We show that with probability 1, the trace B[0,1] of Brownian motion in space, has positive capacity with respect to exactly the same kernels as the unit square. More precisely, the energy of occupation measure on B[0,1] in the kernel f(|x-y|), is bounded above and below by constant multiples of the energy of Lebesgue measure on the unit square. (The constants are random, but do not depend on the kernel.) As an application, we give almost-sure asymptotics for the probability that an alpha-stable process approaches within epsilon of B[0,1], conditional on B[0,1]. The upper bound on energy is based on a strong law for the approximate self-intersections of the Brownian path. We also prove analogous capacity estimates for planar Brownian motion and for the zero-set of one-dimensional Brownian motion.
It is shown that the trace of $3$ dimensional Brownian motion contains arithmetic progressions of length $5$ and no arithmetic progressions of length $6$ a.s.
The trace of a Markov process is the time changed process of the original process on the support of the Revuz measure used in the time change. In this paper, we will concentrate on the reflecting Brownian motions on certain closed strips. On one hand, we will formulate the concrete expression of the Dirichlet forms associated with the traces of such reflecting Brownian motions on the boundary. On the other hand, the limits of these traces as the distance between the upper and lower boundaries tends to $0$ or $\infty$ will be further obtained.
We show the result that is stated in the title of the paper, which has consequences about decomposition of Brownian loop-soup clusters in two dimensions.
In this paper we give some basic and important properties of several typical Banach spaces of functions of $G$-Brownian motion pathes induced by a sublinear expectation--G-expectation. Many results can be also applied to more general situations. A generalized version of Kolmogorov's criterion for continuous modification of a stochastic process is also obtained. The results can be applied to continuous time dynamic and coherent risk measures in finance in particular for path-dependence risky positions under situations of volatility model uncertainty.
Let $W$ denote $d$-dimensional Brownian motion. We find an explicit formula for the essential supremum of Hausdorff dimension of $W(E)\cap F$, where $E\subset(0,\infty)$ and $F\subset \mathbf {R}^d$ are arbitrary nonrandom compact sets. Our formula is related intimately to the thermal capacity of Watson [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 37 (1978) 342-362]. We prove also that when $d\ge2$, our formula can be described in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of $E\times F$, where $E\times F$ is viewed as a subspace of space time.
Let U be a Haar distributed unitary matrix in U(n)or O(n). We show that after centering the double index process $$ W^{(n)} (s,t) = \sum_{i \leq \lfloor ns \rfloor, j \leq \lfloor nt\rfloor} |U_{ij}|^2 $$ converges in distribution to the bivariate tied-down Brownian bridge. The proof relies on the notion of second order freeness.
For a class of Laplace exponents we derive the heat trace asymptotics of the generator of the corresponding subordinate Brownian motion on Euclidean space. The terms in the asymptotic expansion are found to depend both on the geometry of Euclidean space and probabilistic properties of the subordinator. The key assumption is the existence of a suitable density for the Levy measure of the subordinator. An intermediate step is the computation of the zeta function of the generator. We employ methods from the theory of classical pseudodifferential operators on Euclidean space. The analysis is highl…
We show that the image of a 2-dimensional set under d-dimensional, 2-parameter Brownian sheet can have positive Lebesgue measure, if and only if the set in question has positive (d/2)-dimensional Bessel-Riesz capacity. Our methods solve a problem of J.-P. Kahane.
The main purpose of this paper is to explore the structure of regular subspaces of 1-dim Brownian motion. As outlined in \cite{FMG} every such regular subspace can be characterized by a measure-dense set $G$. When $G$ is open, $F=G^c$ is the boundary of $G$ and, before leaving $G$, the diffusion associated with the regular subspace is nothing but Brownian motion. Their traces on $F$ still inherit the inclusion relation, in other words, the trace Dirichlet form of regular subspace on $F$ is still a regular subspace of trace Dirichlet form of one-dimensional Brownian motion on $F$. Moreover we h…
We consider a super-Brownian motion $X$. Its canonical measures can be studied through the path-valued process called the Brownian snake. We obtain the limiting behavior of the volume of the $ε$-neighborhood for the range of the Brownian snake, and as a consequence we derive the analogous result for the range of super-Brownian motion and for the support of the integrated super-Brownian excursion. Then we prove the support of $X_t$ is capacity-equivalent to $[0,1]^2$ in $\R^d$, $d\geq 3$, and the range of $X$, as well as the support of the integrated super-Brownian excursion are capacity-equiva…
\def\R{\mathbb R} We give a characterization of G-regularity for super-Brownian motion and the Brownian snake. More precisely, we define a capacity on $E=(0,\infty)\times \R^d$, which is not invariant by translation. We then prove that the hitting probability of a Borel set $A\subset E$ for the graph of the Brownian snake starting at $(0,0)$ is comparable, up to multiplicative constants, to its capacity. This implies that super-Brownian motion started at time 0 at the Dirac mass $δ_0$ hits immediately $A$ (that is $(0,0)$ is G-regular for $A^c$) if and only if its capacity is infinite. As a di…
We give potential theoretic estimates for the probability that a set $A$ contains a double point of planar Brownian motion run for unit time. Unlike the probability for $A$ to intersect the range of a Markov process, this cannot be estimated by a capacity of the set $A$. Instead, we introduce the notion of a capacity with respect to two gauge functions simultaneously. We also give a polar decomposition of $A$ into a set that never intersects the set of Brownian double points and a set for which intersection with the set of Brownian double points is the same as intersection with the Brownian pa…
A uniform dimensional result for normally reflected Brownian motion (RBM) in a large class of non-smooth domains is established. Exact Hausdorff dimensions for the boundary occupation time and the boundary trace of RBM are given. Extensions to stable-like jump processes and to symmetric reflecting diffusions are also mentioned.
Known results show that the diameter $d_1$ of the trace of planar Brownian motion run for unit time satisfies $1.595 \leq \mathbb{E} d_1 \leq 2.507$. This note improves these bounds to $1.601 \leq \mathbb{E} d_1 \leq 2.355$. Simulations suggest that $\mathbb{E} d_1 \approx 1.99$.
Nils Tongring (1987) proved sufficient conditions for a compact set to contain $k$-tuple points of a Brownian motion. In this paper, we extend these findings to the fractional Brownian motion. Using the property of strong local nondeterminism, we show that if $B$ is a fractional Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with Hurst index $H$ such that $Hd=1$, and $E$ is a fixed, nonempty compact set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with positive capacity with respect to the function $ϕ(s) = (\log_+(1/s))^k$, then $E$ contains $k$-tuple points with positive probability. For the $Hd > 1$ case, the same result holds wit…
The probability that a transient Markov chain, or a Brownian path, will ever visit a given set Lambda, is classically estimated using the capacity of Lambda with respect to the Green kernel G(x,y). We show that replacing the Green kernel by the Martin kernel G(x,y)/G(0,y) yields improved estimates, which are exact up to a factor of 2. These estimates are applied to random walks on lattices, and also to explain a connection found by R. Lyons between capacity and percolation on trees.
We provide a decomposition of the trace of the Brownian motion into a simple path and an independent Brownian soup of loops that intersect the simple path. More precisely, we prove that any subsequential scaling limit of the loop erased random walk is a simple path (a new result in three dimensions), which can be taken as the simple path of the decomposition. In three dimensions, we also prove that the Hausdorff dimension of any such subsequential scaling limit lies in $(1,\frac53]$. We conjecture that our decomposition characterizes uniquely the law of the simple path. If so, our results woul…
We obtain the Brownian net of Sun and Swart (2008) as the scaling limit of the paths traced out by a system of continuous (one-dimensional) space and time branching and coalescing random walks. This demonstrates a certain universality of the net, which we have not seen explored elsewhere. The walks themselves arise in a natural way as the ancestral lineages relating individuals in a sample from a biological population evolving according to the spatial Lambda-Fleming-Viot process. Our scaling reveals the effect, in dimension one, of spatial structure on the spread of a selectively advantageous …
In this paper by calculating carefully the capacities (defined by high order Sobolev norms on the Wiener space) for some functions of Brownian motion, we show that the dyadic approximations of the sample paths of the Brownian motion converge in the $p$-variation distance to the Brownian motion except for a slim set (i.e. except for a zero subset with respect to the capacity on the Wiener space of any order). This presents a way for studying quasi-sure properties of Wiener functionals by means of the rough path analysis.
In this work, we prove a version of Hörmander's theorem for a stochastic evolution equation driven by a trace-class fractional Brownian motion with Hurst exponent $\frac{1}{2} < H < 1$ and an analytic semigroup on a given separable Hilbert space. In contrast to the classical finite-dimensional case, the Jacobian operator in typical solutions of parabolic stochastic PDEs is not invertible which causes a severe difficulty in expressing the Malliavin matrix in terms of an adapted process. Under a Hörmander's bracket condition and some algebraic constraints on the vector fields combined with the r…
The regular Dirichlet extension is the dual concept of regular Dirichlet subspace. The main purpose of this paper is to characterize all the regular Dirichlet extensions of one-dimensional Brownian motion and to explore their structures. It is shown that every regular Dirichlet extension of one-dimensional Brownian motion may essentially decomposed into at most countable disjoint invariant intervals and an $\mathcal{E}$-polar set relative to this regular Dirichlet extension. On each invariant interval the regular Dirichlet extension is characterized uniquely by a scale function in a given clas…
We prove the cut-off phenomenon in total variation distance for the Brownian motions traced on the classical symmetric spaces of compact type, that is to say: (1) the classical simple compact Lie groups: special orthogonal groups, special unitary groups and compact symplectic groups; (2) the real, complex and quaternionic Grassmannian varieties (including the real spheres and complex or quaternionic projective spaces); (3) the spaces of structures: SU(n)/SO(n), SO(2n)/U(n), SU(2n)/USp(n), and USp(n)/U(n). In each case, we give explicit lower bounds for the total variation distance DTV(mu_t,Haa…
We show that the Laplace transforms of traces of words in independant unitary Brownian motions converge towards an analytic function on a non trivial disc. This results allow to study asymptotics of Wilson loops under the unitary Yang-Mills measure on the plane. The limiting objects obtained are shown to be characterized by equations analog to Schwinger-Dyson's ones, named here after Makeenko and Migdal.
We consider a two parameter family of unitarily invariant diffusion processes on the general linear group $\mathbb{GL}_N$ of $N\times N$ invertible matrices, that includes the standard Brownian motion as well as the usual unitary Brownian motion as special cases. We prove that all such processes have Gaussian fluctuations in high dimension with error of order $O(1/N)$; this is in terms of the finite dimensional distributions of the process under a large class of test functions known as trace polynomials. We give an explicit characterization of the covariance of the Gaussian fluctuation field, …
Questions regarding the continuity in $κ$ of the $SLE_κ$ traces and maps appear very naturally in the study of SLE. In order to study the first question, we consider a natural coupling of SLE traces: for different values of $κ$ we use the same Brownian motion. It is very natural to assume that with probability one, $SLE_κ$ depends continuously on $κ$. It is rather easy to show that $SLE$ is continuous in the Carathéodory sense, but showing that $SLE$ traces are continuous in the uniform sense is much harder. In this note we show that for a given sequence $κ_j\toκ\in (0, 8/3)$, for almost every…
Analogues of stepping--stone models are considered where the site--space is continuous, the migration process is a general Markov process, and the type--space is infinite. Such processes were defined in previous work of the second author by specifying a Feller transition semigroup in terms of expectations of suitable functionals for systems of coalescing Markov processes. An alternative representation is obtained here in terms of a limit of interacting particle systems. It is shown that, under a mild condition on the migration process, the continuum--sites stepping--stone process has continuou…
We ask the question "when will natural selection on a gene in a spatially structured population cause a detectable trace in the patterns of genetic variation observed in the contemporary population?". We focus on the situation in which 'neighbourhood size', that is the effective local population density, is small. The genealogy relating individuals in a sample from the population is embedded in a spatial version of the ancestral selection graph and through applying a diffusive scaling to this object we show that whereas in dimensions at least three, selection is barely impeded by the spatial s…
Let $T^m$ be the $m$-dimensional unit torus, $m \in N$. The torsional rigidity of an open set $Ω\subset T^m$ is the integral with respect to Lebesgue measure over all starting points $x \in Ω$ of the expected lifetime in $Ω$ of a Brownian motion starting at $x$. In this paper we consider $Ω= T^m \backslash β[0,t]$, the complement of the path $β[0,t]$ of an independent Brownian motion up to time $t$. We compute the leading order asymptotic behaviour of the expectation of the torsional rigidity in the limit as $t \to \infty$. For $m=2$ the main contribution comes from the components in $T^2 \bac…
In this paper, we construct the Brownian motion of Liouville Quantum Gravity with central charge $c=1$ (more precisely we restrict to the corresponding free field theory). Liouville quantum gravity with $c=1$ corresponds to two-dimensional string theory and is the conjectural scaling limit of large planar maps weighted with a $O(n=2)$ loop model or a $Q=4$-state Potts model embedded in a two dimensional surface in a conformal manner. Following \cite{GRV1}, we start by constructing the critical LBM from one fixed point $x\in\mathbb{R}^2$ (or $x\in§^2$), which amounts to changing the speed of a …
We generalize the Benjamini-Pemantle-Peres estimate relating hitting probability and Martin capacity to the setting of manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below. As applications we obtain: (1) a sharp estimate for the probability that Brownian motion comes close to the high curvature part of a Ricci-flat manifold, (2) a proof of an unpublished theorem of Naber that every noncollapsed limit of Ricci-flat manifolds is a weak solution of the Einstein equations, (3) an effective intersection estimate for two independent Brownian motions on manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and positiv…
Consider a large system of $N$ Brownian motions in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with some non-degenerate initial measure on some fixed time interval $[0,β]$ with symmetrised initial-terminal condition. That is, for any $i$, the terminal location of the $i$-th motion is affixed to the initial point of the $σ(i)$-th motion, where $σ$ is a uniformly distributed random permutation of $1,...,N$. Such systems play an important role in quantum physics in the description of Boson systems at positive temperature $1/β$. In this paper, we describe the large-N behaviour of the empirical path measure (the mean of the Di…
