The trace of a Markov process is the time changed process of the original process on the support of the Revuz measure used in the time change. In this paper, we will concentrate on the reflecting Brownian motions on certain closed strips. On one hand, we will formulate the concrete expression of the Dirichlet forms associated with the traces of such reflecting Brownian motions on the boundary. On the other hand, the limits of these traces as the distance between the upper and lower boundaries tends to $0$ or $\infty$ will be further obtained.
We consider a branching Brownian motion with linear drift in which particles are killed on exiting the interval (0,K) and study the evolution of the process on the event of survival as the width of the interval shrinks to the critical value at which survival is no longer possible. We combine spine techniques and a backbone decomposition to obtain exact asymptotics for the near-critical survival probability. This allows us to deduce the existence of a quasi-stationary limit result for the process conditioned on survival which reveals that the backbone thins down to a spine as we approach critic…
It is shown that the trace of $3$ dimensional Brownian motion contains arithmetic progressions of length $5$ and no arithmetic progressions of length $6$ a.s.
We consider the tail probabilities for Brownian exit time from a class of perturbed multi-strips in Euclidean plane. Under some assumptions we prove that the long stays in a perturbed multi-strip are more likely than those in a strip of the same width. This effect is related to the existence of the trapped modes in waveguides.
We show the result that is stated in the title of the paper, which has consequences about decomposition of Brownian loop-soup clusters in two dimensions.
We introduce the notion of strip complex. A strip complex is a special type of complex obtained by gluing "strips" along their natural boundaries according to a given graph structure. The most familiar example is the one dimensional complex classically associated with a graph, in which case the strips are simply copies of the unit interval (our setup actually allows for variable edge length). A leading key example is treebolic space, a geometric object studied in a number of recent articles, which arises as a horocyclic product of a metric tree with the hyperbolic plane. In this case, the grap…
Let U be a Haar distributed unitary matrix in U(n)or O(n). We show that after centering the double index process $$ W^{(n)} (s,t) = \sum_{i \leq \lfloor ns \rfloor, j \leq \lfloor nt\rfloor} |U_{ij}|^2 $$ converges in distribution to the bivariate tied-down Brownian bridge. The proof relies on the notion of second order freeness.
For a class of Laplace exponents we derive the heat trace asymptotics of the generator of the corresponding subordinate Brownian motion on Euclidean space. The terms in the asymptotic expansion are found to depend both on the geometry of Euclidean space and probabilistic properties of the subordinator. The key assumption is the existence of a suitable density for the Levy measure of the subordinator. An intermediate step is the computation of the zeta function of the generator. We employ methods from the theory of classical pseudodifferential operators on Euclidean space. The analysis is highl…
We show that with probability 1, the trace B[0,1] of Brownian motion in space, has positive capacity with respect to exactly the same kernels as the unit square. More precisely, the energy of occupation measure on B[0,1] in the kernel f(|x-y|), is bounded above and below by constant multiples of the energy of Lebesgue measure on the unit square. (The constants are random, but do not depend on the kernel.) As an application, we give almost-sure asymptotics for the probability that an alpha-stable process approaches within epsilon of B[0,1], conditional on B[0,1]. The upper bound on energy is ba…
The main purpose of this paper is to explore the structure of regular subspaces of 1-dim Brownian motion. As outlined in \cite{FMG} every such regular subspace can be characterized by a measure-dense set $G$. When $G$ is open, $F=G^c$ is the boundary of $G$ and, before leaving $G$, the diffusion associated with the regular subspace is nothing but Brownian motion. Their traces on $F$ still inherit the inclusion relation, in other words, the trace Dirichlet form of regular subspace on $F$ is still a regular subspace of trace Dirichlet form of one-dimensional Brownian motion on $F$. Moreover we h…
We consider a Markov-modulated Brownian motion reflected to stay in a strip [0,B]. The stationary distribution of this process is known to have a simple form under some assumptions. We provide a short probabilistic argument leading to this result and explaining its simplicity. Moreover, this argument allows for generalizations including the distribution of the reflected process at an independent exponentially distributed epoch. Our second contribution concerns transient behavior of the reflected system. We identify the joint law of the processes t,X(t),J(t) at inverse local times.
A uniform dimensional result for normally reflected Brownian motion (RBM) in a large class of non-smooth domains is established. Exact Hausdorff dimensions for the boundary occupation time and the boundary trace of RBM are given. Extensions to stable-like jump processes and to symmetric reflecting diffusions are also mentioned.
We study boundary traces of shift-invariant diffusions: two-dimensional diffusions in the upper half-plane $\mathbb{R} \times [0, \infty)$ (or in $\mathbb{R} \times [0, R)$) invariant under horizontal translations. We prove that the corresponding trace processes are Lévy processes with completely monotone jumps, and, conversely, every Lévy process with completely monotone jumps is a boundary trace of some shift-invariant diffusion. Up to some natural transformations of space and time, this correspondence is bijective. We also reformulate this result in the language of additive functionals of t…
Known results show that the diameter $d_1$ of the trace of planar Brownian motion run for unit time satisfies $1.595 \leq \mathbb{E} d_1 \leq 2.507$. This note improves these bounds to $1.601 \leq \mathbb{E} d_1 \leq 2.355$. Simulations suggest that $\mathbb{E} d_1 \approx 1.99$.
Treebolic space is an analog of the Sol geometry, namely, it is the horocylic product of the hyperbolic upper half plane H and the homogeneous tree T with degree p+1 > 2, the latter seen as a one-complex. Let h be the Busemann function of T with respect to a fixed boundary point. Then for real q > 1 and integer p > 1, treebolic space HT(q,p) consists of all pairs (z=x+i y,w) in H x T with h(w) = log_{q} y. It can also be obtained by glueing together horziontal strips of H in a tree-like fashion. We explain the geometry and metric of HT and exhibit a locally compact group of isometries (a horoc…
The purpose of the paper is to find explicit formulas describing the joint distributions of the first hitting time and place for half-spaces of codimension one for a diffusion in $\R^{n+1}$, composed of one-dimensional Bessel process and independent n-dimensional Brownian motion. The most important argument is carried out for the two-dimensional situation. We show that this amounts to computation of distributions of various integral functionals with respect to a two-dimensional process with independent Bessel components. As a result, we provide a formula for the Poisson kernel of a half-space …
We provide a decomposition of the trace of the Brownian motion into a simple path and an independent Brownian soup of loops that intersect the simple path. More precisely, we prove that any subsequential scaling limit of the loop erased random walk is a simple path (a new result in three dimensions), which can be taken as the simple path of the decomposition. In three dimensions, we also prove that the Hausdorff dimension of any such subsequential scaling limit lies in $(1,\frac53]$. We conjecture that our decomposition characterizes uniquely the law of the simple path. If so, our results woul…
We obtain the Brownian net of Sun and Swart (2008) as the scaling limit of the paths traced out by a system of continuous (one-dimensional) space and time branching and coalescing random walks. This demonstrates a certain universality of the net, which we have not seen explored elsewhere. The walks themselves arise in a natural way as the ancestral lineages relating individuals in a sample from a biological population evolving according to the spatial Lambda-Fleming-Viot process. Our scaling reveals the effect, in dimension one, of spatial structure on the spread of a selectively advantageous …
Treebolic space HT(q,p) is a key example of a strip complex in the sense of Bendikov, Saloff-Coste, Salvatori, and Woess [Adv. Math. 226 (2011), 992-1055]. It is an analog of the Sol geometry, namely, it is a horocylic product of the hyperbolic upper half plane with a "stretching" parameter q and the homogeneous tree T with vertex degree p+1 < 2, the latter seen as a one-complex. In a previous paper [arXiv:1212.6151, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana, in print] we have explored the metric structure and isometry group of that space. Relying on the analysis on strip complexes, a family of natural Laplaci…
In this work, we prove a version of Hörmander's theorem for a stochastic evolution equation driven by a trace-class fractional Brownian motion with Hurst exponent $\frac{1}{2} < H < 1$ and an analytic semigroup on a given separable Hilbert space. In contrast to the classical finite-dimensional case, the Jacobian operator in typical solutions of parabolic stochastic PDEs is not invertible which causes a severe difficulty in expressing the Malliavin matrix in terms of an adapted process. Under a Hörmander's bracket condition and some algebraic constraints on the vector fields combined with the r…
The regular Dirichlet extension is the dual concept of regular Dirichlet subspace. The main purpose of this paper is to characterize all the regular Dirichlet extensions of one-dimensional Brownian motion and to explore their structures. It is shown that every regular Dirichlet extension of one-dimensional Brownian motion may essentially decomposed into at most countable disjoint invariant intervals and an $\mathcal{E}$-polar set relative to this regular Dirichlet extension. On each invariant interval the regular Dirichlet extension is characterized uniquely by a scale function in a given clas…
We prove the cut-off phenomenon in total variation distance for the Brownian motions traced on the classical symmetric spaces of compact type, that is to say: (1) the classical simple compact Lie groups: special orthogonal groups, special unitary groups and compact symplectic groups; (2) the real, complex and quaternionic Grassmannian varieties (including the real spheres and complex or quaternionic projective spaces); (3) the spaces of structures: SU(n)/SO(n), SO(2n)/U(n), SU(2n)/USp(n), and USp(n)/U(n). In each case, we give explicit lower bounds for the total variation distance DTV(mu_t,Haa…
We consider a branching-selection system of particles on the real line that evolves according to the following rules: each particle moves according to a Brownian motion during an exponential lifetime and then splits into two new particles and, when a particle is at a distance $L$ of the highest particle, it dies without splitting. This model has been introduced by Brunet, Derrida, Mueller and Munier in the physics literature and is called the $L$-branching Brownian motion. We show that the position of the system grows linearly at a velocity $v_L$ almost surely and we compute the asymptotic beh…
This paper presents some results on the expected exit time of Brownian motion from simply connected domains in $\CC$. We indicate a way in which Brownian motion sees the identity function and the Koebe function as the smallest and largest analytic functions, respectively, in the Schlicht class. We also give a sharpening of a result of McConnell's concerning the moments of exit times of Schlicht domains. We then show how a simple formula for expected exit time can be applied in a series of examples. Included in the examples given are the expected exit times from given points of a cardioid and r…
In this paper we study the behaviour in time of the trace (the partition function) of the heat semigroup associated with symmetric stable processes in domains of $\Rd$. In particular, we show that for domains with the so called {\it{$R$-smoothness}} property the second terms in the asymptotic as $t\to 0$ involves the surface area of the domain, just as in the case of Brownian motion.
We show that the Laplace transforms of traces of words in independant unitary Brownian motions converge towards an analytic function on a non trivial disc. This results allow to study asymptotics of Wilson loops under the unitary Yang-Mills measure on the plane. The limiting objects obtained are shown to be characterized by equations analog to Schwinger-Dyson's ones, named here after Makeenko and Migdal.
We consider a two parameter family of unitarily invariant diffusion processes on the general linear group $\mathbb{GL}_N$ of $N\times N$ invertible matrices, that includes the standard Brownian motion as well as the usual unitary Brownian motion as special cases. We prove that all such processes have Gaussian fluctuations in high dimension with error of order $O(1/N)$; this is in terms of the finite dimensional distributions of the process under a large class of test functions known as trace polynomials. We give an explicit characterization of the covariance of the Gaussian fluctuation field, …
Questions regarding the continuity in $κ$ of the $SLE_κ$ traces and maps appear very naturally in the study of SLE. In order to study the first question, we consider a natural coupling of SLE traces: for different values of $κ$ we use the same Brownian motion. It is very natural to assume that with probability one, $SLE_κ$ depends continuously on $κ$. It is rather easy to show that $SLE$ is continuous in the Carathéodory sense, but showing that $SLE$ traces are continuous in the uniform sense is much harder. In this note we show that for a given sequence $κ_j\toκ\in (0, 8/3)$, for almost every…
It is shown that the second term in the asymptotic expansion as $t\to 0$ of the trace of the semigroup of symmetric stable processes (fractional powers of the Laplacian) of order $α$, for any $0<α<2$, in Lipschitz domains is given by the surface area of the boundary of the domain. This brings the asymptotics for the trace of stable processes in domains of Euclidean space on par with those of Brownian motion (the Laplacian), as far as boundary smoothness is concerned.
We ask the question "when will natural selection on a gene in a spatially structured population cause a detectable trace in the patterns of genetic variation observed in the contemporary population?". We focus on the situation in which 'neighbourhood size', that is the effective local population density, is small. The genealogy relating individuals in a sample from the population is embedded in a spatial version of the ancestral selection graph and through applying a diffusive scaling to this object we show that whereas in dimensions at least three, selection is barely impeded by the spatial s…
We obtain bounds for the expected loss of torsional rigidity of a cylinder $Ω_L=(-L/2,L/2) \times Ω\subset \R^3$ of length $L$ due to a Brownian fracture that starts at a random point in $Ω_L,$ and runs until the first time it exits $Ω_L$. These bounds are expressed in terms of the geometry of the cross-section $Ω\subset \R^2$. It is shown that if $Ω$ is a disc with radius $R$, then in the limit as $L \rightarrow \infty$ the expected loss of torsional rigidity equals $cR^5$ for some $c\in (0,\infty)$. We derive bounds for $c$ in terms of the expected Newtonian capacity of the trace of a Browni…
We prove that the free Boltzmann quadrangulation with simple boundary and fixed perimeter, equipped with its graph metric, natural area measure, and the path which traces its boundary converges in the scaling limit to the free Boltzmann Brownian disk. The topology of convergence is the so-called Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov-uniform (GHPU) topology, the natural analog of the Gromov-Hausdorff topology for curve-decorated metric measure spaces. From this we deduce that a random quadrangulation of the sphere decorated by a $2l$-step self-avoiding loop converges in law in the GHPU topology to the ran…
Consider a large system of $N$ Brownian motions in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with some non-degenerate initial measure on some fixed time interval $[0,β]$ with symmetrised initial-terminal condition. That is, for any $i$, the terminal location of the $i$-th motion is affixed to the initial point of the $σ(i)$-th motion, where $σ$ is a uniformly distributed random permutation of $1,...,N$. Such systems play an important role in quantum physics in the description of Boson systems at positive temperature $1/β$. In this paper, we describe the large-N behaviour of the empirical path measure (the mean of the Di…
