If $M$ is a projective manifold in $P^N$, then one can associate to each one parameter subgroup $H$ of $SL(N+1)$ the Mumford $μ$ invariant. The manifold $M$ is Chow-Mumford stable if $μ$ is positive for all $H$. Tian has defined the notion of K-stability, and has shown it to be intimately related to the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics. The manifold $M$ is K-stable if $μ'$ is positive for all $H$, where $μ'$ is an invariant which is defined in terms of the Mabuchi K-energy. In this paper we derive an explicit formula for $μ'$ in the case where $M$ is a curve. The formula is similar to Mumford's formula for $μ$, and is likewise expressed in terms of the vertices of the Newton diagram of a basis of holomorphic sections for the hyperplane line bundle.
We show that a projective manifold is stable if and only if the Mabuchi energy is proper on the space of algebraic metrics. We show that stability implies finite automorphism group.
Let X be a smooth, linearly normal algebraic variety. It is shown that the Mabuchi energy of X restricted to the Bergman metrics is completely determined by the X-hyperdiscriminant of format (n-1) and the Chow form of X. As a corollary it is shown that the Mabuchi energy is bounded from below for all degenerations in G if and only if the hyperdiscriminant polytope dominates the Chow polytope for all maximal algebraic tori H of G .
We show that the Mabuchi energy of any polarized manifold (X,L) is (bounded below) proper on the full space of Kahler metrics in the first Chern class of L if and only if (X,L) is asymptotically (semi)stable. In particular it now follows from work of Xiuxiong Chen and Jinguri Cheng that there exists a cscK metric in the first Chern class of L if and only if (X,L) is asymptotically stable, provided the reduced automorphism group of (X,L) is finite.
In this paper, we study Mabuchi metrics on Fano manifolds. We prove that Mabuchi metrics exist if the modified Ding functional is proper modulo a reductive subgroup of its automorphism group. On the other hand, the inverse that Mabuchi metrics implies the properness is obtained by using Darvas-Rubinstein's properness principle. As an application, we establish a criterion for the existence of Mabuchi metrics on Fano group compactifications.
The purpose of this paper is to generalize the convexity of Mabuchi's functional to the conic setting. We first established a frame to study conic cscK metrics, and then the conic Mabuchi functional was introduced in such a way that conic cscK metrics are its critical points. Finally we proved the convexity of the conic Mabuchi functional along any conic geodesics.
We introduce a class of almost homogeneous varieties contained in the class of spherical varieties and containing horospherical varieties as well as complete symmetric varieties. We develop K{ä}hler geometry on these varieties, with applications to canonical metrics in mind, as a generalization of the Guillemin-Abreu-Donaldson geometry of toric varieties. Namely we associate convex functions with hermitian metrics on line bundles, and express the curvature form in terms of this function, as well as the corresponding Monge-Amp{è}re volume form and scalar curvature. We then provide an expression…
In the previous papers \cite{L1, L2} the author constructed Mabuchi and Aubin-Yau functionals over any complex surfaces and three-folds, respectively. Using the method in \cite{L2}, we construct those functionals over any complex manifolds of the complex dimension bigger than or equal to 2.
In this note we construct Mabuchi $\mathcal{L}^{\rm M}_ω$ functional and Aubin-Yau functionals $\mathcal{I}^{\rm AY}_ω, \mathcal{J}^{\rm AY}_ω$ on any compact complex surfaces, and establish a number of properties. Our construction coincides with the original one in the Kähler case.
In this paper we construct Mabuchi $\mathcal{L}^{\rm M}_ω$ functional and Aubin-Yau functionals $\mathcal{I}^{\rm AY}_ω, \mathcal{J}^{\rm AY}_ω$ on any compact complex three-folds. The method presented here will be used in the forthcoming paper \cite{L1} on the construction of those functionals on any compact complex manifolds, which generalizes the previous work \cite{L}.
We give a criterion for the coercivity of the Mabuchi functional for general Kähler classes on Fano manifolds in terms of Tian's alpha invariant. This generalises a result of Tian in the anti-canonical case implying the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric. We also prove the alpha invariant is a continuous function on the Kähler cone. As an application, we provide new Kähler classes on a general degree one del Pezzo surface for which the Mabuchi functional is coercive.
We prove the uniqueness, up to a pull-back by an element of a suitable subgroup of complex automorphisms, of the weighted extremal Kähler metrics on a compact Kähler manifold introduced in our previous work. This extends a result by Berman--Berndtsson and Chen--Paun--Zeng in the extremal Kähler case. Furthermore, we show that a weighted extremal Kähler metric is a global minimum of a suitable weighted version of the modified Mabuchi energy. This implies a suitable notion of weighted K-semistability of a Kähler manifold admitting a weighted extremal Kähler metric.
There are two parts of this paper. First, we discovered an explicit formula for the complex Hessian of the weighted log-Bergman kernel on a parallelogram domain, and utilised this formula to give a new proof about the strict convexity of the Mabuchi functional along a smooth geodesic. Second, when a C^{1,1}-geodesic connects two non-degenerate energy minimizers, we also proved this strict convexity, by showing that such a geodesic must be non-degenerate and smooth.
We prove that if a compact smooth polarized complex manifold admits in the corresponding Hodge Kähler class a conformally Kähler, Einstein--Maxwell metric, or more generally, a Kähler metric of constant $(ξ, a, p)$-scalar curvature, then this metric minimizes the $(ξ,a,p)$-Mabuchi functional. Our method of proof extends the approach introduced by Donaldson and developed by Li and Sano--Tipler, via finite dimensional approximations and generalized balanced metrics. As an application of our result and the recent construction of Koca--Tønnesen-Friedman, we describe the Kähler classes on a geometr…
Over the space of Kähler metrics associated to a fixed Kähler class, we first prove the lower bound of the energy functional $\tilde E^β$, then we provide the criterions of the geodesics rays to detect the lower bound of $\tilde {\mathfrak J}^β$-functional. They are used to obtain the properness of Mabuchi's $K$-energy. The criterions are examined by showing the convergence of the negative gradient flow of $\tilde {\mathfrak J}^β$-functional.
The purpose of this article is to study the strict convexity of the Mabuchi functional along a $C^{1,1}$-geodesic, with the aid of the $ε$-geodesics. We proved the $L^2$-convergence of the fiberwise volume element of the $ε$-geodesic. Moreover, the geodesic is proved to be uniformly fiberwise non-degenerate if the Mabuchi functional is $ε$-affine.
We are analysing the convexity and continuity properties of the Mabuchi functional along weak geodesics. The key technical point in our paper is the global approximation of weak geodesics obtained via a well-chosen family of Monge-Ampère equations.
An explicit seminorm $||f||_{#}$ on the vector space of Chow vectors of projective varieties is introduced, and shown to be a generalized Mabuchi energy functional for Chow varieties. The singularities of the Chow varieties give rise to currents supported on their singular loci, while the regular parts are shown to reproduce the Mabuchi energy functional of the corresponding projective variety. Thus the boundedness from below of the Mabuchi functional, and hence the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics, is related to the behavior of the current $[Y_s]$ and the seminorm $||f||_{#}$ along the or…
As a generalization of Kahler-Einstein metrics for Fano manifolds with nonvanishing Futaki invariant, Mabuchi solitons are critical points of a Calabi-type energy functional. We study their existence on toric Fano varieties and the underlying algebraic stability notion: relative Ding stability. As a toy model for a YTD type correspondence, a new feature is the emergence of a non-uniformly stable case. We show a partial coercivity for the modified Ding functionals in this case, and obtain singular Mabuchi solitons via a variational approach. In the unstable case, we determine the maximal destab…
For Fano manifolds T. Mabuchi introduced a generalization of the Kähler-Einstein metric, which is characterized as the critical point of the Ricci-Calabi functional. We show that a Fano manifold admits Mabuchi's metric if and only if it is uniformly relatively D-stable.
The J-flow is a parabolic flow on Kahler manifolds. It was defined by Donaldson in the setting of moment maps and by Chen as the gradient flow of the J-functional appearing in his formula for the Mabuchi energy. It is shown here that under a certain condition on the initial data, the J-flow converges to a critical metric. This is a generalization to higher dimensions of the author's previous work on Kahler surfaces. A corollary of this is the lower boundedness of the Mabuchi energy on Kahler classes satisfying a certain inequality when the first Chern class of the manifold is negative.
The J-flow of S. K. Donaldson and X. X. Chen is a parabolic flow on Kahler manifolds with two Kahler metrics. It is the gradient flow of the J-functional which appears in Chen's formula for the Mabuchi energy. We find a positivity condition in terms of the two metrics which is both necessary and sufficient for the convergence of the J-flow to a critical metric. We use this result to show that on manifolds with ample canonical bundle, the Mabuchi energy is proper on all Kahler classes in an open neighborhood of the canonical class defined by a positivity condition. This improves previous result…
We give a characterization of relative Ding stable toric Fano manifolds in terms of the behavior of the modified Ding functional. We call the corresponding behavior of the modified Ding functional the pseudo-boundedness from below. We also discuss the pseudo-boundedness of the Ding / Mabuchi functional of general Fano manifolds.
Yau conjectured that a Fano manifold admits a Kahler-Einstein metric if and only if it is stable in the sense of geometric invariant theory. There has been much progress on this conjecture by Tian, Donaldson and others. The Mabuchi energy functional plays a central role in these ideas. We study the E_k functionals introduced by X.X. Chen and G. Tian which generalize the Mabuchi energy. We show that if a Fano manifold admits a Kahler-Einstein metric then the functional E_1 is bounded from below, and, modulo holomorphic vector fields, is proper. This answers affirmatively a question raised by Ch…
This note discusses the higher K-energy functionals which were defined by Bando and Mabuchi, and integrate higher Futaki invariants. Two new formulas for the higher K-energy functionals are given, and the second K-energy is shown to be related to Donaldson's Lagrangian applied to metrics on the tangent bundle.
Consider a polarized complex manifold (X,L) and a ray of positive metrics on L defined by a positive metric on a test configuration for (X,L). For most of the common functionals in Kähler geometry, we prove that the slope at infinity along the ray is given by evaluating the non-Archimedean version of the functional (as defined in our earlier paper) at the non-Archimedean metric on L defined by the test configuration. Using this asymptotic result, we show that coercivity of the Mabuchi functional implies uniform K-stability.
We construct a path integral based on the coupling of the Liouville action and the Mabuchi K-energy on a one-dimensional complex manifold. To the best of our knowledge this is the first rigorous construction of such an object and this is done by means of probabilistic tools. Both functionals play an important role respectively in Riemannian geometry (in the case of surfaces) and Kähler geometry. As an output, we obtain a path integral whose Weyl anomaly displays the standard Liouville anomaly plus an additional K-energy term. Motivations come from theoretical physics where these type of path i…
We characterize the global maximizers of a certain non-local functional defined on the space of all positively curved metrics on an ample line bundle L over a Kahler manifold X. This functional is an adjoint version, introduced by Berndtsson, of Donaldson's L-functional and generalizes the Ding-Tian functional whose critical points are Kahler-Einstein metrics of positive Ricci curvature. Applications to (1) analytic torsions on Fano manifolds (2) Chern-Simons-Higgs vortices on tori and (3) Kahler geometry are given. In particular, proofs of conjectures of (1) Gillet-Soulé and Fang (concerning …
Let L be an ample bundle over a compact complex manifold X. Fix a Hermitian metric in L whose curvature defines a Kähler metric on X. The Hessian of Mabuchi energy is a fourth-order elliptic operator D on functions which arises in the study of scalar curvature. We quantise D by the Hessian E(k) of balancing energy, a function appearing in the study of balanced embeddings. E(k) is defined on the space of Hermitian endomorphisms of H^0(X, L^k), endowed with the L^2-innerproduct. We first prove that the leading order term in the asymptotic expansion of E(k) is D. We next show that if Aut(X,L) is …
The Mabuchi K-energy map is exhibited as a singular metric on the refined CM polarization of any equivariant family $\mathbf{X}\overset{p}{\to} S$. Consequently we show that the generalized Futaki invariant is the leading term in the asymptotics of the reduced K-energy of the generic fiber of the map $p$. Properness of the K-energy implies that the generalized Futaki invariant is strictly negative.
In this paper, we prove that the transverse Mabuchi K-energy functional is convex along the weak geodesic in the space of Sasakian metrics. As an application, we obtain the uniqueness of constant scalar curvature Sasakian metrics modulo automorphisms for the transverse holomorphic structure.
Let (X,L) be a polarized projective complex manifold. We show, by a simple toric one-dimensional example, that Mabuchi's K-energy functional on the geodesically complete space of bounded positive (1,1)-forms in the first Chern class of L, endowed with the Mabuchi metric, is not strictly convex modulo automorphisms. However, under some further assumptions the strict convexity in question does hold in the toric case. This leads to a uniqueness result saying that a finite energy minimizer of the K-energy (which exists on any toric polarized manifold (X,L) which is uniformly K-stable) is uniquely …
We formulate a notion of K-stability for Kähler manifolds, and prove one direction of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in this setting. More precisely, we prove that the Mabuchi functional being bounded below (resp. coercive) implies K-semistability (resp. uniformly K-stable). In particular this shows that the existence of a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric implies K-semistability, and K-stability if one assumes the automorphism group is discrete. We also show how Stoppa's argument holds in the Kähler case, giving a simpler proof of this K-stability statement.
We prove that the existence of a Kahler-Einstein metric on a Fano manifold is equivalent to the properness of the energy functionals defined by Bando, Chen, Ding, Mabuchi and Tian on the set of Kahler metrics with positive Ricci curvature. We also prove that these energy functionals are bounded from below on this set if and only if one of them is. This answers two questions raised by X.-X. Chen. As an application, we obtain a new proof of the classical Moser-Trudinger-Onofri inequality on the two-sphere, as well as describe a canonical enlargement of the space of Kahler potentials on which thi…
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold with a given ample line bundle $L$. In \cite{Don05}, Donaldson proved that the Calabi energy of a Kähler metric in $c_1(L)$ is bounded from below by the supremum of a normalized version of the minus Donaldson--Futaki invariants of test configurations of $(X,L)$. He also conjectured that the bound is sharp. In this paper, we prove a metric analogue of Donaldson's conjecture, we show that if we enlarge the space of test configurations to the space of geodesic rays in $\mathcal{E}^2$ and replace the Donaldson--Futaki invariant by the radial Mabuchi K-energy $\…
We establish the convexity of Mabuchi's K-energy functional along weak geodesics in the space of Kahler potentials on a compact Kahler manifold thus confirming a conjecture of Chen and give some applications in Kahler geometry, including a proof of the uniqueness of constant scalar curvature metrics (or more generally extremal metrics) modulo automorphisms. The key ingredient is a new local positivity property of weak solutions to the homogenuous Monge-Ampere equation on a product domain, whose proof uses plurisubharmonic variation of Bergman kernels.
Let (M,J) be an almost complex manifold. We show that the infinite-dimensional space Tau of totally real submanifolds in M carries a natural connection. This induces a canonical notion of geodesics in Tau and a corresponding definition of when a functional, defined on Tau, is convex. Geodesics in Tau can be expressed in terms of families of J-holomorphic curves in M; we prove a uniqueness result and study their existence. When M is Kähler we define a canonical functional on Tau; it is convex if M has non-positive Ricci curvature. Our construction is formally analogous to the notion of geodesic…
We derive an explicit formula for the asymptotic slope of the Aubin-Yau functional along a Bergman geodesic on a surface of complex dimension 2, extending the work of Phong-Sturm on Riemann surfaces. This is equivalent to an explicit calculation of the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of a test configuration. The slope is given as a rational linear combination of period integrals of rational functions that sum to a rational number. The result gives a way to check directly whether a two dimensional projective variety is K-stable.
Let X be a smooth, linearly normal n dimensional complex projective variety. Assume that the projective dual of X has codimension one with defining polynomial D(X). In this paper the log of the norm of D(X) is expressed as the restriction to the Bergman metrics of an energy functional on X. We show how, for smooth plane curves, this energy functional reduces to the standard action functionals of Kahler geometry.
We develop a variational calculus for a certain free energy functional on the space of all probability measures on a Kahler manifold X. This functional can be seen as a generalization of Mabuchi's K-energy functional and its twisted versions to more singular situations. Applications to Monge-Ampère equations of mean field type, twisted Kahler-Einstein metrics and Moser-Trudinger type inequalities on Kahler manifolds are given. Tian's α- invariant is generalized to singular measures, allowing i particular the construction of Kahler-Einstein metrics with positive Ricci curvature that are singula…
In this short note, we study the asymptotic property of Huisken's functional for mean curvature flow on the minimal submanifolds of Euclidean space. We prove that the limit of Huisken's functional equals to the extrinsic asymptotic volume ratio on the minimal submanifold of Euclidean space.
We compute the Hessian of quantized Ding functionals and give an elementary proof for the convexity of quantized Ding functionals along Bergman geodesics from the view point of projective geometry. We study also the asymptotic behavior of the Hessian using the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization.
We analyze critical points of two functionals of Riemannian metrics on compact manifolds with boundary. These functionals are motivated by formulae of the mass functionals of asymptotically flat and asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds.
Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact connected Kähler manifold and denote by $(\mathcal E^p,d_p)$ the metric completion of the space of Kähler potentials $\mathcal H_ω$ with respect to the $L^p$-type path length metric $d_p$. First, we show that the natural analytic extension of the (twisted) Mabuchi K-energy to $\mathcal E^p$ is a $d_p$-lsc functional that is convex along finite energy geodesics. Second, following the program of J. Streets, we use this to study the asymptotics of the weak (twisted) Calabi flow inside the CAT(0) metric space $(\mathcal E^2,d_2)$. This flow exists for all times and coincid…
This paper introduces a functional generalizing Perelman's weighted Hilbert-Einstein action and the Dirichlet energy for spinors. It is well-defined on a wide class of non-compact manifolds; on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds, the functional is shown to admit a unique critical point, which is necessarily of min-max type, and Ricci flow is its gradient flow. The proof is based on variational formulas for weighted spinorial functionals, valid on all spin manifolds with boundary.
In this paper, we investigate the behavior of ADM mass and Einstein-Hilbert functional under the Yamabe flow. Through studying the Yamabe flow by weighted spaces, we show that ADM mass and Einstein-Hilbert functional are well-defined and monotone non-increasing under the Yamabe flow on $n$-dimensional, $n\geq 3$, asymptotically flat manifolds. In the case of dimension $n=3$ or 4, we obtain that the ADM mass is invariant under the Yamabe flow and the Yamabe flow is the gradient flow of Einstein-Hilbert functional on asymptotically flat manifolds
