Given d in IN, we prove that any polarized Enriques surface (over any field of characteristic different from 2 or with a smooth K3 cover) of degree greater than 12d^2 contains at most 12 rational curves of degree at most d. For d>2 we construct examples of Enriques surfaces of high degree that contain exactly 12 rational degree d curves.
We classify, up to some lattice-theoretic equivalence, all possible configurations of rational double points that can appear on a surface whose minimal resolution is a complex Enriques surface.
It was Fano who first classified Enriques-Fano threefolds. However his arguments appear to contain several gaps. In this paper, we will verify some of his assertions through the use of modern techniques.
We complete our study of linear series on curves lying on an Enriques surface by showing that, with the exception of smooth plane quintics, there are no exceptional curves on Enriques surfaces, that is, curves for which the Clifford index is not computed by a pencil.
In this paper, we describe the simple isotropic decompositions of the curve sections of the known Enriques-Fano threefolds. The simple isotropic decompositions allow us to identify the irreducible components of the moduli space of the polarized Enriques surfaces. Thus, our analysis will enable us to show to which families of polarized Enriques surfaces the hyperplane sections of the Enriques-Fano threefolds belong.
Let $X$ be an Enriques surface defined over a number field $K$. Then there exists a finite extension $K'/K$ such that the set of $K'$-rational points of $X$ is Zariski dense.
This paper proposes a new geometric construction of Enriques surfaces. Its starting point are K3 surfaces with jacobian elliptic fibration which arise from rational elliptic surfaces by a quadratic base change. The Enriques surfaces obtained in this way are characterised by elliptic fibrations with a rational curve as bisection which splits into two sections on the covering K3 surface. The construction has applications to the study of Enriques surfaces with specific automorphisms. It also allows us to answer a question of Beauville about Enriques surfaces whose Brauer groups show an exceptiona…
We calculate the automorphism group of certain Enriques surfaces. The Enriques surfaces that we investigate include very general $n$-nodal Enriques surfaces and very general cuspidal Enriques surfaces. We also describe the action of the automorphism group on the set of smooth rational curves and on the set of elliptic fibrations.
We use vector-bundle techniques in order to compute $\dim W^1_d(C)$ where $C$ is general and smooth in a linear system on an unnodal Enriques surface. We furthermore find new examples of smooth curves on Enriques surfaces with an infinite number of $g^1_{\gon(C)}$'s.
Log Enriques surface is a generalization of K3 and Enriques surface. We will classify all the rational log Enriques surfaces of rank 18 by giving concrete models for the realizable types of these surfaces.
We study adjacency of equisingularity types of planar curve singularities in terms of their Enriques diagrams. For linear adjacency a complete answer is obtained, whereas for arbitrary (analytic) adjacency a necessary condition and a sufficient condition are proved. We also show an example of singular curve of type D' that can be deformed to a curve of type D without D' being adjacent to D.
Making suitable generalizations of known results we prove some general facts about Gaussian maps. The above are then used, in the second part of the article, to give a set of conditions that insure the surjectivity of Gaussian maps for curves on Enriques surfaces. To do this we also solve a problem of independent interest: a tetragonal curve of genus g > 6 lying on an Enriques surface and general in its linear system, cannot be, in its canonical embedding, a quadric section of a surface of degree g - 1 in P^{g - 1}.
We study the pencils of minimal degree on the smooth curves lying on a K3 surface X which carries a fixed-point free involution. Generically, the gonality of these curves is totally governed by the genus 1 fibrations of X
Mondromy and deformation-and-specialization arguments are used to produce a pencil of Enriques surfaces with no section and index one. The same technique completes the proof that the witness curves in "Rational connectivity ..." depend on the relative dimension.
We classify supersingular and classical Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group in characteristic 2 into 8 types according to their dual graphs of all $(-2)$-curves (nonsigular rational curves). We give examples of these Enriques surfaces together with their canonical coverings. It follows that the classification of all Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group in any characteristics has been finished.
We compute the monodromy groups of real Enriques surfaces of hyperbolic type. The principal tools are the deformation classification of such surfaces and a modified version of Donaldson's trick, relating real Enriques surfaces and real rational surfaces.
We prove that, for an Enriques surface in odd characteristic, the automorphism group is finitely generated and it acts on the effective nef cone with a rational polyhedral fundamental domain. We also construct a smooth projective surface in odd characteristic which is birational to an Enriques surface and whose automorphism group is discrete but not finitely generated.
We study the deformations of a curve $C$ on an Enriques-Fano $3$-fold $X \subset \mathbb P^n$, assuming that $C$ is contained in a smooth hyperplane section $S \subset X$, that is a smooth Enriques surface in $X$. We give a sufficient condition for $C$ to be (un)obstructed in $X$, in terms of half pencils and $(-2)$-curves on $S$. Let $\operatorname{Hilb}^{sc} X$ denote the Hilbert scheme of smooth connected curves in $X$. By using the Hilbert-flag scheme of $X$, we also compute the dimension of $\operatorname{Hilb}^{sc} X$ at $[C]$ and give a sufficient condition for $\operatorname{Hilb}^{sc}…
For an Enriques surface $S$, the non-degeneracy invariant $\mathrm{nd}(S)$ retains information on the elliptic fibrations of $S$ and its polarizations. In the current paper, we introduce a combinatorial version of the non-degeneracy invariant which depends on $S$ together with a configuration of smooth rational curves, and gives a lower bound for $\mathrm{nd}(S)$. We provide a SageMath code that computes this combinatorial invariant and we apply it in several examples. First we identify a new family of nodal Enriques surfaces satisfying $\mathrm{nd}(S)=10$ which are not general and with infini…
We give a 1-dimensional family of classical and supersingular Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 covered by the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1. Moreover we show that there exist 30 nonsingular rational curves and ten non-effective (-2)-divisors on these Enriques surfaces whose reflection group is of finite index in the orthogonal group of the Neron-Severi lattice modulo torsion.
After an Introduction to the themes of Enriques surfaces and Rationality questions, the Artin-Mumford counterexample to Lueroth problem is revisited. A construction of it is given, which is related in an explicit way to the geometry of Enriques surfaces, more precisely to the special family of Reye congruences and their classical geometry.
The main purpose in this paper is to study the gonality, the Clifford index and the Clifford dimension on linearly equivalent smooth curves on Enriques surfaces. The method is similar to techniques of M.Green $\&$ R.Lazarsfeld and G.Pareschi.
Let $W\subset \mathbb{P}^{13}$ be the image of the rational map defined by the linear system of the sextic surfaces of $\mathbb{P}^3$ having double points along the edges of a tetrahedron. Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the linear system of the hyperplane sections of $W$. It is known that a general $S\in \mathcal{L}$ is an Enriques surface. The aim of this paper is to study the sublinear system $\mathcal{L}_{\bullet}\subset \mathcal{L}$ of the hyperplane sections of $W$ having a triple point at a general point $w \in W$. We will show that a general element of $\mathcal{L}_{\bullet}$ is birational to an …
We give necessary and sufficient criteria for a smooth Enriques surface S in P^r to be scheme-theoretically an intersection of quadrics. Moreover we prove in many cases that, when S contains plane cubic curves, the intersection of the quadrics containing S is the union of S and the 2-planes spanned by the plane cubic curves. We also give a new (very quick) proof of the projective normality of S if the degree of S is at least 12.
We study the existence of linear series on curves lying on an Enriques surface and general in their complete linear system. Using a method that works also below the Bogomolov-Reider range, we compute, in all cases, the gonality of such curves. We also give a new result about the positive cone of line bundles on an Enriques surface and we show how this relates to the gonality.
Let $L$ be a line bundle on a K3 or Enriques surface. We give a vanishing theorem for $H^1(L)$ that, unlike most vanishing theorems, gives necessary and sufficient geometrical conditions for the vanishing. This result is essential in our study of Brill-Noether theory of curves on Enriques surfaces (reference [KL1]) and of Enriques-Fano threefolds (reference [KLM]).
We give conceptual proofs of some results on the automorphism group of an Enriques surface X, for which only computational proofs have been available. Namely, there is an obvious upper bound on the image of Aut(X) in the isometry group of X's numerical lattice, and we establish a lower bound for the image that is quite close to this upper bound. These results apply over any algebraically closed field, provided that X lacks nodal curves, or that all its nodal curves are (numerically) congruent to each other mod 2. In this generality these results were originally proven by Looijenga and Cossec-D…
We investigate when the fundamental group of the smooth part of a K3 surface or Enriques surface with Du Val singularities, is finite. As a corollary we give an effective upper bound for the order of the fundamental group of the smooth part of a certain Fano 3-fold. This result supports Conjecture A below, while Conjecture A (or alternatively the rational connectedness conjecture in [KoMiMo] which is still open when the dimension is at least 4) would imply that every log terminal Fano variety has a finite fundamental group (now a Theorem of S. Takayama).
A nodal Enriques surface can have at most 8 nodes. We give an explicit description of Enriques surfaces with 8 nodes, showing that they are quotients of products of elliptic curves by a group isomorphic to $\Z_2^2$ or to $\Z_2^3$ acting freely in codimension 1. We use this result to show that if $S$ is a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=0$ such that the image of the bicanonical map is birational to an Enriques surface then $K^2_S=3$ and the bicanonical map is a morphism of degree 2.
Let Y be a complex Enriques surface whose universal cover X is birational to a general quartic Hessian surface. Using the result on the automorphism group of X due to Dolgachev and Keum, we obtain a finite presentation of the automorphism group of Y. A fundamental domain of the action of the automorphism group on the nef cone of Y is described explicitly. The list of elliptic fibrations on Y and the list of combinations of rational double points that can appear on a surface birational to Y are presented. As an application, a set of generators of the automorphism group of the generic Enriques s…
The quotient space of a $K3$ surface by a finite group is an Enriques surface or a rational surface if it is smooth. Finite groups where the quotient space are Enriques surfaces are known. In this paper, by analyzing effective divisors on smooth rational surfaces, we will study finite groups which act faithfully on $K3$ surfaces such that the quotient space are smooth. In particular, we will completely determine effective divisors on Hirzebruch surfaces such that there is a finite Abelian cover from a $K3$ surface to a Hirzebrunch surface such that the branch divisor is that effective divisor.…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a big and nef line bundle L of any degree on a K3 surface or Enriques surface to be k-very ample and k-spanned. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a spanned and big line bundle on a K3 surface to be birationally k-very ample and birationally k-spanned, and relate these concepts to the Clifford index and gonality of smooth curves in |L|.
We construct an Enriques surface X over Q with empty étale-Brauer set (and hence no rational points) for which there is no algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. In addition, if there is a transcendental obstruction on X, then we obtain a K3 surface that has a transcendental obstruction to the Hasse principle.
Consider a cubic surface satisfying the mild condition that it may be described in Sylvester's pentahedral form. There is a well-known Enriques or Coble surface S with K3 cover birationally isomorphic to the Hessian surface of this cubic surface. We describe the nef cone and the (-2)-curves of S. In the case of pentahedral parameters (1, 1, 1, 1, nonzero t) we compute the automorphism group of S. For t not 1 it is the semidirect product of the free product (Z/2)*(Z/2)*(Z/2)*(Z/2) by the symmetric group S4. In the special case t=1/16 we study the action of Aut(S) on an invariant smooth rational…
We show that if a family of complex varieties over a base B admits a section when restricted to a very general curve in B, then the family must contain a subfamily of rationally connected varieties dominating B. As an application, we deduce the existence of one parameter families of Enriques surfaces with no section.
We introduce a new technique, based on Gaussian maps, to study the possibility, for a given surface, to lie on a threefold as a very ample divisor with given normal bundle. We give several applications, among which one to surfaces of general type and another one to Enriques surfaces. For the latter we prove that any threefold (with no assumption on its singularities) having as hyperplane section a smooth Enriques surface (by definition an Enriques-Fano threefold) has genus g < 18 (where g is the genus of its smooth curve sections). The latter bound was also proved recently by Prokhorov, who al…
We study the groups of automorphisms of rational algebraic surfaces that admit a relatively minimal pencil of curves of arithmetic genus one over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. In particular, we classify such surfaces that admit non-trivial automorphisms that act trivially on the Picard group. As an application, we classify classical Enriques surfaces in characteristic $2$ that admit non-trivial numerically trivial automorphisms.
In 2011, Vàrilly-Alvarado and the last author constructed an Enriques surface $X$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with an étale-Brauer obstruction to the Hasse principle and no algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction. In this paper, we show that the nontrivial Brauer class of $X_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ does not descend to $\mathbb{Q}$. Together with the results of Vàrilly-Alvarado and the last author, this proves that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is insufficient to explain all failures of the Hasse principle on Enriques surfaces. The methods of this paper build on the ideas in several recent papers by the last autho…
