This paper studies intersection theory on the compactified moduli space M(n,d) of holomorphic bundles of rank n and degree d over a fixed compact Riemann surface of genus g > 1 where n and d may have common factors. Because of the presence of singularities we work with the intersection cohomology groups defined by Goresky and MacPherson and the ordinary cohomology groups of a certain partial resolution of singularities of M(n,d). Based on our earlier work, we give a precise formula for the intersection cohomology pairing and provide a method to calculate pairings on the partial resolution of singularities of M(n,d). The case when n=2 is discussed in detail. Finally Witten's integral is considered for this singular case.
This is the first of a series of papers. Our final goal is to establish Deligne-Riemann-Roch isomorphisms in various settings. In this paper, we establish a uniqueness theorem for Deligne pairings and prove the degree $1$ part of the Deligne-Riemann-Roch theorem.
In this paper, we prove the functorial Riemann-Roch theorem in positive characteristic for a smooth and projective morphism with any relative dimension. In the case of relative dimension $1$, we have given an analogue with Deligne's functorial Riemann Roch theorem in previous author's paper. For any relative dimension, our result can deduce an analogue to the Knudsen-Mumford extension. The present result is a generalization, which mainly originated from the extended Deligne pairing by S. Zhang and the Adams Riemann Roch theorem in positive characteristic by R. Pink and D. Rössler.
For an arbitrary proper DG algebra A (i.e. DG algebra with finite dimensional total cohomology) we introduce a pairing on the Hochschild homology of A and present an explicit formula for a Chern-type character of an arbitrary perfect A-module (the Chern characters take values in the Hochschild homology of A). The Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula in this context expresses the Euler characteristic of the Hom-complex between two perfect A-modules in terms of the pairing of their Chern characters. We mention two examples of proper DG algebras and the HRR formulas for them. The first example is Ring…
Previously we gave a conjectural cohomological argument for the validity of the Riemann hypotheses for Hasse-Weil zeta functions. In the present note we sketch how the same cohomological formalism would imply the conjectured positivity properties of the height pairings of homologically trivial cycles.
Let $X$ be a smooth proper scheme over a field of characteristic 0. Following D. Shklyarov [10], we construct a (non-degenerate) pairing on the Hochschild homology of $\per{X}$, and hence, on the Hochschild homology of $X$. On the other hand the Hochschild homology of $X$ also has the Mukai pairing (see [1]). If $X$ is Calabi-Yau, this pairing arises from the action of the class of a genus 0 Riemann-surface with two incoming closed boundaries and no outgoing boundary in $\text{H}_{0}({\mathcal M}_0(2,0))$ on the algebra of closed states of a version of the B-Model on $X$. We show that these pa…
We study which groups with pairing can occur as the Jacobian of a finite graph. We provide explicit constructions of graphs whose Jacobian realizes a large fraction of odd groups with a given pairing. Conditional on the generalized Riemann hypothesis, these constructions yield all groups with pairing of odd order, and unconditionally, they yield all groups with pairing whose prime factors are sufficiently large. For groups with pairing of even order, we provide a partial answer to this question, for a certain restricted class of pairings. Finally, we explore which finite abelian groups occur a…
We study the Hochschild homology of smooth spaces, emphasizing the importance of a pairing which generalizes Mukai's pairing on the cohomology of K3 surfaces. We show that integral transforms between derived categories of spaces induce, functorially, linear maps on homology. Adjoint functors induce adjoint linear maps with respect to the Mukai pairing. We define a Chern character with values in Hochschild homology, and we discuss analogues of the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Cardy Condition from physics. This is done in the context of a 2-category which has spaces as its objects and…
In the context of orientable circuits and subcomplexes of these as representing certain singular spaces, we consider characteristic class formulas generalizing those classical results as seen for the Riemann-Hurwitz formula for regulating the topology of branched covering maps and that for monoidal transformations which include the standard blowing-up process. Here the results are presented as cap product pairings, which will be elements of a suitable homology theory, rather than characteristic numbers as would be the case when taking Kronecker products once Poincaré duality is defined. We fur…
Given a compact Riemann surface $Y$ and a positive integer $m$, Narasimhan and Simha defined a measure on $Y$ associated to the $m$-th tensor power of the canonical line bundle. We study the limit of this measure on holomorphic families of Riemann surfaces with semistable reduction. The convergence takes place on a hybrid space whose central fiber is the associated metrized curve complex in the sense of Amini and Baker. We also study the limit of the measure induced by the Hermitian pairing defined by the Narasimhan-Simha measure. For $m = 1$, both these measures coincide with the Bergman meas…
We obtain variational formulas for holomorphic objects on Riemann surfaces with respect to arbitrary local coordinates on the moduli space of complex structures. These formulas are written in terms of a canonical object on the moduli space which corresponds to the pairing between the space of quadratic differentials and the tangent space to the moduli space. This canonical object satisfies certain commutation relations which appear to be the same as the ones that emerged in the integrability theory of Whitham type hierarchies. Driven by this observation, we develop the theory of Whitham type h…
We prove formulas (found by Witten in 1992 using physical methods) for intersection pairings in the cohomology of the moduli space M(n,d) of stable holomorphic vector bundles of rank n and degree d (assumed coprime) on a Riemann surface of genus g greater than or equal to 2. We also use these formulas for intersection numbers to obtain a proof of the Verlinde formula for the dimension of the space of holomorphic sections of a line bundle over M(n,d).
We show by studying the symplectic geometry of the extended moduli space that the intersection cohomology of the representation space $Hom(π_1(Σ),G)/G$ for a simply connected compact Lie group $G$ is naturally embedded into the $G$ equivariant cohomology of $Hom(π_1(Σ),G)$ where $Σ$ is a closed Riemann surface. This enables us to compute the intersection cohomology as a graded vector space with intersection pairing, in terms of the equivariant cohomology ring. The case where $G=SU(2)$ -- the moduli space of rank 2 holomorphic vector bundles of even degree -- is discussed in detail.
We introduce the p-adic analogue of Arakelov intersection theory on arithmetic surfaces. The intersection pairing in an extension of the p-adic height pairing for divisors of degree 0 in the form described by Coleman and Gross. It also uses Coleman integration and is related to work of Colmez on p-adic Green functions. We introduce the p-adic version of a metrized line bundle and define the metric on the determinant of its cohomology in the style of Faltings. It is possible to prove in this theory analogues of the Adjunction formula and the Riemann-Roch formula.
Let $f:\mathbb{C}^{n+1} \to \mathbb{C}$ be a germ of hypersurface with isolated singularity. One can associate to $f$ a polarized variation of mixed Hodge structure $\mathcal{H}$ over the punctured disc, where the Hodge filtration is the limit Hodge filtration of W. Schmid and J. Steenbrink. By the work of M. Saito and P. Deligne the VMHS associated to cohomologies of the fibers of $f$ can be extended over the degenerate point $0$ of disc. The new fiber obtained in this way is isomorphic to the module of relative differentials of $f$ denoted $Ω_f$. A mixed Hodge structure can be defined on $Ω_…
Using the u-plane integral of Moore and Witten, we derive a simple expression for the Donaldson invariants of $Σ_g \times S^2$, where $Σ_g$ is a Riemann surface of genus g. This expression generalizes a theorem of Morgan and Szabo for g=1 to any genus g. We give two applications of our results: (1) We derive Thaddeus' formulae for the intersection pairings on the moduli space of rank two stable bundles over a Riemann surface. (2) We derive the eigenvalue spectrum of the Fukaya-Floer cohomology of $Σ_g \times S^1$.
A purely numerical approach to compact Riemann surfaces starting from plane algebraic curves is presented. The critical points of the algebraic curve are computed via a two-dimensional Newton iteration. The starting values for this iteration are obtained from the resultants with respect to both coordinates of the algebraic curve and a suitable pairing of their zeros. A set of generators of the fundamental group for the complement of these critical points in the complex plane is constructed from circles around these points and connecting lines obtained from a minimal spanning tree. The monodrom…
The classical Hurwitz spaces, that parameterize compact Riemann surfaces equipped with covering maps to ${\mathbb P}_1$ of fixed numerical type with simple branch points, are extensively studied in the literature. We apply deformation theory, and present a study of the Kähler structure of the Hurwitz spaces, which reflects the variation of the complex structure of the Riemann surface as well as the variation of the meromorphic map. We introduce a generalized Weil-Petersson Kähler form on the Hurwitz space. This form turns out to be the curvature of a Quillen metric on a determinant line bundle…
In two articles by Barthel, Brasselet, Fieseler and Kaup, and, Bressler and Lunts, a combinatorial theory of intersection cohomology and perverse sheaves has been developed on fans. In the first one, one tried to present everything on an elementary level, using only some commutative algebra and no derived categories. There remained two major gaps: First of all the Hard Lefschetz Theorem was only conjectured and secondly the intersection product seemed to depend on some non-canonical choices. Meanwhile the Hard Lefschetz theorem has been proved by Karu. The proof relies heavily on the intersecti…
