This note discusses the higher K-energy functionals which were defined by Bando and Mabuchi, and integrate higher Futaki invariants. Two new formulas for the higher K-energy functionals are given, and the second K-energy is shown to be related to Donaldson's Lagrangian applied to metrics on the tangent bundle.
We use the equivariant localization formula to prove that the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of a compact smooth (K{ä}hler) test configuration coincides with the Futaki invariant of the induced action on the central fiber when this fiber is smooth or have orbifold singularities. We also localize the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of the deformation to the normal cone.
In this paper, the Bando-Futaki invariants on hypersurfaces are derived in terms of the degree of the defining polynomials, the dimension of the underlying projective space, and the given holomorphic vector field. In addition, the holomorphic invariant introduced by Tian and Chen (Ricci Flow on Kähler-Einstein surfaces) is proven to be the Futaki invariant on compact Kähler manifolds with positive first Chern class.
We prove the expansion formula for the classical Futaki invariants on the blowup of Kähler surfaces, which explains the balancing condition of Arezzo-Pacard. The relation with Stoppa's result is also discussed.
In this note, we consider a sequence of test configurations compatible with a Kaehler metric in $c_1(L)$ on a polarized algebraic manifold $(X,L)$. Then an explicit formula for the Donaldson-Futaki invariant $F_1$ for the sequence will be given.
In this paper, we give a new version of the modified Futaki invariant for a test configuration associated to the soliton action on a Fano manifold. Our version will naturally come from toric test configurations defined by Donaldson for toric manifolds. As an application, we show that the modified $K$-energy is proper for toric invariant Kähler potentials on a toric Fano manifold.
We establish a lower bound for the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of optimal degenerations produced by the Kähler-Ricci flow in terms of the greatest Ricci lower bound on arbitrary Fano manifolds. As an application, we can generalize the finiteness of the Futaki invariants on Kähler-Ricci solitons obtained by Guo-Phong-Song-Sturm to the space of all Fano manifolds. Also, we discuss the relation to Hisamoto's inequality for the infimum of the $H$-functional.
It is known that a necessary condition for the existence of Kähler-Ricci solitons is the vanishing of the modified Futaki invariant introduced by Tian-Zhu. In a recent work of Berman-Nyström, it was generalized for (singular) Fano varieties and the notion of algebro-geometric stability of the pair $(M,V)$ of a Fano manifold $M$ and a holomorphic vector field $V$ was introduced. In this paper, we propose a method of computing the modified Futaki invariant for Fano complete intersections in projective spaces.
In this paper, we establish several sufficient and necessary conditions for the convergence of a Kähler-Ricci flow, on a Kähler manifold with positive first Chern class, to a Kähler-Einstein metric (or a shrinking Kähler-Ricci soliton).
We present an analytic proof of the relationship between the Calabi-Futaki invariant for a Kähler manifold relative to a holomorphic vector field with a nondegenerate zero and the corresponding invariant of its blowup at that zero, restricting to the case that zeros on the exceptional divisor are isolated. This extends the results of Li and Shi for Kähler surfaces. We also clarify a hypothesis regarding the normal form of the vector field near its zero. An algebro-geometric proof was given by Székelyhidi by reducing the situation to the case of projective manifolds for rational data and using …
In this note, given a polarized algebraic manifold $(X,L)$, we define the Donaldson-Futaki invariant for a sequence of test configurations for $(X,L)$ with exponents tending to infinity. This then allows us to define a strong version of K-stability or K-semistability for $(X,L)$. In particular, $(X,L)$ will be shown to be K-semistable in this strong sense if the polarization class $c_1(L)$ admits a constant scalar curvature Kaehler metric.
We show that the Einstein-Hilbert functional, as a functional on the space of Reeb vector fields, detects the vanishing Sasaki-Futaki invariant. In particular, this provides an obstruction to the existence of a constant scalar curvature Sasakian metric. As an application we prove that K-semistable polarized Sasaki manifold has vanishing Sasaki-Futaki invariant. We then apply this result to show that under the right conditions on the Sasaki join manifolds of [7] a polarized Sasaki manifold is K-semistable if only if it has constant scalar curvature.
In this note we study the localization of Futaki-Morita integrals at isolated degenerate zeros by giving a streamlined exposition in the spirit of Bott and implement the localization procedure for a holomorphic vector field on $CP^n$ with a maximally degenerate zero, giving an essentially unique formula for the Futaki-Morita integral invariants without using a summation over multiple points. In a coming paper we will apply similar calculations to the Calabi-Futaki invariant of a Kähler blowup.
We study the convergence of the Kähler-Ricci flow on a compact Kähler manifold $(M,J)$ with positive first Chern class $c_1(M;J)$ and vanished Futaki invariant on $πc_1(M;J)$. As the application we establish a criterion for the stability of the Kähler-Ricci flow (with perturbed complex structure) around a Kähler-Einstein metric with positive scalar curvature, under certain local stable condition on the dimension of holomorphic vector fields. In particular this gives a stability theorem for the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on a Kähler manifold with possibly nontrivial holomorphic vector…
The interpretation, due to T. Mabuchi, of the classical Futaki invariant of Fano toric manifolds is extended to the case of the Generalized Futaki invariant, introduced by W. Ding and G. Tian, of almost Fano toric varieties. As an application it is shown that the real part of the Generalized Futaki invariant is positive for all degenerations of the Fano manifold V_{38}, obtained by intersection of the Veronese embedding of ${\bf P}^3\times{\bf P}^2 \subset {\bf P}^{11}$ with codimension-two hyperplanes.
We study the algebraic properties of the generalized Futaki invariant of an almost Fano variety and prove that it is in fact a pushforward to a point of an appropriate equivariant Chow cohomology class of the variety. This allows us to use Bott-type formulae for calculating the invariant. We show this use on some examples.
The Mabuchi K-energy map is exhibited as a singular metric on the refined CM polarization of any equivariant family $\mathbf{X}\overset{p}{\to} S$. Consequently we show that the generalized Futaki invariant is the leading term in the asymptotics of the reduced K-energy of the generic fiber of the map $p$. Properness of the K-energy implies that the generalized Futaki invariant is strictly negative.
In this paper we compute the Futaki invariant of adiabatic Kaehler classes on resolutions of Kaehler orbifolds with isolated singularities. Combined with previous existence results of extremal metrics by Arezzo-Lena-Mazzieri, this gives a number of new existence and non-existence results for cscK metrics.
We study the Futaki invariant and the Mabuchi K-energy of a Kähler manifold $M$ using the Deligne pairing technique developed in earlier papers. We first prove a rather simple characterization of the Futaki character: The Futaki character on a Q-Fano variety is the eigenvalue of the action of $Aut(M)$ on $Chow(M)$, the Chow point of $M$. We use this to give a new proof of Lu's theorem on the Futaki invariant of a complete intersection. In the last theorem, we prove a non-linear generalization of Lu's formula which expresses the K-energy of a smooth complete intersection as a singular norm on t…
In this work we prove a residue formula for Morita-Futaki-Bott invariant with respect any holomorphic vector fields with isolated (possibly degenerated) singularities in terms of Grothendieck's residues.
In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the Futaki invariants of complete intersections. The result is new in the case where the variety is smooth or has orbifold singularities.
Let X be a Fano manifold. G.Tian proves that if X admits a Kaehler-Einstein metric, then it satisfies two different stability conditions: one involving the Futaki invariant of a special degeneration of X, the other Hilbert-Mumford-stability of X w.r.t. a certain polarization. He conjectures that each of these conditions is also sufficient for the existence of such a metric. If this is true, then in particular the two stability conditions would be equivalent. We show that for Fano hypersurfaces in projective space, where due to the work of Lu and Yotov an explicit formula for the Futaki invaria…
Odaka and Wang proved the intersection formula for the Donaldson-Futaki invariant. In this paper, we generalize this result for the higher Futaki invariants which are obstructions to asymptotic Chow semistability.
We derive an explicit formula for the asymptotic slope of the Aubin-Yau functional along a Bergman geodesic on a surface of complex dimension 2, extending the work of Phong-Sturm on Riemann surfaces. This is equivalent to an explicit calculation of the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of a test configuration. The slope is given as a rational linear combination of period integrals of rational functions that sum to a rational number. The result gives a way to check directly whether a two dimensional projective variety is K-stable.
In this note we revisit and extend few classical and recent results on the definition and use of the Futaki invariant in connection with the existence problem for Kaehler constant scalar curvature metrics on polarized algebraic manifolds, especially in the case of resolution of singularities. The general inspiration behind this work is no doubt the beautiful 1992 paper by Ding and Tian which contains the germs of a huge amount of the successive developments in this fundamental problem, and it is a great pleasure to dedicate this to Professor G. Tian on the occasion of his birthday!
We study obstructions to the existence of closed Fedosov's star products on a given Kähler manifold. In our previous paper, we proved that the Levi-Civita connection of a Kähler manifold will produce a closed (in the sense of Connes-Flato-Sternheimer) Fedosov's star product only if it is a zero of the Cahen-Gutt moment map on the space of symplectic connections. By analogy with the Futaki invariant obstructing the existence of cscK metrics, we build an obstruction for the existence of zero of the moment map and hence for the existence of closed Fedosov's star products on a Kähler manifold.
We show that a Kähler-Ricci soliton on a Fano manifold can always be smoothly approximated by a sequence of relative anticanonically balanced metrics, also called quantized Kähler-Ricci solitons. The proof uses a semiclassical estimate on the spectral gap of an equivariant Berezin transform to extend a strategy due to Donaldson, and can be seen as the quantization of a method due to Tian and Zhu, using quantized Futaki invariants as obstructions for quantized Kähler-Ricci solitons. As corollaries, we recover the uniqueness of Kähler-Ricci solitons up to automorphisms, and show how our result a…
We study the scalar curvature of Kähler metrics that have cone singularities along a divisor, with a particular focus on certain specific classes of such metrics that enjoy some curvature estimates. Our main result is that, on the projective completion of a pluricanonical bundle over a product of Kähler--Einstein Fano manifolds with the second Betti number 1, momentum-constructed constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics with cone singularities along the $\infty$-section exist if and only if the log Futaki invariant vanishes on the fibrewise $\mathbb{C}^*$-action, giving a supporting evidence t…
We find a new obstruction to the existence of solutions of the Hull-Strominger system, which goes beyond the balanced property of the Calabi-Yau manifold $(X,Ω)$ and the Mumford-Takemoto slope stability of the bundle over it. The basic principle is the construction of a (possibly indefinite) Hermitian-Einstein metric on the holomorphic string algebroid associated to a solution of the system, provided that the connection $\nabla$ on the tangent bundle is Hermitian-Yang Mills. Using this, we define a family of Futaki invariants obstructing the existence of solutions in a given balanced class. Ou…
Let (X,Ω) be a closed polarized complex manifold, g be an extremal metric on X that represents the Kähler class Ω, and G be a compact connected subgroup of the isometry group Isom(X,g). Assume that the Futaki invariant relative to G is nondegenerate at g. Consider a smooth family $(M \to B)$ of polarized complex deformations of (X,Ω)\simeq (M_0,Θ_0) provided with a holomorphic action of G with trivial action on B. Then for every t\in B sufficiently small, there exists an h^{1,1}(X)-dimensional family of extremal Kaehler metrics on M_t whose Kähler classes are arbitrarily close to Θ_t. We apply…
We give a new formula for the energy functionals E_k defined by Chen-Tian, and discuss the relations between these functionals. We also apply our formula to give a new proof of the fact that the holomorphic invariants corresponding to the E_k functionals are equal to the Futaki invariant.
We give a formula of the Donaldson-Futaki invariants for certain type of semi test configurations, which essentially generalizes Ross-Thomas' slope theory. The positivity (resp. non-negativity) of those "a priori special" Donaldson-Futaki invariants implies K-stability (resp. K-semistability). We show its applicability by proving K-(semi)stability of certain polarized varieties with semi-log-canonical singularities, generalizing some results by Ross-Thomas.
We consider the problem of existence of constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics on complete intersections of sections of vector bundles. In particular we give general formulas relating the Futaki invariant of such a manifold to the weight of sections defining it and to the Futaki invariant of the ambient manifold. As applications we give a new Mukai-Umemura-Tian like example of Fano 5-fold admitting no Kaehler-Einstein metric and a strong evidence of K-stability of complete intersections on Grassmannians.
For test configurations, the Donaldson-Futaki invariant F_1 is well-known. In this note, its refinement will be discussed. Then we see that Li-Xu's pathology doesn't occur, since their example of a non-normal test configuration, with trivial normalization, actually has non-vanishing F_1 in this refined sense.
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold with a given ample line bundle $L$. In \cite{Don05}, Donaldson proved that the Calabi energy of a Kähler metric in $c_1(L)$ is bounded from below by the supremum of a normalized version of the minus Donaldson--Futaki invariants of test configurations of $(X,L)$. He also conjectured that the bound is sharp. In this paper, we prove a metric analogue of Donaldson's conjecture, we show that if we enlarge the space of test configurations to the space of geodesic rays in $\mathcal{E}^2$ and replace the Donaldson--Futaki invariant by the radial Mabuchi K-energy $\…
We study logarithmic K-stability for pairs by extending the formula for Donaldson-Futaki invariants to log setting. We also provide algebro-geometric counterparts of recent results of existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities.
In this paper we introduce higher extremal Kahler metrics. We provide an example of the same on a minimal ruled surface. We also prove a perturbation result that implies that there are non-trivial examples of higher constant scalar curvature metrics, which are basically metrics where the top Chern form is harmonic. We also give a relatively short proof of a formula due to Liu for the Bando-Futaki invariants (which are obstructions for the existence of harmonic Chern forms) of hypersurfaces in projective space.
In this paper we extend the notion of Futaki invariant to big and nef classes in such a way that it defines a continuous function on the \K\ cone up to the boundary. We apply this concept to prove that reduced normal crossing singularities are sufficient to check $K$-semistability. A similar improvement on Donaldson's lower bound for Calabi energy is given.
We express two CR invariant surface area elements in terms of quantities in pseudohermitian geometry. We deduce the Euler-Lagrange equations of the associated energy functionals. Many solutions are given and discussed. In relation to the singular CR Yamabe problem, we show that one of the energy functionals appears as the coefficient (up to a constant multiple) of the log term in the associated volume renormalization.
We give a criterion for the coercivity of the Mabuchi functional for general Kähler classes on Fano manifolds in terms of Tian's alpha invariant. This generalises a result of Tian in the anti-canonical case implying the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric. We also prove the alpha invariant is a continuous function on the Kähler cone. As an application, we provide new Kähler classes on a general degree one del Pezzo surface for which the Mabuchi functional is coercive.
In the context of generalized geometry we first show how the Courant bracket helps to define connections with skew torsion and then investigate a five-dimensional invariant functional and its associated geometry. A Hamiltonian flow arising from this corresponds to a version of the Nahm equations using the Courant bracket, and we investigate the six-dimensional geometrical structure this describes.
We show, that higher analogs of the Willmore functional, defined on the space of immersions M^2\rightarrow R^3, where M^2 is a two-dimensional torus, R^3 is the 3-dimensional Euclidean space are invariant under conformal transformations of R^3. This hypothesis was formulated recently by I.A.Taimanov (dg-ga/9610013). Higher analogs of the Willmore functional are defined in terms of the Modified Novikov-Veselov hierarchy. This soliton hierarchy is associated with the zero-energy scattering problem for the two-dimensional Dirac operator.
