We shall give an example of irreducible symplectic manifolds X and Y which are not bimeromorphic, but have the same periods in the second cohomologies. More explicitly, X and Y are generalized Kummer varieties of dim 4 for a general complex torus T of dim 2 and its dual torus T^*. A key result is an observation of Shioda for the periods of T and T^*. As a concluding remark, we shall discuss the difference between our case and Kummer surfaces.
We propose a generalization of Verbitsky's global Torelli theorem in the framework of compact Kähler irreducible holomorphically symplectic orbifolds by adapting Huybrechts' proof (arXiv:1106.5573). As intermediate step needed, we also provide a generalization of the twistor space and the projectivity criterion based on works of Campana (arXiv:math/0402243) and Huybrechts (arXiv:math/0106014) respectively.
We survey recent results about the Torelli question for holomorphic-symplectic varieties. Following are the main topics. A Hodge theoretic Torelli theorem. A study of the subgroup W, of the isometry group of the weight 2 Hodge structure, generated by reflection with respect to exceptional divisors. A description of the birational Kahler cone as a fundamental domain for the W-action on the positive cone. A proof of a weak version of Morrison's movable cone conjecture. A description of the moduli spaces of polarized holomorphic symplectic varieties as monodromy quotients of period domains of typ…
Let $(X,D)$ and $(X',D')$ be two compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g \geq 4$ with the set of marked points $D \subset X$ and $D' \subset X'$. Fix a parabolic line bundle $L$ with trivial parabolic structure. Let $\mathcal{N}_{\textnormal{Sp}}(2m,α,L)$ and $\mathcal{N}'_{\textnormal{Sp}}(2m,α,L)$ be the moduli spaces of stable symplectic parabolic Higgs bundles over $X$ and $X'$ respectively, with rank $2m$ and fixed parabolic structure $α$, with the symplectic form taking values in $L$. We prove that if $\mathcal{N}_{\textnormal{Sp}}(2m,α,L)$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{N}'_{\textnormal{Sp}}(2…
In this note, we give a short proof of the Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds that relies on the global Torelli theorem for irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties proved by Verbitsky.
We systematically study the moduli theory of symplectic varieties (in the sense of Beauville) which admit a resolution by an irreducible symplectic manifold. In particular, we prove an analog of Verbitsky's global Torelli theorem for the locally trivial deformations of such varieties. Verbitsky's work on ergodic complex structures replaces twistor lines as the essential global input. In so doing we extend many of the local deformation-theoretic results known in the smooth case to such (not-necessarily-projective) symplectic varieties. We deduce a number of applications to the birational geomet…
We prove a global Torelli theorem for the moduli space of marked triples (X,m,A), consisting of an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold X, a marking m of its second integral cohomology, and a stable and rigid sheaf A of Azumaya algebras on the cartesian product X^d, d>0, such that the second Chern class of A is invariant under a finite index subgroup of the monodromy group of X. The main example involves the rank 2n-2 sheaf over the cartesian square of holomorphic symplectic manifolds of K3[n]-type considered in the work of the first author arXiv:1105.3223. The result will be used in th…
We call a symplectic rational surface $(X,ω)$ \textit{positive} if $c_1(X)\cdot[ω]>0$. The positivity condition of a rational surface is equivalent to the existence of a divisor $D\subset X$, such that $(X, D)$ is a log Calabi-Yau surface. The cohomology class of a symplectic form can be endowed with a \textit{type} using the root system associated to its Lagrangian spherical classes. In this paper, we prove that the symplectic Torelli group of a positive rational surface is trivial if it is of type $\mathbb{A}$, and is a sphere braid group if it is of type $\mathbb{D}$. As an application, we …
Birational Calabi-Yau threefolds in the same deformation family provide a `weak' counterexample to the global Torelli problem, as long as they are not isomorphic. In this paper, it is shown that deformations of certain desingularized weighted complete intersections provide examples of families containing birational varieties. The constructed examples are shown to be non-isomorphic using a specialization argument.
We study the Fourier--Mukai numbers of rational elliptic surfaces. As its application, we give an example of a pair of minimal 3-folds with Kodaira dimensions 1, $h^1(\mc O)=h^2(\mc O)=0$ such that they are mutually derived equivalent, deformation equivalent, but not birationally equivalent. It also supplies a counterexample of the birational Torelli problem.
We establish a local model for the moduli space of holomorphic symplectic structures with logarithmic poles, near the locus of structures whose polar divisor is normal crossings. In contrast to the case without poles, the moduli space is singular: when the cohomology class of a symplectic structure satisfies certain linear equations with integer coefficients, its polar divisor can be partially smoothed, yielding adjacent irreducible components of the moduli space that correspond to possibly non-normal crossings structures. These components are indexed by combinatorial data we call smoothing di…
We show that there is a good notion of irreducible sympelectic varieties of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero or $p > n + 1$. Then we construct mixed characteristic moduli spaces for these varieties. Our main result is a generalization of Ogus' crystalline Torelli theorem for supersingular K3 surfaces. For applications, we answer a slight variant of a question asked by F. Charles on moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces and give a crystalline Torelli theorem for supersingular cubic fourfolds.
We produce counterexamples to the birational Torelli theorem for Calabi-Yau manifolds in arbitrarily high dimension: this is done by exhibiting a series of non birational pairs of Calabi-Yau $(n^2-1)$-folds which, for $n \geq 2$ even, admit an isometry between their middle cohomologies. These varieties also satisfy an $\mathbb L$-equivalence relation in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, i.e. the difference of their classes annihilates a power of the class of the affine line. We state this last property for a broader class of Calabi-Yau pairs, namely all those which are realized as pushforwar…
The Grassmannian Gr(2,5) is embedded in $\Bbb{P}^9$ via the Plücker embedding. The intersection of two general PGL(10)-translates of Gr(2,5) is a Calabi-Yau 3-fold X, and the intersection of the projective duals of the two translates is another Calabi-Yau 3-fold Y, deformation equivalent to X. Applying results of Kuznetsov and Jiang-Leung-Xie shows that X and Y are derived equivalent, which by a result of Addington implies that their third cohomology groups are isomorphic as polarised Hodge structures. We show that X and Y provide counterexamples to a certain "birational" Torelli statement for…
We construct a gauged linear sigma model with two non-birational Kälher phases which we prove to be derived equivalent, $\mathbb{L}$-equivalent, deformation equivalent and Hodge equivalent. This provides a new counterexample to the birational Torelli problem which admits a simple GLSM interpretation.
We develop the global moduli theory of symplectic varieties in the sense of Beauville. We prove a number of analogs of classical results from the smooth case, including a global Torelli theorem. In particular, this yields a new proof of Verbitsky's global Torelli theorem in the smooth case (assuming $b_2\geq 5$) which does not use the existence of a hyperkähler metric or twistor deformations.
Kreck and Yang Su recently gave counterexamples to a version of the Torelli theorem for hyperkählerian manifolds as stated by Verbitsky. The initial purpose of this document (which was prepared for a seminar talk) was to extract the correct statement and to give a short proof of it. We also revisit a few of its consequences, some of which are given new (shorter) proofs.
We solve the infinitesimal Torelli problem for $3$-dimensional quasi-smooth ${\mathbb{Q}}$-Fano hypersurfaces with at worst terminal singularities. We also find infinite chains of double coverings of increasing dimension which alternatively distribute themselves in examples and counterexamples for the infinitesimal Torelli claim and which share the analogue, and in some cases the same, Hodge-diagram properties as the length $3$ Gushel-Mukai chain of prime smooth Fanos of coindex $3$ and degree $10$.
Algebraic surfaces of general type with $q=0$, $p_g=2$ and $K^2=1$ were described by Enriques and then studied in more detail by Horikawa. In this paper we consider a $16$-dimensional family of special Horikawa surfaces which are certain bidouble covers of $\mathbb{P}^2$. The construction is motivated by that of special Kunev surfaces which are counterexamples for infinitesimal Torelli and generic global Torelli problem. The main result of the paper is a generic global Torelli theorem for special Horikawa surfaces. To prove the theorem, we relate the periods of special Horikawa surfaces to the…
In 1995, Dan Guan constructed examples of non-Kahler, simply-connected holomorphically symplectic manifolds. An alternative construction, using the Hilbert scheme of Kodaira-Thurston surface, was given by F. Bogomolov. We investigate topology and deformation theory of Bogomolov-Guan manifolds and show that it is similar to that of hyperkahler manifolds. We prove the local Torelli theorem, showing that holomorphically symplectic deformations of BG-manifolds are unobstructed, and the corresponding period map is locally a diffeomorphism. Using the local Torelli theorem, we prove the Fujiki formul…
The known counterexamples to the global Torelli theorem for higher-dimensional hyperkahler manifolds are provided by birational manifolds. We address the question whether two birational hyperkahler manifolds (i.e. irreducible symplectic) manifolds always define non-separated points in the moduli space of marked manifolds. An affirmative answer is given for the cases of Mukai's elementary transformations and birational correspondences which are isomorphic in codimension two. The techniques are applied to show that the moduli spaces of rank two sheaves on a K3 surface are deformation equivalent …
We classify the symplectic automorphism groups for cubic fourfolds. The main inputs are the global Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds and the classification of the fixed-point sublattices of the Leech lattice. Among the highlights of our results, we note that there are 34 possible groups of symplectic automorphisms, with 6 maximal cases. The six maximal cases correspond to 8 non-isomorphic, and isolated in moduli, cubic fourfolds; six of them previously identified by other authors. Finally, the Fermat cubic fourfold has the largest possible order (174,960) for the automorphism group (non-nece…
In chapter 1 we define period mappings of Hodge-de Rahm type for certain submersive, yet not necessarily locally topologically trivial, morphisms of complex manifolds. Generalizing Griffiths's theory, we interpret the differential of such period mappings as the composition of the Kodaira-Spencer map and a map derived from the sheaf cohomological cup product and the contraction of vector fields with differential forms. In chapter 2 of the text, we consider a submersive morphism $f\colon X\to S$ of complex spaces which is compactified by a proper, flat, and Kähler morphism $\bar f\colon \bar X\t…
The Torelli group $\mathcal T(X)$ of a closed smooth manifold $X$ is the subgroup of the mapping class group $π_0(\mathrm{Diff}^+(X))$ consisting of elements which act trivially on the integral cohomology of $X$. In this note we give counterexamples to Theorem 3.4 of Verbitsky's paper "Mapping class group and a global Torelli theorem for hyperkähler manifolds" (Duke Math.~J.~162 (2013), no.~15, 2929-2986) which states that the Torelli group of simply connected Kähler manifolds of complex dimension $\ge 3$ is finite. This is done by constructing under some mild conditions homomorphisms $J: \mat…
Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold with trivial canonical bundle and satisfying the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-Lemma. We show that the Kuranishi space of $X$ is a smooth universal deformation and that small deformations enjoy the same properties as $X$. If, in addition, $X$ admits a complex symplectic form, then the local Torelli theorem holds and we obtain some information about the period map. We clarify the structure of such manifolds a little by showing that the Albanese map is a surjective submersion.
We establish constraints on the topology of smooth Lefschetz fibrations with $4$-dimensional fibers, by studying the family Bauer-Furuta invariant. To compute this invariant, we analyze the framed bordism class of 1-dimensional Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces using the local index theorem by Bismut-Freed. Using this, we deduce new obstructions to the smooth isotopy to the identity for compositions of Dehn twists on $(-2)$-spheres in closed $4$-manifolds. We obtain several applications: (1) We exhibit the first examples of closed simply-connected symplectic $4$-manifolds admitting Torelli symplect…
A mapping class group of an oriented manifold is a quotient of its diffeomorphism group by the isotopies. In the published version of "Mapping class group and a global Torelli theorem for hyperkahler manifolds" I made an error based on a wrong quotation of Dennis Sullivan's famous paper "Infinitesimal computations in topology". I claimed that the natural homomorphism from the mapping class group to the group of automorphims of cohomology of a simply connected Kahler manifold has finite kernel. In a recent preprint arXiv:1907.05693, Matthias Kreck and Yang Su produced counterexamples to this st…
Each finite dimensional irreducible rational representation V of the symplectic group Sp_{2g} determines a generically defined local system \V over the moduli space M_g of genus g smooth projective curves. We study H^2(M_g;\V) and the mixed Hodge structure on it. Specifically, we prove that if g>5, then the natural map IH^2(MS_g;\V)-->H^2(M_g;\V) is an isomorphism where MS_g is the Satake compactification of M_g. Using the work of Saito we conclude that the mixed Hodge structure on H^2(M_g;\V) is pure of weight 2+r if \V underlies a variation of Hodge structure of weight r. We also obtain esti…
The name "K3 surfaces" was coined by A. Weil in 1957 when he formulated a research programme for these surfaces and their moduli. Since then, irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds have been introduced as a higher dimensional analogue of K3 surfaces. In this paper we present a review of this theory starting from the definition of K3 surfaces and going as far as the global Torelli theorem for irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds as recently proved by M. Verbitsky. For many years the last open question of Weil's programme was that of the geometric type of the moduli spaces of polar…
We study symplectic varieties defined over fields of positive characteristics, especially the supersingular ones, generalizing the theory of supersingular K3 surfaces. In this work, we are mainly interested in the following two types of symplectic varieties over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, under natural numerical conditions: (1) smooth moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces and (2) smooth Albanese fibers of moduli spaces of sheaves on abelian surfaces. Several natural definitions of the supersingularity for symplectic varieties are discussed, which are proved to …
We consider D-branes in string theory and address the issue of how to describe them mathematically as a fundamental object (as opposed to a solitonic object) of string theory in the realm in differential and symplectic geometry. The notion of continuous maps, $k$-times differentiable maps, and smooth maps from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a (commutative) real manifold $Y$ is developed. Such maps are meant to describe D-branes or matrix branes in string theory when these branes are light and soft with only small enough or even zero brane-tension. When $Y$ is a symplec…
