We study threefolds X in a projective space having as hyperplane section a smooth surface with an elliptic fibration. We first give a general theorem about the possible embeddings of such surfaces with Picard number two. More precise results are then proved for Weierstrass fibrations, both of rank two and higher. In particular we prove that a Weierstrass fibration of rank two that is not a K3 surface is not hyperplane section of a locally complete intersection threefold and we give some conditions, for many embeddings of Weierstrass fibrations of any rank, under which every such threefold must be a cone.
Shioda described in his article from 1986 a method to compute the Lefschetz number of a Delsarte surface. In one of his examples he uses this method to compute the rank of an elliptic curve over k(t). In this article we find all elliptic curves over k(t) for which his method is applicable. For each of these curves we also compute the Mordell-Weil rank.
Let $X\subset \mathbb {P}^n$ be a linearly normal elliptic curve. For any $P\in \mathbb {P}^n$ the $X$-rank of $P$ is the minimal cardinality of a set $S\subset X$ such that $P\in \langle S\rangle$. In this paper we give an almost complete description of the stratification of $\mathbb {P}^n$ given by the $X$-rank and the open $X$-rank.
We describe two constructions of elliptic K3 surfaces starting from the Kummer surface of the Jacobian of a genus 2 curve. These parallel the base-change constructions of Kuwata for the Kummer surface of a product of two elliptic curves. One of these also involves the analogue of an Inose fibration. We use these methods to provide explicit examples of elliptic K3 surfaces over the rationals of geometric Mordell-Weil rank 15.
We prove that the elliptic surface y^2=x^3+2(t^8+14t^4+1)x+4t^2(t^8+6t^4+1) has geometric Mordell-Weil rank 15. This completes a list of Kuwata, who gave explicit examples of elliptic K3-surfaces with geometric Mordell-Weil rank 0,1,..., 14, 16, 17,18.

For an elliptic curve over Q of analytic rank 1, we use the level-two Selmer variety and secondary cohomology products to find explicit analytic defining equations for global integral points inside the set of p-adic points.
Given a rational elliptic surface over a number field, we study the collection of fibers whose Mordell--Weil rank is greater than the generic rank. We give conditions on the singular fibers to assure that the collection of fibers for which the rank jumps of at least 3 is not thin.
Let $X$ be an elliptic K3 surface endowed with two distinct Jacobian elliptic fibrations $π_i$, $i=1,2$, defined over a number field $k$. We prove that there is an elliptic curve $C\subset X$ such that the generic rank over $k$ of $X$ after a base extension by $C$ is strictly larger than the generic rank of $X$. Moreover, if the generic rank of $π_j$ is positive then there are infinitely many fibers of $π_i$ ($j\neq i$) with rank at least the generic rank of $π_i$ plus one.
This paper is devoted to the function introduced by M. P. Appell in connection with decomposition of elliptic functions of the third kind into simple elements. We show that this function (which appeared as a Fukaya triple product in math.AG/9803017) is related to global sections of rank-2 vector bundles on elliptic curves. We derive analogues of theta-identities for this function and prove the divisibility property for the action of modular group which should be considered as a replacement for functional equation.
We show that the average and typical ranks in a certain parametric family of elliptic curves described by D. Ulmer tend to infinity as the parameter $d \to\infty$. This is perhaps unexpected since by a result of A. Brumer, the average rank for all elliptic curves over a function field of positive characteristic is asymptotically bounded above by 2.3.
Let $M$ be the moduli space of rank 3 stable bundles with fixed determinant of degree 1 on a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$. When $C$ is generic, we show that any essential elliptic curve on $M$ has degree (respect to anti-canonical divisor $-K_{M}$) at least 6, and we give a complete classification for elliptic curves of degree 6, which is not in conformity with Sun's Conjecture. Moreover, if $g>12$, we show that any elliptic curve passing through the generic point of $M$ has degree at least 18.
We produce explicit elliptic curves over \Bbb F_p(t) whose Mordell-Weil groups have arbitrarily large rank. Our method is to prove the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for these curves (or rather the Tate conjecture for related elliptic surfaces) and then use zeta functions to determine the rank. In contrast to earlier examples of Shafarevitch and Tate, our curves are not isotrivial. Asymptotically these curves have maximal rank for their conductor. Motivated by this fact, we make a conjecture about the growth of ranks of elliptic curves over number fields.
We consider an elliptic surface $π: \mathcal{E}\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ defined over a number field $k$ and study the problem of comparing the rank of the special fibres over $k$ with that of the generic fibre over $k(\mathbb{P}^1)$. We prove, for a large class of rational elliptic surfaces, the existence of infinitely many fibres with rank at least equal to the generic rank plus two.
Given an elliptic surface over a number field, we study the collection of fibres whose Mordell-Weil rank is greater than the generic rank. Under suitable assumptions, we show that this collection is not thin. Our results apply to quadratic twist families and del Pezzo surfaces of degree $1$.
We show that for all odd primes $p$, there exist ordinary elliptic curves over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p(x)$ with arbitrarily high rank and constant $j$-invariant. This shows in particular that there are elliptic curves with arbitrarily high rank over these fields for which the corresponding elliptic surface is not supersingular. The result follows from a theorem which states that for all odd prime numbers $p$ and $\ell$, there exists a hyperelliptic curve over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of genus $(\ell-1)/2$ whose Jacobian is isogenous to the power of one ordinary elliptic curve.
An elliptic curve E defined over \Q is an algebraic variety which forms a finitely generated abelian group, and the structure theorem then implies that E = \Z^r + \Z_{tors} for some r \geq 0; this value r is called the rank of E. It is a classical problem in the study of elliptic curves to classify curves by their rank. In this paper, the author uses the method of 2-descent to calculate the rank of two families of elliptic curves, where E is given by E: y^2 = x(x-p)(x-2) with p, p-2 being twin primes.
For the elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ found by Kihara, with torsion group $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$ and rank $\geq 5$, which is the current record for the rank of such curves, by using a suitable injective specialization, we determine exactly the rank and generators of $E(\mathbb{Q}(t))$.
We study the structure of the Mordell--Weil group of elliptic curves over number fields of degree 2, 3, and 4. We show that if $T$ is a group, then either the class of all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with torsion subgroup $T$ is empty, or it contains curves of rank~0 as well as curves of positive rank. We prove a similar but slightly weaker result for cubic and quartic fields. On the other hand, we find a group $T$ and a quartic field $K$ such that among the elliptic curves over $K$ with torsion subgroup $T$, there are curves of positive rank, but none of rank~0. We find examples of …
We give several new constructions for moderate rank elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$. In particular we construct infinitely many rational elliptic surfaces (not in Weierstrass form) of rank 6 over $\mathbb{Q}$ using polynomials of degree two in $T$. While our method generates linearly independent points, we are able to show the rank is exactly 6 \emph{without} having to verify the points are independent. The method generalizes; however, the higher rank surfaces are not rational, and we need to check that the constructed points are linearly independent.
We prove results on the Mordell--Weil rank of elliptic curves $y^2=x(x-αa^2)(x-βb^2)$ parametrized by binary quadratic forms $αa^2+βb^2=γc^2$. We express our explicit lower bounds over number fields and offer a detailed description of the corresponding Mordell-Weil group structure in the function field case.
We introduce the use of $p$-descent techniques for elliptic surfaces over a perfect field of characteristic not $2$ or $3$. Under mild hypotheses, we obtain an upper bound for the rank of a non-constant elliptic surface. When $p=2$, this bound is an arithmetic refinement of a well-known geometric bound for the rank deduced from Igusa's inequality. This answers a question raised by Ulmer. We give some applications to rank bounds for elliptic surfaces over the rational numbers.
We present experimental evidence to support the widely held belief that one half of all elliptic curves have infinitely many rational points. The method used to gather this evidence is a refinement of an algorithm due to the author which is based upon rigid and crystalline cohomology.
We use Hodge theory to prove a new upper bound on the ranks of Mordell-Weil groups for elliptic curves over function fields after regular geometrically Galois extensions of the base field, improving on previous results of Silverman and Ellenberg, when the base field has characteristic zero and the supports of the conductor of the elliptic curve and of the ramification divisor of the extension are disjoint.
We study the family of elliptic curves $y^2=x(x-a^2)(x-b^2)$ parametrized by Pythagorean triples $(a,b,c)$. We prove that for a generic triple the lower bound of the rank of the Mordell-Weil group over $\mathbb{Q}$ is 1, and for some explicitly given infinite family the rank is 2. To each family we attach an elliptic surface fibered over the projective line. We show that the lower bounds for the rank are optimal, in the sense that for each generic fiber of such an elliptic surface its corresponding Mordell-Weil group over the function field $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ has rank 1 or 2, respectively. In ord…
Most systematic tables of data associated to ranks of elliptic curves order the curves by conductor. Recent developments, led by work of Bhargava-Shankar studying the average sizes of $n$-Selmer groups, have given new upper bounds on the average algebraic rank in families of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by height. We describe databases of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by height in which we compute ranks and $2$-Selmer group sizes, the distributions of which may also be compared to these theoretical results. A striking new phenomenon observed in these databases is that …
Over the past two years we have improved several of the (Mordell-Weil) rank records for elliptic curves over Q and nonconstant elliptic curves over Q(t). For example, we found the first example of a curve E/Q with 28 independent points P_i in E(Q) (the previous record was 24, by R.Martin and W.McMillen 2000), and the first example of a curve over Q with Mordell-Weil group isomorphic with (Z/2Z) x Z^18 (the previous rank record for a curve with a 2-torsion point was 15, by Dujella 2002). In these lectures we give some of the background, theory, and computational tools that led to these new reco…
We show that under the assumption of Artin's Primitive Root Conjecture, for all primes p there exist ordinary elliptic curves over $\bar F_p(x)$ with arbitrary high rank and constant j-invariant. For odd primes p, this result follows from a theorem which states that whenever p is a generator of (Z/ell Z)^*/<-1> (ell an odd prime) there exists a hyperelliptic curve over $\bar F_p$ whose Jacobian is isogenous to a power of one ordinary elliptic curve.
We discuss the distribution of Mordell--Weil ranks of the family of elliptic curves $y^2=(x+αf^2)(x+βb g^2)(x+γh^2)$ where $f,g,h$ are coprime polynomials that parametrize the projective smooth conic $a^2+b^2=c^2$ and $α,β,γ$ are elements from $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. In our previous papers we discussed certain special cases of this problem and in this article we complete the picture by proving the general results.
Let E --> C be an elliptic surface defined over a number field K. For each finite covering C' --> C defined over K, let E' --> C' be the pullback. We give a strong upper bound for the rank of E'(C'/K) in the case that C' --> C is an unramified abelian covering and under the assumption that the Tate conjecture is true for the surface E'/K. In the case that C is an elliptic curve and the map C'=C --> C is the multiplication-by-n map, the rank of E'(C'/K) is O(n^e) for every e > 0, which may be compared with the elementary bound of O(n^2).

We explicitly describe the moduli space $M^s(X,3)$ of stable rank 2 parabolic bundles over an elliptic curve $X$ with trivial determinant bundle and 3 marked points. Specifically, we exhibit $M^s(X,3)$ as a blow-up of an embedded elliptic curve in $(\mathbb{CP}^1)^3$. The moduli space $M^s(X,3)$ can also be interpreted as the $SU(2)$ character variety of the 3-punctured torus. Our description of $M^s(X,3)$ reproduces the known Poincaré polynomial for this space.
In this note we show the existence of a family of elliptic conic bundles in P^4 of degree 8. This family has been overlooked and in fact falsely ruled out in a series of classification papers. Our surfaces provide a counterexample to a conjecture of Ellingsrud and Peskine. According to this conjecture there should be no irregular m-ruled surface in P^4 for m at least 2.
We show that the elliptic genus of the higher rank E-strings can be computed based solely on the genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants of the corresponding elliptic geometry. To set up our computation, we study the structure of the topological string free energy on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds both in the unrefined and the refined case, determining the maximal amount of the modular structure of the partition function that can be salvaged. In the case of fibrations exhibiting only isolated fibral curves, we show that the principal parts of the topological string partition function at gi…
We compute the elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) gauged linear sigma models via supersymmetric localization, for rank-one gauge groups. The elliptic genus is expressed as a sum over residues of a meromorphic function whose argument is the holonomy of the gauge field along both the spatial and the temporal directions of the torus. We illustrate our formulas by a few examples including the quintic Calabi-Yau, N=(2,2) SU(2) and O(2) gauge theories coupled to N fundamental chiral multiplets, and a geometric N=(0,2) model.
For a global field K and an elliptic curve E_eta over K(T), Silverman's specialization theorem implies that rank(E_eta(K(T))) <= rank(E_t(K)) for all but finitely many t in P^1(K). If this inequality is strict for all but finitely many t, the elliptic curve E_eta is said to have elevated rank. All known examples of elevated rank for K=Q rest on the parity conjecture for elliptic curves over Q, and the examples are all isotrivial. Some additional standard conjectures over Q imply that there does not exist a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over Q(T) with elevated rank. In positive characteristic, …
