The moduli space $\M_{g,n}$ of $n-$pointed stable curves of genus $g$ is stratified by the topological type of the curves being parametrized: the closure of the locus of curves with $k$ nodes has codimension $k$. The one dimensional components of this stratification are smooth rational curves (whose numerical equivalence classes are) called F-curves. The F-conjecture asserts that a divisor on $\M_{g,n}$ is ample if and only if it positively intersects the $F-$curves.
In this paper the F-conjecture on $\M_{g,n}$ is reduced to showing that certain divisors in $\M_{0,N}$ for $N \leq g+n$ are equivalent to the sum of the canonical divisor plus an effective divisor supported on the boundary. As an application of the reduction, numerical criteria are given which if satisfied by a divisor $D$ on $\M_g$, show that $D$ is ample. Additionally, an algorithm is described to check that a given divisor is ample.
Using a computer program called Nef Wizard, written by Daniel Krashen (http://www.yale.edu/users/dkrashen/nefwiz), one can use the criteria and the algorithm to verify the conjecture for low genus. This is done on $\M_g$ for $g \le 24$, more than doubling the known cases of the conjecture and showing it is true for the first genus such that $\M_g$ is known to be of general type.
If the log canonical divisor on a projective variety with only Kawamata log terminal singularities is numerically equivalent to some semi-ample $\mathbf{Q}$-divisor, then it is semi-ample.
We introduce a notion of ampleness for subschemes of higher codimension using the theory of q-ample line bundles. We also investigate certain geometric properties satisfied by ample subvarieties, e.g. the Lefschetz hyperplane theorems and numerical positivity. Using these properties, we also construct a counterexample to the converse of the Andreotti-Grauert vanishing theorem.
In this short note we explain how to construct resolutions or regular alterations admitting an ample exceptional divisor, assuming the existence of projective resolutions or regular alterations. In particular, this implies the existence of such resolutions for arithmetic three-dimensional singularities.
We study the cones of q-ample divisors on smooth complex varieties. In favourable cases, we identify a part where the closure of this cone and the nef cone have the same boundary. This is especially interesting for Fano (or almost Fano) varieties.
Let $X$ be a projective manifold of dimension $n$. Suppose that $T_X$ contains an ample subsheaf. We show that $X$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^n$. As an application, we derive the classification of projective manifolds containing a $\mathbb{P}^r$-bundle as an ample divisor by the recent work of D.~Litt.
We define and study positivity (nefness, amplitude, bigness and pseudo-effectiveness) for Weil divisors on normal projective varieties. We prove various characterizations, vanishing and non-vanishing theorems for cohomology, global generation statements, and a result related to log Fano.
Given a smooth projective curve X, we give effective very ampleness bounds for generalized theta divisors on the moduli spaces $SU_X(r,d)$ and $U_X(r,d)$ of semistable vector bundles of rank r and degree d on X with fixed, respectively arbitrary, determinant.
In this paper we consider ideal sheaves associated to the singular loci of a divisor in a linear system $|L|$ of an ample line bundle on a complex abelian variety. We prove an effective result on their (continuous) global generation, after suitable twists by powers of $L$. Moreover we show that similar results hold for subvarieties of a complex abelian variety.
Kollár gave a series of examples of rational surfaces of Picard number $1$ with ample canonical divisor having cyclic singularities. In this paper, we construct several series of new examples in a geometric way, i.e., by blowing up several times inside a configuration of curves on the projective plane and then by contracting chains of rational curves. One series of our examples have the same singularities as Kollár's examples.
Let $(X,Δ)$ be a projective log canonical pair such that $Δ\geq A$ where $A \geq 0$ is an ample $\mathbb{R}$-divisor. We prove that either $(X,Δ)$ has a good minimal model or a Mori fibre space. Moreover, if $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial, then any Log Minimal Model Program on $K_X+Δ$ with scaling terminates. As an application we prove that a log Fano type variety $X$ with $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial log canonical singularities is a Mori dream space.
We introduce a new technique for proving positivity of certain divisor classes on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$ and its weighted variants. Our methods give an unconditional description of the spaces of symmetric weighted pointed rational curves as log canonical models of $\bar{M}_{0,n}$.
In this short note, we consider the conjecture that the log canonical divisor (resp. the anti-log canonical divisor) $K_X + Δ$ (resp. $-(K_X + Δ)$) on a pair $(X, Δ)$ consisting of a complex projective manifold $X$ and a reduced simply normal crossing divisor $Δ$ on $X$ is ample if it is numerically positive. More precisely, we prove the conjecture for $K_X + Δ$ with $Δ\neq 0$ in dimension 4 and for $-(K_X + Δ)$ with $Δ\neq 0$ in dimension 3 or 4.
The philosophy that ``a projective manifold is more special than any of its smooth hyperplane sections" was one of the classical principles of projective geometry. Lefschetz type results and related vanishing theorems were among the typically used techniques. We shall survey most of the problems, results and conjectures in this area, using the modern setting of ample divisors, and (some aspects of) Mori theory.
We introduce a homological Lefschetz conjecture on (rational) Chow groups, which can be deduced from some well known conjectures, and illustrate it by a series of key examples. We then prove the injectivity of the push-forward morphism on Chow groups, induced by the closed embedding of the Theta divisor in it's Jacobian $J(C)$. Here $C$ is a smooth irreducible complex projective curve.
The paper reviews recent developments in the study of Alexander invariants of quasi-projective manifolds using methods of singularity theory. Several results in topology of the complements to singular plane curves and hypersurfaces in projective space extended to the case of curves on simply connected smooth projective surfaces.
We study the homotopy groups of complements to reducible divisors on non-singular projective varieties with ample components and isolated non normal crossings. We prove a vanishing theorem generalizing conditions for commutativity of the fundamental groups. The calculation of supports of non vanishing homotopy groups as modules over the fundamental group in terms of the geometry of the locus of non-normal crossings is discussed. We review previous work on the local study of isolated non-normal crossings and relate the motivic zeta function to the local polytopes of quasiadjunction. As an appli…
The article proves the Infinitesimal Torelli theorem for surfaces subject to the following conditions: 1) the canonical bundle of a surface is ample and generated by its global sections, 2)the geometric genus $p_g \geq 4$, 3) the irregularity $q=0$ . The main novelty is a realization of the Kodaira-Spencer classes lying in the kernel of the cohomology cup-product controlling the derivative of the period map of weight 2 in the category of the coherent sheaves of a surface.
A broadly applicable geometric approach for constructing nef divisors on blow ups of algebraic surfaces at n general points is given; it works for all surfaces in all characteristics for any n. This construction is used to obtain substantial improvements for currently known lower bounds for n point Seshadri constants. Remarks are included about a range of applications to classical problems involving linear systems on P2.
In previous papers we define certain Lagrangian shadows of ample divisors in algebraic varieties. In the present brief note an existence condition is discussed for these Lagrangian shadows.
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $D$ be a simple normal crossing divisor. If $D$ is the support of some effective $k$-ample divisor, we show $$ H^q(X,Ω^p_X(\log D))=0,\quad \text{for}\quad p+q>n+k.$$
We give a condition for certain divisors on the blow up of P^3 at points in general position to be ample. The result extends a theorem of G. Xu on the blow up of the projective plane.
We prove a gluing theorem which allows to construct an ample divisor on a rational surface from two given ample divisors on simpler surfaces. This theorem combined with the Cremona action on the ample cone gives rise to an algorithm for constructing new ample divisors. We then propose a conjecture relating continued fractions approximations and Seshadri-like constants of line bundles over rational surfaces. By applying our algorithm recursively we verify our conjecture in many cases and obtain new asymptotic estimates on these constants. Finally, we explain the intuition behind the gluing theo…
We introduce a conjecture on homological mirror symmetry relating the symplectic topology of the complement of a smooth ample divisor in a K3 surface to algebraic geometry of type III degenerations, and prove it when the degree of the divisor is either 2 or 4.
We study $l$-very ample, ample and semi-ample divisors on the blown-up projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ in a collection of points in general position. We establish Fujita's conjectures for all ample divisors with the number of points bounded above by $2n$ and for an infinite family of ample divisors with an arbitrary number of points.
In this article we give a general approach to the following analogue of Shafarevich's conjecture for some polarized algebraic varieties; suppose that we fix a type of an algebraic variety and look at families of such type of varieties over a fixed Riemann surface with fixed points over which we have singular varieties, then one can ask if the set of such families, up to isomorphism, is finite. In this paper we give a general approach to such types of problems. The main observation is the following; suppose that the moduli space of a fixed type of algebraic polarized variety exists and suppose …
The main object of the present paper is a numerical criterion determining when a Weil divisor of a $\Q$--factorial complete toric variety admits a positive multiple Cartier divisor which is either numerically effective (nef) or ample. It is a consequence of $\Z$--linear interpretation of Gale duality and se\-con\-dary fan as developed in several previous papers of us. As a byproduct we get a computation of the Cartier index of a Weil divisor and a numerical characterization of weak $\Q$--Fano, $\Q$--Fano, Gorenstein, weak Fano and Fano toric varieties. Several examples are then given and studi…
In this paper, we study properties of Weil height functions associated with numerically trivial divisors. It helps us to define the fractional limit of $h_E$ with respect to $h_D$ on $U$, with $D$ ample: \[ \Flim_D(E,U) := \liminf_{\substack{P \in U h_D(P) \rightarrow \infty}}\dfrac{h_E(P)}{h_D(P)}. \] The value of $\Flim_D(E,U)$ contains numerical information about a divisor $E$, enough to determine whether $E$ is ample, numerically effective or pseudo-effective.
Let $\mathcal{V}$ be an integral normal complex projective variety of dimension $n\geq 3$ and denote by $\mathcal{L}$ an ample line bundle on $\mathcal{V}$. By imposing that the linear system $|\mathcal{L}|$ contains an element $A=A_{1}+...+A_{r}, r\geq 1$, where all the $A_{i}$'s are distinct effective Cartier divisors with Pic$(A_i)=\mathbb{Z}$, we show that such a $\mathcal{V}$ is as special as the components $A_i$ of $A\in |\mathcal{L}|$. After making a list of some consequences about the positivity of the components $A_i$, we characterize pairs $(\mathcal{V}, \mathcal{L})$ as above when e…
In Butler, J.Differential Geom. 39 (1):1--34,1994, the author gives a sufficient condition for a line bundle associated with a divisor D to be normally generated on $X=P(E)$ where E is a vector bundle over a smooth curve C. A line bundle which is ample and normally generated is automatically very ample. Therefore the condition found in Butler's work, together with Miyaoka's well known ampleness criterion, give a sufficient condition for the very ampleness of D on X. This work is devoted to the study of numerical criteria for very ampleness of divisors D which do not satisfy the above criterion…
Suppose X is a projective variety, which needs not be smooth, and L an ample divisor on X. We show that there are integers c and b such that for any nonnegative integer p, L^d is normally generated and embeds X as a variety who defining ideal has linear syzygies upto the p-th step (i.e. L^d has property N_p) for all d >= cp + b.
In the framework of Special Bohr - Sommerfeld geometry it was established that an ample divisor in compact algebraic variety can define almost canonically certain real submanifold which is lagrangian with respect to the corresponding Kahler form. It is natural to call it "lagrangian shadow"; below we emphasize this correspondence and present some simple examples, old and new. In particular we show that for irreducible divisors from the linear system $\vert - \frac{1}{2} K_{F^3} \vert$ on the full flag variety $F^3$ their lagrangian shadows are Gelfand - Zeytlin type lagrangian 3 - spheres.
Let $X$ be the moduli space of semistable rank 2 vector bundles over a smooth curve C of genus $g \ge 2$ and $θ: X \to PH^0(L)^*$ be the map associated to the generalized theta divisor L on X. We prove that for C not hyperelliptic, the map $θ$ is injective and the differential of $θ$ is injective at smooth points of X.
In the noncommutative geometry of Artin, Van den Bergh, and others, the twisted homogeneous coordinate ring is one of the basic constructions. Such a ring is defined by a $σ$-ample divisor, where $σ$ is an automorphism of a projective scheme X. Many open questions regarding $σ$-ample divisors have remained. We derive a relatively simple necessary and sufficient condition for a divisor on X to be $σ$-ample. As a consequence, we show right and left $σ$-ampleness are equivalent and any associated noncommutative homogeneous coordinate ring must be noetherian and have finite, integral GK-dimension.…
Serrrano's Conjecture says that if $L$ is a strictly nef line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$, then $K_X+tL$ is ample for $ t > dim X+1$. In this paper I will prove a few cases of this conjecture. I will also prove a generalized version of this conjecture (due to Campana, Chen and Peternell) for surfaces. In the last section, assuming the SHGH conjecture, I will give a series of examples of strictly nef non ample divisors on surfaces of arbitary Kodaira dimension.
We study the Albanese image of a compact Kähler manifold whose geometric genus is one. We prove that if the Albanese map is not surjective, then the manifold maps surjectively onto an ample divisor in some abelian variety, and in many cases the ample divisor is a theta divisor. With a further natural assumption on the topology of the manifold, we prove that the manifold is an algebraic fiber space over a genus two curve. Finally we apply these results to study the geometry of a compact Kähler manifold which has the same Hodge numbers as those of an abelian variety of the same dimension.
We give a criterion for a nef divisor $D$ to be semiample on a Calabi--Yau threefold $X$ when $D^3=0=c_2(X)\cdot D$ and $c_3(X)\neq 0$. As a direct consequence, we show that on such a variety $X$, if $D$ is strictly nef and $ν(D)\neq 1$, then $D$ is ample; we also show that if there exists a nef non-ample divisor $D$ with $D\not\equiv 0$, then $X$ contains a rational curve when its topological Euler characteristic is not $0$.
We prove the finiteness of log pluricanonical representations for projective log canonical pairs with semi-ample log canonical divisor. As a corollary, we obtain that the log canonical divisor of a projective semi log canonical pair is semi-ample if and only if so is the log canonical divisor of its normalization. We also treat many other applications.
Let X be a projective variety which is algebraic Lang hyperbolic. We show that Lang's conjecture holds (one direction only): X and all its subvarieties are of general type and the canonical divisor K_X is ample at smooth points and Kawamata log terminal points of X, provided that K_X is Q-Cartier, no Calabi-Yau variety is algebraic Lang hyperbolic and a weak abundance conjecture holds.
Let $X$ be a smooth compact complex surface subject to the following conditions: (i) the canonical line bundle $\mathcal{O}_X(K_X) $ is very ample, (ii) the irregularity $q(X): = h^1(\mathcal{O}_X) =0$, (iii) $X$ contains no rational normal curves of degree $\leq (p_g-1)$, (iv) the multiplication map $m_2: Sym^2(H^0(\mathcal{O}_X(K_X))) \longrightarrow H^0 (\mathcal{O}_X (2K_X))$ is surjective. It is shown that the Infinitesimal Torelli holds for such $X$. Our proof is based on the study of the cup-product $$ H^1 (Θ_X) \longrightarrow (\mathcal{O}_X(K_X))^{\ast} \otimes H^1 (Ω_X) $$ where $Θ_X…
We show that a pseudoeffective R-divisor has numerical dimension 0 if it is numerically trivial on a subvariety with ample normal bundle. This implies that the cycle class of a curve with ample normal bundle is big, giving an affirmative answer to a question of Peternell. We also give other positivity properties such subvarieties.
Given an algebraic torus action on a normal projective variety with finitely generated total coordinate ring, we study the GIT-equivalence for not necessarily ample linearized divisors, and we provide a combinatorial description of the partially ordered set of GIT-equivalence classes. As an application, we extend in the $\QQ$-factorial case a basic feature of the collection of ample GIT-classes to the partially ordered collection of maximal subsets with a quasiprojective quotient: for any two members there is at most one minimal member comprising both of them. Moreover, we demonstrate in an ex…
Let f: X -> Z be a local, projective, divisorial contraction between normal varieties of dimension n with Q-factorial singularities. Let $Y \subset X$ be a f-ample Cartier divisor and assume that f|Y: Y -> W has a structure of a weighted blow-up. We prove that f: X -> Z, as well, has a structure of weighted blow-up. As an application we consider a local projective contraction f: X -> Z from a variety X with terminal Q-factorial singularities, which contracts a prime divisor E to an isolated Q-factorial singularity $P\in Z$, such that $-(K_X + (n-3)L)$ is f-ample, for a f-ample Cartier divisor …
We prove a motivic version of the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for a smooth ample divisor $Θ$ on an Abelian variety. We use this to construct a motive $P$ that realizes the primitive cohomology of $Θ$.
In the paper \cite{Lau16}, it was shown that the restriction of a pseudoeffective divisor $D$ to a subvariety $Y$ with nef normal bundle is pseudoeffective. Assuming the normal bundle is ample and that $D|_Y$ is not big, we prove that the numerical dimension of $D$ is bounded above by that of its restriction, i.e. $κ_σ(D)\leq κ_σ(D|_Y)$. The main motivation is to study the cycle classes of "positive" curves: we show that the cycle class of a curve with ample normal bundle lies in the interior of the cone of curves, and the cycle class of an ample curve lies in the interior of the cone of movab…
The bad locus and the rude locus of an ample and base point free linear system on a smooth complex projective variety are introduced and studied. The bad locus is defined as the set of points that force divisors through them to be reducible. The rude locus is defined as the set of points such that divisors that are singular at them are forced to be reducible. The existence of a nonmempty bad locus is shown to be exclusively a two dimensional phenomenon. Polarized surfaces of small degree, or whose degree is the square of a prime, with nonempty bad loci are completely classified. Several explic…
Given a smooth complex projective surface $S$ and an ample divisor $H$ on $S$, consider the blow up of $S$ along $k$ points in general position. Let $H'$ be the pullback of $H$ and $E_1,..., E_k$ be the exceptional divisors. We show that $L = nH' -E_1 - ... -E_k$ is ample if and only if $L^2$ is positive provided the integer $n$ is at least 3.
The Jacobian $J$ of a complete, smooth, connected curve $X$ admits a canonical divisor $Θ$, called the Theta divisor. It is well-known that $Θ$ is ample and, in fact, $3Θ$ is very ample. For a general complete, integral curve $X$, D'Souza constructed a compactification $\bar J$ of the Jacobian $J$ by considering torsion-free, rank 1 sheaves on $X$. Soucaris and the author considered independently the analogous Theta divisor $Θ$ on $\bar J$, and showed that $Θ$ is ample. In this article, we show that $nΘ$ is very ample for $n$ greater or equal to a specified lower bound. If $X$ has at most ordi…
We show that the tangent bundle of a projective manifold with nef anticanonical class is generically nef. That is, its restriction to a curve cut out by general sufficiently ample divisors is a nef vector bundle. This confirms a conjecture of Peternell. As a consequence, the second Chern class of such a manifold has non-negative intersections with ample divisors. We also investigate under which conditions these positivities are strict, and answer a question of Yau.
We prove that Seshadri constants of some ample divisors are bigger than 1 on smooth threefolds whose anticanonical bundle is nef or on Fano varieties of small coindice. The main tools are (some known cases of) the Kawamata's effective non-vanishing conjecture and the adjunction theory. We prove the non-vanishing conjecture in dimension 3 in the case of line bundles of "high" volume using Kawamata's subadjunction formula.
By using classical invariant theory, we reduce the $S_{n}$-invariant F-conjecture to a feasibility problem in polyhedral geometry. We show by computer that for $n \le 19$, every integral $S_{n}$-invariant F-nef divisor on the moduli space of genus zero stable pointed curves is semi-ample, over arbitrary characteristic. Furthermore, for $n \le 16$, we show that for every integral $S_{n}$-invariant nef (resp. ample) divisor $D$ on the moduli space, $2D$ is base-point-free (resp. very ample). As applications, we obtain the nef cone of the moduli space of stable curves without marked points, and t…
A $K3$ surface with an ample divisor of self-intersection 2 is a double cover of the plane branched over a sextic curve. We conjecture that a similar statement holds for the generic couple $(X,H)$ with $X$ a deformation of $(K3)^{[n]}$ and $H$ an ample divisor of square 2 for Beauville's quadratic form. If $n=2$ then according to the conjecture $X$ is a double cover of a (singular) sextic 4-fold in $\PP^5$. It follows from the conjecture that a deformation of $(K3)^{[n]}$ carrying a divisor (not necessarily ample) of degree 2 has an anti-symplectic birational involution. We test the conjecture…
Let $Y$ be a smooth rational surface and let $D$ be a cycle of rational curves on $Y$ which is an anticanonical divisor, i.e. an element of $|-K_Y|$. Looijenga studied the geometry of such surfaces $Y$ in case $D$ has at most five components and identified a geometrically significant subset $R$ of the divisor classes of square -2 orthogonal to the components of $D$. Motivated by recent work of Gross, Hacking, and Keel on the global Torelli theorem for pairs $(Y,D)$, we attempt to generalize some of Looijenga's results in case $D$ has more than five components. In particular, given an integral …
