A geometric approach to Voiculescu-Brown entropy

A basic problem in dynamics is to identify systems with positive entropy, i.e., systems which are "chaotic." While there is a vast collection of results addressing this issue in topological dynamics, the phenomenon of positive entropy remains by and large a mystery within the broader noncommutative domain of C*-algebraic dynamics. To shed some light on the noncommutative situation we propose a geometric perspective inspired by work of Glasner and Weiss on topological entropy. This is a written version of the author's talk at the Winter 2002 Meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society in Ottawa, Ontario.

Positive Voiculescu-Brown entropy in noncommutative toral automorphisms

We show that the Voiculescu-Brown entropy of a noncommutative toral automorphism arising from a matrix S in GL(d,Z) is at least half the value of the topological entropy of the corresponding classical toral automorphism. We also obtain some information concerning the positivity of local Voiculescu-Brown entropy with respect to single unitaries. Inequality for Voiculescu's free entropy in terms of Brown measure

We study Voiculescu's microstate free entropy for a single non-selfadjoint random variable. The main result is that certain additional constraints on eigenvalues of microstates do not change the free entropy. Our tool is the method of random regularization of Brown measure which was studied recently by Haagerup and the author. As a simple application we present an upper bound for the free entropy of a single non--selfadjoint operator in terms of its Brown measure and the second moment. We use the results of Neshveyev and Stormer to show that for a generic shift on a C*-algebra associated to a bitstream the Voiculescu topological entropy is strictly larger that the supremum of topological entropies of its classical subsystems.

An Elementary Proof of the Free-additivity of Voiculescu's Free Entropy

D. Voiculescu [2] proved that a standard family of independent random unitary k by k matrices and a constant k by k unitary matrix is asymtotically free as k goes to infinity. This result was a key ingredient in Voiculescu's proof [3] that his free entropy is additive when the variables are free. In this paper, we give a very elementary proof of a more detailed version of this result [2].

Entropy and induced dynamics on state spaces

We consider the topological entropy of state space and quasi-state space homeomorphisms induced from C*-algebra automorphisms. Our main result asserts that, for automorphisms of separable exact C*-algebras, zero Voiculescu-Brown entropy implies zero topological entropy on the quasi-state space (and also more generally on the entire unit ball of the dual). As an application we obtain a simple description of the topological Pinsker algebra in terms of local Voiculescu-Brown entropy.

Concavification of free entropy

We introduce a modification of Voiculescu's free entropy which coincides with the liminf variant of Voiculescu's free entropy on extremal states, but is a concave upper semi-continuous function on the trace state space. We also extend the orbital free entropy of Hiai, Miyamoto and Ueda to non-hyperfinite multivariables and prove freeness in case of additivity of Voiculescu's entropy (or vanishing of our extended orbital entropy).

Noncommutative pressure and the variational principle in Cuntz-Krieger-type C*-algebras

Topological entropy of some automorphisms of reduced amalgamated free product C*-algebras

Certain classes of automorphisms of recued amalgamated free products of C*-algebras are shown to have Brown-Voiculescu topological entropy zero. Also, for automorphisms of exact C*-algebras, the Connes-Narnhofer-Thirring entropy is shown to be bounded above by the Brown-Voiculescu entropy. Remarks on free entropy dimension

We prove a technical result, showing that the existence of a closable unbounded dual system in the sense of Voiculescu is equivalent to the finiteness of free Fisher information. MF-traces and a Lower Bound for the Topological Free Entropy Dimension in Unital C*-algebras

We continue previous work on Voiculescu's topological free entropy dimension δ_{top}. We introduce the notions of MF-trace, MF-ideal, and MF-nuclearity and use these concepts to obtain upper and lower bounds for δ_{top}, and in many cases we obtain an exact formula for δ_{top}. Topological Free Entropy Dimension of in Unital C^*-algebras

The notion of topological free entropy dimension of $n-$tuples of elements in a unital C$^*$ algebra was introduced by Voiculescu. In the paper, we compute topological free entropy dimension of one self-adjoint element and topological orbit dimension of one self-adjoint element in a unital C$^*$ algebra. Moreover, we calculate the values of topological free entropy dimensions of families of generators of some unital C$^*$ algebras (for example: irrational rotation C$^*$ algebras or minimal tensor product of two reduced C$^*$ algebras of free groups).

Noncommutative topological entropy of endomorphisms of Cuntz algebras II

A study of noncommutative topological entropy of gauge invariant endomorphisms of Cuntz algebras began in our earlier work with Joachim Zacharias is continued and extended to endomorphisms which are not necessarily of permutation type. In particular it is shown that if H is an N-dimensional Hilbert space, V is an irreducible multiplicative unitary on the tensor product of H with itself and F is the tensor flip, then the Voiculescu entropy of the Longo's canonical endomorphism associated with the unitary VF is equal to log N.

Sequences from zero entropy noncommutative toral automorphisms and Sarnak Conjecture

In this paper we study $C^*$-algebra version of Sarnak Conjecture for noncommutative toral automorphisms. Let $A_Θ$ be a noncommutative torus and $α_Θ$ be the noncommutative toral automorphism arising from a matrix $S\in GL(d,\mathbb{Z})$. We show that if the Voiculescu-Brown entropy of $α_Θ$ is zero, then the sequence $\{ρ(α_Θ^nu)\}_{n\in \mathbb{Z}}$ is a sum of a nilsequence and a zero-density-sequence, where $u\in A_Θ$ and $ρ$ is any state on $A_Θ$. Then by a result of Green and Tao, this sequence is linearly disjoint from the Möbius function.

Free Fisher Information for Non-Tracial States

We extend Voiculescu's microstates-free definitions of free Fisher information and free entropy to the non-tracial framework. We explain the connection between these quantities and free entropy with respect to certain completely positive maps acting on the core of the non-tracial non-commutative probability space. We give a condition on free Fisher information of an infinite family of variables, which guarantees factoriality of the von Neumann algebra they generate.

Topological Free Entropy Dimensions in Nuclear C$^$-algebras and in Full Free Products of C$^$-algebras

In the paper, we introduce a new concept of topological orbit dimension of $n$-tuples of elements in a unital C$^*$ algebra. Using this concept, we conclude that the Voiculescu's topological free entropy dimension of any family of self-adjoint generators of a nuclear C$^*$ algebra is less than or equal to 1. We also show that the topological free entropy dimension is additive in the full free products of unital C$^*$ algebras. In the appendix, we show that unital full free product of Blackadar and Kirchberg's unital MF algebras is also MF algebra.
