Suppose that A and B are real stable matrices, and that their difference A-B is rank one. Then A and B have a common quadratic Lyapunov function if and only if the product AB has no real negative eigenvalue. This result is due to Shorten and Narendra, who showed that it follows as a consequence of the Kalman-Yacubovich-Popov solution of the Lur'e problem. Here we present a new and independent proof based on results from convex analysis and the theory of moments.
We provide an example proving that there exists no quadratic Lyapunov function for a certain class of linear agreement/consensus algorithms, a fact that had been numerically verified in [5]. We also briefly discuss sufficient conditions for the existence of such a Lyapunov function.
In 1964, Polyak showed that the Heavy-ball method, the simplest momentum technique, accelerates convergence of strongly-convex problems in the vicinity of the solution. While Nesterov later developed a globally accelerated version, Polyak's original algorithm remains simpler and more widely used in applications such as deep learning. Despite this popularity, the question of whether Heavy-ball is also globally accelerated or not has not been fully answered yet, and no convincing counterexample has been provided. This is largely due to the difficulty in finding an effective Lyapunov function: in…
The Lyapunov rank of a proper cone $K$ in a finite dimensional real Hilbert space is defined as the dimension of the space of all Lyapunov-like transformations on $K$, or equivalently, the dimension of the Lie algebra of the automorphism group of $K$. This (rank) measures the number of linearly independent bilinear relations needed to express a complementarity system on $K$ (that arises, for example, from a linear program or a complementarity problem on the cone). Motivated by the problem of describing spectral/proper cones where the complementarity system can be expressed as a square system (…
We present a novel way of generating Lyapunov functions for proving linear convergence rates of first-order optimization methods. Our approach provably obtains the fastest linear convergence rate that can be verified by a quadratic Lyapunov function (with given states), and only relies on solving a small-sized semidefinite program. Our approach combines the advantages of performance estimation problems (PEP, due to Drori & Teboulle (2014)) and integral quadratic constraints (IQC, due to Lessard et al. (2016)), and relies on convex interpolation (due to Taylor et al. (2017c;b)).
This paper proposes a method for certifying the local asymptotic stability of a given nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) by using Sum-of-Squares (SOS) programming to search for a partially quadratic Lyapunov Function (LF). The proposed method is particularly well suited to the stability analysis of ODEs with high dimensional state spaces. This is due to the fact that partially quadratic LFs are parametrized by fewer decision variables when compared with general SOS LFs. The main contribution of this paper is using the Center Manifold Theorem to show that partially quadratic LFs tha…
In this paper the existence of a quadratic control Lyapunov function for bilinear systems is considered. The existence of a control Lyapunov function ensures the existence of a control law which ensures the global asymptotic stability of the closed loop control system. In this paper we will derive conditions for the existence of a control Lyapunov function for bilinear systems. These conditions will be derived for the whole class of two dimensional bilinear systems with one control input. This will lead to a simple flow diagram representation for the controller design for bilinear systems usin…
This paper is concerned with the problem of finding a quadratic common Lyapunov function for a family of stable linear systems. We present gradient iteration algorithms which give deterministic convergence for finite system families and probabilistic convergence for infinite families.
Performance analysis for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems has been closely tied to quadratic Lyapunov functions ever since it was shown that LTI system stability is equivalent to the existence of such a Lyapunov function. Some metrics for LTI systems, however, have resisted treatment via means of quadratic Lyapunov functions. Among these, point-wise-in-time metrics, such as peak norms, are not captured accurately using these techniques, and this shortcoming has prevented the development of tools to analyze system behavior by means other than e.g. time-domain simulations. This work demonstra…
This paper tackles state feedback control of switched linear systems under arbitrary switching. We propose a data-driven control framework that allows to compute a stabilizing state feedback using only a finite set of observations of trajectories with quadratic and sum of squares (SOS) Lyapunov functions. We do not require any knowledge on the dynamics or the switching signal, and as a consequence, we aim at solving \emph{uniform} stabilization problems in which the feedback is stabilizing for all possible switching sequences. In order to generalize the solution obtained from trajectories to t…
We propose a learning-based method for Lyapunov stability analysis of piecewise affine dynamical systems in feedback with piecewise affine neural network controllers. The proposed method consists of an iterative interaction between a learner and a verifier, where in each iteration, the learner uses a collection of samples of the closed-loop system to propose a Lyapunov function candidate as the solution to a convex program. The learner then queries the verifier, which solves a mixed-integer program to either validate the proposed Lyapunov function candidate or reject it with a counterexample, …
This paper studies switching stabilization problems for general switched nonlinear systems. A piecewise smooth control-Lyapunov function (PSCLF) approach is proposed and a constructive way to design a stabilizing switching law is developed. The switching law is constructed via the directional derivatives of the PSCLF with a careful discussion on various technical issues that may occur on the nonsmooth surfaces. Sufficient conditions are derived to ensure stability of the closed-loop Filippov solutions including possible sliding motions. The proposed PSCLF approach contains many existing result…
In this paper, we develop a unified framework able to certify both exponential and subexponential convergence rates for a wide range of iterative first-order optimization algorithms. To this end, we construct a family of parameter-dependent nonquadratic Lyapunov functions that can generate convergence rates in addition to proving asymptotic convergence. Using Integral Quadratic Constraints (IQCs) from robust control theory, we propose a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) to guide the search for the parameters of the Lyapunov function in order to establish a rate bound. Based on this result, we for…
The Lyapunov exponent corresponding to a set of square matrices $\mathcal{A} = \{A_1, \dots, A_n \}$ and a probability distribution $p$ over $\{1, \dots, n\}$ is $λ(\mathcal{A},p) := \lim_{k \to \infty} \frac{1}{k} \,\mathbb{E} \log \|A_{σ_k} \cdots A_{σ_2}A_{σ_1}\|$, where $σ_i$ are i.i.d. according to $p$. This quantity is of fundamental importance to control theory since it determines the asymptotic convergence rate $e^{λ(\mathcal{A},p)}$ of the stochastic linear dynamical system $x_{k+1} = A_{σ_k} x_k$. This paper investigates the following "design problem": given $\mathcal{A}$, compute th…
We apply a recently proposed method for the acceleration of model predictive control (MPC) to 36 MPC implementations, which result from combining six sample receding horizon control problems with six quadratic programming solvers. We implement each of the 36 system-solver-combinations both with and without constraint removal and compare computational times for statistically relevant numbers of runs.
This paper addresses the analysis and design of quadratic neural networks, which have been recently introduced in the literature, and their applications to regression, classification, system identification and control of dynamical systems. These networks offer several advantages, the most important of which are the fact that the architecture is a by-product of the design and is not determined a-priori, their training can be done by solving a convex optimization problem so that the global optimum of the weights is achieved, and the input-output mapping can be expressed analytically by a quadrat…
This paper presents adaptive robust quadratic program (QP) based control using control Lyapunov and barrier functions for nonlinear systems subject to time-varying and state-dependent uncertainties. An adaptive estimation law is proposed to estimate the pointwise value of the uncertainties with pre-computable estimation error bounds. The estimated uncertainty and the error bounds are then used to formulate a robust QP, which ensures that the actual uncertain system will not violate the safety constraints defined by the control barrier function. Additionally, the accuracy of the uncertainty est…
We analyze strict dissipativity of generalized linear quadratic optimal control problems on Hilbert spaces. Here, the term ``generalized'' refers to cost functions containing both quadratic and linear terms. We characterize strict pre-dissipativity with a quadratic storage function via coercivity of a particular Lyapunov-like quadratic form. Further, we show that under an additional algebraic assumption, strict pre-dissipativity can be strengthened to strict dissipativity. Last, we relate the obtained characterizations of dissipativity with exponential detectability.
We present an efficient algorithm for solving fractional programming problems whose objective functions are the ratio of a low-rank quadratic to a positive definite quadratic with convex constraints. The proposed algorithm for these convex-convex problems is based on the Shen-Yu Quadratic Transform which finds stationary points of concave-convex sum-of-ratios problems. We further use elements of the algorithm proposed in [arXiv:1802.10192] and the classic Dinkelbach approach to ensure convergence. We show that our algorithm performs better than previous algorithms for low-rank problems.

This paper proposes a notion of viscosity weak supersolutions to build a bridge between stochastic Lyapunov stability theory and viscosity solution theory. Different from ordinary differential equations, stochastic differential equations can have the origins being stable despite having no smooth stochastic Lyapunov functions (SLFs). The feature naturally requires that the related Lyapunov equations are illustrated via viscosity solution theory, which deals with non-smooth solutions to partial differential equations. This paper claims that stochastic Lyapunov stability theory needs a weak exten…
Gantmacher-Lyapunov Theorem (1950's) characterizes matrices whose spectrum lies in the right-half of the complex plane. Here this result is refined to Hyper-Lyapunov inclusion for matrices whose spectrum lies in some disks within the right-half plane. These disks turn to be closed under inversion, and when their radius approaches infinity, the original result is recovered. Hyper-Lyapunov inclusions are formulated through Quadratic Matrix Inequalities and so are the analogous Hyper-Stein sets of matrices whose spectrum lies within a sub-unit disk. As a by-product, it is shown that these disks c…

We introduce High-Relative Degree Stochastic Control Lyapunov functions and Barrier Functions as a means to ensure asymptotic stability of the system and incorporate state dependent high relative degree safety constraints on a non-linear stochastic systems. Our proposed formulation also provides a generalisation to the existing literature on control Lyapunov and barrier functions for stochastic systems. The control policies are evaluated using a constrained quadratic program that is based on control Lyapunov and barrier functions. Our proposed control design is validated via simulated experime…
We propose a method for low-rank semidefinite programming in application to the semidefinite relaxation of unconstrained binary quadratic problems. The method improves an existing solution of the semidefinite programming relaxation to achieve a lower rank solution. This procedure is computationally efficient as it does not require projecting on the cone of positive-semidefinite matrices. Its performance in terms of objective improvement and rank reduction is tested over multiple graphs of large-scale Gset graph collection and over binary optimization problems from the Biq Mac collection.
We prove that for linear, discrete, time-varying, deterministic system (perfect model) with noisy outputs, the Riccati transformation in the Kalman filter asymptotically bounds the rank of the forecast and the analysis error covariance matrices to be less than or equal to the number of non-negative Lyapunov exponents of the system. Further, the support of these error covariance matrices is shown to be confined to the space spanned by the unstable-neutral backward Lyapunov vectors, providing the theoretical justification for the methodology of the algorithms that perform assimilation only in th…
This paper proposes a line integral Lyapunov function approach to stability analysis and stabilization for Itô stochastic T-S models. Unlike the deterministic case, stability analysis of this model needs the information of Hessian matrix of the line integral Lyapunov function which is related to partial derivatives of the basis functions. By introducing a new method to handle these partial derivatives and using the property of state-dependent matrix with rank one, the stability conditions of the underlying system can be established via a line integral Lyapunov function. These conditions obtain…

Existing results for low-rank matrix recovery largely focus on quadratic loss, which enjoys favorable properties such as restricted strong convexity/smoothness (RSC/RSM) and well conditioning over all low rank matrices. However, many interesting problems involve more general, non-quadratic losses, which do not satisfy such properties. For these problems, standard nonconvex approaches such as rank-constrained projected gradient descent (a.k.a. iterative hard thresholding) and Burer-Monteiro factorization could have poor empirical performance, and there is no satisfactory theory guaranteeing glo…
