Let V be a rank one discrete valuation ring (DVR) on a field F and let L/F be a finite separable algebraic field extension with [L:F] = m. The integral closure of V in L is a Dedekind domain that encodes the following invariants: (i) the number of extensions of V to a valuation ring W on L, (ii) the residue degree of each W over V, and (iii) the ramification degree of each W over V. Given a finite set of DVRs on F, an m-consistent system is a family of sets enumerating what is theoretically possible for the above invariants of each V in the set. The m-consistent system is realizable if there exists a finite separable extension field L/F that gives for each V the listed invariants. We investigate the realizability of m-consistent systems.
This is a continuation of a previous paper by the same authors. In the former paper, it was proved that in order to obtain local uniformization for valuations centered on local domains, it is enough to prove it for rank one valuations. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of valuations centered on rings which are not necessarily integral domains and may even contain nilpotents.
We show how several results about p-adic lattices generalize easily to lattices over valuation ring of arbitrary rank having only the Henselian property for quadratic polynomial. If 2 is invertible we obtain the uniqueness of the Jordan decomposition and the Witt Cancelation Theorem. We show that the isomorphism classes of indecomposable rank 2 lattices over such a ring in which 2 is not invertible are characterized by two invariants, provided that the lattices contain a primitive norm divisible by 2 of maximal valuation.
Let $F$ be a field, and let Zar$(F)$ be the space of valuation rings of $F$ with respect to the Zariski topology. We prove that if $X$ is a quasicompact set of rank one valuation rings in Zar$(F)$ whose maximal ideals do not intersect to $0$, then the intersection of the rings in $X$ is an integral domain with quotient field $F$ such that every finitely generated ideal is a principal ideal. To prove this result, we develop a duality between (a) quasicompact sets of rank one valuation rings whose maximal ideals do not intersect to $0$, and (b) one-dimensional Prüfer domains with nonzero Jacobso…
Classically, Groebner bases are computed by first prescribing a set monomial order. Moss Sweedler suggested an alternative and developed a framework to perform such computations by using valuation rings in place of monomial orders. We build on these ideas by providing a class of valuations on rational function fields of two variables that are suitable for this framework. For these valuations, we explicitly compute the image of an underlying polynomial ring and use this to perform computations concerning ideals in the polynomial ring. Interestingly, for these valuations, some ideals have a fini…
We consider the directed union S of an infinite sequence {(R_n, m_n)} of successive local quadratic transforms of a regular local ring (R, m). If dim R = 2, Abhyankar proves that S is a valuation ring. If dim R > 2, Shannon gives necessary and sufficient conditions for S to be a rank 1 valuation domain and Granja gives necessary and sufficient conditions that S be a rank 2 rational rank 2 valuation domain. Granja observes that these are the only cases where S is a valuation domain. If the sequence is along a rank 1 valuation ring V with valuation v, Granja, Martinez, and Rodriguez show that if…
In this paper we study the rank one discrete valuations of $k((X_1,... ,X_n))$ whose center in $k\lcor\X\rcor$ is the maximal ideal $(\X)$. In sections 2 to 6 we give a construction of a system of parametric equations describing such valuations. This amounts to finding a parameter and a field of coefficients. We devote section 2 to finding an element of value 1, that is, a parameter. The field of coefficients is the residue field of the valuation, and it is given in section 5. The constructions given in these sections are not effective in the general case, because we need either to use the Zor…
Let $v$ be a rank-one discrete valuation of the field $k((\X))$. We know, after \cite{Bri2}, that if $n=2$ then the dimension of $v$ is 1 and if $v$ is the usual order function over $k((\X))$ its dimension is $n-1$. In this paper we prove that, in the general case, the dimension of a rank-one discrete valuation can be any number between 1 and $n-1$.
Let $V$ be a valuation domain of rank one and quotient field $K$. Let $\overline{\hat{K}}$ be a fixed algebraic closure of the $v$-adic completion $\hat K$ of $K$ and let $\overline{\hat{V}}$ be the integral closure of $\hat V$ in $\overline{\hat{K}}$. We describe a relevant class of valuation domains $W$ of the field of rational functions $K(X)$ which lie over $V$, which are indexed by the elements $α\in\overline{\hat{K}}\cup\{\infty\}$, namely, $W=W_α=\{φ\in K(X) \mid φ(α)\in\overline{\hat{V}}\}$. If $V$ is discrete and $π\in V$ is a uniformizer, then a valuation domain $W$ of $K(X)$ is of t…
We consider the question of which semigroups can occur as the semigroup $S_R(ν)$ of positive values of a rank 1 valuation dominating a Noetherian local ring $R$. We give a number of bounds of polynomial type on the growth of $ϕ(n)=S_R(ν)\cap (0,n)$ for $n\in\NN$, starting with the upper bound of $P_R(n)$, where $P_R(n)$ is the Hilbert function of $R$. This bound is generalized to an extremely general bound for arbitrary rank valuations in the paper "Semigroups of valuations on local rings, II", by Cutkosky and Teissier, arXiv:0805.3788. This bound is already enough to give simple examples of r…
We prove that any complete regular local ring with a valuation of rank 1 can be embedded, as a valued ring, in a ring of generalized Puiseux expansions.
Given a valued field $(K,v)$ and a pseudo monotone sequence $E$ in $(K,v)$, one has an induced valuation $v_E$ extending $v$ to $K(X)$. After fixing an extension of $v_E$ to a fixed algebraic closure $\overline{K(X)}$ of $K(X)$, we show that the implicit constant field of the extension $(K(X)|K,v_E)$ is simply the henselization of $(K,v)$. We consider the question: given a value transcendental extension $w$ of $v$ to $K(X)$ and a pseudo monotone sequence $E$ in $(K,v)$, under which precise conditions is $w$ induced by $E$? The dual nature of pseudo convergent sequences of algebraic type and ps…

We work with rational rank 1 valuations centered in regular local rings. Given an algebraic function field $K$ of transcendence degree 3 over $k$, a regular local ring $R$ with $QF(R)=K$ and a $k$-valuation $ν$ of $K$, we provide an algorithm for constructing a generating sequences for $ν$ in $R$. We then develop a method for determining a valuation $ν$ on $k(x,y,z)$ through the sequence of defining values. Using the above results we construct examples of valuations centered in $k[x,y,z]_{(x,y,z)}$ and investigate their semigroups of values.
In this paper, for a valued field $(K, v)$ of arbitrary rank and an extension $w$ of $v$ to $K(X),$ we give a connection between complete sets of ABKPs for $w$ and MacLane-Vaquié chains of $w.$
Suppose that $R$ is a local domain essentially of finite type over a field of characteristic 0, and $ν$ a valuation of the quotient field of $R$ which dominates $R$. The rank of such a valuation often increases upon extending the valuation to a valuation dominating $\hat R$, the completion of $R$. When the rank of $ν$ is 1, Cutkosky and Ghezzi handle this phenomenon by resolving the prime ideal of infinite value, but give an example showing that when the rank is greater than 1, there is no natural ideal in $\hat R$ that leads to this obstruction. We extend their result on the resolution of pri…
The aim of this paper is to introduce a certain number of tools and results suitable for the study of valuations of higher rank on function fields of algebraic varieties. This will be based on a study of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations taking values in the lexicographically ordered group R^k. We prove a duality theorem that gives a geometric realization of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations as tangent cones of dual cone complexes. Using this duality, we provide an analytic description of quasi-monomial valuations as multi-directional derivative operators on tropical functions. We cons…
In this paper we use the theory of multiplier ideals to show that the valuation ideals of a rank one Abhyankar valuation centered at a smooth point of a complex algebraic variety are approximated, in a quite strong sense, by sequences of powers of fixed ideals. Fix a rank one valuation v centered at a smooth point x on an algebraic variety over a field of characteristic zero. Assume that v is Abhyankar, that is, that its rational rank plus its transcendence degree equal the dimension of the variety. Let a_m denote the ideal of elements in the local ring of x whose valuations are at least m. Ou…
In his work of 1969, Merle E. Manis introduced valuations on commutative rings. Recently, the class of totally quasi-ordered rings was developped by the second author. In the present paper, we establish the notion of compatibility between valuations and quasi-orders on rings, leading to a definition of the rank of a quasi-ordered ring. Moreover, we prove a Baer-Krull Theorem for quasi-ordered rings: fixing a Manis valuation v on R, we characterize all v-compatible quasi-orders of R by lifting the quasi-orders from the residue class ring to R itself.
Let $V$ be a valuation domain with quotient field $K$. Given a pseudo-convergent sequence $E$ in $K$, we study two constructions associating to $E$ a valuation domain of $K(X)$ lying over $V$, especially when $V$ has rank one. The first one has been introduced by Ostrowski, the second one more recently by Loper and Werner. We describe the main properties of these valuation domains, and we give a notion of equivalence on the set of pseudo-convergent sequences of $K$ characterizing when the associated valuation domains are equal. Then, we analyze the topological properties of the Zariski-Riemann…
Let v be a rank m discrete valuation of k[[X1,...,Xn]] with dimension n-m. We prove that there exists an inmediate extension L of K where the valuation is monomial. Therefore we compute explicitly the residue field of the valuation.
The notion of key polynomials was first introduced in 1936 by S. Maclane in the case of discrete rank 1 valuations. . Let K -> L be a field extension and ν a valuation of K. The original motivation for introducing key polynomials was the problem of describing all the extensions μ of ν to L. Take a valuation μ of L extending the valuation ν. In the case when ν is discrete of rank 1 and L is a simple algebraic extension of K Maclane introduced the notions of key polynomials for μ and augmented valuations and proved that μ is obtained as a limit of a family of augmented valuations on the polynomi…
Given a finitely generated algebra $A$, it is a fundamental question whether $A$ has a full rank discrete (Krull) valuation $\mathfrak{v}$ with finitely generated value semigroup. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for this, in terms of tropical geometry of $A$. In the course of this we introduce the notion of a Khovanskii basis for $(A, \mathfrak{v})$ which provides a framework for far extending Gröbner theory on polynomial algebras to general finitely generated algebras. In particular, this makes a direct connection between the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies and tropical geometry…
Let $V(I)$ be a polarized projective variety or a subvariety of a product of projective spaces and let $A$ be its (multi-)homogeneous coordinate ring. Given a full-rank valuation $\mathfrak v$ on $A$ we associate weights to the coordinates of the projective space, respectively, the product of projective spaces. Let $w_{\mathfrak v}$ be the vector whose entries are these weights. Our main result is that the value semi-group of $\mathfrak v$ is generated by the images of the generators of $A$ if and only if the initial ideal of $I$ with respect to $w_{\mathfrak v}$ is prime. We further show that…
We present basic properties of Gröbner bases of submodules of a free module of finite rank over a polynomial ring $R$ with coefficients in a graded truncated discrete valuations ring $A$. As an application, we give a criterion for a finitely generated $R$-module to be flat over $A$. Its non-graded version is also given.
This paper deals with valuations of fields of formal meromorphic functions and their residue fields. We explicitly describe the residue fields of the monomial valuations. We also classify all the discrete rank one valuations of fields of power series in two and three variables, according to their residue fields. We prove that all our cases are possible and give explicit constructions.
The main result of this paper is that in order to prove the local uniformization theorem for local rings it is enough to prove it for rank one valuations. Our proof does not depend on the nature of the class of local rings for which we want to prove local uniformization. We prove also the reductions for different versions of the local uniformization theorem.
Let k be a field of characteristic zero, K an algebraic function field over k, and V a k-valuation ring of K. Zariski's theorem of local uniformization shows that there exist algebraic regular local rings R_i with quotient field K which are dominated by V, and such that the direct union of the R_i's is V. We investigate the ring T, which is the direct union of the completions of the R_i's. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for T to be a valuation ring. We then focus on the case in which the valuation has rank one.
Let $R$ be a regular local ring of dimension at least 2. Associated to each valuation domain birationally dominating $R$, there exists a unique sequence $\{R_n\}$ of local quadratic transforms of $R$ along this valuation domain. We consider the situation where the sequence $\{ R_n \}_{n \ge 0}$ is infinite, and examine ideal-theoretic properties of the integrally closed local domain $S = \bigcup_{n \ge 0} R_n$. Among the set of valuation overrings of $R$, there exists a unique limit point $V$ for the sequence of order valuation rings of the $R_n$. We prove the existence of a unique minimal pro…
Given a well-ordered semi-group $Γ$ with a minimal system of generators of ordinal type at most $ωn$ and of rational rank $r$, which satisfies a positivity and increasing condition, we construct a zero-dimensional valuation centered on the ring of polynomials with $r$ variables such that the semi-group of the values of the polynomial ring is equal to $Γ$. The construction uses a generalization of Favre and Jonsson's version of MacLane's sequence of key-polynomials.
We characterize the polynomial closure of a pseudo-convergent sequence in a valuation domain $V$ of arbitrary rank, and then we use this result to show that the polynomial closure is never topological when $V$ has rank at least $2$.
Let (K, v) be a henselian valued field of arbitrary rank. In this paper, we give an irreducibility criterion for multivariate polynomials over K using valuation theory.
In this paper we give a short introduction to the local uniformization problem. This follows a similar line as the one presented by the second author in his talk at ALANT 3. We also discuss our paper on the reduction of local uniformization to the rank one case. In that paper, we prove that in order to obtain local uniformization for valuations centered at objects of a subcategory of the category of noetherian integral domains, it is enough to prove it for rank one valuations centered at objects of the same category. We also announce an extension of this work which was partially developed duri…
Given a perfect valuation ring $R$ of characteristic $p$ that is complete with respect to a rank-$1$ nondiscrete valuation, we show that the ring $\mathbf{A}_{\text{inf}}$ of Witt vectors of $R$ has infinite Krull dimension.
It is proven that each indecomposable injective module over a valuation domain $R$ is polyserial if and only if each maximal immediate extension $\widehat{R}$ of $R$ is of finite rank over the completion $\widetilde{R}$ of $R$ in the $R$-topology. In this case, for each indecomposable injective module $E$, the following invariants are finite and equal: its Malcev rank, its Fleischer rank and its dual Goldie dimension. Similar results are obtained for chain rings satisfying some additional properties. It is also shown that each indecomposable injective module over one Krull-dimensional local No…
Let $V$ be a valuation domain of rank one with quotient field $K$. We study the set of extensions of $V$ to the field of rational functions $K(X)$ induced by pseudo-convergent sequences of $K$ from a topological point of view, endowing this set either with the Zariski or with the constructible topology. In particular, we consider the two subspaces induced by sequences with a prescribed breadth or with a prescribed pseudo-limit. We give some necessary conditions for the Zariski space to be metrizable (under the constructible topology) in terms of the value group and the residue field of $V$.
Suppose that $k$ is an arbitrary field. Consider the field $k((x_1,...,x_n))$, which is the quotient field of the ring $k[[x_1,...,x_n]]$ of formal power series in the variables $x_1,...,x_n$, with coefficients in $k$. Suppose that $σ$ is a formal power series in $x_1,...,x_n$ with coefficints in the algebraic closure of $k$. We give a very simple necessary and sufficient condition for $σ$ to be algebraic over $k((x_1,...,x_n))$. As an application of our methods, we give a characterization of valuation rings $V$ which dominate an excellent, Noetherian local domain $R$ of dimension two, and suc…
Let $V$ be a rank one valuation domain with quotient field $K$. We characterize the subsets $S$ of $V$ for which the ring of integer-valued polynomials ${\rm Int}(S,V)=\{f\in K[X] \mid f(S)\subseteq V\}$ is a Prüfer domain. The characterization is obtained by means of the notion of pseudo-monotone sequence and pseudo-limit in the sense of Chabert, which generalize the classical notions of pseudo-convergent sequence and pseudo-limit by Ostrowski and Kaplansky, respectively. We show that ${\rm Int}(S,V)$ is Prüfer if and only if no element of the algebraic closure $\overline{K}$ of $K$ is a pseu…
Suppose that $R$ is a 2 dimensional excellent local domain with quotient field $K$, $K^*$ is a finite separable extension of $K$ and $S$ is a 2 dimensional local domain with quotient field $K^*$ such that $S$ dominates $R$. Suppose that $ν^*$ is a valuation of $K^*$ such that $ν^*$ dominates $S$. Let $ν$ be the restriction of $ν^*$ to $K$. The associated graded ring ${\rm gr}_ν(R)$ was introduced by Bernard Teissier. It plays an important role in local uniformization. We show that the extension $(K,ν)\rightarrow (K^*,ν^*)$ of valued fields is without defect if and only if there exist regular l…
Given a noetherian local domain $R$ and a valuation $ν$ of its field of fractions which is non negative on $R$, we derive some very general bounds on the growth of the number of distinct valuation ideals of $R$ corresponding to values lying in certain parts of the value group $Γ$ of $ν$. We show that this growth condition imposes restrictions on the semigroups $ν(R\setminus \{0\})$ for noetherian $R$ which are stronger that those resulting from the previous paper \cite{C2} of the first author. Given an ordered embedding $Γ\subset ({\mathbf R}^h)_{\hbox{\rm lex}}$, where $h$ is the rank of $ν$,…
Based on the work of Hahn, Baer, Ostrowski, Krull, Kaplansky and the Artin-Schreier theory, and stimulated by a paper of S. Lang in 1953, the theory of real places and convex valuations has witnessed a remarkable development and has become a basic tool in the theory of ordered fields and real algebraic geometry. In this paper, we take a further step by adding an exponential function to the ordered field.
We give a proof of local strong factorization of a birational extension of regular local rings (of equicharacteristic zero) along a valuation of rank 1 and maximal rational rank. This gives an alternate proof to the geometric proof of this Theorem by Karu. Our proof uses only linear algebra, and is in the spirit of Christensen's proof of this result in dimension 3.
Let ${\mathcal O}$ be a discrete valuation ring with quotient field ${\cal K}$. The affine Grassmannian ${\cal G}r$ is the set of full-rank ${\mathcal O}$-modules contained in ${\cal K}^n$. Given $Λ\in {\cal G}r$, invariant factors $inv(Λ)=λ\in {\mathbb Z}^n$ stratify ${\cal G}r$. Left-multiplication by $GL_{n}({\cal K})$ stratifies ${\cal G}r \times {\cal G}r$ where $inv(N,Λ) = μ$ if $(N,Λ)$ and $(I_{n} ,M)$ are in the same $GL_{n}({\cal K})$ orbit, and $inv(M) = μ$. We present an elementary map from ${\cal G}r \times {\cal G}r$ to hives (in the sense of Knutson and Tao) of type $(μ,ν,λ)$ whe…
