Consider a large system of $N$ Brownian motions in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with some non-degenerate initial measure on some fixed time interval $[0,β]$ with symmetrised initial-terminal condition. That is, for any $i$, the terminal location of the $i$-th motion is affixed to the initial point of the $σ(i)$-th motion, where $σ$ is a uniformly distributed random permutation of $1,...,N$. Such systems play an important role in quantum physics in the description of Boson systems at positive temperature $1/β$.
In this paper, we describe the large-N behaviour of the empirical path measure (the mean of the Dirac measures in the $N$ paths) and of the mean of the normalised occupation measures of the $N$ motions in terms of large deviations principles. The rate functions are given as variational formulas involving certain entropies and Fenchel-Legendre transforms. Consequences are drawn for asymptotic independence statements and laws of large numbers.
In the special case related to quantum physics, our rate function for the occupation measures turns out to be equal to the well-known Donsker-Varadhan rate function for the occupation measures of one motion in the limit of diverging time. This enables us to prove a simple formula for the large-N asymptotic of the symmetrised trace of ${\rm e}^{-β\mathcal{H}_N}$, where $\mathcal{H}_N$ is an $N$-particle Hamilton operator in a trap.
In this paper we prove a Large Deviation Principle for the sequence of symmetrised empirical measures $\frac{1}{n} \sum_{i=1}^{n} δ_{(X^n_i,X^n_{σ_n(i)})}$ where $σ_n$ is a random permutation and $((X_i^n)_{1 \leq i \leq n})_{n \geq 1}$ is a triangular array of random variables with suitable properties. As an application we show how this result allows to improve the Large Deviation Principles for symmetrised initial-terminal conditions bridge processes recently established by Adams, Dorlas and König.
We study large deviations principles for $ N $ random processes on the lattice $ \Z^d $ with finite time horizon $ [0,β] $ under a symmetrised measure where all initial and terminal points are uniformly given by a random permutation. That is, given a permutation $ σ$ of $ N $ elements and a vector $ (x_1,...,x_N) $ of $ N $ initial points we let the random processes terminate in the points $ (x_{σ(1)},...,x_{σ(N)}) $ and then sum over all possible permutations and initial points, weighted with an initial distribution. There is a two-level random mechanism and we prove two-level large deviation…
In this note, we present the closed form solution for the joint distribution of the range and terminal value of a Brownian motion. Based on this distribution we build a range scaled terminal value distribution and show the derivation steps of its density, further s-density. Finally, we sample the s-density from different groups of currency pairs and compare them with theoretical result.

I prove that every adapted Brownian bridge on a geodesically complete connected Riemannian manifold is a semimartingale including its terminal time, without any further assumptions on the geometry. In particular, it follows that every such process can be horizontally lifted to a smooth principal fiber bundle with connection, including its terminal time. The proof is based on a localized Hamilton-type gradient estimate by Arnaudon/Thalmaier.
In this paper, we first study one-dimensional quadratic backward stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motions ($G$-BSDEs) with unbounded terminal values. With the help of a $θ$-method of Briand and Hu [4] and nonlinear stochastic analysis techniques, we propose an approximation procedure to prove existence and uniqueness result when the generator is convex (or concave) and terminal value is of exponential moments of arbitrary order. Finally, we also establish the well-posedness of multi-dimensional G-BSDEs with diagonally quadratic generators.
In this paper we consider the random walk approximation of the solution of a Markovian BSDE whose terminal condition is a locally H{ö}lder continuous function of the Brownian motion. We state the rate of the L 2-convergence of the approximated solution to the true one. The proof relies in part on growth and smoothness properties of the solution u of the associated PDE. Here we improve existing results by showing some properties of the second derivative of u in space.
In this paper, we study the stability of the solutions of Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDE for short) with an almost surely finite random terminal time. More precisely, we are going to show that if $(W^n)$ is a sequence of scaled random walks or a sequence of martingales that converges to a Brownian motion $W$ and if $(τ^n)$ is a sequence of stopping times that converges to a stopping time $τ$, then the solution of the BSDE driven by $W^n$ with random terminal time $τ^n$ converges to the solution of the BSDE driven by $W$ with random terminal time $τ$.
In this paper, we study the existence and uniqueness of solutions to quadratic Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (QBSDEs for short) with rough driver and square integrable terminal condition. The main idea consists in using both Doss-Sussman and Zvonkin type transformations. As an application we study connection between QBSDEs and quadratic PDEs with rough drivers. We also obtain Backward Doubly SDEs and QBSDEs driven by Fractional Brownian with Hurst parameter greater than $\frac{1}{4}$ as particular cases of our QBSDEs with rough drivers. A probabilistic representation of a class of…
We consider a class of Backward Stochastic Differential Equations with superlinear driver process $f$ adapted to a filtration supporting at least a $d$ dimensional Brownian motion and a Poisson random measure on ${\mathbb R}^m- \{0\}.$ We consider the following class of terminal conditions $ξ_1 = \infty \cdot 1_{\{τ_1 \le T\}}$ where $τ_1$ is any stopping time with a bounded density in a neighborhood of $T$ and $ξ_2 = \infty \cdot 1_{A_T}$ where $A_t$, $t \in [0,T]$ is a decreasing sequence of events adapted to the filtration ${\mathcal F}_t$ that is continuous in probability at $T$. A special…
We analyze multidimensional BSDEs in a filtration that supports a Brownian motion and a Poisson random measure. Under a monotonicity assumption on the driver, the paper extends several results from the literature. We establish existence and uniqueness of solutions in $L^p$ provided that the generator and the terminal condition satisfy appropriate integrability conditions. The analysis is first carried out under a deterministic time horizon, and then generalized to random time horizons given by a stopping time with respect to the underlying filtration. Moreover, we provide a comparison principl…
We consider the $L_2$-regularity of solutions to backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) with Lipschitz generators driven by a Brownian motion and a Poisson random measure associated with a Lévy process $(X_t)_{t\in[0,T]}$. The terminal condition may be a Borel function of finitely many increments of the Lévy process which is not necessarily Lipschitz but only satisfies a fractional smoothness condition. The results are obtained by investigating how the special structure appearing in the chaos expansion of the terminal condition is inherited by the solution to the BSDE.
We solve a class of BSDE with a power function $f(y) = y^q$, $q > 1$, driving its drift and with the terminal boundary condition $ ξ= \infty \cdot \mathbf{1}_{B(m,r)^c}$ (for which $q > 2$ is assumed) or $ ξ= \infty \cdot \mathbf{1}_{B(m,r)}$, where $B(m,r)$ is the ball in the path space $C([0,T])$ of the underlying Brownian motion centered at the constant function $m$ and radius $r$. The solution involves the derivation and solution of a related heat equation in which $f$ serves as a reaction term and which is accompanied by singular and discontinuous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Although t…
In this paper, we study one-dimensional backward stochastic differential equation with jump under logarithmic growth assumption in the z-variable (|z|\sqrt{|\ln|z|}|) and an L^p terminal value (for a suitable p>2). We show the existence and the uniqueness of the solution when the noise is driven by a Brownian motion and an independent Poisson random measure. In addition, we highlight the connection of such BSDEs with stochastic optimal control problem, where we show the existence of an optimal strategy for the stochastic control problem.
For classical finite time horizon stopping problems driven by a Brownian motion \[V(t,x) = \sup_{t\leqτ\leq0}E_{(t,x)}[g(τ,W_τ)],\] we derive a new class of Fredholm type integral equations for the stopping set. For large problem classes of interest, we show by analytical arguments that the equation uniquely characterizes the stopping boundary of the problem. Regardless of the uniqueness, we use the representation to rigorously find the limit behavior of the stopping boundary close to the terminal time. Interestingly, it turns out that the leading-order coefficient is universal for wide classe…
In this article we establish a large deviation principle for the family {ν_ε:ε\in (0,1)} of distributions of the scaled stochastic processes {P_{-\log\sqrtε}Z_t}_{t\leq 1}, where (Z_t)_{t\in \lbrack 0,1]} is a square-integrable martingale over Brownian filtration and (P_t)_{t\geq 0} is the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup. The rate function is identified as well in terms of the Wiener-Itô chaos decomposition of the terminal value Z_{1}. The result is established by developing a continuity theorem for large deviations, together with two essential tools, the hypercontractivity of the Ornstein-Uhlenb…
Consider the motion of a Brownian particle in three dimensions, whose two spatial coordinates are standard Brownian motions with zero drift, and the remaining (unknown) spatial coordinate is a standard Brownian motion with a non-zero drift. Given that the position of the Brownian particle is being observed in real time, the problem is to detect as soon as possible and with minimal probabilities of the wrong terminal decisions, which spatial coordinate has the non-zero drift. We solve this problem in the Bayesian formulation, under any prior probabilities of the non-zero drift being in any of t…
We study the regularity properties of integro-partial differential equations of Hamilton-Jocobi-Bellman type with terminal condition, which can be interpreted through a stochastic control system, composed of a forward and a backward stochastic differential equation, both driven by a Brownian motion and a compensated Poisson random measure. More precisely, we prove that, under appropriate assumptions, the viscosity solution of such equations is jointly Lipschitz and jointly semiconcave in $(t,x)\inΔ\times\R^d$, for all compact time intervals $Δ$ excluding the terminal time. Our approach is base…
The article shows a bridge representation for the joint density of a system of stochastic processes consisting of a Brownian motion with drift coupled with a correlated fractional Brownian motion with drift. As a result, a small time approximation of the joint density is readily obtained by substituting the conditional expectation under the bridge measure by a single path: the modal-path from the initial point to the terminal point.
Given an initial (resp., terminal) probability measure $μ$ (resp., $ν$) on $\mathbb{R}^d$, we characterize those optimal stopping times $τ$ that maximize or minimize the functional $\mathbb{E} |B_0 - B_τ|^α$, $α> 0$, where $(B_t)_t$ is Brownian motion with initial law $B_0\sim μ$ and with final distribution --once stopped at $τ$-- equal to $B_τ\sim ν$. The existence of such stopping times is guaranteed by Skorohod-type embeddings of probability measures in "subharmoic order" into Brownian motion. This problem is equivalent to an optimal mass transport problem with certain constraints, namely t…
We consider the Brownian market model and the problem of expected utility maximization of terminal wealth. We, specifically, examine the problem of maximizing the utility of terminal wealth under the presence of transaction costs of a fund/agent investing in futures markets. We offer some preliminary remarks about statistical arbitrage strategies and we set the framework for futures markets, and introduce concepts such as margin, gearing and slippage. The setting is of discrete time, and the price evolution of the futures prices is modelled as discrete random sequence involving Ito's sums. We …
We discuss the class of "Quadratic Normal Volatility" models, which have drawn much attention in the financial industry due to their analytic tractability and flexibility. We characterize these models as the ones that can be obtained from stopped Brownian motion by a simple transformation and a change of measure that only depends on the terminal value of the stopped Brownian motion. This explains the existence of explicit analytic formulas for option prices within Quadratic Normal Volatility models in the academic literature.
We study the discrete-time approximation for solutions of quadratic forward back- ward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) driven by a Brownian motion and a jump process which could be dependent. Assuming that the generator has a quadratic growth w.r.t. the variable z and the terminal condition is bounded, we prove the convergence of the scheme when the number of time steps n goes to infinity. Our approach is based on the companion paper [15] and allows to get a convergence rate similar to that of schemes of Brownian FBSDEs.
In this paper, we study two optimisation settings for an insurance company, under the constraint that the terminal surplus at a deterministic and finite time $T$ follows a normal distribution with a given mean and a given variance. In both cases, the surplus of the insurance company is assumed to follow a Brownian motion with drift. First, we allow the insurance company to pay dividends and seek to maximise the expected discounted dividend payments or to minimise the ruin probability under the terminal distribution constraint. Here, we find explicit expressions for the optimal strategies in bo…
In this paper, we study multidimensional generalized BSDEs that have a monotone generator in a general filtration supporting a Brownian motion and an independent Poisson random measure. First, we prove the existence and uniqueness of $\mathbb{L}^p(p\ge2)$-solutions in the case of a fixed terminal time under suitable $p$-integrability conditions on the data. Then, we extend these results to the case of a random terminal time. Furthermore, we provide a comparison result in dimension $1$.
We consider the problem of maximising expected utility from terminal wealth in a semimartingale setting, where the semimartingale is written as a sum of a time-changed Brownian motion and a finite variation process. To solve this problem, we consider an initial enlargement of filtration and we derive change of variable formulas for stochastic integrals w.r.t. a time-changed Brownian motion. The change of variable formulas allow us to shift the problem to a maximisation problem under the enlarged filtration for models driven by a Brownian motion and a finite variation process. The latter could …
Let $W$ denote the Brownian motion. For any exponentially bounded Borel function $g$ the function $u$ defined by $u(t,x)= \mathbb{E}[g(x{+}σW_{T-t})]$ is the stochastic solution of the backward heat equation with terminal condition $g$. Let $u^n(t,x)$ denote the corresponding approximation generated by a simple symmetric random walk with time steps $2T/n$ and space steps $\pm σ\sqrt{T/n}$ where $σ> 0$. For quite irregular terminal conditions $g$ (bounded variation on compact intervals, locally Hölder continuous) the rate of convergence of $u^n(t,x)$ to $u(t,x)$ is considered, and also the beha…
This article focuses on the mathematical problem of existence and uniqueness of BSDE with a random terminal time which is a general random variable but not a stopping time, as it has been usually the case in the previous literature of BSDE with random terminal time. The main motivation of this work is a financial or actuarial problem of hedging of defaultable contingent claims or life insurance contracts, for which the terminal time is a default time or a death time, which are not stopping times. We have to use progressive enlargement of the Brownian filtration, and to solve the obtained BSDE …
We consider the problem of utility maximization with exponential preferences in a market where the traded stock/risky asset price is modelled as a Lévy-driven pure jump process (i.e. the driving Lévy process has no Brownian component). In this setting, we study the terminal utility optimization problem in the presence of a European contingent claim. We consider in detail the BSDE (backward stochastic differential equation) characterising the value function when using an exponential utility function. First we analyse the well-definedness of the generator. This leads to some conditions on the ma…
We study the $L^1$-approximation of the log-Heston SDE at the terminal time point by arbitrary methods that use an equidistant discretization of the driving Brownian motion. We show that such methods can achieve at most order $ \min \{ ν, \tfrac{1}{2} \}$, where $ν$ is the Feller index of the underlying CIR process. As a consequence Euler-type schemes are optimal for $ν\geq 1$, since they have convergence order $\tfrac{1}{2}-ε$ for $ε>0$ arbitrarily small in this regime.
Given an n-dimensional stochastic process X driven by P-Brownian motions and Poisson random measures, we seek the probability measure Q, with minimal relative entropy to P, such that the Q-expectations of some terminal and running costs are constrained. We prove existence and uniqueness of the optimal probability measure, derive the explicit form of the measure change, and characterise the optimal drift and compensator adjustments under the optimal measure. We provide an analytical solution for Value-at-Risk (quantile) constraints, discuss how to perturb a Brownian motion to have arbitrary var…
In classical optimal transport, the contributions of Benamou-Brenier and McCann regarding the time-dependent version of the problem are cornerstones of the field and form the basis for a variety of applications in other mathematical areas. We suggest a Benamou-Brenier type formulation of the martingale transport problem for given $d$-dimensional distributions $μ, ν$ in convex order. The unique solution $M^*=(M_t^*)_{t\in [0,1]}$ of this problem turns out to be a Markov-martingale which has several notable properties: In a specific sense it mimics the movement of a Brownian particle as closely …
Given a Markovian Brownian martingale $Z$, we build a process $X$ which is a martingale in its own filtration and satisfies $X_1 = Z_1$. We call $X$ a dynamic bridge, because its terminal value $Z_1$ is not known in advance. We compute explicitly its semimartingale decomposition under both its own filtration $\cF^X$ and the filtration $\cF^{X,Z}$ jointly generated by $X$ and $Z$. Our construction is heavily based on parabolic PDE's and filtering techniques. As an application, we explicitly solve an equilibrium model with insider trading, that can be viewed as a non-Gaussian generalization of B…
