We construct an endoscopic decomposition for local L-packets associated to irreducible cuspidal Deligne-Lusztig representations. Moreover, the obtained decomposition is compatible with inner twistings.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be an unramified quasi-split unitary group over a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. The goal of this paper is to describe the supercuspidal representations within certain L-packets of $\mathbf{G}$, which are classified by Arthur and Mok using the theory of endoscopy. The description is given in terms of the cuspidal types constructed by Bushnell-Kutzko and Stevens. As a starting example, we require the parameters of our packets to satisfy certain regularity conditions, such that these packets consist of very cuspidal representations in the sense of Adler and Reeder.…
We construct an endoscopic decomposition for local L-packets associated to irreducible cuspidal Deligne-Lusztig representations. Moreover, the obtained decomposition is compatible with inner twistings.
Arthur classified the discrete automorphic representations of symplectic and orthogonal groups over a number field by that of the general linear groups. In this classification, those that are not from endoscopic lifting correspond to pairs $(ϕ, b)$, where $ϕ$ is an irreducible unitary cuspidal automorphic representation of some general linear group and $b$ is an integer. In this paper, we study the local components of these automorphic representations at a nonarchimedean place, and we give a complete description of them in terms of their Langlands parameters.
In this article we study the nonvanishing of cuspidal cohomology for GL(n). Using endoscopic transfer from various classical groups we construct cuspidal representations of GL(n) of cohomological type while working over a totally real field or a totally imaginary quadratic extension of a totally real field. Generalizing a construction of Laurent Clozel, we also prove nonvanishing of cuspidal cohomology of GL(2n) over any number field but only for coefficient systems coming from parallel weights. Working at an arithmetic level, we also draw some inferences on an endoscopic stratification of inn…
The endoscopic classification via the stable trace formula comparison provides certain character relations between irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of classical groups and their global Arthur parameters, which are certain automorphic representations of general linear groups. It is a question of J. Arthur and W. Schmid that asks: How to construct concrete modules for irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of classical groups in term of their global Arthur parameters? In this paper, we formulate a general construction of concrete modules, using Bessel periods, for cuspi…
Let $\widetilde{\mathrm{Sp}}(2n)$ be the metaplectic covering of $\mathrm{Sp}(2n)$ over a local field of characteristic zero. The core of the theory of endoscopy for $\widetilde{\mathrm{Sp}}(2n)$ is the geometric transfer of orbital integrals to its elliptic endoscopic groups. The dual of this map, called the spectral transfer, is expected to yield endoscopic character relations which should reveal the internal structure of $L$-packets. As a first step, we characterize the image of the collective geometric transfer in the non-archimedean case, then reduce the spectral transfer to the case of c…
We prove the conjectural endoscopic transfer of L-packets for the local Langlands correspondence for pure inner forms of unramified p-adic groups and depth-zero parameters established by DeBacker and Reeder. More precisely, we show that under mild conditions on the residual characteristic, endoscopic induction identifies an unstable character of such an L-packet with the stable character of the corresponding endoscopic L-packet.
In this paper, we prove the conjectural endoscopic character identities for tempered representations of metaplectic group $Mp_{2n}$ based on the formalism of endoscopy theory by J. Adams, D. Renard and W.W. Li.

In this note we show that all reductive groups are clean in odd characteristic. In characteristic 2 there are two cuspidal local systems (one for $F_4$ and one for $E_8$) which can not be handled by our method.
We show that the two cuspidal unipotent characters of a finite Chevalley group $E_7(q)$ have Schur index~2, provided that $q$ is an even power of a (sufficiently large) prime number $p$ such that $p\equiv 1 \bmod 4$. The proof uses a refinement of Kawanaka's generalized Gelfand--Graev representations and some explicit computations with the {\sf CHEVIE} computer algebra system.
In previous work of Gow, Ohmori, Lusztig and the author, the Schur indices of all unipotent characters of finite groups of Lie type have been explicitly determined except for six cases in groups of type $F_4$, $E_7$ and $E_8$. In this paper, we show that the Schur indices of all cuspidal unipotent characters for type $F_4$ and $E_8$ are~1, assuming that the group is defined over a field of ``good'' characteristic. This settles four out of the six open cases. For type $E_7$, we show that the Schur indices are at most~2.
For a classical group over a non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic p, we construct all cuspidal representations over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic different from p, as representations induced from a cuspidal type. We also give a fundamental step towards the classification of cuspidal representations, identifying when certain cuspidal types induce to equivalent representations; this result is new even in the case of complex representations. Finally, we prove that the representations induced from more general types are quasi-projective, a crucial …
We give a description of all the cuspidal representations of $\mathrm{GL}_4(\mathfrak{o}_2)$, where $\mathfrak{o}_2$ is a finite ring coming from the ring of integers in a local field, modulo the square of its maximal ideal $\mathfrak{p}$. This shows in particular the existence of representations which are cuspidal, yet are not strongly cuspidal, that is, do not have orbit with irreducible characteristic polynomial mod $\mathfrak{p}$. It has been shown by Aubert, Onn, and Prasad that this phenomenon cannot occur for $\mathrm{GL}_n$, when $n$ is prime.
Cuspidal representations of a reductive p-adic group G over a field of characteristic different from p are relatively injective and projective with respect to extensions that split by a U-equivariant linear map for any subgroup U that is compact modulo the centre. The category of smooth representations over a field whose characteristic does not divide the pro-order of G is the product of the subcategories of cuspidal representations and of subrepresentations of direct sums of parabolically induced representations.
The formal degree of a unipotent discrete series character of a simple linear algebraic group over a non-archimedean local field (in the sense of Lusztig), is a rational function of the cardinality q of the residue field. The irreducible factors of this rational function are $q$ and cyclotomic polynomials. We prove that the formal degree of a supercuspidal unipotent representation determines its Lusztig-Langlands parameter, up to twisting by weakly unramified characters. For split exceptional groups this result follows from the work of Mark Reeder, and for the remaining exceptional cases this …
The irreducible characters of a finite reductive group are partitioned into Harish-Chandra series that are labelled by cuspidal pairs. In this note, we describe how one can algorithmically calculate those cuspidal pairs using results of Lusztig.
We investigate the action of outer automorphisms of finite groups of Lie type on their irreducible characters. We obtain a definite result for cuspidal characters. As an application we verify the inductive McKay condition for some further infinite families of simple groups at certain primes.
We compute the characters of simple supercuspidal representations of twisted GL(2n) and standard SO(2n+1) over a p-adic field. Comparing them by the endoscopic character relation, we determine the liftings of simple supercuspidal representations of SO(2n+1) to GL(2n), under the assumption that p is not equal to 2.
We prove a long-standing conjecture of Geck which predicts that cuspidal unipotent characters remain irreducible after $\ell$-reduction. To this end, we construct a progenerator for the category of representations of a finite reductive group coming from generalised Gelfand--Graev representations. This is achieved by showing that cuspidal representations appear in the head of generalised Gelfand--Graev representations attached to cuspidal unipotent classes, as defined and studied in \cite{GM96}.
Let $F/F_{\mathsf{o}}$ be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean locally compact fields of odd residual characteristic and $σ$ be its non-trivial automorphism. We show that any $σ$-self-dual cuspidal representation of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$ contains a $σ$-self-dual Bushnell--Kutzko type. Using such a type, we construct an explicit test vector for Flicker's local Asai $L$-function of a ${\rm GL}_n(F_{\mathsf{o}})$-distinguished cuspidal representation and compute the associated Asai root number. Finally, by using global methods, we compare this root number to Langlands--Shahidi's local Asai root num…
Let U(N) be the quasi-split unitary group in N variables for a quadratic unramified extension of p-adic fields. We compute the characters of simple supercuspidal representations of twisted GL(N) and U(N). Comparing them by the endoscopic character relation, we determine the liftings of simple supercuspidal representations of U(N) to GL(N), under the assumption that p is not equal to 2.
Let F be a non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic p. Let G be a (connected) reductive group that splits over a tamely ramified field extension of F. We show that a construction analogous to Yu's construction of complex supercuspidal representations yields smooth, irreducible, cuspidal representations over an arbitrary algebraically closed field R of characteristic different from p. Moreover, we prove that this construction provides all smooth, irreducible, cuspidal R-representations if p does not divide the order of the Weyl group of G.
Let $F$ be a a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic 0 and $G$ be an inner form of the general linear group $G^*=\mathrm{GL}_n$ over $F$. We show that the rectifying character appearing in the essentially tame Jacquet-Langlands correspondence of Bushnell and Henniart for $G$ and $G^*$ can be factorized into a product of some special characters, called zeta-data in this paper, in the theory of endoscopy of Langlands and Shelstad. As a consequence, the essentially tame local Langlands correspondence for $G$ can be described using admissible embeddings of L-tori.
For a classical group over a non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic p, we prove that two cuspidal types, defined over an algebraically closed field C of characteristic different from p, intertwine if and only if they are conjugate. This completes work of the first and third authors who showed that every irreducible cuspidal C-representation of a classical group is compactly induced from a cuspidal type. We generalize Bushnell and Henniart's notion of endo-equivalence to semisimple characters of general linear groups and to self-dual semisimple characters of classical groups…
Let $F/F_0$ be a quadratic extension of non-Archimedean locally compact fields of residual characteristic $p\neq2$, and let $σ$ denote its non-trivial automorphism. Let $R$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from $p$. To any cuspidal representation $π$ of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$, with coefficients in $R$, such that $π^σ\simeqπ^{\vee}$ (such a representation is said to be $σ$-selfdual) we associate a quadratic extension $D/D_0$, where $D$ is a tamely ramified extension of $F$ and $D_0$ is a tamely ramified extension of $F_0$, together with a quadratic character of $D_0^{\times…
The main aim of this paper is to associate to every cuspidal unipotent character of the Suzuki group its root of unity and to give a possible defintion of the Fourier matrix associated to the family of cuspidal unipotent characters of this group. We compute to this end the Shintani descents of Suzuki groups and use results of Digne and Michel.
For a cuspidal automorphic representation Πof GL(4,A), H. Kim proved that the exterior square transfer \wedge^2Πis an isobaric automorphic representation of GL(6,A). In this paper we characterize those representations Πfor which \wedge^2Πis cuspidal.
Let $F$ be any non-Archimedean local field with a Galois involution $σ$ and $F_0$ be the fixed field for the action of $σ$. When the residue characteristic of $F_0$ is odd, using the explicit construction of cuspidal representations of classical groups by Stevens, we classify generic cuspidal representations of $U(2,1)(F/F_0)$.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of residue characteristic $p$, $G$ be the group $GL(n, F)$. In this note, under the assumption $(n, p)=1$, we show a simple cuspidal representation $π$ (that with normalized level $\frac{1}{n}$) of $G$ is determined uniquely up to isomorphism by the local constants of $χ\circ \text{det}\otimes π$ for all characters $χ$ of $F^\times$.
We show how the modular representation theory of inner forms of general linear groups over a non-Archimedean local field can be brought to bear on the complex theory in a remarkable way. Let F be a non-Archimedean locally compact field of residue characteristic p, and let G be an inner form of the general linear group GL(n,F). We consider the problem of describing explicitly the local Jacquet--Langlands correspondence between the complex discrete series representations of G and GL(n,F), in terms of type theory. We show that the congruence properties of the local Jacquet--Langlands corresponden…
Theta representations appear globally as the residues of Eisenstein series on covers of groups; their unramified local constituents may be characterized as subquotients of certain principal series. A cuspidal theta representation is one which is equal to the local twisted theta representation at almost all places. Cuspidal theta representations are known to exist but only for covers of $GL_j$, $j\leq 3$. In this paper we establish necessary conditions for the existence of cuspidal theta representations on the $r$-fold metaplectic cover of the general linear group of arbitrary rank.
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of non archimedean local fields of odd residual characteristic. We prove a conjecture of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash, in the case of cuspidal representations of depth zero of $\mathrm{GL}(2m,F)$. This conjecture characterizes distinction for the pair $(\mathrm{GL}(2m,F),\mathrm{GL}(m,E))$ with respect to a character $μ\circ \mathrm{det}$ of $\mathrm{GL}(m,E)$, in terms of certain conditions on Langlands paremeters, including an epsilon value. We also compute the multiplicity of the involved equivariant linear forms when $E/F$ is unramified, and also when $μ$ is…

A cuspidal system for an affine Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algerba $R_\al$ yields a theory of standard modules. This allows us to classify the irreducible modules over $R_\al$ up to the so-called imaginary modules. We make a conjecture on reductions modulo $p$ of irreducible $R_\al$-modules, which generalizes James Conjecture. We also describe minuscule imaginary modules, laying the groundwork for future study of imaginary Schur-Weyl duality. We introduce colored imaginary tensor spaces and reduce a classification of imaginary modules to one color. We study the characters of cuspidal modules. We …
In this paper, we prove certain multiplicity one theorems and define twisted gamma factors for irreducible generic cuspidal representations of split $G_2$ over finite fields $k$ of odd characteristic. Then we prove the first converse theorem for exceptional groups, namely, $GL_1$ and $GL_2$-twisted gamma factors will uniquely determine an irreducible generic cuspidal representation of $G_2(k)$.
The endoscopic transfer factor is expressed as difference of characters for the even and odd parts of the spin modules, or Dirac index of the trivial representation. The lifting of tempered characters in terms of index of Dirac cohomology is calculated explicitly.
Given a quaternionic form G of a p-adic classical group (p odd) we classify all cuspidal irreducible representations of G with coefficients in an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from p. We prove two theorems: At first: Every irreducible cuspidal representation of G is induced from a cuspidal type, i.e. from a certain irreducible representation of a compact open subgroup of G, constructed from a beta-extension and a cuspidal representation of a finite group. Secondly we show that two intertwining cuspidal types of G are up to equivalence conjugate under some element of G.
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields, and let $\ell$ be a prime number different from the residual characteristic of $F$. For a complex cuspidal representation $π$ of $GL(n,E)$, the Asai $L$-factor $L^+(X,π)$ has a pole at $X=1$ if and only if $π$ is $GL(n,F)$-distinguished. In this paper we solve the problem of characterising the occurrence of a pole at $X=1$ of $L^+(X,π)$ when $π$ is an $\ell$-modular cuspidal representation of $GL(n,E)$: we show that $L^+(X,π)$ has a pole at $X=1$ if and only if $π$ is a relatively banal distinguished representation; namely $π$…
Let $π_1,π_2$ be a pair of cuspidal complex, or $\ell$-adic, representations of the general linear group of rank $n$ over a non-archimedean local field $F$ of residual characteristic $p$, different to $\ell$. Whenever the local Rankin-Selberg $L$-factor $L(X,π_1,π_2)$ is nontrivial, we exhibit explicit test vectors in the Whittaker models of $π_1$ and $π_2$ such that the local Rankin-Selberg integral associated to these vectors and to the characteristic function of $\mathfrak{o}_F^n$ is equal to $L(X,π_1,π_2)$. We give an initial application of the test vectors to reduction modulo $\ell$ of $\…
In this paper, we study top Fourier coefficients of certain automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Jiang on top Fourier coefficients of isobaric automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$ of form $$ Δ(τ_1, b_1) \boxplus Δ(τ_2, b_2) \boxplus \cdots \boxplus Δ(τ_r, b_r)\,, $$ where $Δ(τ_i,b_i)$'s are Speh representations in the discrete spectrum of $\mathrm{GL}_{a_ib_i}(\mathbb{A})$ with $τ_i$'s being unitary cuspidal representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{a_i}(\mathbb{A})$, and $n = \sum_{i=1}^r a_ib_i$. Endoscopic lifting i…
In the case of p-adic general linear groups, each irreducible representation is parabolically induced by a tensor product of irreducible representations supported by cuspidal lines. One gets in this way a parameterization of the irreducible representations of p-adic general linear groups by irreducible representations supported by cuspidal lines. It is obvious that in this correspondence an irreducible representation of a p-adic general linear group is unitarizable if and only if all the corresponding irreducible representations supported by cuspidal lines are unitarizable. C. Jantzen has defi…
Let $G$ be a symplectic group over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero and odd residual characteristic. Given an irreducible cuspidal representation of G, we determine its Langlands parameter (equivalently, its Jordan blocks in the language of Moeglin) in terms of the local data from which the representation is explicitly constructed, up to a possible unramified twist in each block of the parameter. We deduce a Ramification Theorem for $G$, giving a bijection between the set of endo-parameters for $G$ and the set of restrictions to wild inertia of discrete Langlands parameters …
We follow Jacquet-Shalika, Matringe and Cogdell-Matringe to define exterior square gamma factors for irreducible cuspidal representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. These exterior square gamma factors are expressed in terms of Bessel functions, or in terms of the regular characters associated with the cuspidal representations. We also relate our exterior square gamma factors over finite fields to those over local fields through level zero representations.
