We prove that the expectation of the range grows linearly, in both the quenched (for a.e. orientation) and annealed ("averaged") cases. Under fairly general assumptions, we give a sharp and explicit criterion for the asymptotic speed to be positive. As a consequence, situations with zero speed are revealed to occur. This weakens by first time the Kalikow ballistic assumption in mixing and proves finite moments of arbitrary order for the approximate regeneration time of \cite{CZ02}. We study rotor walks on transient graphs with initial rotor configuration sampled from the oriented wired uniform spanning forest (OWUSF) measure.
