Slight change in the statements (and proofs) of Prop.1.4 and of Prop.16.1. Added Rmk. 16.2. We thank János Kollár for pointing out a mistake in the earlier version of Prop.1.4
We introduce a new technique, based on Gaussian maps, to study the possibility, for a given surface, to lie on a threefold as a very ample divisor with given normal bundle. We give several applications, among which one to surfaces of general type and another one to Enriques surfaces. For the latter we prove that any threefold (with no assumption on its singularities) having as hyperplane section a smooth Enriques surface (by definition an Enriques-Fano threefold) has genus g < 18 (where g is the genus of its smooth curve sections). The latter bound was also proved recently by Prokhorov, who also found an example of genus 17. Moreover we find a new Enriques-Fano threefold of genus 9 whose normalization has canonical but not terminal singularities and does not admit Q-smoothings.
A Fano-Enriques threefold is a three-dimensional non-Gorenstein Fano variety of index 1 with at most canonical singularities. We study the birational geometry of Fano-Enriques threefolds with terminal cyclic quotient singularities. We investigate their rationality, and also provide an example of a Fano-Enriques threefold, whose pliability is 9, i.e. a Fano-Enriques threefold birationally equivalent to exactly 9 Mori fibre spaces in Sarkisov category.
In order to find useful information to complete the classification of Enriques-Fano threefolds, we will computationally study the singularities of some known Enriques-Fano threefolds of genus 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13 and 17. We will also deduce the projective normality of these threefolds.
In this paper, we describe the simple isotropic decompositions of the curve sections of the known Enriques-Fano threefolds. The simple isotropic decompositions allow us to identify the irreducible components of the moduli space of the polarized Enriques surfaces. Thus, our analysis will enable us to show to which families of polarized Enriques surfaces the hyperplane sections of the Enriques-Fano threefolds belong.
In this paper we study Fano threefolds with a torsion divisor (Fano--Enriques). Due to this torsion divisor, they can be described as quotients of Fano threefolds by a finite abelian group action. We start from lists of Fano threefolds by Reid, Fletcher and Altınok and check which of them admit such an action with a Fano--Enriques quotient.
It was Fano who first classified Enriques-Fano threefolds. However his arguments appear to contain several gaps. In this paper, we will verify some of his assertions through the use of modern techniques.
This note is a report on the observation that the Enriques-Fano threefolds with terminal cyclic quotient singularities admit Calabi-Yau threefolds as their double coverings. We calculate the invariants of those Calabi-Yau threefolds when the Picard number is one. It turns out that all of them are new examples.
We give a classification of Fano threefolds $X$ with canonical Gorenstein singularities such that $X$ possess a regular involution, which acts freely on some smooth surface in $|-K_X|$, and the linear system $|-K_X|$ gives a morphism which is not an embedding. From this classification one gets, in particular, a description of some natural class of Fano--Enriques threefolds.
Let $U\subset \mathbb P^N$ be a projective variety which is not a cone and whose hyperplane sections are smooth Enriques surfaces. We prove that the degree of a $U$ is at most 32 and the bound is sharp.
We study nodal complete intersection threefolds of type $(2,4)$ in $\PP^5$ which contain an Enriques surface in its Fano embedding. We completely determine Calabi-Yau birational models of a generic such threefold. These models have Hodge numbers $(h^{11},h^{12})=(2,32)$. We also describe Calabi-Yau varieties with Hodge numbers equal to $(2,26)$, $(23,5)$ and $(31,1)$. The last two pairs of Hodge numbers are, to the best of our knowledge, new.
Let $W\subset \mathbb{P}^{13}$ be the image of the rational map defined by the linear system of the sextic surfaces of $\mathbb{P}^3$ having double points along the edges of a tetrahedron. Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the linear system of the hyperplane sections of $W$. It is known that a general $S\in \mathcal{L}$ is an Enriques surface. The aim of this paper is to study the sublinear system $\mathcal{L}_{\bullet}\subset \mathcal{L}$ of the hyperplane sections of $W$ having a triple point at a general point $w \in W$. We will show that a general element of $\mathcal{L}_{\bullet}$ is birational to an …
Let $L$ be a line bundle on a K3 or Enriques surface. We give a vanishing theorem for $H^1(L)$ that, unlike most vanishing theorems, gives necessary and sufficient geometrical conditions for the vanishing. This result is essential in our study of Brill-Noether theory of curves on Enriques surfaces (reference [KL1]) and of Enriques-Fano threefolds (reference [KLM]).
We study threefolds X in a projective space having as hyperplane section a smooth surface with an elliptic fibration. We first give a general theorem about the possible embeddings of such surfaces with Picard number two. More precise results are then proved for Weierstrass fibrations, both of rank two and higher. In particular we prove that a Weierstrass fibration of rank two that is not a K3 surface is not hyperplane section of a locally complete intersection threefold and we give some conditions, for many embeddings of Weierstrass fibrations of any rank, under which every such threefold must…
We prove that there exists a pencil of Enriques surfaces defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with non-algebraic integral Hodge classes of non-torsion type. This gives the first example of a threefold with the trivial Chow group of zero-cycles on which the integral Hodge conjecture fails. As an application, we construct a fourfold which gives the negative answer to a classical question of Murre on the universality of the Abel-Jacobi maps in codimension three.
We prove that the product of an Enriques surface and a very general curve of genus at least 1 does not satisfy the integral Hodge conjecture for 1-cycles. This provides the first examples of smooth projective complex threefolds of Kodaira dimension zero for which the integral Hodge conjecture fails, and the first examples of non-algebraic torsion cohomology classes of degree 4 on smooth projective complex threefolds.
This paper develops families of complex Enriques surfaces whose Brauer groups pull back identically to zero on the covering K3 surfaces. Our methods rely on isogenies with Kummer surfaces of product type. We offer both lattice theoretic and geometric constructions. We also sketch how the construction connects to string theory and Picard-Fuchs equations in the context of Enriques Calabi-Yau threefolds.
The Weakly Special Conjecture contradicts orbifold Mordell, and hence the abc conjecture

We use a topological framework to study descendent Gromov-Witten theory in higher genus, non-toric settings. Two geometries are considered: surfaces of general type and the Enriques Calabi-Yau threefold. We conjecture closed formulas for surfaces of general type in classes K and 2K. For the Enriques Calabi-Yau, Gromov-Witten invariants are calculated in genus 0, 1, and 2. In genus 2, the holomorphic anomaly equation is found.
