the following second order reaction-diffusion equation with non-homogeneous reaction: $$ \partial_tu=\partial_{xx}(u^m) + |x|^σu, $$ with $σ>0$. Through this study, we show that the non-homogeneous coefficient $|x|^σ$ has a strong influence on the blow up behavior of the solutions. First of all, it follows that finite time blow up occurs for self-similar solutions $u$, a feature that does not appear in the well known autonomous case $σ=0$. Moreover, we show that there are three different types of blow up self-similar profiles, depending on whether th…
A parabolic-parabolic (Patlak-) Keller-Segel model in up to three space dimensions with nonlinear cell diffusion and an additional nonlinear cross-diffusion term is analyzed. The main feature of this model is that there exists a new entropy functional, yielding gradient estimates for the cell density and chemical concentration. For arbitrarily small cross-diffusion coefficients and for suitable exponents of the nonlinear diffusion terms, the global-in-time existence of weak solutions is proved, thus preventing finite-time blow up of the cell density. The global existence result also holds for …
We study the initial-boundary value problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation with nonlinear diffusion $u_t=Δ_p u+|\nabla u|^q$ in a two-dimensional domain for $q>p>2$. It is known that the spatial derivative of solutions may become unbounded in finite time while the solutions themselves remain bounded. We show that, for suitably localized and monotone initial data, the gradient blow-up occurs at a single point of the boundary. Such a result was known up to now only in the case of linear diffusion ($p=2$). The analysis in the case $p>2$ is considerably more delicate.
We classify the self-similar blow-up profiles for the following reaction-diffusion equation with critical strong weighted reaction and unbounded weight: $$ \partial_tu=\partial_{xx}(u^m) + |x|^σu^p, $$ posed for $x\in\real$, $t\geq0$, where $m>1$, $0<p<1$ such that $m+p=2$ and $σ>2$ completing the analysis performed in a recent work where this very interesting critical case was left aside. We show that finite time blow-up solutions in self-similar form exist for $σ>2$. Moreover all the blow-up profiles have compact support and their supports are \emph{localized}: there exists an explicit $η>0$…
We study the self-similar blow-up profiles associated to the following second order reaction-diffusion equation with strong weighted reaction and unbounded weight: $$ \partial_tu=\partial_{xx}(u^m) + |x|^σu^p, $$ posed for $x\in\real$, $t\geq0$, where $m>1$, $0<p<1$ and $σ>2(1-p)/(m-1)$. As a first outcome, we show that finite time blow-up solutions in self-similar form exist for $m+p>2$ and $σ$ in the considered range, a fact that is completely new: in the already studied reaction-diffusion equation without weights there is no finite time blow-up when $p<1$. We moreover prove that, if the con…
This paper is concerned with weak solutions of the degenerate viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation $$\partial_t u-Δ_p u=|\nabla u|^q,$$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, where $p>2$ and $q>p-1$. With the goal of studying the gradient blow-up phenomenon for this problem, we first establish local well-posedness with blow-up alternative in $W^{1, \infty}$ norm. We then obtain a precise gradient estimate involving the distance to the boundary. It shows in particular that the gradient blow-up can take place only on the boundary. A regularizing effect for $u_…
We study positive blowing-up solutions of the system: $$u_{t}-δΔu=v^p,\,\,\, v_{t}-Δv=u^{q},$$ as well as of some more general systems. For any $p,\,q>1$, we prove single-point blow-up for any radially decreasing, positive and classical solution in a ball. This improves on previously known results in 3 directions: (i) no type I blow-up assumption is made (and it is known that this property may fail); (ii) no equidiffusivity is assumed, i.e. any $δ>0$ is allowed; (iii) a large class of nonlinearities $F(u,v)$, $G(u,v)$ can be handled, which need not follow a precise power behavior. As side resu…
We investigate blow-up phenomena for positive solutions of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations including a nonlinear convection term $\partial_t u = Δu - g(u) \cdot \nabla u + f(u)$ in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$ under the dissipative dynamical boundary conditions $σ\partial_t u + \partial_νu =0$. Some conditions on $g$ and $f$ are discussed to state if the positive solutions blow up in finite time or not. Moreover, for certain classes of nonlinearities, an upper-bound for the blow-up time can be derived and the blow-up rate can be determinated.
We classify all the blow-up solutions in self-similar form to the following reaction-diffusion equation $$ \partial_tu=Δu^m+|x|^σu^p, $$ posed for $(x,t)\in\real^N\times(0,T)$, with $m>1$, $1\leq p<m$ and $-2(p-1)/(m-1)<σ<\infty$. We prove that there are several types of self-similar solutions with respect to the local behavior near the origin, and their existence depends on the magnitude of $σ$. In particular, these solutions have different blow-up sets and rates: some of them have $x=0$ as a blow-up point, some other only blow up at (space) infinity. We thus emphasize on the effect of the we…
We prove a blow-up criterion in terms of an $L_2$-bound of the curvature for solutions to the curve diffusion flow if the maximal time of existence is finite. In our setting, we consider an evolving family of curves driven by curve diffusion flow, which has free boundary points supported on a line. The evolving curve has fixed contact angle $α\in (0, π)$ with that line and satisfies a no-flux condition. The proof is led by contradiction: A compactness argument combined with the short time existence result enables us to extend the flow, which contradicts the maximality of the solution.
We consider the semilinear diffusion equation $\partial$ t u = Au + |u| $α$ u in the half-space R N + := R N --1 x (0, +$\infty$), where A is a linear diffusion operator, which may be the classical Laplace operator, or a fractional Laplace operator, or an appropriate non regularizing nonlocal operator. The equation is supplemented with an initial data u(0, x) = u 0 (x) which is nonnegative in the half-space R N + , and the Dirichlet boundary condition u(t, x ' , 0) = 0 for x ' $\in$ R N --1. We prove that if the symbol of the operator A is of order a|$ξ$| $β$ near the origin $ξ$ = 0, for some …
In this work, we construct a transformation between the solutions to the following reaction-convection-diffusion equation $$ \partial_t u=(u^m)_{xx}+a(x)(u^m)_x+b(x)u^m, $$ posed for $x\in\real$, $t\geq0$ and $m>1$, where $a$, $b$ are two continuous real functions, and the solutions to the nonhomogeneous diffusion equation of porous medium type $$ f(y)\partial_τθ=(θ^m)_{yy}, $$ posed in the half-line $y\in[0,\infty)$ with $τ\geq0$, $m>1$ and suitable density functions $f(y)$. We apply this correspondence to the case of constant coefficients $a(x)=1$ and $b(x)=K>0$. For this case, we prove that…
