Recently L. Nicolaescu and the author formulated a conjecture which relates the geometric genus of a complex analytic normal surface singularity (whose link $M$ is a rational homology sphere) with the Seiberg-Witten invariant of $M$ associated with the ``canonical'' $spin^c$ structure of $M$. Since the Seiberg-Witten theory of the link $M$ provides a rational number for any $spin^c$ structure it was a natural challenge to search for a complete set of conjecturally valid identities, which involve all the Seiberg-Witten invariants (giving an analytic -- i.e. singularity theoretical -- interpretation of them).
The formulation of this set of identities is one of the goals of the present article. In fact, we formulate conjecturally valid inequalities which became equalities in special rigid situations.
In this way, the Seiberg-Witten invariants determine optimal topological upper bounds for the dimensions of the first sheaf-cohomology of line bundles living on the resolution. Moreover, for $\Q$-Gorenstein singularities and some ``natural'' line bundles equality holds.
The first part of the article constructs these ``natural'' holomorphic line bundles. The line-bundle construction is compatible with abelian covers. This allows us to reformulate the conjecture in its second version which relates the echivariant geometric genus (associated with the universal abelian cover of the singular germ) with the Seiberg-Witten invariants of the link $M$. In the last section we verify the conjecture for rational singularities.
Given a complex projective surface with an ADE singularity and p_{g}=0, we construct ADE bundles over it and its minimal resolution. Furthermore, we descibe their minuscule representation bundles in terms of configurations of (reducible) (-1)-curves.
We give a new criterion for when a resolution of a surface of general type with canonical singularities has big cotangent bundle and a new lower bound for the values of $d$ for which there is a surface with big cotangent bundle that is deformation equivalent to a smooth hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of degree $d$.
We prove that every irreducible component of semi-regular loci of effective line bundles in the Picard scheme of a smooth projective variety has at worst rational singularities. This generalizes Kempf's result on rational singularities of $W^0_d$ for smooth curves. We also work out an example of such loci for a ruled surface.
In this paper we consider the singularities of the varieties parameterizing stable vector bundles of fixed rank and degree with sections on a smooth curve of genus at least two. In particular, we extend results of Y. Laszlo, and of the second author, regarding the singularities of generalized theta divisors.
We provide several results on splice-quotient singularities: a combinatorial expression of the dimension of the first cohomology of all `natural' line bundles, an equivariant Campillo-Delgado-Gusein-Zade type formula about the dimension of relative sections of line bundles (proving that the equivariant, divisorial multi-variable Hilbert series is topological), a combinatorial description of divisors of analytic function-germs, and an expression for the multiplicity of the singularity from its resolution graph. Additional, we establish a new formula for the Seiberg-Witten invariants of any rati…
A conic bundle is a contraction $X\to Z$ between normal varieties of relative dimension $1$ such that $-K_X$ is relatively ample. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov which predicts that, if $X\to Z$ is a conic bundle such that $X$ has canonical singularities and $Z$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein, then $Z$ is always $\frac{1}{2}$-lc, and the multiplicities of the fibers over codimension $1$ points are bounded from above by $2$. Both values $\frac{1}{2}$ and $2$ are sharp. This is achieved by solving a more general conjecture of Shokurov on singularities of bases of lc-trivial fibrations of relative …
We study the motivic and $\ell$-adic realizations of the dg category of singularities of the zero locus of a global section of a line bundle over a regular scheme. We will then use the formula obtained in this way together with a theorem due to D.~Orlov and J.~Burke - M.~Walker to give a formula for the $\ell$-adic realization of the dg category of singularities of the special fiber of a scheme over a regular local ring of dimension $n$.
We prove the logarithmic divergence of equivariant analytic torsion for one-parameter degenerations of projective algebraic manifolds, when the coefficient vector bundle is given by a Nakano semi-positive vector bundle twisted by the relative canonical bundle.
We investigate the minimal singularities of metrics on a big line bundle $L$ over a projective manifold when the stable base locus $Y$ of $L$ is a submanifold of codimension $r\geq 1$. Under some assumptions on the normal bundle and a neighborhood of $Y$, we give a explicit description of the minimal singularity of metrics on $L$. We apply this result to study a higher (co-)dimensional analogue of Zariski's example, in which the line bundle $L$ is not semi-ample, however it is nef and big.
If $ D \in X$ is a curve with multiple points in a surface, a parabolic bundle defined on $(X;D)$ away from the singularities can be extended in several ways to a parabolic bundle on a resolution of singularities. We investigate the possible parabolic Chern classes for these extensions.
We consider degenerations of complex projective Calabi--Yau varieties and study the singularities of $L^2$, Quillen and BCOV metrics on Hodge and determinant bundles. The dominant and subdominant terms in the expansions of the metrics close to non-smooth fibers are shown to be related to well-known topological invariants of singularities, such as limit Hodge structures, vanishing cycles and log-canonical thresholds. We also describe corresponding invariants for more general degenerating families in the case of the Quillen metric.
A theorem by Mumford implies that every automorphic line bundle on a pure open Shimura variety, equipped with an invariant smooth metric, can be uniquely extended as a line bundle on a toroidal compactification of the variety, in such a way that the metric acquires only logarithmic singularities. This result is the key of being able to compute arithmetic intersection numbers from these line bundles. Hence it is natural to ask whether Mumford's result remains valid for line bundles on mixed Shimura varieties. In this paper we examine the simplest case, namely the sheaf of Jacobi forms on the un…
We prove lower bound and finiteness properties for arakelovian heights with respect to pre-log-log hermitian ample line bundles. These heights were introduced by Burgos, Kramer and Kühn, in their extension of the arithmetic intersection theory of Gillet and Soulé, aimed to deal with hermitian vector bundles equipped with metrics admitting suitable logarithmic singularities. Our results generalize the corresponding properties for the heights of Bost-Gillet-Soulé, as well as the properties established by Faltings for heights of points attached to hermitian line bundles whose metrics have logarit…
We define Chern and Segre forms, or rather currents, associated with a Griffiths positive singular hermitian metric $h$ with analytic singularities on a holomorphic vector bundle $E$. The currents are constructed as pushforwards of generalized Monge-Ampère products on the projectivization of $E$. The Chern and Segre currents represent the Chern and Segre classes of $E$, respectively, and coincide with the Chern and Segre forms of $E$ and $h$, where $h$ is smooth. Moreover, our currents coincide with the Chern and Segre forms constructed by the first three authors and Ruppenthal in the cases wh…
The purpose of this paper is to establish a Nadel vanishing theorem for big line bundles with multiplier ideal sheaves of singular metrics admitting an analytic Zariski decomposition (such as, metrics with minimal singularities and Siu's metrics). For this purpose, we apply the theory of harmonic integrals and generalize Enoki's proof of Koll'ar's injectivity theorem. Moreover we investigate the asymptotic behavior of harmonic forms with respect to a family of regularized metrics.
Let $\mathcal{T}$ be an arbitrary resolution graph and $(X, 0)$ a generic complex analytic normal surface singularity, and $\tilde{X}$ a generic resolution corresponding to it. Fix an effective integer cycle $Z$ supported on the exceptional curve and also an arbitrary Chern class $Z' \in L'$. In this article we aim to compute the cohomology numbers $h^1(\mathcal{O}_{Z}(Z'))$. Notice, that the case $Z'_v < 0, v \in |Z|$ was discussed in \cite{NNA2}, where the main theorem was, that in this special case these cohomology numbers equal to the cohomology numbers of the generic line bundle in $\text…
In \cite{NNM} the author with A. Némethi computed the multiplicity of generic surface singularities, the formula is purely topological computable from the resolution graph of the surface singularity. In the present paper we extend the results partly to the relative case, when there is a pair of resolution graphs $\mathcal{T}_1 \subset \mathcal{T}$, a fixed singularity $\tX_1$ with resolution graph $\mathcal{T}_1$, a relatively generic singularity $\tX$ corresponding to the subsingularity $\tX_1$ with resolution graph $\mathcal{T}$. We determine the base points of the natural line bundles (unde…
We identify the holomorphic de Rham complex of the minimal extension of a meromorphic vector bundle with connexion on a compact Riemann surface X with the L^2 complex relative to a suitable metric on the bundle and a complete metric on the punctured Riemann surface. Applying results of C. Simpson, we show the existence of a harmonic metric on this vector bundle, giving the same L^2 complex. As a consequence, we obtain a Hard Lefschetz-type theorem.
We construct models of involution surface bundles over algebraic surfaces, degenerating over normal crossing divisors, and with controlled singularities of the total space.
A $\mathbb Q$-conic bundle is a proper morphism from a threefold with only terminal singularities to a normal surface such that fibers are connected and the anti-canonical divisor is relatively ample. We study the structure of $\mathbb Q$-conic bundles near their singular fibers. One corollary to our main results is that the base surface of every $\mathbb Q$-conic bundle has only Du Val singularities of type A (a positive solution of a conjecture by Iskovskikh). We obtain the complete classification of $\mathbb Q$-conic bundles under the additional assumption that the singular fiber is irreduc…
Let $X$ be a proper smooth algebraic variety over a field $k$ of characteristic zero and let $D$ be a divisor with simple normal crossings. Let $M$ be a vector bundle over $X-D$ equipped with a flat connection with possible irregular singularities along $D$. We define a cleanliness condition which roughly says that the singularities of the connection are controlled by the singularities at the generic points of $D$. When this condition is satisfied, we compute explicitly the associated log-characteristic cycle, and relate it to the so-called refined irregularities. As a corollary of a log-varia…
Let X be a smooth variety over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic. We define and study a general notion of regular singularities for stratified bundles (i.e. O_X-coherent D_X-modules) on X without relying on resolution of singularities. The main result is that the category of regular singular stratified bundles with finite monodromy is equivalent to the category of continuous representations of the tame fundamental group on finite dimensional k-vector spaces. As a corollary we obtain that a stratified bundle with finite monodromy is regular singular if and only if it is…
Our previous papers introduce topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety, show that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the corresponding geometric notions, and establish a topological smoothability criterion for normal crossings symplectic varieties. The present paper constructs a blowup, a complex line bundle, and a logarithmic tangent bundle naturally associated with a normal crossings symplectic divisor and determines the Chern class of the last bundle. These structures hav applications in constructions and analysis of various moduli spaces. As a coroll…
We study the null fiber of a moment map related to dual pairs. We construct an equivariant resolution of singularities of the null fiber, and get conormal bundles of closed $ K_C $-orbits in the Lagrangian Grassmannian as the categorical quotient. The conormal bundles thus obtained turn out to be a resolution of singularities of the closure of nilpotent $ K_C $-orbits, which is a "quotient" of the resolution of the null fiber.
We show by an example that the (equivalence class of) singularity of a plurisubharmonic function cannot be determined by the data of its Lelong numbers, in a nontrivial sense. Such an example is provided by Siu-type singular hermitian metrics associated to an effective line bundle. We also show that a Siu-type metric has analytic singularities if and only if the section ring of the line bundle is finitely generated.
In a series of recent papers, Chiodo, Farkas and Ludwig carry out a deep analysis of the singular locus of the moduli space of stable (twisted) curves with an $\ell$-torsion line bundle. They show that for $\ell\leq 6$ and $\ell\neq 5$ pluricanonical forms extend over any desingularization. This allows to compute the Kodaira dimension without desingularizing, as done by Farkas and Ludwig for $\ell=2$, and by Chiodo, Eisenbud, Farkas and Schreyer for $\ell=3$. Here we treat roots of line bundles on the universal curve systematically: we consider the moduli space of curves $C$ with a line bundle…
We study the null-cone of a semi-simple algebraic group acting on a number of copies of its Lie algebra via the diagonal adjoint action. We show that the null cone has rational singularities in the case of SL3. We observe by example that the null-cone is not normal in general and that the normalization of the null-cone does not have rational singularities in general. This is achieved by computing cohomology of certain vector bundles on flag varieties.
This paper studies intersection theory on the compactified moduli space M(n,d) of holomorphic bundles of rank n and degree d over a fixed compact Riemann surface of genus g > 1 where n and d may have common factors. Because of the presence of singularities we work with the intersection cohomology groups defined by Goresky and MacPherson and the ordinary cohomology groups of a certain partial resolution of singularities of M(n,d). Based on our earlier work, we give a precise formula for the intersection cohomology pairing and provide a method to calculate pairings on the partial resolution of s…
This article is concerned with moduli spaces of connections on bundles on Riemann surfaces, where the structure group of the bundle may vary in different regions of the surface. Here we will describe such moduli spaces as complex symplectic manifolds, generalising the complex character varieties of Riemann surfaces.
Let $(X,o)$ be a complex normal surface singularity. We fix one of its good resolutions $\widetilde{X}\to X$, an effective cycle $Z$ supported on the reduced exceptional curve, and any possible (first Chern) class $l'\in H^2(\widetilde{X},\mathbb{Z})$. With these data we define the variety ${\rm ECa}^{l'}(Z)$ of those effective Cartier divisors $D$ supported on $Z$ which determine a line bundles $\mathcal{O}_Z(D)$ with first Chern class $l'$. Furthermore, we consider the affine space ${\rm Pic}^{l'}(Z)\subset H^1(\mathcal{O}_Z^*)$ of isomorphism classes of holomorphic line bundles with Chern c…
As in our previous work [1] we address the problem to determine the splitting of the normal bundle of rational curves. With apolarity theory we are able to characterize some particular subvarieties in some Hilbert scheme of rational curves, defined by the splitting type of the normal bundle and the restricted tangent bundle.
In \cite{R} the author investigated invariants of relatively generic structures on surface singularities generalising results of \cite{NNA1} and \cite{NNA2} about generic analytic structures and generic line bundles to the case of the relative setup, where we fix a given analytic type or line bundle on a smaller subgraph or more generally on a smaller cycle and we choose a relatively generic line bundle or analytic type on the large cycle and managed to compute some of it's invariants, like geometric genus or $h^1$ of natural line bundles. In \cite{NNAD} the authors investigated the images of …
We describe the sheaf T^1(X) of first order deformations of a reduced scheme with normal crossing singularities. In particular, we obtain a formula for T^1(X) in a suitable log resolution of X.
In this article we prove new results on projective normality and normal presentation of adjunction bundle associated to an ample and globally generated line bundle on higher dimensional smooth projective varieties with nef canonical bundle. As one of the consequences of the main theorem, we give bounds on very ampleness and projective normality of pluricanonical linear systems on varieties of general type in dimensions three, four and five. These improve known such results.
In the present article we work out a relative setup of generic structures on surface singularities. We fix an analytic type on a subgraph of a rational homology sphere resolution graph $\mathcal{T}$ and we choose a relatively generic normal surface singularity $\tX$ with resolution graph $\mathcal{T}$. We provide formulae for the geometric genus and the analytical Poincaré series of $\tX$. We determine the base point structure of natural line bundles on $\tX$ and give a lower bound on the multiplicity of $\tX$ which is expected to be sharp. We prove similar results about cohomology numbers of …
In this paper, we give partial answers to the following questions: Which contact manifolds are contactomorphic to links of isolated complex singularities? Which symplectic manifolds are symplectomorphic to smooth affine varieties? The invariant that we will use to distinguish such manifolds is called the growth rate of wrapped Floer cohomology. Using this invariant we show that if Q is a simply connected manifold whose unit cotangent bundle is contactomorphic to the link of an isolated singularity or whose cotangent bundle is symplectomorphic to a smooth affine variety then M must be rationall…
We provide combinatorial/topological formula for the multiplicity of a complex analytic normal surface singularity whenever the analytic structure on the fixed topological type is generic.
Any line bundle $\cl $ on a smooth curve $C$ of genus $g$ with $°\cl \ge 2g+1$ is normally generated, i.e., $φ_\cl (C)\subseteq \mathbb P H^0 (C,\cl)$ is projectively normal. However, it has known that more various line bundles of degree $d$ failing to be normally generated appear on multiple coverings of genus $g$ as $d$ becomes smaller than $2g+1$. Thus, investigating the normal generation of line bundles on multiple coverings can be an effective approach to the normal generation. In this paper, we obtain conditions for line bundles on multiple coverings being normally generated or not, resp…
Normally one assumes isolated surface singularities to be normal. The purpose of this paper is to show that it can be useful to look at nonnormal singularities. By deforming them interesting normal singularities can be constructed, such as isolated, non Cohen-Macaulay threefold singularities. They arise by a small contraction of a smooth rational curve, whose normal bundle has a sufficiently positive subbundle. We study such singularities from their nonnormal general hyperplane section.
We determine the splitting (isomorphism) type of the normal bundle of a generic genus-0 curve with 1 or 2 components in any projective space, as well as the (sometimes nontrivial) way the bundle deforms locally with a general deformation of the curve. We deduce an enumerative formula for divisorial loci of smooth rational curves whose normal bundle is of non-generic splitting type.
We show that a pseudoeffective R-divisor has numerical dimension 0 if it is numerically trivial on a subvariety with ample normal bundle. This implies that the cycle class of a curve with ample normal bundle is big, giving an affirmative answer to a question of Peternell. We also give other positivity properties such subvarieties.
We prove semi-rationalification and semi-log-canonicalization for Gorenstein demi-normal surfaces. That is, given a Gorenstein demi-normal surface X with semi-rational (respectively, semi-log canonical) singularities in an open set U with complement a finite set of points, there is a proper birational morphism f : Y --> X such that f is an isomorphism over U and Y has only semi-rational (respectively, semi-log canonical) singularities. We proceed by passing to the normalization and then gluing along the conductor in an appropriate rationalification or log-canonicalization of the normalization …
We generalise Simpson's nonabelian Hodge correspondence to the context of projective varieties with klt singularities. The proof relies on a descent theorem for numerically flat vector bundles along birational morphisms. In its simplest form, this theorem asserts that given any klt variety X and any resolution of singularities, then any vector bundle on the resolution that appears to come from X numerically, does indeed come from X. Furthermore and of independent interest, a new restriction theorem for semistable Higgs sheaves defined on the smooth locus of a normal, projective variety is esta…
We study the normal bundles of the exceptional sets of isolated simple small singularities in the higher dimension when the Picard group of the exceptional set is $\mathbb{Z}$ and the normal bundle of it has some good filtration. In particular, for the exceptional set is a projective space with the split normal bundle, we generalized Nakayama and Ando's results to higher dimension. Moreover, we also generalize Laufer's results of rationality and embedding dimension to higher dimension.
