In this paper we consider the state complexity of an operation on formal languages, root(L). This naturally entails the discussion of the monoid of transformations of a finite set. We obtain good upper and lower bounds on the state complexity of root(L) over alphabets of all sizes.
The aim of this paper is to develop a theory of finite transformation monoids and in particular to study primitive transformation monoids. We introduce the notion of orbitals and orbital digraphs for transformation monoids and prove a monoid version of D. Higman's celebrated theorem characterizing primitivity in terms of connectedness of orbital digraphs. A thorough study of the module (or representation) associated to a transformation monoid is initiated. In particular, we compute the projective cover of the transformation module over a field of characteristic zero in the case of a transitive…
We classify the $\mathscr{R}$-cross-sections of the monoid of order-preserving transformations on the $n$-element chain in terms of certain binary trees.
For finite permutation groups, simplicity of the augmentation submodule is equivalent to $2$-transitivity over the field of complex numbers. We note that this is not the case for transformation monoids. We characterize the finite transformation monoids whose augmentation submodules are simple for a field $\mathbb{F}$ (assuming the answer is known for groups, which is the case for $\mathbb C$, $\mathbb R$, and $\mathbb Q$) and provide many interesting and natural examples such as endomorphism monoids of connected simplicial complexes, posets, and graphs (the latter with simplicial mappings).
We show that the monoid of all injective and extensive partial transformations of a chain with three elements admits no finite basis of its identities. This completes solving of the finite basis problem for the monoids in the basic frame of partial transformation monoids posed by Volkov.
The objective of this paper is to study the monoid of all partial transformations of a finite set that preserve a uniform partition. In addition to proving that this monoid is a quotient of a wreath product with respect to a congruence relation, we show that it is generated by 5 generators, we compute its order and determine a presentation on a minimal generating set.
Malcev described the congruences of the monoid $T_n$ of all full transformations on a finite set $X_n=\{1, \dots,n\}$. Since then, congruences have been characterized in various other monoids of (partial) transformations on $X_n$, such as the symmetric inverse monoid $In_n$ of all injective partial transformations, or the monoid $PT_n$ of all partial transformations. The first aim of this paper is to describe the congruences of the direct products $Q_m\times P_n$, where $Q$ and $P$ belong to $\{T, PT,In\}$. Malcev also provided a similar description of the congruences on the multiplicative mon…
We describe and count the maximal subsemigroups of many well-known monoids of transformations and monoids of partitions. More precisely, we find the maximal subsemigroups of the full spectrum of monoids of order- or orientation-preserving transformations and partial permutations considered by V. H. Fernandes and co-authors (12 monoids in total); the partition, Brauer, Jones, and Motzkin monoids; and certain further monoids. Although descriptions of the maximal subsemigroups of some of the aforementioned classes of monoids appear in the literature, we present a unified framework for determining…
Recently, Gray and Ruskuc (arXiv:1101.1833) proved that if e is a rank k idempotent transformation of the set {1,...,n} to itself and k<=n-2, then the maximal subgroup of the free idempotent generated semigroup over the full transformation monoid T_n containing e is isomorphic to the symmetric group S_k. We prove that the same holds when T_n is replaced by PT_n, the full monoid of partial transformations on {1,...,n}.
Let $X$ be an arbitrary set and let $T(X)$ denote the full transformation monoid on $X$. We prove that an element of $T(X)$ is unit-regular if and only if it is semi-balanced. For infinite $X$, we discuss regularity of the submonoid of $T(X)$ consisting of all injective (resp. surjective) transformations. For a partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $X$, we characterize unit-regular elements in the monoid $T(X, \mathcal{P})$, under composition, defined as \[T(X, \mathcal{P}) = \{f\in T(X)\mid (\forall X_i \in \mathcal{P}) (\exists X_j \in \mathcal{P})\; X_i f \subseteq X_j\}.\] We also characterize (unit-…
We study the P versus NP problem through properties of functions and monoids, continuing the work of [3]. Here we consider inverse monoids whose properties and relationships determine whether P is different from NP, or whether injective one-way functions (with respect to worst-case complexity) exist.
Let T_n be the full transformation semigroup of all mappings from the set {1,...,n} to itself under composition. Let E = E(T_n) denote the set of idempotents of T_n and let e be an arbitrary idempotent satisfying |im(e)|=r < n-1. We prove that the maximal subgroup of the free idempotent generated semigroup over E containing e is isomorphic to the symmetric group S_r.
If $f : \tildeΓ \rightarrow Γ$ is a covering map between connected graphs, and $H$ is the subgroup of $π_1(Γ,v)$ used to construct the cover, then it is well known that the group of deck transformations of the cover is isomorphic to $ N(H)/H$, where $N(H)$ is the normalizer of $H$ in $π_1(Γ,v)$. We show that an entirely analogous result holds for immersions between connected graphs, where the subgroup $H$ is replaced by the closed inverse submonoid of the inverse monoid $L(Γ,v)$ used to construct the immersion. We observe a relationship between group actions on graphs and deck transformations …
In this paper we describe a portion of the subsemigroup lattice of the \emph{full transformation semigroup} $Ω^Ω$, which consists of all mappings on the countable infinite set $Ω$. Gavrilov showed that there are five maximal subsemigroups of $Ω^Ω$ containing the symmetric group $\sym(Ω)$. The portion of the subsemigroup lattice of $Ω^Ω$ which we describe is that between the intersection of these five maximal subsemigroups and $Ω^Ω$. We prove that there are only 38 subsemigroups in this interval, in contrast to the $2^{2^{\aleph_0}}$ subsemigroups between $\sym(Ω)$ and $Ω^Ω$.
We investigate semigroup topologies on the full transformation monoid T(X) of an infinite set X. We show that the standard pointwise topology is the weakest Hausdorff semigroup topology on T(X), show that the pointwise topology is the unique Hausdorff semigroup topology on T(X) that induces the pointwise topology on the group of all permutations of X, and construct |X| distinct Hausdorff semigroup topologies on T(X). In the case where X is countable, we prove that the pointwise topology is the only Polish semigroup topology on T(X). We also show that every separable semigroup topology on T(X) …
The left patience sorting (lPS) monoid, also known in the literature as the Bell monoid, and the right patient sorting (rPS) monoid are introduced by defining certain congruences on words. Such congruences are constructed using insertion algorithms based on the concept of decreasing subsequences. Presentations for these monoids are given. Each finite-rank rPS monoid is shown to have polynomial growth and to satisfy a non-trivial identity (dependent on its rank), while the infinite rank rPS monoid does not satisfy a non-trivial identity. The lPS monoids of finite rank have exponential growth an…

The Thompson-Higman groups G_{k,i} have a natural generalization to monoids M_{k,i}, and inverse monoids Inv_{k,i}. We study some structural features of M_{k,i} and Inv_{k,i} and investigate the computational complexity of decision problems. The main interest of these monoids is their close connection with circuits and circuit complexity. The maximal subgroups of M_{k,1} are isomorphic to the groups G_{k,j} (1 \leq j \leq k-1); so we rediscover all the Thompson-Higman groups within M_{k,1}. The Green relations \leq_J and \equiv_D of M_{k,1} can be decided in deterministic polynomial time when …
The rank of a semigroup is the cardinality of a smallest generating set. In this paper we compute the rank of the endomorphism monoid of a non-trivial uniform partition of a finite set, that is, the semigroup of those transformations of a finite set that leave a non-trivial uniform partition invariant. That involves proving that the rank of a wreath product of two symmetric groups is two and then use the fact that the endomorphism monoid of a partition is isomorphic to a wreath product of two full transformation semigroups. The calculation of the rank of these semigroups solves an open questio…
The representation theory of the symmetric group has been intensively studied for over 100 years and is one of the gems of modern mathematics. The full transformation monoid $\mathfrak T_n$ (the monoid of all self-maps of an $n$-element set) is the monoid analogue of the symmetric group. The investigation of its representation theory was begun by Hewitt and Zuckerman in 1957. Its character table was computed by Putcha in 1996 and its representation type was determined in a series of papers by Ponizovski{\uı}, Putcha and Ringel between 1987 and 2000. From their work, one can deduce that the glo…
With each semigroup one can associate a partial algebra, called the biordered set, which captures important algebraic and geometric features of the structure of idempotents of that semigroup. For a biordered set $\mathcal{E}$, one can construct the free idempotent-generated semigroup over $\mathcal{E}$, $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$, which is the free-est semigroup (in a definite categorical sense) whose biorder of idempotents is isomorphic to $\mathcal{E}$. Studies of these intriguing objects have been recently focusing on their particular aspects, such as maximal subgroups, the word problem, et…
We study the monoid generalization M_{k,1} of the Thompson-Higman groups, and we characterize the R- and the L-preorder of M_{k,1}. Although M_{k,1} has only one non-zero J-class and k-1 non-zero D-classes, the R- and the L-preorder are complicated; in particular, <_R is dense (even within an L-class), and <_L is dense (even within an R-class). We study the computational complexity of the R- and the L-preorder. When inputs are given by words over a finite generating set of M_{k,1}, the R- and the L-preorder decision problems are in P. The main result of the paper is that over a "circuit-like" …
In this survey we show how well known results about the Word Problem for finite group presentations can be generalized to the Word Problem and other decision problems for non-necessarily finite monoid and group presentations. This is done by introducing functions playing the same role of the Dehn function for the given decision problem and by finding the Tietze transformations that leave this function invariant. This survey presents some original ideas and points of view.
Several elementary properties of the symmetric group $S_n$ extend in a nice way to the full transformation monoid $M_n$ of all maps of the set $X:=\{1,2,3,\dots,n\}$ into itself. The group $S_n$ turns out to be in some sense the torsion part of the monoid $M_n$. More precisely, there is a pretorsion theory in the category of all maps $f\colon X\to X$, $X$ an arbitrary finite non-empty set, in which bijections are exactly the torsion objects.
We investigate the monoid of transformations that are induced by sequences of writing to and reading from a queue storage. We describe this monoid by means of a confluent and terminating semi-Thue system and study some of its basic algebraic properties, e.g., conjugacy. Moreover, we show that while several properties concerning its rational subsets are undecidable, their uniform membership problem is NL-complete. Furthermore, we present an algebraic characterization of this monoid's recognizable subsets. Finally, we prove that it is not Thurston-automatic.
An algebra $\A$ is said to be an independence algebra if it is a matroid algebra and every map $\al:X\to A$, defined on a basis $X$ of $\A$, can be extended to an endomorphism of $\A$. These algebras are particularly well behaved generalizations of vector spaces, and hence they naturally appear in several branches of mathematics such as model theory, group theory, and semigroup theory. It is well known that matroid algebras have a well defined notion of dimension. Let $\A$ be any independence algebra of finite dimension $n$, with at least two elements. Denote by $\End(\A)$ the monoid of endomo…
For any non-erasing free monoid morphism $σ: \cal A^* \to \cal B^*$, and for any subshift $X \subset \cal A^\Z$ and its image subshift $Y = σ(X) \subset \cal B^\Z$, the associated complexity functions $p_X$ and $p_Y$ are shown to satisfy: there exist constants $c, d, C > 0$ such that $$c \cdot p_X(d \cdot n) \,\, \leq \,\, p_Y(n) \,\, \leq \,\, C \cdot p_X(n)$$ holds for all sufficiently large integers $n \in \N$, provided that $σ$ is recognizable in $X$. If $σ$ is in addition letter-to-letter, then $p_Y$ belongs to $Θ(p_X)$ (and conversely). Otherwise, however, there are examples where $p_X$ …
We give a solution to the word problem for the singular braid monoid SB_n. The complexity of the algorithm is quadratic in the product of the word length and the number of the singular generators in the word. Furthermore we algebraically reprove a result of Fenn, Keyman and Rourke that the monoid embeds into a group and we compute the cohomological dimension of this group.
We study maximal subsemigroups of the monoid T(X) of all full transformations on the set X=N of natural numbers containing a given subsemigroup W of T(X) where each element of a given set $U$ is a generator of T(X) modulo W. This note continue the study of maximal subsemigroups on the monoid of all full transformations on a infinite set.
This paper continues the functional approach to the P-versus-NP problem, begun in [1]. Here we focus on the monoid RM_2^P of right-ideal morphisms of the free monoid, that have polynomial input balance and polynomial time-complexity. We construct a machine model for the functions in RM_2^P, and evaluation functions. We prove that RM_2^P is not finitely generated, and use this to show separation results for time-complexity.
For a group $G$ acting on a set $X$, let $\text{End}_G(X)$ be the monoid of all $G$-equivariant transformations, or $G$-endomorphisms, of $X$, and let $\text{Aut}_G(X)$ be its group of units. After discussing few basic results in a general setting, we focus on the case when $G$ and $X$ are both finite in order to determine the smallest cardinality of a set $W \subseteq \text{End}_G(X)$ such that $W \cup \text{Aut}_G(X)$ generates $\text{End}_G(X)$; this is known in semigroup theory as the relative rank of $\text{End}_G(X)$ modulo $\text{Aut}_G(X)$.
The `colored Cube Dance' is an extension of Douthett's and Steinbach's Cube Dance graph, related to a monoid of binary relations defined on the set of major, minor, and augmented triads. This contribution explores the automorphism group of this monoid action, as a way to transform chord progressions. We show that this automorphism group is of order 7776 and is isomorphic to $({\mathbb{Z}_3}^4 \rtimes D_8) \rtimes (D_6 \times \mathbb{Z}_2)$. The size and complexity of this group makes it unwieldy: we therefore provide an interactive tool via a web interface based on common HTML/Javascript frame…
The (ordinary) quiver of an algebra $A$ is a graph that contains information about the algebra's representations. We give a description of the quiver of $\mathbb{C}PT_{n}$, the algebra of the monoid of all partial functions on $n$ elements. Our description uses an isomorphism between $\mathbb{C}PT_{n}$ and the algebra of the epimorphism category, $E_{n}$, whose objects are the subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$ and morphism are all total epimorphisms. This is an extension of a well known isomorphism of the algebra of $IS_{n}$ (the monoid of all partial injective maps on $n$ elements) and the algebra…
Denote by $\mathcal T_n$ and $\mathcal S_n$ the full transformation semigroup and the symmetric group on the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$, and $\mathcal E_n=\{1\}\cup(\mathcal T_n\setminus \mathcal S_n)$. Let $\mathcal T(X,\mathcal P)$ denote the set of all transformations of the finite set $X$ preserving a uniform partition $\mathcal P$ of $X$ into $m$ subsets of size $n$, where $m,n\geq2$. We enumerate the idempotents of $\mathcal T(X,\mathcal P)$, and describe the subsemigroup $S=\langle E\rangle$ generated by the idempotents $E=E(\mathcal T(X,\mathcal P))$. We show that $S=S_1\cup S_2$, where $S_1…
For an element a in a semigroup S the local subsemigroup of S with respect to a is the subsemigroup aSa of S and the variant of S with respect to a is a semigroup with underlying set S with a sandwich operation xy = xay for all x, y in S. In this paper we discuss the structures of local subsemigroups of full transformation semigroups and symmetric inverse monoids. It is also shown that the set of all local subsemigroups of finite symmetric inverse monoids and the set of all variants of all finite symmetric inverse monoids are same upto isomorphism.
In this paper we study the semigroup $I_\infty^\dnearrow(N)$ of partial co-finite almost monotone bijective transformations of the set of positive integers $\mathbb{N}$. We show that the semigroup $I_\infty^\dnearrow(N)$ has algebraic properties similar to the bicyclic semigroup: it is bisimple and all of its non-trivial group homomorphisms are either isomorphisms or group homomorphisms. Also we prove that every Baire topology $τ$ on $I_\infty^\dnearrow(N)$ such that $(I_\infty^\dnearrow(N),τ)$ is a semitopological semigroup is discrete, describe the closure of $(I_\infty^\dnearrow(N),τ)$ in a…
Adams operations are the natural transformations of the representation ring functor on the category of finite groups, and they are one way to describe the usual lambda-ring structure on these rings. From the representation-theoretical point of view, they codify some of the symmetric monoidal structure of the representation category. We show that the monoidal structure on the category alone, regardless of the particular symmetry, determines all the odd Adams operations. On the other hand, we give examples to show that monoidal equivalences do not have to preserve the second Adams operations and…
