We compute the Bott-Morse Floer cohomology of the Clifford torus in $\CP^n$ with all possible spin-structures. Each spin structure is known to determine an orientation of the moduli space of holomorphic discs, and we analyze the change of orientation according to the change of spin structure of the Clifford torus. Also, we classify all holomorphic discs with boundary lying on the Clifford torus by establishing a Maslov index formula for such discs. As a result, we show that in odd dimensions there exist two spin structures which give non-vanishing Floer cohomology of the Clifford torus, and in even dimensions, there is only one such spin structure. When the Floer cohomology is non-vanishing, it is isomorphic to the singular cohomology of the torus (with a Novikov ring as its coefficients). As a corollary, we prove that any Hamiltonian deformation of the Clifford torus intersects with it at least at $2^n$ distinct intersection points, when the intersection is transversal.
We also compute the Floer cohomology of the Clifford torus with flat line bundles on it and verify the prediction made by Hori using a mirror symmetry calculation.
This is the first part of an article in two parts, which builds the foundation of a Floer-theoretic invariant, (I_F). (See math.DG/0505013 for part II). The Floer homology can be trivial in many variants of the Floer theory; it is therefore interesting to consider more refined invariants of the Floer complex. We consider one such instance--the Reidemeister torsion (τ_F) of the Floer-Novikov complex of (possibly non-hamiltonian) symplectomorphisms. (τ_F) turns out NOT to be invariant under hamiltonian isotopies, but this failure may be fixed by introducing certain ``correction term'': We define…
This is the second part of an article in two parts, which builds the foundation of a Floer-theoretic invariant, I_F. (See math.DG/0111313 for part I). Having constructed I_F and outlined a proof of its invariance based on bifurcation analysis in part I, in this part we prove a series of gluing theorems to confirm the bifurcation behavior predicted in part I. These gluing theorems are different from (and much harder than) the more conventional versions in that they deal with broken trajectories or broken orbits connected at degenerate rest points. The issues of orientation and signs are also se…
This is the third of five papers that construct an isomorphism between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and the Heegaard Floer homology of a given compact, oriented 3-manifold. The isomorphism is given as a composition of three isomorphisms; the first of these relates a version of embedded contact homology on an an auxillary manifold to the Heegaard Floer homology on the original. This paper describes the relationship between the differential on the embedded contact homology chain complex and the differential on the Heegaard Floer chain complex. The paper also describes the relationship betwe…
This is the second of five papers that construct an isomorphism between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and the Heegaard Floer homology of a given compact, oriented 3-manifold. The isomorphism is given as a composition of three isomorphisms; the first of these relates a version of embedded contact homology on an an auxillary manifold to the Heegaard Floer homology on the original. This paper describes this auxilliary manifold, its geometry, and the relationship between the generators of the embedded contact homology chain complex and those of the Heegaard Floer chain complex. The pseudoholom…
We calculate the self-Floer cohomology with Z/2 coefficients of some immersed Lagrangian spheres in the affine symplectic submanifolds of C^3 that are smoothings of A_N surfaces. The immersed spheres are exact and graded. Moreover, they satisfy a positivity assumption that allows us to calculate the Floer cohomology as follows: Given auxiliary data a Morse function on S^2 and a time-dependent almost complex structure, the Floer cochain complex is the Morse complex plus two generators for each self-intersection point of the Lagrangian sphere. The Floer differential is defined by counting combin…
Knot Floer homology is a knot invariant defined using holomorphic curves. In more recent work, taking cues from bordered Floer homology, the authors described another knot invariant, called "bordered knot Floer homology", which has an explicit algebraic and combinatorial construction. In the present paper, we extend the holomorphic theory to bordered Heegaard diagrams for partial knot projections, and establish a pairing result for gluing such diagrams, in the spirit of the pairing theorem of bordered Floer homology. After making some model calculations, we obtain an identification of a variant…
We prove that, like the Seiberg-Witten monopole homology, the Heegaard Floer homology for a three-manifold determines its Thurston norm. As a consequence, we show that knot Floer homology detects the genus of a knot. This leads to new proofs of certain results previously obtained using Seiberg-Witten monopole Floer homology (in collaboration with Kronheimer and Mrowka). It also leads to a purely Morse-theoretic interpretation of the genus of a knot. The method of proof shows that the canonical element of Heegaard Floer homology associated to a weakly symplectically fillable contact structure i…
This note is motivated by Y.G. Oh's conjecture that the Clifford torus $L_n$ in $\mathbb{C}P^n$ minimizes volume in its Hamiltonian deformation class. We show that there exist explicit positive constants $a_n$ depending on the dimension with $a_2=3/π$ such that for any Lagrangian torus $L$ in the Hamiltonian class of $L_n$ we have $vol(L) \geq a_n vol (L_n)$. The proof uses the recent work of C.H. Cho on Floer homology of the Clifford tori. A formula from integral geometry enables us to derive the estimate. We wish to point out that a general lower bound on the volume of $L$ exists from the wo…
We develop Floer theory of Lagrangian torus fibers in compact symplectic toric orbifolds. We first classify holomorphic orbi-discs with boundary on Lagrangian torus fibers. We show that there exists a class of basic discs such that we have one-to-one correspondences between a) smooth basic discs and facets of the moment polytope, and b) between basic orbi-discs and twisted sectors of the toric orbifold. We show that there is a smooth Lagrangian Floer theory of these torus fibers, which has a bulk-deformation by fundamental classes of twisted sectors of the toric orbifold. We show by several ex…
A three-manifold equipped with a Heegaard diagram can be used to set up a Floer homology theory whose differential counts pseudo-holomorphic disks in the $g$-fold symmetric product of the Heegaard surface. This leads to a topological invariant for three-manifolds, Heegaard Floer homology, which is functorial under cobordisms. In this survey article, we sketch this construction and describe some of its topological applications.
The aim of this article is to introduce invariants of oriented, smooth, closed four-manifolds, built using the Floer homology theories defined in two earlier papers (math.SG/0101206 and math.SG/0105202). This four-dimensional theory also endows the corresponding three-dimensional theories with additional structure: an absolute grading of certain of its Floer homology groups. The cornerstone of these constructions is the study of holomorphic disks in the symmetric products of Riemann surfaces.
We use Floer cohomology to prove the monotone version of a conjecture of Audin: the minimal Maslov number of a monotone Lagrangian torus in C^n is 2. Our approach is based on the study of the quantum cup product on Floer cohomology and in particular the behaviour of Oh's spectral sequence with respect to this product. As further applications we prove existence of holomorphic disks with boundaries on Lagrangians as well as new results on Lagrangian intersections.
We define a Floer-homology invariant for knots in an oriented three-manifold, closely related to the holomorphic disk Floer homologies for three-manifolds defined in an earlier paper. We set up basic properties of these invariants, including an Euler characteristic calculation, behaviour under connected sums. Then, we establish a relationship with $HF^+$ for surgeries along the knot. Applications include calculation of $HF^+$ of three-manifolds obtained by surgeries on some special knots in $S^3$, and also calculation of $HF^+$ for certain simple three-manifolds which fiber over the circle.
Let X be the Fermat quintic threefold. The set of real solutions L forms a Lagrangian submanifold of X. Multiplying the homogeneous coordinates of X by various fifth roots of unity gives automorphisms of X; the images of L under these automorphisms defines a family of 625 different Lagrangian submanifolds, called real Lagrangians. In this paper we try to calculate the Floer cohomology between all pairs of these Lagrangians. We are able to complete most of the calculations, but there are a few cases we cannot do. The basic idea is to explicitly describe some low energy moduli spaces and then us…
On one side, from the properties of Floer cohomology, invariant associated to a symplectic manifold, we define and study a notion of symplectic hyperbolicity and a symplectic capacity measuring it. On the other side, the usual notions of complex hyperbolicity can be straightforwardly generalized to the case of almost-complex manifolds by using pseudo-holomorphic curves. That's why we study the links between these two notions of hyperbolicities when a manifold is provided with some compatible symplectic and almost-complex structures. We mainly explain how the non-symplectic hyperbolicity implie…
We explain how to generalize Lazzarini's structural Theorem from [Laz11] to the case of curves with boundary on a given Lagrangian immersion. As a consequence of this result, we show that we can compute Floer homology with time-independent almost complex structures. We also give some applications as well as topics for future work.
In a previous paper, the author introduced a Floer-theoretic torsion invariant I_F, which roughly takes the form of a product of a power series counting perturbed pseudo-holomorphic tori, and the Reidemeister torsion of the symplectic Floer complex. We pointed out the formal resemblance of I_F with a generating function of genus 1 Gromov invariant; furthermore, for heuristic reasons one also expects a relation with the 1-loop generating function in the A-model side of mirror symmetry, which counts genus 1 holomorphic curves. The present article makes this expected relation precise in the simpl…
We analyse holomorphic discs on Lagrangian SU(2)-orbits in a family of quasihomogeneous threefolds of SL(2, C), previously studied by Evans-Lekili, introducing several techniques that should be applicable to wider classes of homogeneous Lagrangians. By studying the closed-open map we place strong restrictions on the self-Floer cohomology of these Lagrangians, which we then compute using the Biran-Cornea pearl complex.
The notion of linear K-system is introduced by the present authors as an abstract model arising from the structure of compactified moduli spaces of solutions to Floer's equation in the book [FOOO14]. The purpose of the present article is to provide a geometric realization of the linear K-system associated with solutions to Floer's equation in the Morse-Bott setting. Immediate consequences (when combined with the abstract theory from [FOOO14]) are construction of Floer cohomology for periodic Hamiltonian system on general compact symplectic manifold without any restriction, and construction of …
We study holomorphic discs with boundary on a Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in a Kaehler manifold admitting a Hamiltonian action of a group $K$ which has $L$ as an orbit. We prove various transversality and classification results for such discs which we then apply to the case of a particular Lagrangian in $\mathbf{CP}^3$ first noticed by Chiang. We prove that this Lagrangian has non-vanishing Floer cohomology if and only if the coefficient ring has characteristic 5, in which case it generates the split-closed derived Fukaya category as a triangulated category.
The main purpose of the present paper is a study of orientations of the moduli spaces of pseudo-holomorphic discs with boundary lying on a \emph{real} Lagrangian submanifold, i.e., the fixed point set of an anti-symplectic involutions $τ$ on a symplectic manifold. We introduce the notion of $τ$-relatively spin structure for an anti-symplectic involution $τ$, and study how the orientations on the moduli space behave under the involution $τ$. We also apply this to the study of Lagrangian Floer theory of real Lagrangian submanifolds. In particular, we study unobstructedness of the $τ$-fixed point…
We use the theory of pseudo-holomorphic quilts to establish a counterpart, in symplectic Floer homology, to the Gysin sequence for the homology of a sphere-bundle. In a motivating class of examples, this "symplectic Gysin sequence" is precisely analogous to an exact sequence describing the behaviour of Seiberg-Witten monopole Floer homology for 3-manifolds under connected sum.
We compute the ring structure of Floer cohomology groups of Lagrangian torus fibers in some toric Fano manifolds continuing the study of \cite{CO}. Related $\AI$-formulas hold for transversal choice of chains. Two different computations are provided: a direct calculation using the classification of holomorphic discs by Oh and the author in \cite{CO}, and another method by using an {\it analogue of divisor equation} in Gromov-Witten invariants to thecase of discs. Floer cohomology rings are shown to be isomorphic to Clifford algebras, whose quadratic forms are given by the Hessians of functions…
We construct a product on the Floer complex associated to a pair of Lagrangian cobordisms. More precisely, given three exact transverse Lagrangian cobordisms in the symplectization of a contact manifold, we define a map $\mathfrak{m}_2$ by a count of rigid pseudo-holomorphic disks with boundary on the cobordisms and having punctures asymptotic to intersection points and Reeb chords of the negative Legendrian ends of the cobordisms. More generally, to a $(d+1)$-tuple of exact transverse Lagrangian cobordisms we associate a map $\mathfrak{m}_d$ such that the family $(\mathfrak{m}_d)_{d\geq1}$ ar…
Open Gromov-Witten invariants in general are not well-defined. We discuss in detail the enumerative numbers of the Clifford torus $T^2$ in $\CP^2$. For cyclic A-infinity algebras, we show that certain generalized way of counting may be defined up to Hochschild or cyclic boundary elements. In particular we obtain a well-defined function on Hochschild or cyclic homology of a cyclic A-infinity algebra, which has invariance property under cyclic A-infinity homomorphism. We discuss an example of Clifford torus $T^2$ and compute the invariant for a specific cyclic cohomology class.
For a simply-connected compact semisimple Lie group $G$ and its maximal torus $T$, we study the $A_{\infty}$-functor associated to the moment Lagrangian correspondence from the cotangent bundle $T^*G$ to the square $G/T^{-} \times G/T$. In particular, we compute the leading term of the $A_{\infty}$-homomorphism from the wrapped Floer cohomology $HW^*(T^*_e G, T^*_e G)$ of the cotangent fiber $T_e^*G$ to the Floer cohomology $HF^*(Δ, Δ)$ of the diagonal $Δ$ in the square $G/T^{-} \times G/T$ by determining the count of certain pseudo-holomorphic quilts. As a consequence, we prove that the Floer…
We construct an unwrapped Floer theory for bundles of Liouville sectors. In particular, we construct a compatible collection of unwrapped Fukaya categories of fibers of a Liouville bundle, and prove that the two natural constructions of continuation maps in this setting behave compatibly. These constructions are exploited in [OT19] to construct homotopically coherent actions of Lie groups on wrapped Fukaya categories, thereby proving a conjecture from Teleman's 2014 ICM address.
Fixing a weakly unobstructed Lagrangian torus in a symplectic manifold X, we define a holomorphic function W known as the Floer potential. We construct a canonical A-infinity functor from the Fukaya category of X to the category of matrix factorizations of W. It provides a unified way to construct matrix factorizations from Lagrangian Floer theory. The technique is applied to toric Fano manifolds to transform Lagrangian branes to matrix factorizations. Using the method, we also obtain an explicit expression of the matrix factorization mirror to the real locus of the complex projective space.
In this paper, we first provide an explicit description of {\it all} holomorphic discs (``disc instantons'') attached to Lagrangian torus fibers of arbitrary compact toric manifolds, and prove their Fredholm regularity. Using this, we compute Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono's (FOOO's) obstruction (co)chains and the Floer cohomology of Lagrangian torus fibers of Fano toric manifolds. In particular specializing to the formal parameter $T^{2π} = e^{-1}$, our computation verifies the folklore that FOOO's obstruction (co)chains correspond to the Landau-Ginzburg superpotentials under the mirror symmetry correspo…
A version of mirror symmetry predicts a ring isomorphism between quantum cohomology of a symplectic manifold and Jacobian algebra of the Landau-Ginzburg mirror, and for toric manifolds Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono constructed such a map called Kodaira-Spencer map using Lagrangian Floer theory. We discuss a general construction of Kodaira-Spencer ring homomorphism when LG mirror potential $W$ is given by $J$-holomorphic discs with boundary on a Lagrangian $L$: we find an $A_{\infty}$-algebra $\mathcal{B}$ whose $m_1$-complex is a Koszul complex for $W$ under mild assumptions on $L$. Closed-open map gives…
A Kuranishi space is a topological space with a Kuranishi structure, defined by Fukaya and Ono. Kuranishi structures occur naturally on moduli spaces of J-holomorphic curves in symplectic geometry. This paper is a brief introduction to the author's book arXiv:0707.3572. Let Y be an orbifold and R a Q-algebra. We define the Kuranishi homology KH_*(Y;R) of Y with coefficients in R. The chain complex KC_*(Y;R) defining KH_*(Y;R) is spanned over R by [X,f,G], for X a compact oriented Kuranishi space with corners, f : X --> Y smooth, and G "gauge-fixing data" which makes Aut(X,f,G) finite. Our main…
