A $K3$ surface with an ample divisor of self-intersection 2 is a double cover of the plane branched over a sextic curve. We conjecture that a similar statement holds for the generic couple $(X,H)$ with $X$ a deformation of $(K3)^{[n]}$ and $H$ an ample divisor of square 2 for Beauville's quadratic form. If $n=2$ then according to the conjecture $X$ is a double cover of a (singular) sextic 4-fold in $\PP^5$. It follows from the conjecture that a deformation of $(K3)^{[n]}$ carrying a divisor (not necessarily ample) of degree 2 has an anti-symplectic birational involution. We test the conjecture. In doing so we bump into some interesting geometry: examples of two anti-symplectic involutions generating an interesting dynamical system, a case of Strange duality and what is probably an involution on the moduli space of degree-2 quasi-polarized $(X,H)$ where $X$ is a deformation of $(K3)^{[2]}$.
This paper is concerned with non-symplectic involutions of irreducible symplectic manifolds of $K3^{[n]}$-type. We will give a criterion for deformation equivalence and use this to give a lattice-theoretic description of all deformation types. While moduli spaces of $K3^{[n]}$-type manifolds with non-symplectic involutions are not necessarily Hausdorff, we will construct quasi-projective moduli spaces for a certain well-behaved class of such pairs.
Symplectic involutions of a K3 surface are those involutions which leave the holomorphic 2-form invariant. We show, as predicted by Bloch's conjecture, that they act trivially on the CH_0 group of the K3 surface. This was recently proved by Huybrechts and Kemeny for one of the three types of symplectic involutions.
We study non-symplectic involutions on irreducible symplectic manifolds of K3^{[2]}-type with 19 parameters, which is the second largest possible. We classify the conjugacy classes of cohomological representations into four different types and show that there are at most five deformation types, two of which are given by natural involutions and their flops. Next, we give a geometric realisation of one of the new types using moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces. The geometry of the manifold and the new involution is described in detail.
Let X be a holomorphic symplectic fourfold such that b_2=23 and i a symplectic involution of X . The fixed locus F of i is a smooth symplectic submanifold of X; we show that F contains at least 12 isolated points and 1 smooth surface. We conjecture that F is made of 28 isolated fixed points and 1 K3 surface and we provide evidences for the conjecture in some examples, as the Hilbert scheme of a K3 surface, the Fano variety of a cubic in P^5 and the double cover of an EPW sextic.
K3-surfaces with antisymplectic involution and compatible symplectic actions of finite groups are considered. In this situation actions of large finite groups of symplectic transformations are shown to arise via double covers of Del Pezzo surfaces. A complete classification of K3-surfaces with maximal symplectic symmetry is obtained.
We study irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds deformation equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on a $K3$ surface and admitting a non-symplectic involution. We classify the possible discriminant forms of the invariant and anti-invariant lattice for the action of the involution on cohomology, and explicitly describe the lattices in the cases where the invariant has small rank. We also give a modular description of all $d$-dimensional families of manifolds of $K3^{[n]}$-type with a non-symplectic involution for $d\geq 19$ and $n\leq 5$, and provide examples arising as moduli spaces of …
In the context of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds, we say that (anti)holomorphic (anti)symplectic involutions are brane involutions since their fixed point locus is a brane in the physicists' language, i.e. a submanifold which is either complex or lagrangian submanifold with respect to each of the three Kähler structures of the associated hyperkähler structure. Starting from a brane involution on a K3 or abelian surface, one can construct a natural brane involution on its moduli space of sheaves. We study these natural involutions and their relation with the Fourier--Mukai transfo…
Let X be a Hyperkähler variety deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square on a K3 surface and let f be an involution preserving the symplectic form. We prove that the fixed locus of f consists of 28 isolated points and 1 K3 surface, moreover the anti-invariant lattice of the induced involution on H^2(X,Z) is isomorphic to E_8(-2). Finally we prove that any couple consisting of one such variety and a symplectic involution on it can be deformed into a couple consisting of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface and the involution induced by a Nikulin involution on the K3 surface.
Let X be a holomorphic symplectic manifold, of dimension divisible by 4, and s an antisymplectic involution of X . The fixed locus F of s is a Lagrangian submanifold of X ; we show that its Â-genus is 1. As an application, we determine all possibilities for the Chern numbers of F when X is a deformation of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface.
This note concerns hyperkähler fourfolds $X$ having a non-symplectic involution $ι$. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict the way $ι$ should act on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$. The main result is a verification of this prediction for Fano varieties of lines on certain cubic fourfolds. This has consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient $X/ι$.
In this paper we complete the classification of the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which admit a non-symplectic involution acting trivially on the Néron--Severi group. We use the geometric method introduced by Oguiso and moreover we provide a geometric construction of the fibrations classified. If the non-symplectic involution fixes at least one curve of genus 1, we relate all the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surface with either elliptic fibrations or generalized conic bundles on rational elliptic surfaces. This description allows us to write the Weierstrass equations of the elliptic fibr…
There are three types of involutions on a cubic fourfold; two of anti-symplectic type, and one symplectic. Here we show that cubics with involutions exhibit the full range of behaviour in relation to rationality conjectures. Namely, we show a general cubic fourfold with symplectic involution has no associated K3 surface and is conjecturely irrational. In contrast, we show a cubic fourfold with a particular anti-symplectic involution has an associated K3, and is in fact rational. We show such a cubic is contained in the intersection of all non-empty Hassett divisors; we call such a cubic Hasset…
This article is about hyperkähler fourfolds $X$ admitting a non-symplectic involution $ι$. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict the way $ι$ should act on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$. The main result is a verification of this prediction for Fano varieties of lines on certain cubic fourfolds. This has some interesting consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient $X/ι$.
We study the boundary behavior of the invariant of $K3^{[2]}$-type manifolds with antisymplectic involution, which we obtained using equivariant analytic torsion. We show the algebraicity of the singularity of the invariant by using the asymptotic of equivariant Quillen metrics and equivariant $L^2$-metrics. We prove that, in some cases, the invariant coincides with Yoshikawa's invariant for 2-elementary K3 surfaces. Hence, in these cases, our invariant is expressed as the Petersson norm of a Borcherds product and a Siegel modular form.
We prove the so-called Unitary Isotropy Theorem, a result on isotropy of a unitary involution. The analogous previously known results on isotropy of orthogonal and symplectic involutions as well as on hyperbolicity of orthogonal, symplectic, and unitary involutions are formal consequences of this theorem. A component of the proof is a detailed study of the quasi-split unitary grassmannians.
We study anti-holomorphic involutions of the moduli space of principal $G$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group. These involutions are defined by fixing anti-holomorphic involutions on both $X$ and $G$. We analyze the fixed point locus in the moduli space and their relation with representations of the orbifold fundamental group of $X$ equipped with the anti-holomorphic involution. We also study the relation with branes. This generalizes work by Biswas--Garc\'ıa-Prada--Hurtubise and Baraglia--Schaposnik.
Classification of real K3 surfaces X with a non-symplectic involution τis considered. For some exactly defined and one of the weakest possible type of degeneration (giving the very reach discriminant), we show that the connected component of their moduli is defined by the isomorphism class of the action of τand the anti-holomorphic involution ϕin the homology lattice. (There are very few similar cases known.) For their classification we apply invariants of integral lattice involutions with conditions which were developed by the first author in 1983. As a particular case, we describe connected …
We study K3 surfaces with a pair of commuting involutions that are non-symplectic with respect to two anti-commuting complex structures that are determined by a hyper-Kähler metric. One motivation for this paper is the role of such $\mathbb{Z}^2_2$-actions for the construction of $G_2$-manifolds. We find a large class of smooth K3 surfaces with such pairs of involutions, but we also pay special attention to the case that the K3 surface has ADE-singularities. Therefore, we introduce a special class of non-symplectic involutions that are suitable for explicit calculations and find 320 examples o…
We survey recent results on ample cones and birational contractions of holomorphic symplectic varieties of K3 type, focusing on explicit constructions and concrete examples.
We classify K3 surfaces with a non-symplectic finite automorphism of high order. It is shown that such an automorphism cannot be of order 60, and for each of the orders 38, 44, 48, 50, 54 and 66, there exists a unique K3 surface with such an automorphism.
In the definition of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds the condition of being simply connected can be replaced by vanishing irregularity. We discuss finite quotients X of complex tori where the space of reflexive 2-forms is generated by a holomorphic symplectic form, and their Lagrangian fibrations. Neither X nor the base can be smooth unless X is a 2-torus.
We prove that the integral Hodge conjecture holds for 1-cycles on irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties of K3 type and of Generalized Kummer type. As an application, we give a new proof of the integral Hodge conjecture for cubic fourfolds.
We analyze the ample and moving cones of holomorphic symplectic manifolds, in light of recent advances in the minimal model program. As an application, we establish a numerical criterion for ampleness of divisors on fourfolds deformation-equivalent to punctual Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces.
We investigate the stability of fibers of coisotropic fibrations on holomorphic symplectic manifolds and generalize Voisin's result on Lagrangian subvarieties to this framework. We present applications to the moduli space of holomorphic symplectic manifolds which are deformations equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on a $K3$ surface or to generalized Kummer manifolds.
We study holomorphic symplectic manifolds which are fibred by abelian varieties. This structure is a higher dimensional analogue of an elliptic fibration on a K3 surface. We investigate when a holomorphic symplectic manifold is fibred in this way, and are led to several natural conjectures. We then study the geometry of these fibrations. The expectation is that this point of view will prove useful in understanding holomorphic symplectic manifolds, and possibly lead to a classification.
We construct quasi-projective moduli spaces of $K$-general lattice polarized irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. Moreover, we study their Baily--Borel compactification and investigate a relation between one-dimensional boundary components and equivalence classes of rational Lagrangian fibrations defined on mirror manifolds.
We study the birational geometry of irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties arising as varieties of lines of general cubic fourfolds containing a cubic scroll. We compute the ample and moving cones, and exhibit a birational automorphism of infinite order explaining the chamber decomposition of the moving cone.
We study families of rational curves on certain irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties. In particular, we prove that any ample linear system on a projective holomorphic symplectic variety of K3[n]-type contains a uniruled divisor. As an application we provide a generalization of the Beauville-Voisin result on the Chow group of 0-cycles on such varieties.
We prove the existence of a universal family over every component of the moduli space of marked irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. The analogous result follows for the Teichmuller spaces.
We generalize Nikulin's and Dolgachev's lattice-theoretical mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces to lattice polarized higher dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. In the case of fourfolds of $K3^{\left[2\right]}-$type we then describe mirror families of polarized fourfolds and we give an example with mirror non-symplectic involutions.
We determine the Mori cone of holomorphic symplectic varieties deformation equivalent to the punctual Hilbert scheme on a K3 surface. Our description is given in terms of Markman's extended Hodge lattice.
The Beauville-Bogomolov lattice is computed for a simplest singular symplectic manifold of dimension 4, obtained as a partial desingularization of the quotient $S^{[2]}/ι$, where $S^{[2]}$ is the Hilbert square of a K3 surface $S$ and $ι$ is a symplectic involution on it. This result applies, in particular, to the singular symplectic manifolds of dimension 4, constructed by Markushevich-Tikhomirov as compactifications of families of Prym varieties of a linear system of curves on a K3 surface with an anti-symplectic involution.
In this paper we analyse the birational geometry of O'Grady ten dimensional manifolds, giving a characterisation of Kaehler classes and lagrangian fibrations. Moreover, we study symplectic compactifications of intermediate jacobian fibrations of smooth cubic fourfolds.
A holomorphic torsion invariant of K3 surfaces with involution was introduced by the second-named author. In this paper, we completely determine its structure as an automorphic function on the moduli space of such K3 surfaces. On every component of the moduli space, it is expressed as the product of an explicit Borcherds lift and a classical Siegel modular form. We also introduce its twisted version. We prove its modularity and a certain uniqueness of the modular form corresponding to the twisted holomorphic torsion invariant. This is used to study an equivariant analogue of Borcherds' conject…
We prove that the Kodaira dimension of the n-fold universal family of lattice-polarized holomorphic symplectic varieties with dominant and generically finite period map stabilizes to the moduli number when n is sufficiently large. Then we study the transition of Kodaira dimension explicitly, from negative to nonnegative, for known explicit families of polarized symplectic varieties. In particular, we determine the exact transition point in the cases of Beauville-Donagi and Debarre-Voisin, where the Borcherds Phi_{12} form plays a crucial role.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an automorphism of the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface (non necessarily algebraic) to be induced by an automorphism of the surface. We prove furthermore that the group of birational transformations of a projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold is finitely generated.
Moduli spaces of polarised (with fixed polarisation type) irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds deformation equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on $K3$ surfaces are not connected in general and A. Apostolov counted the number of their components. We extend Apostolov's results to the case of manifolds deformation equivalent to generalised Kummer varieties.
We regard the pre-hyperkähler structure on the moduli space of framed flags of sheaves $\mathcal{F}(1,3,1)$ on the projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$ via an adaptation of the ADHM construction of framed sheaves. Then, we study and categorize the degenerate points of the holomorphic pre-symplectic form presented in the moduli space.
We generalize Voisin's theorem on deformations of pairs of a symplectic manifold and a Lagrangian submanifold to the case of Lagrangian normal crossing subvarieties. Partial results are obtained for arbitrary Lagrangian subvarieties. We apply our results to the study of singular fibers of Lagrangian fibrations.
We study the deformations of a holomorphic symplectic manifold $M$, not necessarily compact, over a formal ring. We show (under some additional, but mild, assumptions on $M$) that the coarse deformation space exists and is smooth, finite-dimensional and naturally embedded into $H^2(M)$. For a holomorphic symplectic manifold $M$ which satisfies $H^1(M,{\cal O}_M) = H^2(M,{\cal O}_M)=0$, the coarse moduli of formal deformations is isomorphic to $\Spec\C[[t_1, ..., t_n]]$, where $t_1$, ... $t_n$ are coordinates in $H^2(M)$. This revised version contains one minor improvement: exposition in Subsec…
We use twisted Fourier-Mukai transforms to study the relation between an abelian fibration on a holomorphic symplectic manifold and its dual fibration. Our reasoning leads to an equivalence between the derived category of coherent sheaves on one space and the derived category of twisted sheaves on the other space.
We propose a general framework governing the intersection properties of extremal rays of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds under the Beauville-Bogomolov form. Our main thesis is that extremal rays associated to Lagrangian projective subspaces control the behavior of the cone of curves. We explore implications of this philosophy for examples like Hilbert schemes of points on K3 surfaces and generalized Kummer varieties. We also collect evidence supporting our conjectures in specific cases.
Let $Y$ be a smooth hypersurface in a projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold $X$ of dimension $2n$. The characteristic foliation $F$ is the kernel of the symplectic form restricted to $Y$. Assume that $X$ is equipped with a Lagrangian fibration $π:X\to B$ and $Y=π^{-1}D$, where $D$ is a hypersurface in $B$. It is easy to see that the leaves of $F$ are contained in the fibers of $π$. We prove that a very general leaf is Zariski dense in a fiber of $π$.
Rational curves on Hilbert schemes of points on $K3$ surfaces and generalised Kummer manifolds are constructed by using Brill-Noether theory on nodal curves on the underlying surface. It turns out that all wall divisors can be obtained, up to isometry, as dual divisors to such rational curves. The locus covered by the rational curves is then described, thus exhibiting algebraically coisotropic subvarieties that deform to general small deformations of the manifold. This provides strong evidence for a conjecture by Voisin concerning the Chow ring of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. …
