We give an explicit construction and clasification of some very special sort of Enriques surfaces in characteristic two. This proves the existence of some of the surfaces that were called ``extra-special'' by Cossec and Dolgachev in their book on the subject, and whose existence was left open by them. These surfaces coincide with a class of surfaces that are introduced in recent work by Ekedahl and Shepherd--Barron.
We give a notion of ordinary Enriques surfaces and their canonical lifts in any positive characteristic, and we prove Torelli-type results for this class of Enriques surfaces.
We classifiy Enriques surfaces covered by the supersingular K3 surface with the Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 2. There are exactly three types of such Enriques surfaces.
We classify supersingular and classical Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group in characteristic 2 into 8 types according to their dual graphs of all $(-2)$-curves (nonsigular rational curves). We give examples of these Enriques surfaces together with their canonical coverings. It follows that the classification of all Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group in any characteristics has been finished.
Complex Enriques surfaces with a finite group of automorphisms are classified into seven types. In this paper, we determine which types of such Enriques surfaces exist in characteristic 2. In particular we give a one dimensional family of classical and supersingular Enriques surfaces with the automorphism group isomorphic to the symmetric group of degree five.
We extend to arbitrary characteristic some known results about automorphisms of complex Enriques surfaces that act trivially on the cohomology or the cohomology modulo torsion.
We prove that, for an Enriques surface in odd characteristic, the automorphism group is finitely generated and it acts on the effective nef cone with a rational polyhedral fundamental domain. We also construct a smooth projective surface in odd characteristic which is birational to an Enriques surface and whose automorphism group is discrete but not finitely generated.
We prove that a twisted Enriques (respectively, untwisted bielliptic) surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic at least 3 (respectively, at least 5) has no non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partners.
We give a complete classification of Q_l-cohomology projective planes with isolated ADE-singularities and numerically trivial canonical bundle in odd characteristic. This leads to a beautiful relation with certain Enriques surfaces which parallels the situation in characteristic zero, yet displays intriguing subtleties.
Working in characteristic two, I classify nonsmooth Enriques surfaces with normal crossing singularities. Using Kato's theory of logarithmic structures, I show that such surfaces are smoothable and lift to characteristic zero, provided they are d-semistable.
We give a 1-dimensional family of classical and supersingular Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 covered by the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1. Moreover we show that there exist 30 nonsingular rational curves and ten non-effective (-2)-divisors on these Enriques surfaces whose reflection group is of finite index in the orthogonal group of the Neron-Severi lattice modulo torsion.
We show that most classes of K3 surfaces have only finitely many Enriques quotients. For supersingular K3 surfaces over fields of characteristic $p \geq 3$, we give a formula which generically yields the number of their Enriques quotients. We reprove via a lattice theoretic argument that supersingular K3 surfaces always have an Enriques quotient over fields of small characteristic. For some small characteristics and some Artin invariants, we explicitly compute lower bounds for the number of Enriques quotients of a supersingular K3 surface. We show that the supersingular K3 surface of Artin inv…
We prove that a smooth projective surface $S$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>3$ is birational to an abelian surface if $P_1(S)=P_4(S)=1$ and $h^1(S,\mathcal{O}_S)=2$.
We construct the moduli space of Enriques surfaces in positive characteristic and eventually over the integers, and determine its local and global structure. As an application, we show lifting of Enriques surfaces to characteristic zero. The key observation is that the canonical double cover of an Enriques surface is birational to the complete intersection of three quadrics in IP^5, even in characteristic 2.
We prove that any Fourier--Mukai partner of an abelian surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is isomorphic to a moduli space of Gieseker-stable sheaves. We apply this fact to show that the Fourier--Mukai set of canonical covers of hyperelliptic and Enriques surfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic greater than three is trivial. These results extend to positive characteristic earlier results of Bridgeland--Maciocia and Sosna.
We study the pencils of minimal degree on the smooth curves lying on a K3 surface X which carries a fixed-point free involution. Generically, the gonality of these curves is totally governed by the genus 1 fibrations of X
Let $f$ be an automorphism of a complex Enriques surface $Y$ and let $p_f$ denote the characteristic polynomial of the isometry $f^*$ of the numerical Néron-Severi lattice of $Y$ induced by $f$. We apply a modification of McMullen's method to prove that the modulo-$2$ reduction $(p_f(x) \bmod 2)$ is a product of modulo-$2$ reductions of (some of) the five cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_m$, where $m \leq 9$ and $m$ is odd. We study Enriques surfaces that realize modulo-$2$ reductions of $Φ_7$, $Φ_9$ and show that each of the five polynomials $(Φ_m(x) \bmod 2)$ is a factor of the modulo-$2$ reduction…
Let $\bar{Y}$ be a normal surface that is the canonical $μ_2$- or $α_2$-covering of a classical or supersingular Enriques surface in characteristic $2$. We determine all possible configurations of singularities on $\bar{Y}$, and for each configuration we describe which type of Enriques surfaces (classical or supersingular) appear as quotients of $\bar{Y}$.
We give a complete description of all classical Enriques surfaces with non-zero global vector fields. In particular we show that there are such surfaces. The obtained result also applies to supersingular Enriques surfaces fulfilling a rather special condition. During this classification we study some properties of genus 1-fibrations special to characteristic as well as make a close study of the genus 1-fibration on the surfaces that we classify.
It follows from an observation of A. Coble in 1919 that the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface contains the $2$-congruence subgroup of the Weyl group of the $E_{10}$-lattice. In this article, we determine how much bigger the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface can be. Furthermore, we show that the automorphism group is in fact equal to the $2$-congruence subgroup for generic Enriques surfaces in arbitrary characteristic (under the additional assumption that the Enriques surface is ordinary if the characteristic is $2$), improving the corresponding result of W. Bart…
We show that Hilbert schemes of points on supersingular Enriques surface in characteristic 2 are simply connected, symplectic varieties but are not irreducible symplectic as the hodge number $h^{2,0} > 1$, even though a supersingular Enriques surface is an irreducible symplectic variety. These are the classes of varieties which appear only in characteristic 2 and they show that the hodge number formula for Göttsche-Soergel does not hold over characteristic 2. It also gives examples of varieties with trivial canonical class which are neither irreducible symplectic nor Calabi-Yau, thereby showin…
Mondromy and deformation-and-specialization arguments are used to produce a pencil of Enriques surfaces with no section and index one. The same technique completes the proof that the witness curves in "Rational connectivity ..." depend on the relative dimension.
The main goal of this paper is to show that Castelnuovo- Enriques' $P_{12}$-theorem also holds for algebraic surfaces $S$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic ($char(k) = p > 0$). The $P_{12}$-theorem is a precise version of the rough classification of algebraic surfaces, in particular the conditions $P_{12} = 0$, $P_{12} = 1$,$P_{12} \geq 2$ are respectively equivalent to : Kodaira dimension $-\infty, 0 , \geq 1$. The result relies on a main theorem describing the growth of the plurigenera for properly-elliptic or properly quasi-elliptic surfaces (surfaces…

We construct a moduli space of adequately marked Enriques surfaces that have a supersingular K3 cover over fields of characteristic $p \geq 3$. We show that this moduli space exists as a scheme locally of finite type over $\mathbb{F}_p$. Moreover, there exists a period map from this moduli space to a period scheme and we obtain a Torelli theorem for supersingular Enriques surfaces.
We classify Enriques surfaces with smooth K3 cover and finite automorphism group in arbitrary positive characteristic. The classification is the same as over the complex numbers except that some types are missing in small characteristics. Moreover, we give a complete description of the moduli of these surfaces. Finally, we realize all types of Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group over the prime fields $\mathbb{F}_p$ and $\mathbb{Q}$ whenever they exist.
In this paper, we prove, as the complex case, a supersingular K3 surface over a field of odd characteristic has an Enriques involution if and only if there exists a primitive embedding of the twice of the Enriques lattice into the Neron-Severi group such that the orthogonal complement of the embedding has no vector of self-intersection -2 using the Crystalline Torelli theorem. By this criterion and some lattice calculation, we prove that when the characteristic of the base field is p=19 or p>23, a superingular K3 surface is an Enriques K3 surface if and only if the Artin invariant is less than…
Given d in IN, we prove that any polarized Enriques surface (over any field of characteristic different from 2 or with a smooth K3 cover) of degree greater than 12d^2 contains at most 12 rational curves of degree at most d. For d>2 we construct examples of Enriques surfaces of high degree that contain exactly 12 rational degree d curves.
After an Introduction to the themes of Enriques surfaces and Rationality questions, the Artin-Mumford counterexample to Lueroth problem is revisited. A construction of it is given, which is related in an explicit way to the geometry of Enriques surfaces, more precisely to the special family of Reye congruences and their classical geometry.
An automorphism of an algebraic surface $S$ is called cohomologically (numerically) trivial if it acts identically on the second $l$-adic cohomology group (this group modulo torsion subgroup). Extending the results of S. Mukai and Y. Namikawa to arbitrary characteristic $p > 0$, we prove that the group of cohomologically trivial automorphisms $\rm{Aut}_{\rm{ct}}(S)$ of an Enriques surface $S$ is of order $\leq 2$ if $S$ is not supersingular. If $p = 2$ and $S$ is supersingular, we show that $\rm{Aut}_{\rm{ct}}(S)$ is a cyclic group of odd order $n\in \{1,2,3,5,7,11\}$ or the quaternion group $…
We describe a period map for those simply connected Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 whose canonical double cover is K3. The moduli stack for these surfaces has a Deligne-Mumford quotient that is an open substack of a $\mathbb P^1$-bundle over the period space. We also give some general results relating local and global moduli for algebraic varieties and describe the difference in their dimensions in terms of the failure of the automorphism group scheme to be reduced.
Reflection walls of certain primitive vectors in the anti-invariant sublattice of the K3 lattice define Heegner divisors in the period space of Enriques surfaces. We show that depending on the norm of these primitive vectors, these Heegner divisors are either irreducible or have two irreducible components. The two components are obtained as the walls orthogonal to primitive vectors of the same norm but of different type as ordinary or characteristic.
We prove that two general Enriques surfaces defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from $2$ are isomorphic if their Kuznetsov components are equivalent. We apply the same techniques to give a new simple proof of a conjecture by Ingalls and Kuznetsov relating the derived categories of the blow-up of general Artin\textendash Mumford quartic double solids and of the associated Enriques surfaces. This paper originated from one of the problem sections at the workshop \emph{Semiorthogonal decompositions, stability conditions and sheaves of categories}, Université de T…
In this note, we prove that the syzygy bundle $M_L$ is cohomologically stable with respect to $L$ for any ample and globally generated line bundle $L$ on an Enriques (resp. bielliptic) surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $\neq 2$ (resp. $\neq 2,3$). In particular our result on complex Enriques surfaces improves a result of Torres-López and Zamora by removing a condition on Clifford index. Together with the results of Camere and Caucci--Lahoz, it implies that $M_L$ is stable with respect to $L$ for an ample and globally generated line bundle $L$ on any smooth minimal co…
These notes are an introduction to and an overview of the theory of algebraic surfaces over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic. After some background in characteristic-p-geometry, we sketch the Kodaira-Enriques classification. Next, we turn to more special characteristic-p topics, and end by lifting results and applications to characteristic zero. We assume that the reader has a background in complex geometry and has seen the Kodaira-Enriques classification of complex surfaces before.
In this article we explicitly compute equations of an Enriques surface via the involution on a K3 surface. We also discuss its tropicalization and compute the tropical homology, thus recovering a special case of the result of \cite{IKMZ}, and establish a connection between the dimension of the tropical homology groups and the Hodge numbers of the corresponding algebraic Enriques surface.
We prove that two Enriques surfaces defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from $2$ are isomorphic if their Kuznetsov components are equivalent. This improves and completes our previous result joint with Nuer where the same statement is proved for generic Enriques surfaces.

Consider a cubic surface satisfying the mild condition that it may be described in Sylvester's pentahedral form. There is a well-known Enriques or Coble surface S with K3 cover birationally isomorphic to the Hessian surface of this cubic surface. We describe the nef cone and the (-2)-curves of S. In the case of pentahedral parameters (1, 1, 1, 1, nonzero t) we compute the automorphism group of S. For t not 1 it is the semidirect product of the free product (Z/2)*(Z/2)*(Z/2)*(Z/2) by the symmetric group S4. In the special case t=1/16 we study the action of Aut(S) on an invariant smooth rational…
We define the over-exceptional lattice of a minimal algebraic surface of Kodaira dimension 0. Bounding the rank of this object, we prove that a conjecture by Campana and Corvaja--Zannier holds for Enriques surfaces, as well as K3 surfaces of Picard rank greater than 6 apart from a finite list of geometric Picard lattices. Concretely, we prove that such surfaces over finitely generated fields of characteristic 0 satisfy the weak Hilbert property after a finite field extension of the base field. The degree of the field extension can be uniformly bounded.
The elliptic modular surface of level 4 is a complex K3 surface with Picard number 20. This surface has a model over a number field such that its reduction modulo 3 yields a surface isomorphic to the Fermat quartic surface in characteristic 3, which is supersingular. The specialization induces an embedding of the Néron-Severi lattices. Using this embedding, we determine the automorphism group of this K3 surface over a discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic whose residue field is of characteristic 3. The elliptic modular surface of level 4 has a fixed-point free involution that gives r…
