In this paper we describe the fixed locus of a symplectic involution on a hyperkähler manifold of type $K3^{[n]}$ or of Kummer $n$ type. We prove that the fixed locus consists of finitely many copies of Hilbert schemes of $K3$ surfaces of lower dimensions and isolated fixed points.
We classify non symplectic prime order automorphisms and all finite order symplectic automorphism groups of generalised Kummer fourfolds using lattice theory and recent results on ample cones and monodromy groups. We study various geometric realisations of the automorphisms obtained in the classification. In the case of higher dimensional generalised Kummers, we provide full results for finite symplectic automorphisms groups and we sketch the classification for prime order non-symplectic groups.
Moduli spaces of polarised (with fixed polarisation type) irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds deformation equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on $K3$ surfaces are not connected in general and A. Apostolov counted the number of their components. We extend Apostolov's results to the case of manifolds deformation equivalent to generalised Kummer varieties.
Nikulin proved that the isometries induced on the second cohomology group of a K3 surface $X$ by a finite abelian group $G$ of symplectic automorphisms are essentially unique. Moreover he computed the discriminant of the sublattice of $H^2(X, \Z)$ which is fixed by the isometries induced by $G$. However for certain groups these discriminants are not the same of those found for explicit examples. Here we describe Kummer surfaces for which this phenomena happens and we explain the difference.
In the first part of this paper we give a survey of classical results on Kummer surfaces with Picard number 17 from the point of view of lattice theory. We prove ampleness properties for certain divisors on Kummer surfaces and we use them to describe projective models of Kummer surfaces of (1,d)-polarized Abelian surfaces for d=1,2,3. As a consequence we prove that in these cases the Néron--Severi group can be generated by lines. In the second part of the paper we use Kummer surfaces to obtain results on K3 surfaces with a symplectic action of the group (\Z/2\Z)^4. In particular we describe th…
This paper classifies Enriques surfaces whose K3-cover is a fixed Picard-general Jacobian Kummer surface. There are exactly 31 such surfaces. We describe the free involutions which give these Enriques surfaces explicitly. As a biproduct, we show that Aut(X) is generated by elements of order 2, which is an improvement of the theorem of S. Kondo.
We describe the integral cohomology of the Generalized Kummer fourfold giving an explicit basis, using Hilbert scheme cohomology and tools developed by Hassett and Tschinkel. Then we apply our results to a IHS variety with singularities, obtained by a partial resolution of the Generalized Kummer quotiented by a symplectic involution. We calculate the Beauville--Bogomolov form of this new variety, presenting the first example of such a form that is odd.
This paper is concerned with non-symplectic involutions of irreducible symplectic manifolds of $K3^{[n]}$-type. We will give a criterion for deformation equivalence and use this to give a lattice-theoretic description of all deformation types. While moduli spaces of $K3^{[n]}$-type manifolds with non-symplectic involutions are not necessarily Hausdorff, we will construct quasi-projective moduli spaces for a certain well-behaved class of such pairs.
We show that a Hilbert scheme of conics on a Fano fourfold double cover of $\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2$ ramified along a divisor of bidegree $(2,2)$ admits a $\mathbb{P}^1$-fibration with base being a hyper-Kähler fourfold. We investigate the geometry of such fourfolds relating them with degenerated EPW cubes, with elements in the Brauer groups of $K3$ surfaces of degree $2$, and with Verra threefolds studied in [Ver04]. These hyper-Kähler fourfolds admit natural involutions and complete the classification of geometric realizations of anti-symplectic involutions on hyper-Kähler $4$-folds o…
Symplectic involutions of a K3 surface are those involutions which leave the holomorphic 2-form invariant. We show, as predicted by Bloch's conjecture, that they act trivially on the CH_0 group of the K3 surface. This was recently proved by Huybrechts and Kemeny for one of the three types of symplectic involutions.
We study non-symplectic involutions on irreducible symplectic manifolds of K3^{[2]}-type with 19 parameters, which is the second largest possible. We classify the conjugacy classes of cohomological representations into four different types and show that there are at most five deformation types, two of which are given by natural involutions and their flops. Next, we give a geometric realisation of one of the new types using moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces. The geometry of the manifold and the new involution is described in detail.
Let X be a holomorphic symplectic fourfold such that b_2=23 and i a symplectic involution of X . The fixed locus F of i is a smooth symplectic submanifold of X; we show that F contains at least 12 isolated points and 1 smooth surface. We conjecture that F is made of 28 isolated fixed points and 1 K3 surface and we provide evidences for the conjecture in some examples, as the Hilbert scheme of a K3 surface, the Fano variety of a cubic in P^5 and the double cover of an EPW sextic.
K3-surfaces with antisymplectic involution and compatible symplectic actions of finite groups are considered. In this situation actions of large finite groups of symplectic transformations are shown to arise via double covers of Del Pezzo surfaces. A complete classification of K3-surfaces with maximal symplectic symmetry is obtained.
We study irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds deformation equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on a $K3$ surface and admitting a non-symplectic involution. We classify the possible discriminant forms of the invariant and anti-invariant lattice for the action of the involution on cohomology, and explicitly describe the lattices in the cases where the invariant has small rank. We also give a modular description of all $d$-dimensional families of manifolds of $K3^{[n]}$-type with a non-symplectic involution for $d\geq 19$ and $n\leq 5$, and provide examples arising as moduli spaces of …
Let X be a Hyperkähler variety deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square on a K3 surface and let f be an involution preserving the symplectic form. We prove that the fixed locus of f consists of 28 isolated points and 1 K3 surface, moreover the anti-invariant lattice of the induced involution on H^2(X,Z) is isomorphic to E_8(-2). Finally we prove that any couple consisting of one such variety and a symplectic involution on it can be deformed into a couple consisting of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface and the involution induced by a Nikulin involution on the K3 surface.
In the context of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds, we say that (anti)holomorphic (anti)symplectic involutions are brane involutions since their fixed point locus is a brane in the physicists' language, i.e. a submanifold which is either complex or lagrangian submanifold with respect to each of the three Kähler structures of the associated hyperkähler structure. Starting from a brane involution on a K3 or abelian surface, one can construct a natural brane involution on its moduli space of sheaves. We study these natural involutions and their relation with the Fourier--Mukai transfo…
Let X be a holomorphic symplectic manifold, of dimension divisible by 4, and s an antisymplectic involution of X . The fixed locus F of s is a Lagrangian submanifold of X ; we show that its Â-genus is 1. As an application, we determine all possibilities for the Chern numbers of F when X is a deformation of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface.
In view of a potential interpretation of the role of the Mathieu group M_24 in the context of strings compactified on K3 surfaces, we develop techniques to combine groups of symmetries from different K3 surfaces to larger 'overarching' symmetry groups. We construct a bijection between the full integral homology lattice of K3 and the Niemeier lattice of type (A_1)^24, which is simultaneously compatible with the finite symplectic automorphism groups of all Kummer surfaces lying on an appropriate path in moduli space connecting the square and the tetrahedral Kummer surfaces. The Niemeier lattice …
This note concerns hyperkähler fourfolds $X$ having a non-symplectic involution $ι$. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict the way $ι$ should act on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$. The main result is a verification of this prediction for Fano varieties of lines on certain cubic fourfolds. This has consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient $X/ι$.
In this paper we complete the classification of the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which admit a non-symplectic involution acting trivially on the Néron--Severi group. We use the geometric method introduced by Oguiso and moreover we provide a geometric construction of the fibrations classified. If the non-symplectic involution fixes at least one curve of genus 1, we relate all the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surface with either elliptic fibrations or generalized conic bundles on rational elliptic surfaces. This description allows us to write the Weierstrass equations of the elliptic fibr…
There are three types of involutions on a cubic fourfold; two of anti-symplectic type, and one symplectic. Here we show that cubics with involutions exhibit the full range of behaviour in relation to rationality conjectures. Namely, we show a general cubic fourfold with symplectic involution has no associated K3 surface and is conjecturely irrational. In contrast, we show a cubic fourfold with a particular anti-symplectic involution has an associated K3, and is in fact rational. We show such a cubic is contained in the intersection of all non-empty Hassett divisors; we call such a cubic Hasset…
We study K3 surfaces with a pair of commuting involutions that are non-symplectic with respect to two anti-commuting complex structures that are determined by a hyper-Kähler metric. One motivation for this paper is the role of such $\mathbb{Z}^2_2$-actions for the construction of $G_2$-manifolds. We find a large class of smooth K3 surfaces with such pairs of involutions, but we also pay special attention to the case that the K3 surface has ADE-singularities. Therefore, we introduce a special class of non-symplectic involutions that are suitable for explicit calculations and find 320 examples o…
We classify K3 surfaces with a non-symplectic finite automorphism of high order. It is shown that such an automorphism cannot be of order 60, and for each of the orders 38, 44, 48, 50, 54 and 66, there exists a unique K3 surface with such an automorphism.
A $K3$ surface with an ample divisor of self-intersection 2 is a double cover of the plane branched over a sextic curve. We conjecture that a similar statement holds for the generic couple $(X,H)$ with $X$ a deformation of $(K3)^{[n]}$ and $H$ an ample divisor of square 2 for Beauville's quadratic form. If $n=2$ then according to the conjecture $X$ is a double cover of a (singular) sextic 4-fold in $\PP^5$. It follows from the conjecture that a deformation of $(K3)^{[n]}$ carrying a divisor (not necessarily ample) of degree 2 has an anti-symplectic birational involution. We test the conjecture…
We give two characterizations of Jacobians of curves with involution having fixed points in the framework of two particular cases of Welter's trisecant conjecture. The geometric form of each of these characterizations is the statement that such Jacobians are exactly those containing a shifted Abelian subvariety whose image under the Kummer map is orthogonal to an explicitly given vector.
This article is about hyperkähler fourfolds $X$ admitting a non-symplectic involution $ι$. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict the way $ι$ should act on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$. The main result is a verification of this prediction for Fano varieties of lines on certain cubic fourfolds. This has some interesting consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient $X/ι$.
We shall give an example of irreducible symplectic manifolds X and Y which are not bimeromorphic, but have the same periods in the second cohomologies. More explicitly, X and Y are generalized Kummer varieties of dim 4 for a general complex torus T of dim 2 and its dual torus T^*. A key result is an observation of Shioda for the periods of T and T^*. As a concluding remark, we shall discuss the difference between our case and Kummer surfaces.
We provide a method, based on Nikulin's lattice gluing techniques, which identifies the symplectic automorphisms of Kummer surfaces as permutation groups on 24 elements preserving the Golay code. In other words, we explicitly realise these symplectic automorphism groups as subgroups of the Mathieu group M_24. The example of the tetrahedral Kummer surface is treated in detail, confirming the existence proofs of Mukai and Kondo, that its group of symplectic automorphisms is a subgroup of one of eleven subgroups of the sporadic group known as Mathieu group M_23. Kondo's lattice construction, whic…
We prove the so-called Unitary Isotropy Theorem, a result on isotropy of a unitary involution. The analogous previously known results on isotropy of orthogonal and symplectic involutions as well as on hyperbolicity of orthogonal, symplectic, and unitary involutions are formal consequences of this theorem. A component of the proof is a detailed study of the quasi-split unitary grassmannians.
We study the boundary behavior of the invariant of $K3^{[2]}$-type manifolds with antisymplectic involution, which we obtained using equivariant analytic torsion. We show the algebraicity of the singularity of the invariant by using the asymptotic of equivariant Quillen metrics and equivariant $L^2$-metrics. We prove that, in some cases, the invariant coincides with Yoshikawa's invariant for 2-elementary K3 surfaces. Hence, in these cases, our invariant is expressed as the Petersson norm of a Borcherds product and a Siegel modular form.
Classification of real K3 surfaces X with a non-symplectic involution τis considered. For some exactly defined and one of the weakest possible type of degeneration (giving the very reach discriminant), we show that the connected component of their moduli is defined by the isomorphism class of the action of τand the anti-holomorphic involution ϕin the homology lattice. (There are very few similar cases known.) For their classification we apply invariants of integral lattice involutions with conditions which were developed by the first author in 1983. As a particular case, we describe connected …
We prove that the integral Hodge conjecture holds for 1-cycles on irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties of K3 type and of Generalized Kummer type. As an application, we give a new proof of the integral Hodge conjecture for cubic fourfolds.
For a symplectic manifold with an anti-symplectic involution having non-empty fixed locus, we construct a model of the moduli space of real sphere maps out of moduli spaces of decorated disk maps and give an explicit expression for its first Stiefel-Whitney class. As a corollary, we obtain a large number of examples, which include all odd-dimensional projective spaces and many complete intersections, for which many types of real moduli spaces are orientable. For these manifolds, we define open Gromov-Witten invariants with no restriction on the dimension of the manifolds or the type of the con…
Exploiting recent results on the ample cone of irreducible symplectic manifolds, we provide a different point of view for the computation of their monodromy groups. In particular, we give the final step in the computation of the monodromy group for generalised Kummer manifolds and we prove that the monodromy of O'Grady's ten dimensional manifold is smaller than what was expected.
The Beauville-Bogomolov lattice is computed for a simplest singular symplectic manifold of dimension 4, obtained as a partial desingularization of the quotient $S^{[2]}/ι$, where $S^{[2]}$ is the Hilbert square of a K3 surface $S$ and $ι$ is a symplectic involution on it. This result applies, in particular, to the singular symplectic manifolds of dimension 4, constructed by Markushevich-Tikhomirov as compactifications of families of Prym varieties of a linear system of curves on a K3 surface with an anti-symplectic involution.
We investigate the stability of fibers of coisotropic fibrations on holomorphic symplectic manifolds and generalize Voisin's result on Lagrangian subvarieties to this framework. We present applications to the moduli space of holomorphic symplectic manifolds which are deformations equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on a $K3$ surface or to generalized Kummer manifolds.

We consider the connected-sum method of constructing compact Riemannian 7-manifolds with holonomy G_2 developed in math.DG/0012189. The method requires pairs of projective complex threefolds endowed with anticanonical K3 divisors, the latter `matching' via a certain non-holomorphic map. Suitable examples of threefolds were previously obtained in math.DG/0012189 by blowing up curves in Fano threefolds. In this paper, we give further suitable algebraic threefolds using theory of K3 surfaces with non-symplectic involution due to Nikulin. These threefolds are not obtainable from Fano threefolds, a…
Lusztig defined certain involutions on the equivariant K-theory of Slodowy varieties and gave a characterization of certain bases called canonical bases. In this paper, we give a conjectural generalization of these involutions and K-theoretic canonical bases to conical symplectic resolutions which have good Hamiltonian torus actions and state several conjectures related to them which we check for toric hyper-Kahler manifolds. We also propose an elliptic analogue of these bar involutions. As a verification of our proposal, we explicitly construct elliptic lifts of K-theoretic canonical bases an…
We study the maps induced on cohomology by a Nikulin (i.e. a symplectic) involution on a K3 surface. We parametrize the eleven dimensional irreducible components of the moduli space of algebraic K3 surfaces with a Nikulin involution and we give examples of the general K3 surface in various components. We conclude with some remarks on Morrison-Nikulin involutions, these are Nikulin involutions which interchange two copies of E_8(-1) in the Neron Severi group.
We consider real forms of relatively minimal rational surfaces F_m. Connected components of moduli of real non-singular curves in |-2K_{F_m}| had been classified recently for m=0, 1, 4 in math.AG/0312396. Applying similar methods, here we fill the gap for m=2 and m=3 to complete similar classification for any 0\le m\le 4 when |-2K_{F_m}| is reduced. The case of F_2 is especially remarkable and classical (quadratic cone in P^3). As an application, we finished classification of connected components of moduli of real hyper-elliptically polarized K3 surfaces and their deformations to real polarize…
