We investigate semigroup topologies on the full transformation monoid T(X) of an infinite set X. We show that the standard pointwise topology is the weakest Hausdorff semigroup topology on T(X), show that the pointwise topology is the unique Hausdorff semigroup topology on T(X) that induces the pointwise topology on the group of all permutations of X, and construct |X| distinct Hausdorff semigroup topologies on T(X). In the case where X is countable, we prove that the pointwise topology is the only Polish semigroup topology on T(X). We also show that every separable semigroup topology on T(X) is perfect, describe the compact sets in an arbitrary Hausdorff semigroup topology on T(X), and show that there are no locally compact perfect Hausdorff semigroup topologies on T(X) when |X| has uncountable cofinality.
We classify the $\mathscr{R}$-cross-sections of the monoid of order-preserving transformations on the $n$-element chain in terms of certain binary trees.
We show that the monoid of all injective and extensive partial transformations of a chain with three elements admits no finite basis of its identities. This completes solving of the finite basis problem for the monoids in the basic frame of partial transformation monoids posed by Volkov.
The objective of this paper is to study the monoid of all partial transformations of a finite set that preserve a uniform partition. In addition to proving that this monoid is a quotient of a wreath product with respect to a congruence relation, we show that it is generated by 5 generators, we compute its order and determine a presentation on a minimal generating set.
Malcev described the congruences of the monoid $T_n$ of all full transformations on a finite set $X_n=\{1, \dots,n\}$. Since then, congruences have been characterized in various other monoids of (partial) transformations on $X_n$, such as the symmetric inverse monoid $In_n$ of all injective partial transformations, or the monoid $PT_n$ of all partial transformations. The first aim of this paper is to describe the congruences of the direct products $Q_m\times P_n$, where $Q$ and $P$ belong to $\{T, PT,In\}$. Malcev also provided a similar description of the congruences on the multiplicative mon…
We describe and count the maximal subsemigroups of many well-known monoids of transformations and monoids of partitions. More precisely, we find the maximal subsemigroups of the full spectrum of monoids of order- or orientation-preserving transformations and partial permutations considered by V. H. Fernandes and co-authors (12 monoids in total); the partition, Brauer, Jones, and Motzkin monoids; and certain further monoids. Although descriptions of the maximal subsemigroups of some of the aforementioned classes of monoids appear in the literature, we present a unified framework for determining…
Recently, Gray and Ruskuc (arXiv:1101.1833) proved that if e is a rank k idempotent transformation of the set {1,...,n} to itself and k<=n-2, then the maximal subgroup of the free idempotent generated semigroup over the full transformation monoid T_n containing e is isomorphic to the symmetric group S_k. We prove that the same holds when T_n is replaced by PT_n, the full monoid of partial transformations on {1,...,n}.
Let $X$ be an arbitrary set and let $T(X)$ denote the full transformation monoid on $X$. We prove that an element of $T(X)$ is unit-regular if and only if it is semi-balanced. For infinite $X$, we discuss regularity of the submonoid of $T(X)$ consisting of all injective (resp. surjective) transformations. For a partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $X$, we characterize unit-regular elements in the monoid $T(X, \mathcal{P})$, under composition, defined as \[T(X, \mathcal{P}) = \{f\in T(X)\mid (\forall X_i \in \mathcal{P}) (\exists X_j \in \mathcal{P})\; X_i f \subseteq X_j\}.\] We also characterize (unit-…
In the paper we investigate topological properties of a topological Brandt $λ^0$-extension $B^0_λ(S)$ of a semitopological monoid $S$ with zero. In particular we prove that for every Tychonoff pseudocompact (resp., Hausdorff countably compact, Hausdorff compact) semitopological monoid $S$ with zero there exists a unique semiregular pseudocompact (resp., Hausdorff countably compact, Hausdorff compact) extension $B^0_λ(S)$ of $S$ and establish theirs Stone-Čech and Bohr compactifications. We also describe a category whose objects are ingredients in the constructions of pseudocompact (resp., coun…
Let T_n be the full transformation semigroup of all mappings from the set {1,...,n} to itself under composition. Let E = E(T_n) denote the set of idempotents of T_n and let e be an arbitrary idempotent satisfying |im(e)|=r < n-1. We prove that the maximal subgroup of the free idempotent generated semigroup over E containing e is isomorphic to the symmetric group S_r.
If $f : \tildeΓ \rightarrow Γ$ is a covering map between connected graphs, and $H$ is the subgroup of $π_1(Γ,v)$ used to construct the cover, then it is well known that the group of deck transformations of the cover is isomorphic to $ N(H)/H$, where $N(H)$ is the normalizer of $H$ in $π_1(Γ,v)$. We show that an entirely analogous result holds for immersions between connected graphs, where the subgroup $H$ is replaced by the closed inverse submonoid of the inverse monoid $L(Γ,v)$ used to construct the immersion. We observe a relationship between group actions on graphs and deck transformations …
In this paper we describe a portion of the subsemigroup lattice of the \emph{full transformation semigroup} $Ω^Ω$, which consists of all mappings on the countable infinite set $Ω$. Gavrilov showed that there are five maximal subsemigroups of $Ω^Ω$ containing the symmetric group $\sym(Ω)$. The portion of the subsemigroup lattice of $Ω^Ω$ which we describe is that between the intersection of these five maximal subsemigroups and $Ω^Ω$. We prove that there are only 38 subsemigroups in this interval, in contrast to the $2^{2^{\aleph_0}}$ subsemigroups between $\sym(Ω)$ and $Ω^Ω$.
The aim of this paper is to develop a theory of finite transformation monoids and in particular to study primitive transformation monoids. We introduce the notion of orbitals and orbital digraphs for transformation monoids and prove a monoid version of D. Higman's celebrated theorem characterizing primitivity in terms of connectedness of orbital digraphs. A thorough study of the module (or representation) associated to a transformation monoid is initiated. In particular, we compute the projective cover of the transformation module over a field of characteristic zero in the case of a transitive…
We give sufficient conditions when a topological inverse $λ$-polycyclic monoid $P_λ$ is absolutely $H$-closed in the class of topological inverse semigroups. Also, for every infinite cardinal $λ$ we construct the coarsest semigroup inverse topology $τ_{mi}$ on $P_λ$ and give an example of a topological inverse monoid S which contains the polycyclic monoid $P_2$ as a dense discrete subsemigroup.
We study algebraic properties of the Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of monoids with zero and non-trivial homomorphisms between the Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of monoids with zero. We introduce finite, compact topological Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of topological semigroups and countably compact topological Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of topological inverse semigroups in the class of topological inverse semigroups and establish the structure of such extensions and non-trivial continuous homomorphisms between such topological Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of topological monoids with zero. We also describe a category w…
In this paper we consider the state complexity of an operation on formal languages, root(L). This naturally entails the discussion of the monoid of transformations of a finite set. We obtain good upper and lower bounds on the state complexity of root(L) over alphabets of all sizes.
For a topological monoid S the dual inverse monoid is the topological monoid of all identity preserving homomorphisms from S to the circle with attached zero. A topological monoid S is defined to be reflexive if the canonical homomorphism from S to its second dual inverse monoid is a topological isomorphism. We prove that a (compact or discrete) topological inverse monoid S is reflexive (if and) only if S is abelian and the idempotent semilattice of S is zero-dimensional. For a discrete (resp. compact) topological monoid its dual inverse monoid is compact (resp. discrete). These results unify …
For finite permutation groups, simplicity of the augmentation submodule is equivalent to $2$-transitivity over the field of complex numbers. We note that this is not the case for transformation monoids. We characterize the finite transformation monoids whose augmentation submodules are simple for a field $\mathbb{F}$ (assuming the answer is known for groups, which is the case for $\mathbb C$, $\mathbb R$, and $\mathbb Q$) and provide many interesting and natural examples such as endomorphism monoids of connected simplicial complexes, posets, and graphs (the latter with simplicial mappings).
In this paper we discuss algebraic, combinatorial and topological properties of singular virtual braids. On the algebraic side we state the relations between classical and virtual singular objects, in addition we discuss a Birman-like conjecture for the virtual case. On the topological and combinatorial side, we prove that there is a bijection between singular abstract braids, horizontal Gauss diagrams and singular virtual braids, in particular using horizontal Gauss diagrams we obtain a presentation of the singular pure virtual braid monoid.
With each semigroup one can associate a partial algebra, called the biordered set, which captures important algebraic and geometric features of the structure of idempotents of that semigroup. For a biordered set $\mathcal{E}$, one can construct the free idempotent-generated semigroup over $\mathcal{E}$, $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$, which is the free-est semigroup (in a definite categorical sense) whose biorder of idempotents is isomorphic to $\mathcal{E}$. Studies of these intriguing objects have been recently focusing on their particular aspects, such as maximal subgroups, the word problem, et…
In the paper we introduce topological $\mathbb{Z}$-Bruck-Reilly and topological $\mathbb{Z}$-Bruck extensions of (semi)topological monoids which are generalizations of topological Bruck-Reilly and topological Bruck extensions of (semi)topological monoids and study their topologizations. The sufficient conditions under which the topological $\mathbb{Z}$-Bruck-Reilly ($\mathbb{Z}$-Bruck) extension admits only the direct sum topology and conditions under which the direct sum topology can be coarsened are given. Also, topological characterizations of some classes of $I$-bisimple (semi)topological …
We show that a topological semigroup of finite partial bijections $\mathscr{I}_λ^n$ of an infinite set with a compact subsemigroup of idempotents is absolutely $H$-closed and any countably compact topological semigroup does not contain $\mathscr{I}_λ^n$ as a subsemigroup. We give sufficient conditions onto a topological semigroup $\mathscr{I}_λ^1$ to be non-$H$-closed. Also we describe the structure of countably compact Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of topological monoids and study the category of countably compact Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of topological monoids with zero.

Combining the definition of 0-Hecke monoids with that of Kiselman semigroups, we define what we call Kiselman quotients of 0-Hecke monoids associated with simply laced Dynkin diagrams. We classify these monoids up to isomorphism, determine their idempotents and show that they are $\mathcal{J}$-trivial. For type $A$ we show that Catalan numbers appear as the maximal cardinality of our monoids, in which case the corresponding monoid is isomorphic to the monoid of all order-preserving and order-decreasing total transformations on a finite chain. We construct various representations of these monoi…
We develop some new topological tools to study maximal subgroups of free idempotent generated semigroups. As an application, we show that the rank 1 component of the free idempotent generated semigroup of the biordered set of a full matrix monoid of n x n matrices, n>2$ over a division ring Q has maximal subgroup isomorphic to the multiplicative subgroup of Q.
We study algebraic structure of the $λ$-polycyclic monoid $P_λ$ and its topologizations. We show that the $λ$-polycyclic monoid for an infinite cardinal $λ\geqslant 2$ has similar algebraic properties so has the polycyclic monoid $P_n$ with finitely many $n\geqslant 2$ generators. In particular we prove that for every infinite cardinal $λ$ the polycyclic monoid $P_λ$ is a congruence-free combinatorial $0$-bisimple $0$-$E$-unitary inverse semigroup. Also we show that every non-zero element $x$ is an isolated point in $(P_λ,τ)$ for every Hausdorff topology $τ$ on $P_λ$, such that $(P_λ,τ)$ is a …
In this paper we study the semigroup $\mathscr{I}_{\infty}^{\nearrow}(\mathbb{N})$ of partial cofinal monotone bijective transformations of the set of positive integers $\mathbb{N}$. We show that the semigroup $\mathscr{I}_{\infty}^{\nearrow}(\mathbb{N})$ has algebraic properties similar to the bicyclic semigroup: it is bisimple and all of its non-trivial group homomorphisms are either isomorphisms or group homomorphisms. We also prove that every locally compact topology $τ$ on $\mathscr{I}_{\infty}^{\nearrow}(\mathbb{N})$ such that $(\mathscr{I}_{\infty}^{\nearrow}(\mathbb{N}),τ)$ is a topolo…
The rank of a semigroup is the cardinality of a smallest generating set. In this paper we compute the rank of the endomorphism monoid of a non-trivial uniform partition of a finite set, that is, the semigroup of those transformations of a finite set that leave a non-trivial uniform partition invariant. That involves proving that the rank of a wreath product of two symmetric groups is two and then use the fact that the endomorphism monoid of a partition is isomorphic to a wreath product of two full transformation semigroups. The calculation of the rank of these semigroups solves an open questio…
We initiate the study of higher dimensional topological finiteness properties of monoids. This is done by developing the theory of monoids acting on CW complexes. For this we establish the foundations of $M$-equivariant homotopy theory where $M$ is a discrete monoid. For projective $M$-CW complexes we prove several fundamental results such as the homotopy extension and lifting property, which we use to prove the $M$-equivariant Whitehead theorems. We define a left equivariant classifying space as a contractible projective $M$-CW complex. We prove that such a space is unique up to $M$-homotopy …
We calculate the rank and idempotent rank of the semigroup $E(X,P)$ generated by the idempotents of the semigroup $T(X,P)$, which consists of all transformations of the finite set $X$ preserving a non-uniform partition $P$. We also classify and enumerate the idempotent generating sets of this minimal possible size. This extends results of the first two authors in the uniform case.
In this paper we study the semigroup $I_\infty^\dnearrow(N)$ of partial co-finite almost monotone bijective transformations of the set of positive integers $\mathbb{N}$. We show that the semigroup $I_\infty^\dnearrow(N)$ has algebraic properties similar to the bicyclic semigroup: it is bisimple and all of its non-trivial group homomorphisms are either isomorphisms or group homomorphisms. Also we prove that every Baire topology $τ$ on $I_\infty^\dnearrow(N)$ such that $(I_\infty^\dnearrow(N),τ)$ is a semitopological semigroup is discrete, describe the closure of $(I_\infty^\dnearrow(N),τ)$ in a…
In the paper we study the preservation of pseudocompactness (resp., countable compactness, sequential compactness, $ω$-boundedness, totally countable compactness, countable pracompactness, sequential pseudocompactness) by Tychonoff products of pseudocompact (and countably compact) to\-pological Brandt $λ_i^0$-extensions of semitopological monoids with zero. In particular we show that if $\big\{ \big(B^0_{λ_i}(S_i),τ^0_{B(S_i)}\big) \colon i\in\mathscr{I}\big\}$ is a family of Hausdorff pseudocompact to\-pological Brandt $λ_i^0$-extensions of pseudocompact semitopological monoids with zero such…
For any non-erasing free monoid morphism $σ: \cal A^* \to \cal B^*$, and for any subshift $X \subset \cal A^\Z$ and its image subshift $Y = σ(X) \subset \cal B^\Z$, the associated complexity functions $p_X$ and $p_Y$ are shown to satisfy: there exist constants $c, d, C > 0$ such that $$c \cdot p_X(d \cdot n) \,\, \leq \,\, p_Y(n) \,\, \leq \,\, C \cdot p_X(n)$$ holds for all sufficiently large integers $n \in \N$, provided that $σ$ is recognizable in $X$. If $σ$ is in addition letter-to-letter, then $p_Y$ belongs to $Θ(p_X)$ (and conversely). Otherwise, however, there are examples where $p_X$ …
In the paper we study algebraic properties of the monoid $\mathbf{I}\mathbb{N}_{\infty}^{\boldsymbol{g}[j]}$ of cofinite partial isometries of the set of positive integers $\mathbb{N}$ with the bounded finite noise $j$. For the monoids $\mathbf{I}\mathbb{N}_{\infty}^{\boldsymbol{g}[j]}$ we prove counterparts of some classical results of Eberhart and Selden describing the closure of the bicyclic semigroup in a locally compact topological inverse semigroup. In particular we show that for any positive integer $j$ every Hausdorff shift-continuous topology $τ$ on $\mathbf{I}\mathbb{N}_{\infty}^{\bo…
The representation theory of the symmetric group has been intensively studied for over 100 years and is one of the gems of modern mathematics. The full transformation monoid $\mathfrak T_n$ (the monoid of all self-maps of an $n$-element set) is the monoid analogue of the symmetric group. The investigation of its representation theory was begun by Hewitt and Zuckerman in 1957. Its character table was computed by Putcha in 1996 and its representation type was determined in a series of papers by Ponizovski{\uı}, Putcha and Ringel between 1987 and 2000. From their work, one can deduce that the glo…
We investigate the monoid of transformations that are induced by sequences of writing to and reading from a queue storage. We describe this monoid by means of a confluent and terminating semi-Thue system and study some of its basic algebraic properties, e.g., conjugacy. Moreover, we show that while several properties concerning its rational subsets are undecidable, their uniform membership problem is NL-complete. Furthermore, we present an algebraic characterization of this monoid's recognizable subsets. Finally, we prove that it is not Thurston-automatic.
In this paper we study the semigroup $\mathscr{I}^{\infty}_λ$ of injective partial selfmaps almost everywhere the identity of a set of infinite cardinality $λ$. We describe the Green relations on $\mathscr{I}^{\infty}_λ$, all (two-sided) ideals and all congruences of the semigroup $\mathscr{I}^{\infty}_λ$. We prove that every Hausdorff hereditary Baire topology $τ$ on $\mathscr{I}^{\infty}_ω$ such that $(\mathscr{I}^{\infty}_ω,τ)$ is a semitopological semigroup is discrete and describe the closure of the discrete semigroup $\mathscr{I}^{\infty}_λ$ in a topological semigroup. Also we show that …
We give a topological proof that a free inverse monoid on one or more generators is neither of type left-$FP_2$ nor right-$FP_2$. This strengthens a classical result of Schein that such monoids are not finitely presented as monoids.
We define compact automata and show that every language has a unique minimal compact automaton. We also define recognition of languages by compact left semitopological monoids and construct the analogue of the syntactic monoid in this context. For rational languages this reduces to the usual theory of finite automata and finite monoids.
We study maximal subsemigroups of the monoid T(X) of all full transformations on the set X=N of natural numbers containing a given subsemigroup W of T(X) where each element of a given set $U$ is a generator of T(X) modulo W. This note continue the study of maximal subsemigroups on the monoid of all full transformations on a infinite set.
We study groupoids and semigroup C*-algebras arising from graphs of monoids, in the setting of right LCM monoids. First, we establish a general criterion when a graph of monoids gives rise to a submonoid of the fundamental group which is right LCM. Moreover, we carry out a detailed analysis of structural properties of semigroup C*-algebras arising from graphs of monoids, including closed invariant subspaces and topological freeness of the groupoids as well as ideal structure, nuclearity and K-theory of the semigroup C*-algebras. As an application, we construct families of pairwise non-conjugat…
