We prove that all Lagrangian spheres in S^2 x S^2 are Hamiltonian isotopic. The proof uses various properties of holomorphic curves in symplectic manifolds with cylindrical ends which were recently developed in connection with the Symplectic Field Theory.
We show that two Hamiltonian isotopic Lagrangians in (CP^2,ω_\textup{FS}) induce two Lagrangian submanifolds in the one-point blow-up (\widetilde{CP}^2,\widetildeω_ρ) that are not Hamiltonian isotopic. Furthermore, we show that for any integer k>1 there are k Hamiltonian isotopic Lagrangians in (CP^2,ω_\textup{FS}) that induce k Lagrangian submanifolds in the one-point blow-up such that no two of them are Hamiltonian isotopic.
In this paper, we construct the first families of distinct Lagrangian ribbon disks in the standard symplectic 4-ball which have the same boundary Legendrian knots, and are not smoothly isotopic or have non-homeomorphic exteriors.
We considered a surgery, called Lagrangian attaching disk surgery, that can be applied to a Lagrangian surface L at the presence of a Lagrangian attaching disk D, to obtain a new Lagrangian surface L' which is always smoothly isotopic to L. We showed that this type of surgery includes all even generalized Dehn twists as constructed by Paul Seidel. We also constructed a new symplectic invariant, called y-index, for orientable closed Lagrangian surfaces immersed in a parallelizable symplectic 4-manifold W. With y-index we proved that L and L' are not Hamiltonian isotopic. We also obtained new ex…
Let $P$ be a Delzant polytope in $\mathbb{R}^k$ with $n+k$ facets. We associate a closed Lagrangian submanifold $L$ of $\mathbb{C}^n$ to each Delzant polytope. We prove that $L$ is monotone if and only if and only if the polytope $P$ is Fano. We pose the "Lagrangian version of Delzant Theorem". Then for even $p$ and $n$ we construct $\frac{p}{2}$ monotone Lagrangian embeddings of $S^{p-1} \times S^{n-p-1} \times T^2$ into $\mathbb{C}^n$, no two of which are related by Hamiltonian isotopies. Some of these embeddings are smoothly isotopic and have equal minimal Maslov numbers, but they are not H…
Here we discuss an example of topologically isotopic but smoothly non-isotopic pair of 2-spheres in a simply connected 4-manifold, which become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing by connected summing with S^2 x S^2.
Given a Lagrangian submanifold in a symplectic manifold and a Morse function on the submanifold, we show that there is an isotopic Morse function and a symplectic Lefschetz pencil on the manifold extending the Morse function to the whole manifold. From this construction we define a sequence of symplectic invariants classifying the isotopy classes of Lagrangian spheres in a symplectic 4-manifold.
Lagrangian spheres in the symplectic Del Pezzo surfaces arising as blow-ups of the complex projective plane in 4 or fewer points are classified up to Lagrangian isotopy. Unlike the case of the 5-point blow-up, there is no Lagrangian knotting.
We compute the Lagrangian Floer cohomology groups of certain tori in closed simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds arising from Fintushel-Stern knot surgery. These manifolds are usually not symplectically aspherical. As a result of the computation we observe examples where $HF(L_0)\cong HF(L_1)$ and $L_0$ and $L_1$ are smoothly isotopic but $L_0,L_1$ are not symplectically isotopic and are distinguished by $HF(L_0,L_1)$.
We prove that a real Lagrangian submanifold in a closed symplectic manifold is unique up to cobordism. We then discuss the classification of real Lagrangians in $\mathbb{C} P^2$ and $S^2\times S^2$. In particular, we show that a real Lagrangian in $\mathbb{C} P^2$ is unique up to Hamiltonian isotopy and that a real Lagrangian in $S^2\times S^2$ is either Hamiltonian isotopic to the antidialgonal sphere or Lagrangian isotopic to the Clifford torus.
In any contact manifold of dimension $2n-1\geq 11$, we construct examples of closed legendrian submanifolds which are not diffeomorphic but whose lagrangian cylinders in the symplectization are hamiltonian isotopic.
The Chekanov torus was the first known \emph{exotic} torus, a monotone Lagrangian torus that is not Hamiltonian isotopic to the standard monotone Lagrangian torus. We explore the relationship between the Chekanov torus in $S^2 \times S^2$ and a monotone Lagrangian torus which had been introduced before Chekanov's construction \cite{Chekanov}. We prove that the monotone Lagrangian torus fiber in a certain Gelfand--Zeitlin system is Hamiltonian isotopic to the Chekanov torus in $S^2 \times S^2$.
Let L denote the space of Lagrangians Hamiltonian isotopic to the standard Lagrangian in the unit ball in Euclidean space. We prove that the Lagrangian Hofer distance on L is unbounded.
The $n$-dimensional complex hyperquadric is a compact complex algebraic hypersurface defined by the quadratic equation in the $(n+1)$-dimensional complex projective space, which is isometric to the real Grassmann manifold of oriented 2- planes and is a compact Hermitian symmetric space of rank 2. In this paper we study geometry of compact Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics from the viewpoint of the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres. From this viewpoint we provide a classification theorem of compact homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics by usi…
Given a Lagrangian submanifold $L$ of the affine symplectic $2n$-space, one can canonically and uniquely define a center-chord and a special improper affine sphere of dimension $2n$, both of whose sets of singularities contain $L$. Although these improper affine spheres (IAS) always present other singularities away from $L$ (the off-shell singularities studied in our previous paper), they may also present singularities other than $L$ which are arbitrarily close to $L$, the so called singularities "on shell". These on-shell singularities possess a hidden $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry that is absent fr…
Loose Legendrian n-submanifolds, for n at least 2, were introduced by Murphy and proved to be flexible in the h-principle sense: any two loose Legendrian submanifolds that are formally Legendrian isotopic are also actually Legendrian isotopic. Legendrian contact homology is a Floer theoretic invariant that associates a differential graded algebra (DGA) to a Legendrian submanifold. The DGA of a loose Legendrian submanifold is trivial.
We prove that a monotone Lagrangian torus in $S^2\times S^2$ which suitably sits in a symplectic fibration with two sections in its complement is Hamiltonian isotopic to the Clifford torus.
In this note, we prove that two constructions of exotic monotone Lagrangian tori, namely the one by Chekanov and Schlenk and the one obtained by the circle bundle construction of Biran are Hamiltonian isotopic in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ and $S^2 \times S^2$.
We exhibit monotone Lagrangian tori inside the standard symplectic four-dimensional unit ball that become Hamiltonian isotopic to the Clifford torus, i.e.~the standard product torus, only when considered inside a strictly larger ball (they are not even symplectomorphic to a standard torus inside the unit ball). These tori are then used to construct new examples of symplectic embeddings of toric domains into the unit ball which are symplectically knotted in the sense of J.~Gutt and M.~Usher. We also give a characterisation of the Clifford torus inside the ball as well as the projective plane in…
We obtain families of non-isotopic closed exact Lagrangian submanifolds in quasi-projective holomorphic symplectic manifolds that admit contracting $\mathbb{C}^*$-actions. We show that the Floer cohomologies of these Lagrangians are topological in nature, recovering the ordinary cohomologies of their intersection. Moreover, by using these Lagrangians and a version of Carrell-Goresky's integral decomposition theorem, we obtain degree-wise lower bounds on the symplectic cohomology of these spaces.
In this paper we show that there exist simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds which contain infinitely many knotted lagrangian tori, i.e. lagrangian embeddings of tori that are homotopic but not isotopic. Moreover, the homology class they represent can be assumed to be nontrivial and primitive. This answers a question of Eliashberg and Polterovich.
We study Legendrian surfaces determined by cubic planar graphs. Graphs with distinct chromatic polynomials determine surfaces that are not Legendrian isotopic, thus giving many examples of non-isotopic Legendrian surfaces with the same classical invariants. The Legendrians have no exact Lagrangian fillings, but have many interesting non-exact fillings. We obtain these results by studying sheaves on a three-ball with microsupport in the surface. The moduli of such sheaves has a concrete description in terms of the graph and a beautiful embedding as a holomorphic Lagrangian submanifold of a symp…
Given a Lagrangian sphere in a symplectic 4-manifold $(M, ω)$ with $b^+=1$, we find embedded symplectic surfaces intersecting it minimally. When the Kodaira dimension $κ$ of $(M, ω)$ is $-\infty$, this minimal intersection property turns out to be very powerful for both the uniqueness and existence problems of Lagrangian spheres. On the uniqueness side, for a symplectic rational manifold and any class which is not characteristic and ternary, we show that homologous Lagrangian spheres are smoothly isotopic, and when the Euler number is less than 8, we generalize Hind and Evans' Hamiltonian uniq…
We show that the space of anti-symplectic involutions of a monotone $S^2\times S^2$ whose fixed points set is a Lagrangian sphere is connected. This follows from a stronger result, namely that any two anti-symplectic involutions in that space are Hamiltonian isotopic.
For each positive integer $n$, we give a geometric description of the stably trivial elements of the group $π_n U_n/O_n$. In particular, we show that all such elements admit representatives whose tangencies with respect to a fixed Lagrangian plane consist only of folds. By the h-principle for the simplification of caustics, this has the following consequence: if a Lagrangian distribution is stably trivial from the viewpoint of a Lagrangian homotopy sphere, then by an ambient Hamiltonian isotopy one may deform the Lagrangian homotopy sphere so that its tangencies with respect to the Lagrangian …
It is known that any closed, exact Lagrangian in the cotangent bundle of a closed, smooth manifold is of the same homotopy type as the zero section. In this paper, we give a Fukaya-theoretic proof of this fact for the sphere and torus to review and demonstrate some of the homological algebra techniques in symplectic geometry.
We study the Floer cohomology of the Dehn twist along a real Lagrangian sphere in a symplectic manifold endowed with an anti-symplectic involution. We prove that there exists a distinguished element in the Floer group that is a fixed point of the automorphism induced by the involution. Our methods of proof are based on Mak-Wu's cobordism and Floer-theoretic considerations.
Using a hyperKähler rotation on complex structures of a Calabi-Yau 2-fold and rolling of an isotropic 2-submanifold in a symplectic 6-manifold, we construct, by gluing, a natural family of immersed Lagrangian deformations of a branched covering of a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold and study how they deviate from being deformable to a family of special Lagrangian deformations by examining in detail Joyce's criteria on this family. The result suggests a potential image-support rigidity of A-branes that wrap around a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which res…
In this paper, we characterize unitary representations of the fundamental group of a punctured sphere whose generators can be decomposed into products of two Lagrangian involutions. Our main result is that such representations are exactly the elements of the fixed-point set of an anti-symplectic involution defined on the moduli space of unitary representations of this fundamental group. Consequently, it is a Lagrangian submanifold of this representation space.
We prove that the only exact Lagrangian submanifolds in an ALE space are spheres. ALE spaces are the simply connected hyperkahler manifolds which at infinity look like C^2/G for any finite subgroup G of SL(2,C). They can be realized as the plumbing of copies of the cotangent bundle of a 2-sphere according to ADE Dynkin diagrams. The proof relies on symplectic cohomology.
A classical way to construct a Lagrangian in a symplectic manifold $Σ$ is to let $Σ$ appear as a smooth fiber in a Lefschetz fibration. If this is possible the singularities of the fibration induce Lagrangian spheres in $Σ$ and these spheres, in turn, are representatives of the corresponding vanishing cycles in the homology of $Σ$. In this paper our aim is twofold: The first is to describe a generalization of the above mentioned construction to the "Morse-Bott" case. This leads, whenever such a degeneration exists, to the existence of Lagrangian sphere bundles rather than just spheres. In the …
We prove the Hamiltonian unknottedness of real Lagrangian tori in the monotone $S^2\times S^2$, namely any real Lagrangian torus in $S^2\times S^2$ is Hamiltonian isotopic to the Clifford torus $\mathbb{T}_{\text{Clif}}$. The proof is based on a neck-stretching argument, Gromov's foliation theorem, and the Cieliebak-Schwingenheuer criterion.
Let $(M^4,ω)$ be a geometrically bounded symplectic manifold, and $L\subset M$ a Lagrangian nodal sphere such that $ω\mid_{π_2(M,L)}=0$. We show that an equatorial Dehn twist of $L$ does not extend to a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of $M$. We also confirm a mirror symmetry prediction about the action of a symplectomorphism extending an equatorial Dehn twist on the Floer theory of the nodal sphere. We present analogues of the equatorial Dehn twist for more singular Lagrangians, and make concrete conjectures about them.
We study lower semi-continuity properties of the volume, i.e., the surface area, of a closed Lagrangian manifold with respect to the Hofer- and $γ$-distance on a class of monotone Lagrangian submanifolds Hamiltonian isotopic to each other. We prove that volume is $γ$-lower semi-continuous in two cases. In the first one the volume form comes from a Kähler metric with a large group of Hamiltonian isometries, but there are no additional constraints on the Lagrangian submanifold. The second one is when the volume is taken with respect to any compatible metric, but the Lagrangian submanifold must b…
We calculate the self-Floer cohomology with Z/2 coefficients of some immersed Lagrangian spheres in the affine symplectic submanifolds of C^3 that are smoothings of A_N surfaces. The immersed spheres are exact and graded. Moreover, they satisfy a positivity assumption that allows us to calculate the Floer cohomology as follows: Given auxiliary data a Morse function on S^2 and a time-dependent almost complex structure, the Floer cochain complex is the Morse complex plus two generators for each self-intersection point of the Lagrangian sphere. The Floer differential is defined by counting combin…
We consider open symplectic manifolds which admit dilations (in the sense previously introduced by Solomon and the author). We obtain restrictions on collections of Lagrangian submanifolds which are pairwise disjoint (or pairwise disjoinable by Hamiltonian isotopies) inside such manifolds. This includes the Milnor fibres of isolated hypersurface singularities which have been stabilized (by adding quadratic terms) sufficiently often.
We use tropical curves and toric degeneration techniques to construct closed embedded Lagrangian rational homology spheres in a lot of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We apply this construction to the tropical curves obtained from the 2875 lines on the quintic Calabi-Yau threefold. Each admissible tropical curve gives a Lagrangian rational homology sphere in the corresponding mirror quintic threefold and disjoint curves give pairwise homologous but non-Hamiltonian isotopic Lagrangians. We check in an example that $>300$ mutually disjoint curves (and hence Lagrangians) arise. We show that the weight of …
We present a new and simpler proof of the fact that any Lagrangian $\mathbb{R}P^2$ in $T^*\mathbb{R}P^2$ is Hamiltonian isotopic to the zero section. Our proof mirrors the one given by Li and Wu for the Hamiltonian uniqueness of Lagrangians in $T^*S^2$, using surgery to turn Lagrangian spheres into symplectic ones. The main novel contribution is a detailed proof of the folklore fact that the complement of a symplectic quadric in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ can be identified with the unit cotangent disc bundle of $\mathbb{R}P^2$.
We give examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds containing Lagrangian spheres which are not vanishing cycles of nodal degenerations, answering a question of Donaldson in the negative.
We compare Hofer's geometries on two spaces associated with a closed symplectic manifold M. The first space is the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. The second space L consists of all Lagrangian submanifolds of $M \times M$ which are exact Lagrangian isotopic to the diagonal. We show that in the case of a closed symplectic manifold with $π_2(M) = 0$, the canonical embedding of Ham(M) into L, f $\mapsto$ graph(f) is not an isometric embedding, although it preserves Hofer's length of smooth paths.
Let k>2. We prove that the cotangent bundles of oriented homotopy (2k-1)-spheres S and S' are symplectomorphic only if the classes defined by S and S' agree up to sign in the quotient group of oriented homotopy spheres modulo those which bound parallelizable manifolds. We also show that if the connect sum of real projective space of dimension (4k-1) and a homotopy (4k-1)-sphere admits a Lagrangian embedding in complex projective space, then twice the homotopy sphere framed bounds. The proofs build on previous work of Abouzaid and the authors, in combination with a new cut-and-paste argument, w…
We classify weakly exact, rational Lagrangian tori in $T^* \mathbb{T}^2- 0_{\mathbb{T}^2}$ up to Hamiltonian isotopy. This result is related to the classification theory of closed $1$-forms on $\mathbb{T}^n$ and also has applications to symplectic topology. As a first corollary, we strengthen a result due independently to Eliashberg-Polterovich and to Giroux describing Lagrangian tori in $T^* \mathbb{T}^2-0_{\mathbb{T}^2}$ which are homologous to the zero section. As a second corollary, we exhibit pairs of disjoint totally real tori $K_1, K_2 \subset T^*\mathbb{T}^2$, each of which is isotopic…
In dimensions congruent to 1 modulo 4, we prove that the cotangent bundle of an exotic sphere which does not bound a parallelisable manifold is not symplectomorphic to the cotangent bundle of the standard sphere. More precisely, we prove that such an exotic sphere cannot embed as a Lagrangian in the cotangent bundle of the standard sphere. The main ingredients of the construction are (1) the fact that the graph of the Hopf fibration embeds the standard sphere, and hence any Lagrangian which embeds in its cotangent bundle, as a displaceable Lagrangian in the product a symplectic vector space of…
Let $(S^2,ω)$ be a symplectic sphere, and let $τ\colon S^2 \to S^2$ be an anti-symplectic involution of $(S^2,ω)$. We consider the product $(S^2,ω) \times (S^2,ω)$ endowed with the anti-symplectic involution $τ\times τ$, and study the space of monotone anti-invariant symplectic forms on this four-manifold. We show that this space is disconnected. In addition, during the course of the proof, we produce a diffeomorphism of the grassmannian (2,4) which induces the identity map on all homology and homotopy groups, but which is not homotopic to the identity.
For a transversal pair of closed Lagrangian submanifolds L, L' of a symplectic manifold M so that $π_{1}(L)=π_{1}(L')=0=c_{1}|_{π_{2}(M)}=ω|_{π_{2}(M)}$ and a generic almost complex structure J we construct an invariant with a high homotopical content which consists in the pages of order $\geq 2$ of a spectral sequence whose differentials provide an algebraic measure of the high-dimensional moduli spaces of pseudo-holomorpic strips of finite energy that join L and L'. When L and L' are hamiltonian isotopic, these pages coincide (up to a horizontal translation) with the terms of the Serre-spect…
Let n>3, and let L be a Lagrangian embedding of an n-disk into the cotangent bundle of n-dimensional Euclidean space that agrees with the cotangent fiber over a non-zero point x outside a compact set. Assume that L is disjoint from the cotangent fiber at the origin. The projection of L to the base extends to a map of the n-sphere into the complement of the origin in Euclidean n-space . We show that this map is homotopically trivial, answering a question of Y. Eliashberg. We give a number of generalizations of this result, including homotopical constraints on embedded Lagrangian disks in the co…
