In this paper we describe a family of isomorphism invariants of a finitely generated Coxeter group W. Each of these invariants is the isomorphism type of a quotient group W/N of W by a characteristic subgroup N. The virtue of these invariants is that W/N is also a Coxeter group. For some of these invariants, the isomorphism problem of W/N is solved and so we obtain isomorphism invariants that can be effectively used to distinguish isomorphism types of finitely generated Coxeter groups.
By a recent result obtained by R. Howlett and the author considerable progress has been made towards a complete solution of the isomorphism problem for Coxeter groups. In this paper we give a survey on the isomorphism problem and explain in particular how the result mentioned above reduces it to its `reflection preserving' version. Furthermore we desrcibe recent developments concerning the solution of the latter.
In this paper we prove, without the finite rank assumption, that any irreducible Coxeter group of infinite order is directly indecomposable as an abstract group. The key ingredient of the proof is that we can determine, for an irreducible Coxeter group, the centralizers of the normal subgroups that are generated by involutions. As a consequence, we show that the problem of deciding whether two general Coxeter groups are isomorphic, as abstract groups, is reduced to the case of irreducible Coxeter groups, without assuming the finiteness of the number of the irreducible components or their ranks…
A solution of the isomorphism problem is presented for the class of Coxeter groups W that have a finite set of Coxeter generators S such that the underlying graph of the presentation diagram of the system (W,S) has the property that every cycle of length at least four has a cord. As an application, we construct counterexamples to two main conjectures concerning the isomorphism problem for Coxeter groups.
We consider presentations that were derived in \cite{BaumeisterNeaimeRees} for the interval groups associated with proper quasi-Coxeter elements of the Coxeter group $W(D_n)$. We use combinatorial methods to derive alternative presentations for the groups, and use these new presentations to show that the interval group associated with a proper quasi-Coxeter element of $W(D_n)$ cannot be isomorphic to the Artin group of type $D_n$. While the specific problems we solve arise from the study of interval groups, their solution provides an illustration of how techniques indicated by computational ob…
Let $W$ be a Coxeter group and $r\in W$ a reflection. If the group of order 2 generated by $r$ is the intersection of all the maximal finite subgroups of $W$ that contain it, then any isomorphism from $W$ to a Coxeter group $W'$ must take $r$ to a reflection in $W'$. The aim of this paper is to show how to determine, by inspection of the Coxeter graph, the intersection of the maximal finite sugroups containing $r$. In particular we show that the condition above is satisfied whenever $W$ is infinite and irreducible, and has the property that all rank two parabolic subgroups are finite. So in th…

In this paper, given a split extension of an arbitrary Coxeter group by automorphisms of the Coxeter graph, we determine the involutions in that extension whose centralizer has finite index. Our result has applications to many problems such as the isomorphism problem of general Coxeter groups. In the argument, some properties of certain special elements and of the fixed-point subgroups by graph automorphisms in Coxeter groups, which are of independent interest, are also given.

The isomorphism problem for Coxeter groups has been reduced to its 'reflection preserving version' by B. Howlett and the second author. Thus, in order to solve it, it suffices to determine for a given Coxeter system (W,R) all Coxeter generating sets S of W which are contained in R^W, the set of reflections of (W,R). In this paper, we provide a further reduction: it suffices to determine all Coxeter generating sets S in R^W which are sharp-angled with respect to R.

In this paper, we show that any Coxeter graph which defines a higher rank Coxeter group must have disjoint induced subgraphs each of which defines a hyperbolic or higher rank Coxeter group. We then use this result to demonstrate several classes of Coxeter graphs which define hyperbolic Coxeter groups.
In this paper we prove a series of matching theorems for two sets of Coxeter generators of a finitely generated Coxeter group that identify common features of the two sets of generators. As an application, we describe an algorithm for finding a set of Coxeter generators of maximum rank for a finitely generated Coxeter group.
This paper studies the rigidity properties of the abstract commensurator of the outer automorphism group of a universal Coxeter group of rank $n$, which is the free product $W_n$ of $n$ copies of $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. We prove that for $n\geq 5$ the natural map $\mathrm{Out}(W_n) \to \mathrm{Comm}(\mathrm{Out}(W_n))$ is an isomorphism and that every isomorphism between finite index subgroups of $\mathrm{Out}(W_n)$ is given by a conjugation by an element of $\mathrm{Out}(W_n)$.
We prove that two angle-compatible Coxeter generating sets of a given finitely generated Coxeter group are conjugate provided one of them does not admit any elementary twist. This confirms a basic case of a general conjecture which describes a potential solution to the isomorphism problem for Coxeter groups.

The OGS for non-abelian groups is an interesting generalization of the basis of finite abelian groups. The definition of OGS states that every element of a group has a unique presentation as a product of some powers of specific generators of the group, in a specific given order. In case of the symmetric groups Sn there is a paper of R. Shwartz, which demonstrates a strong connection between the OGS and the standard Coxeter presentation of the symmetric group, which is called the standard OGS of Sn. In this paper we generalize the standard OGS of Sn to the finite classical Coxeter group Bn. We …

It has been known that the centralizer $Z_W(W_I)$ of a parabolic subgroup $W_I$ of a Coxeter group $W$ is a split extension of a naturally defined reflection subgroup by a subgroup defined by a 2-cell complex $\mathcal{Y}$. In this paper, we study the structure of $Z_W(W_I)$ further and show that, if $I$ has no irreducible components of type $A_n$ with $2 \leq n < \infty$, then every element of finite irreducible components of the inner factor is fixed by a natural action of the fundamental group of $\mathcal{Y}$. This property has an application to the isomorphism problem in Coxeter groups.
The following results are proved: The center of any finite index subgroup of an irreducible, infinite, non-affine Coxeter group is trivial; Any finite index subgroup of an irreducible, infinite, non-affine Coxeter group cannot be expressed as a product of two nontrivial subgroups. These two theorems imply a unique decomposition theorem for a class of Coxeter groups. We also obtain that the orbit of each element other than the identity under the conjugation action in an irreducible, infinite, non-affine Coxeter group is an infinite set. This implies that an irreducible, infinite Coxeter group i…
Let $W$ be a Coxeter group. We provide a precise description of the conjugacy classes in $W$, in the spirit of Matsumoto's theorem. This extends to all Coxeter groups an important result on finite Coxeter groups by M. Geck and G. Pfeiffer from 1993. In particular, we describe the cyclically reduced elements of $W$, thereby proving a conjecture of A. Cohen from 1994.
We refine Brink's theorem, that the non-reflection part of a reflection centralizer in a Coxeter group W is a free group. We give an explicit set of generators for centralizer, which is finitely generated when W is. And we give a method for computing the Coxeter diagram for its reflection subgroup. In many cases, our method allows one to compute centralizers in one's head.
In this note we give a classification of the Maximal order Abelian subgroups of finite irreducible Coxeter groups. We also prove a Weyl group analogue of Cartan's theorem that all maximal tori in a connected compact Lie group are conjugate.
Given an odd prime number $p$ and a Coxeter group $W$ such that the order of the product $st$ is prime to $p$ for every Coxeter generators $s,t$ of $W$, we prove that the $p$-local homology groups $H_k(W,\mathbb{Z}_{(p)})$ vanish for $1\leq k\leq 2(p-2)$. This generalize a known vanishing result for symmetric groups due to Minoru Nakaoka.
We determine the epimorphisms $A \to W$ from the Artin group $A$ of type $Γ$ onto the Coxeter group $W$ of type $Γ$, in case $Γ$ is an irreducible Coxeter graph of spherical type, and we prove that the kernel of the standard epimorphism is a characteristic subgroup of $A$. This generalizes an over 50 years old result of Artin.
In this paper, we show that the center of every Coxeter group is finite and isomorphic to $(\Z_2)^n$ for some $n\ge 0$. Moreover, for a Coxeter system $(W,S)$, we prove that $Z(W)=Z(W_{S\setminus\tilde{S}})$ and $Z(W_{\tilde{S}})=1$, where $Z(W)$ is the center of the Coxeter group $W$ and $\tilde{S}$ is the subset of $S$ such that the parabolic subgroup $W_{\tilde{S}}$ is the {\it essential parabolic subgroup} of $(W,S)$ (i.e.\ $W_{\tilde{S}}$ is the minimum parabolic subgroup of finite index in $(W,S)$). The finiteness of the center of a Coxeter group implies that a splitting theorem holds fo…
It is an open question whether right-angled Coxeter groups have unique group-equivariant visual boundaries. Croke and Kleiner present a right-angled Artin group with more than one visual boundary. In this paper we present a right-angled Coxeter group with non-unique equivariant visual boundary. The main theorem is that if right-angled Coxeter groups act geometrically on a Croke-Kleiner spaces, then the local angles in those spaces all have to be right angles. We present a specific right-angled Coxeter group with non-unique equivariant visual boundary. However, we conjecture that the right an- …
The root systems appearing in the theory of Lie superalgebras and Nichols algebras admit a large symmetry extending properly the one coming from the Weyl group. Based on this observation we set up a general framework in which the symmetry object is a groupoid. We prove that in our context the groupoid is generated by reflections and Coxeter relations. This answers a question of Serganova. Our weak version of the exchange condition allows us to prove Matsumoto's theorem. Therefore the word problem is solved for the groupoid.

A Coxeter system is an ordered pair (W,S) where S is the generating set in a particular type of presentation for the Coxeter group W. A subgroup of W is called special if it is generated by a subset of S. Amalgamated product decompositions of a Coxeter group having special factors and special amalgamated subgroup are easily recognized from the presentation of the Coxeter group. If a Coxeter group is a subgroup of the fundamental group of a given graph of groups, then the Coxeter group is also the fundamental group of a graph of special subgroups, where each vertex and edge group is a subgroup …
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the statistic (des+ides) which assigns to an element w of a finite Coxeter group W the number of descents of w plus the number of descents of its inverse. Our main result is a central limit theorem for the probability distributions associated to this statistic. This answers a question of Kahle-Stump and generalises work of Chatterjee-Diaconis, Özdemir and Röttger.
The principal objects studied in this note are Coxeter groups $W$ that are neither finite nor affine. A well known result of de la Harpe asserts that such groups have exponential growth. We consider quotients of $W$ by its parabolic subgroups and by a certain class of reflection subgroups. We show that these quotients have exponential growth as well. To achieve this, we use a theorem of Dyer to construct a reflection subgroup of $W$ that is isomorphic to the universal Coxeter group on three generators. The results are all proved under the restriction that the Coxeter diagram of $W$ is simply l…
In this paper we consider the class of 2-dimensional Artin groups with connected, large type, triangle-free defining graphs (type CLTTF). We classify these groups up to isomorphism, and describe a generating set for the automorphism group of each such Artin group. In the case where the defining graph has no separating edge or vertex we show that the Artin group is not abstractly commensurable to any other CLTTF Artin group. If, moreover, the defining graph satisfies a further `vertex rigidity' condition, then the abstract commensurator group of the Artin group is isomorphic to its automorphism…
The Matsuo-Cherednik correspondence is an isomorphism from solutions of Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations to eigenfunctions of generalized Calogero-Moser systems associated to Coxeter groups G and a multiplicity function m on their root systems. We apply this correspondence to the most degenerate case of zero spectral parameters. The space of eigenfunctions is then the space H_m of m-harmonic polynomials, recently introduced in math-ph/0105014. We compute the Poincare' polynomials for the space H_m and of its isotypical components corresponding to each irreducible representation of the group G.…
We extend well-known results in group theory to gyrogroups, especially the isomorphism theorems. We prove that an arbitrary gyrogroup $G$ induces the gyrogroup structure on the symmetric group of $G$ so that Cayley's Theorem is obtained. Introducing the notion of L-subgyrogroups, we show that an L-subgyrogroup partitions $G$ into left cosets. Consequently, if $H$ is an L-subgyrogroup of a finite gyrogroup $G$, then the order of $H$ divides the order of $G$.
The main theorem of this paper classifies the quasi-geodesics in a Coxeter group that are tracked by geodesics. As corollaries, we show that if a Coxeter group acts geometrically on a CAT(0) space X then CAT(0) rays (and lines) are tracked by Cayley graph geodesics, all special subgroups of the Coxeter group are quasi-convex in X, and in Cayley graphs for Coxeter groups, elements of infinite order are tracked by geodesics.
We study the subregular $J$-ring $J_C$ of a Coxeter system $(W,S)$, a subring of Lusztig's $J$-ring. We prove that $J_C$ is isomorphic to a quotient of the path algebra of the double quiver of $(W,S)$ by a suitable ideal that we associate to a family of Chebyshev polynomials. As applications, we use quiver representations to study the category mod-$A_K$ of finite dimensional right modules of the algebra $A_K=K\otimes_\Z J_C$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic zero. Our results include classifications of Coxeter systems for which mod-$A_K$ is semisimple, has finitely many …
We give formulas for the second and third integral homology of an arbitrary finitely generated Coxeter group, solely in terms of the corresponding Coxeter diagram. The first of these calculations refines a theorem of Howlett, while the second is entirely new and is the first explicit formula for the third homology of an arbitrary Coxeter group.
An even Artin group is a group which has a presentation with relations of the form $(st)^n=(ts)^n$ with $n\ge 1$. With a group $G$ we associate a Lie $\mathbb Z$-algebra $\mathcal{TG}r(G)$. This is the usual Lie algebra defined from the lower central series, truncated at the third rank. For each even Artin group $G$ we determine a presentation for $\mathcal{TG}r(G)$. Then we prove a criterion to determine whether two Coxeter matrices are isomorphic. Let $c,d\in\mathbb N$ such that $c\ge1$, $d\ge2$ and $\gcd(c,d)=1$. We show that, if two even Artin groups $G$ and $G'$ having presentations with …
Each quiver appearing in a seed of a cluster algebra determines a corresponding group, which we call a cluster group, which is defined via a presentation. Grant and Marsh showed that, for quivers appearing in seeds of cluster algebras of finite type, the associated cluster groups are isomorphic to finite reflection groups. As for finite Coxeter groups, we can consider parabolic subgroups of cluster groups. We prove that, in the type $A_{n}$ case, there exists an isomorphism between the lattice of subsets of the defining generators of the cluster group and the lattice of its parabolic subgroups…

Handelman (J. Operator Theory, 1981) proved that if the spectral radius of a matrix $A$ is a simple root of the characteristic polynomial and is strictly greater than the modulus of any other root, then $A$ is conjugate to a matrix $Z$ some power of which is positive. In this article, we provide an explicit conjugate matrix $Z$, and prove that the spectral radius of $A$ is a simple and dominant eigenvalue of $A$ if and only if $Z$ is eventually positive. For $n\times n$ real matrices with each row-sum equal to $1$, this criterion can be declined into checking that each entry of some power is s…
For a real reflection group the reflecting hyperplanes cut out on the unit sphere a simplicial complex called the Coxeter complex. Abramenko showed that each reflecting hyperplane meets the Coxeter complex in another Coxeter complex if and only if the Coxeter diagram contains no subdiagram of type $D_4$, $F_4$, or $H_4$. The present paper extends Abramenko's result to a wider class of complex reflection groups. These groups have a Coxeter-like presentation and a Coxeter-like complex called the Milnor fiber complex. Our first main theorem classifies the groups whose reflecting hyperplanes meet …
We provide geometric conditions on a pair of hyperplanes of a CAT(0) cube complex that imply divergence bounds for the cube complex. As an application, we classify all right-angled Coxeter groups with quadratic divergence and show right-angled Coxeter groups cannot exhibit a divergence function between quadratic and cubic. This generalizes a theorem of Dani-Thomas that addressed the class of 2-dimensional right-angled Coxeter groups. As another application, we provide an inductive graph theoretic criteria on a right-angled Coxeter group's defining graph which allows us to recognize arbitrary i…
The notion of a linear Coxeter system introduced by Vinberg generalizes the geometric representation of a Coxeter group. Our main theorem asserts that if $v$ is an element of the Tits cone of a linear Coxeter system and $\cW$ is the corresponding Coxeter group, then $\cW v \subeq v - C_v,$ where $C_v$ is the convex cone generated by the coroots $\check α$, for which $α(v) > 0$. This implies that the convex hull of $\cW v$ is completely determined by the image of $v$ under the reflections in $\cW$. We also apply an analogous result for convex hulls of $\cW$-orbits in the dual space, although th…

Let $X$ be the surface $\T\times\T$ where $\T$ is the complex torus. This paper is the third in a series, studying the fundamental group of the Galois cover of $X$ \wrt a generic projection onto $\C¶^2$. Van Kampen Theorem gives a presentation of the fundamental group of the complement of the branch curve, with 54 generators and more than 2000 relations. Here we introduce a certain natural quotient (obtained by identifying pairs of generators), prove it is a quotient of a Coxeter group related to the degeneration of $X$, and show that this quotient is virtually nilpotent.
A generic finite presentation defines a word hyperbolic group whose boundary is homeomorphic to the Menger curve. In this article, we produce the first known examples of non-hyperbolic $CAT(0)$ groups whose visual boundary is homeomorphic to the Menger curve. The examples in question are the Coxeter groups whose nerve is a complete graph on $n$ vertices for $n\geq 5$. The construction depends on a slight extension of Sierpiński's theorem on embedding $1$--dimensional planar compacta into the Sierpiński carpet. See the appendix for a brief erratum.
Using an algebraic point of view we present an introduction to the groupoid theory, that is, we give fundamental properties of groupoids as, uniqueness of inverses and properties of the identities, and study subgroupoids, wide subgroupoids and normal subgroupoids. We also present the isomorphism theorems for groupoids and as an applications we obtain the corresponding version of Zassenhaus Lemma and Jordan-Hölder Theorem for groupoids. Finally inspired by the Ehresmann-Schein-Nambooripad Theorem we improve a result of R. Exel concerning a one to one correspondence between partial actions of gr…
Associated to any finite flag complex L there is a right-angled Coxeter group W_L and a cubical complex Σ_L on which W_L acts properly and cocompactly. Its two most salient features are that (1) the link of each vertex of Σ_L is L and (2) Σ_L is contractible. It follows that if L is a triangulation of S^{n-1}, then Σ_L is a contractible n-manifold. We describe a program for proving the Singer Conjecture (on the vanishing of the reduced L^2-homology except in the middle dimension) in the case of Σ_L where L is a triangulation of S^{n-1}. The program succeeds when n < 5. This implies the Charney…
A theorem of Tits - Vinberg allows to build an action of a Coxeter group $Γ$ on a properly convex open set $Ω$ of the real projective space, thanks to the data $P$ of a polytope and reflection across its facets. We give sufficient conditions for such action to be of finite covolume, convex-cocompact or geometrically finite. We describe an hypothesis that make those conditions necessary. Under this hypothesis, we describe the Zariski closure of $Γ$, find the maximal $Γ$-invariant convex, when there is a unique $Γ$-invariant convex, when the convex $Ω$ is strictly convex, when we can find a $Γ$-…
Let $W$ be a right-angled Coxeter group corresponding to a finite non-discrete graph $\mathcal{G}$ with at least $3$ vertices. Our main theorem says that $\mathcal{G}^c$ is connected if and only if for any infinite index quasiconvex subgroup $H$ of $W$ and any finite subset $\{ γ_1, \ldots , γ_n \} \subset W \setminus H$ there is a surjection $f$ from $W$ to a finite alternating group such that $f (γ_i) \notin f (H)$. A corollary is that a right-angled Artin group splits as a direct product of cyclic groups and groups with many alternating quotients in the above sense. Similarly, finitely gene…
Given a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and a positive real multiparameter $\bq$, we study the "weighted $L^2$-cohomology groups," of a certain simplicial complex $Σ$ associated to $(W,S)$. These cohomology groups are Hilbert spaces, as well as modules over the Hecke algebra associated to $(W,S)$ and the multiparameter $q$. They have a "von Neumann dimension" with respect to the associated "Hecke - von Neumann algebra," $N_q$. The dimension of the $i^th$ cohomology group is denoted $b^i_q(Σ)$. It is a nonnegative real number which varies continuously with $q$. When $q$ is integral, the $b^i_q(Σ)$ are t…
In this paper we study finite groups which have Cayley isomorphism property with respect to Cayley maps, CIM-groups for a brief. We show that the structure of the CIM-groups is very restricted. It is described in Theorem~\ref{111015a} where a short list of possible candidates for CIM-groups is given. Theorem~\ref{111015c} provides concrete examples of infinite series of CIM-groups.
