Let v be a rank m discrete valuation of k[[X1,...,Xn]] with dimension n-m. We prove that there exists an inmediate extension L of K where the valuation is monomial. Therefore we compute explicitly the residue field of the valuation.
This paper explores the relationship between real valued monomial valuations on $k(x,y)$, the resolution of cusp singularities, and continued fractions. It is shown that up to equivalence there is a one to one correspondence between real valued monomial valuations on $k(x,y)$ and continued fraction expansions of real numbers between zero and one. This relationship with continued fractions is then used to provide a characterization of the valuation rings for real valued monomial valuations on $k(x,y)$. In the case when the monomial valuation is equivalent to an integral monomial valuation, we e…
Thompson (2014) exhibits a formula for the multiplier ideal with multiplier lambda of a monomial curve C with ideal I as an intersection of a term coming from the I-adic valuation, the multiplier ideal of the term ideal of I, and terms coming from certain specified auxiliary valuations. This short note shows it suffices to consider only one auxiliary valuation. This improvement is achieved through a more intrinsic approach, reduction to the toric case.
It is well known that multi-point Seshadri constants for a small number $s$ of points in the projective plane are submaximal. It is predicted by the Nagata conjecture that their values are maximal for $s\geq 9$ points. Tackling the problem in the language of valuations one can make sense of $s$ points for any positive real $s\geq 1$. We show somewhat surprisingly that a Nagata-type conjecture should be valid for $s\geq 8+1/36$ points and we compute explicitly all Seshadri constants (expressed here as the asymptotic maximal vanishing element) for $s\leq 7+1/9$.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m}_R,k)$ be a one-dimensional complete local reduced $k$-algebra over a field of characteristic zero. R. Berger conjectured that $R$ is regular if and only if the universally finite module of differentials $Ω_R$ is torsion free. When $R$ is a domain, we prove the conjecture in several cases. Our techniques are primarily reliant on making use of the valuation semi-group of $R$. First, we establish a method of verifying the conjecture by analyzing the valuation semi-group of $R$ and orders of units of the integral closure of $R$. We also prove the conjecture in the case when ce…
Suppose that f is a dominant morphism from a k-variety X to a k-variety Y, where k is a field of characteristic 0 and v is a valuation of the function field k(X). We allow v to be an arbitary valuation, so it may not be discrete. We prove that there exist sequences of blowups of nonsingular subvarieties from X' to X and from Y' to Y such that X', Y' are nonsingular and X' to Y' is locally a monomial mapping near the center of v. This extends an earlier result of ours (in Asterisque 260) which proves the above result with the restriction that f is generically finite.
Classically, Groebner bases are computed by first prescribing a set monomial order. Moss Sweedler suggested an alternative and developed a framework to perform such computations by using valuation rings in place of monomial orders. We build on these ideas by providing a class of valuations on rational function fields of two variables that are suitable for this framework. For these valuations, we explicitly compute the image of an underlying polynomial ring and use this to perform computations concerning ideals in the polynomial ring. Interestingly, for these valuations, some ideals have a fini…
The aim of this paper is to introduce a certain number of tools and results suitable for the study of valuations of higher rank on function fields of algebraic varieties. This will be based on a study of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations taking values in the lexicographically ordered group R^k. We prove a duality theorem that gives a geometric realization of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations as tangent cones of dual cone complexes. Using this duality, we provide an analytic description of quasi-monomial valuations as multi-directional derivative operators on tropical functions. We cons…
We characterize ideals whose adjoints are determined by their Rees valuations. We generalize the notion of a regular system of parameters, and prove that for ideals generated by monomials in such elements, the integral closure and adjoints are generated by monomials. We prove that the adjoints of such ideals and of all ideals in two-dimensional regular local rings are determined by their Rees valuations. We prove special cases of subadditivity of adjoints.
We consider the directed union S of an infinite sequence {(R_n, m_n)} of successive local quadratic transforms of a regular local ring (R, m). If dim R = 2, Abhyankar proves that S is a valuation ring. If dim R > 2, Shannon gives necessary and sufficient conditions for S to be a rank 1 valuation domain and Granja gives necessary and sufficient conditions that S be a rank 2 rational rank 2 valuation domain. Granja observes that these are the only cases where S is a valuation domain. If the sequence is along a rank 1 valuation ring V with valuation v, Granja, Martinez, and Rodriguez show that if…
The purpose of this article is to prove that Gersten's conjecture for a commutative discrete valuation ring is true. Combining with the result of \cite{GL87}, we learn that Gersten's conjecture is true if the ring is a commutative regular local, smooth over a commutative discrete valuation ring.
In this paper we study the rank one discrete valuations of the field $k((X_1,..., X_n))$ whose center in $k\lcor\X\rcor$ is the maximal ideal. In sections 2 to 6 we give a construction of a system of parametric equations describing such valuations. This amounts to finding a parameter and a field of coefficients. We devote section 2 to finding an element of value 1, that is, a parameter. The field of coefficients is the residue field of the valuation, and it is given in section 5. The constructions given in these sections are not effective in the general case, because we need either to use the …
Let $I$ be an $m$-generated complete intersection monomial ideal in $S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. We show that the Stanley depth of $I$ is $n-\floor{\frac{m}{2}}$. We also study the upper-discrete structure for monomial ideals and prove that if $I$ is a squarefree monomial ideal minimally generated by 3 elements, then the Stanley depth of $I$ is $n-1$.
We study algebraic discrete valuations dominating normal local domains of dimension two. We construct a family of examples to show that the Hilbert-Samuel function of the associated graded ring of the valuation can fail to be asymptotically of the form: quasi-polynomial plus a bounded function. We also show that the associated multiplicity can be irrational, or even transcendental.
The notion of key polynomials was first introduced in 1936 by S. Maclane in the case of discrete rank 1 valuations. . Let K -> L be a field extension and ν a valuation of K. The original motivation for introducing key polynomials was the problem of describing all the extensions μ of ν to L. Take a valuation μ of L extending the valuation ν. In the case when ν is discrete of rank 1 and L is a simple algebraic extension of K Maclane introduced the notions of key polynomials for μ and augmented valuations and proved that μ is obtained as a limit of a family of augmented valuations on the polynomi…
Let $v$ be a rank-one discrete valuation of the field $k((\X))$. We know, after \cite{Bri2}, that if $n=2$ then the dimension of $v$ is 1 and if $v$ is the usual order function over $k((\X))$ its dimension is $n-1$. In this paper we prove that, in the general case, the dimension of a rank-one discrete valuation can be any number between 1 and $n-1$.
This is an extended introduction to discrete valuation rings and Dedekind domains. Some natural generalizations of Dedekind domains are also (briefly) discussed including "almost Dedekind domains", Prüfer domains, Krull domains, and singular integral domains of dimension 1.
Let A and B be integral domains. Suppose A is Noetherian and B is a finitely generated A-algebra that contains A. Denote by A' the integral closure of A in B. We show that A' is determined by finitely many unique discrete valuation rings. Our result generalizes Rees' classical valuation theorem for ideals. We also obtain a variant of Zariski's main theorem.
We present basic properties of Gröbner bases of submodules of a free module of finite rank over a polynomial ring $R$ with coefficients in a graded truncated discrete valuations ring $A$. As an application, we give a criterion for a finitely generated $R$-module to be flat over $A$. Its non-graded version is also given.
In this paper we study the rank one discrete valuations of $k((X_1,... ,X_n))$ whose center in $k\lcor\X\rcor$ is the maximal ideal $(\X)$. We devote section 2 to finding an element of value 1, that is, a parameter. The field of coefficients is the residue field of the valuation, and it is given in section 5. Let $D$ be an integral domain. Then $D$ is an almost valuation (AV-)domain if for $a, b\in D\setminus \{0\}$ there exists a natural number $n$ with $a^{n}\mid b^{n}$ or $b^{n}\mid a^{n}$. AV-domains are closely related to valuation domains, for example, $D$ is an AV-domain if and only if the integral closure $\bar{D}$ is a valuation domain and $D\subseteq \bar{D}$ is a root extension. In this note we explore various generalizations of DVRs (which we might call almost DVRs) such as Noetherian AV-domains, AV-domains with $\bar{D}$ a DVR, and quasilocal and local API-domains (i.e., for $\{a_α\}_{…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and let K*/K be a finite extension of algebraic function fields of transcendence degree 2 over k. Let v* be a k-valuation of K* with valuation ring V* and let v be the restriction of v* to K. Suppose R --> S is an extension of algebraic regular local rings with quotient fields K and K*, respectively, such that V* dominates S and S dominates R. We prove that there exist sequences of quadratic transforms R --> R' and S --> S' along v* such that S' dominates R' and the map between generating sequences of v and v* in R' and S', respectivel…
Let V be a rank one discrete valuation ring (DVR) on a field F and let L/F be a finite separable algebraic field extension with [L:F] = m. The integral closure of V in L is a Dedekind domain that encodes the following invariants: (i) the number of extensions of V to a valuation ring W on L, (ii) the residue degree of each W over V, and (iii) the ramification degree of each W over V. Given a finite set of DVRs on F, an m-consistent system is a family of sets enumerating what is theoretically possible for the above invariants of each V in the set. The m-consistent system is realizable if there e…
A submodule $W$ of a p-primary module $M$ of bounded order is known to be regular if $W$ and $M$ have simultaneous bases. In this paper we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for regularity of a submodule.
The main scope of this paper is to introduce valuation semirings in general and discrete valuation semirings in particular. In order to do that, first we define valuation maps and investigate them. Then we define valuation semirings with the help of valuation maps and prove that a multiplicatively cancellative semiring is a valuation semiring if and only if its ideals are totally ordered by inclusion. We also prove that if the unique maximal ideal of a valuation semiring is subtractive, then it is integrally closed. We end this paper by introducing discrete valuation semirings and show that a …
Regarding non-unique factorization of integer-valued polynomials over a discrete valuation domain $(R,M)$ with finite residue field, it is known that there exist absolutely irreducible elements, that is, irreducible elements all of whose powers factor uniquely, and non-absolutely irreducible elements. We completely and constructively characterize the absolutely irreducible elements among split integer-valued polynomials. They correspond bijectively to finite sets, which we call \emph{balanced}, characterized by a combinatorial property regarding the distribution of their elements among residue…
Let M and N be two r x r matrices over a discrete valuation ring of characteristic zero. The orders (with respect to a uniformizing parameter) of the invariant factors of M form a partition of non-negative integers, called the invariant partition of M. Let the invariant partition of M be mu, of N be nu, and of the product MN be lambda. In this paper we construct a Littlewood-Richardson filling of the skew shape lambda/mu with content nu, and show that this filling is an invariant of the orbit of the pair (M,N) with respect to a natural group action on the pair. We relate the algebraic combinat…
For a discrete valuation domain $V$ with maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ such that the residue field $V/\mathfrak{m}$ is finite, there exists a sequence of polynomials $(F_n(x))_{n \ge 0}$ defined over the quotient field $K$ of $V$ that forms a basis of the $V$-module $\text{Int}(V) = \{f \in K[x] | f(V)\subseteq V\}$. This sequence of polynomials bears many resemblances to the classical binomial polynomials $(\binom{x}{n})_{n \ge 0}$. In this paper, we introduce a generating polynomial to account for the distribution of the $V$-values of the polynomials $F_n(x)$ modulo the maximal ideal $\mathfr…
Let ${\mathcal O}$ be a discrete valuation ring with quotient field ${\cal K}$. The affine Grassmannian ${\cal G}r$ is the set of full-rank ${\mathcal O}$-modules contained in ${\cal K}^n$. Given $Λ\in {\cal G}r$, invariant factors $inv(Λ)=λ\in {\mathbb Z}^n$ stratify ${\cal G}r$. Left-multiplication by $GL_{n}({\cal K})$ stratifies ${\cal G}r \times {\cal G}r$ where $inv(N,Λ) = μ$ if $(N,Λ)$ and $(I_{n} ,M)$ are in the same $GL_{n}({\cal K})$ orbit, and $inv(M) = μ$. We present an elementary map from ${\cal G}r \times {\cal G}r$ to hives (in the sense of Knutson and Tao) of type $(μ,ν,λ)$ whe…
Using discrete Morse theory, we give an algorithm that prunes the excess of information in the Taylor resolution and constructs a new cellular free resolution for an arbitrary monomial ideal. The pruned resolution is not simplicial in general, but we can slightly modify our algorithm in order to obtain a simplicial resolution. We also show that the Lyubeznik resolution fits into our pruning strategy. We finally use our methods to give a different approach to the theory of splitting of monomial ideals.
Let $I$ be a square-free monomial ideal $I$ of projective dimension one. Starting with the Taylor complex on the generators of $I^r$, we use Discrete Morse theory to describe a CW complex that supports a minimal free resolution of $I^r$. To do so, we concretely describe the acyclic matching on the faces of the Taylor complex.
We develop a new technique for studying monomial ideals in the standard polynomial rings $A[X_1,\ldots,X_d]$ where $A$ is a commutative ring with identity. The main idea is to consider induced ideals in the semigroup ring $R=A[\mathbb{M}^1_{\geq 0}\times\cdots\times\mathbb{M}^d_{\geq 0}]$ where $\mathbb{M}^1,\ldots,\mathbb{M}^d$ are non-zero additive subgroups of $\mathbb{R}$. We prove that the set of non-zero finitely generated monomial ideals in $R$ has the structure of a metric space, and we prove that a version of Krull dimension for this setting is lower semicontinuous with respect to thi…
