We extend Voiculescu's microstates-free definitions of free Fisher information and free entropy to the non-tracial framework. We explain the connection between these quantities and free entropy with respect to certain completely positive maps acting on the core of the non-tracial non-commutative probability space. We give a condition on free Fisher information of an infinite family of variables, which guarantees factoriality of the von Neumann algebra they generate.
Several techniques together with some partial answers are given to the questions of factoriality, type classification and fullness for amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras.
Let $M=M_1*M_2$ be a nontrivial tracial free product of finite von Neumann algebras. We prove that any amenable subalgebra of $M$ that has a diffuse intersection with $M_1$ is in fact contained in $M_1$. This has been proved by C. Houdayer under more general circumstances.
In this paper we introduce an analog of the tracial Rokhlin property, called the {\emph {projection free tracial Rokhlin property}}, for $C^*$-algebras which may not have any nontrivial projections. Using this we show that if $A$ is an infinite dimensional stably finite simple unital $C^*$-algebra with stable rank one, with strict comparison of positive elements, with only finitely many extreme tracial states, and with the property that every 2-quasi-trace is a trace, and if $α$ is an action of a finite group $G$ with the projection free tracial Rokhlin property, then the crossed product $C^*(…
We show that the space of tracial quantum symmetric states of an arbitrary unital C*-algebra is a Choquet simplex and is a face of the tracial state space of the universal unital C*-algebra free product of A with itself infinitely many times. We also show that the extreme points of this simplex are dense, making it the Poulsen simplex when A is separable and nontrivial. In the course of the proof we characterize the centers of certain tracial amalgamated free product C*-algebras.
We show that in a tracial and finitely generated $W^\ast$-probability space existence of conjugate variables in an appropriate sense exclude algebraic relations for the generators. Moreover, under the assumption of finite non-microstates free Fisher information, we prove that there are no zero divisors in the sense that the product of any non-commutative polynomial in the generators with any element from the von Neumann algebra is zero if and only if at least one of those factors is zero.
In the paper, we prove that reduced free products of unital AH algebras with respect to given faithful tracial states, in the sense of Voiculescu, are Blackadar and Kirhcberg's MF algebras. We also show that the reduced free products of unital AH algebras with respect to given faithful tracial states, under mild conditions, are not quasidiagonal. Therefore we conclude, for a large class of AH algebras, the Brown-Douglas-Fillmore extension semigroups of the reduced free products of these AH algebras with respect to given faithful tracial states are not groups. Our result is based on Haagerup an…
This article investigates matrix convex sets and introduces their tracial analogs which we call contractively tracial convex sets. In both contexts completely positive (cp) maps play a central role: unital cp maps in the case of matrix convex sets and trace preserving cp (CPTP) maps in the case of contractively tracial convex sets. CPTP maps, also known as quantum channels, are fundamental objects in quantum information theory. Free convexity is intimately connected with Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) L(x) = A_0 + A_1 x_1 + ... + A_g x_g > 0 and their matrix convex solution sets { X : L(X) …
We define the principal divisor of a free noncommuatative function. We use these divisors to compare the determinantal singularity sets of free noncommutative functions. We show that the divisor of a noncommutative rational function is the difference of two polynomial divisors. We formulate a nontrivial theory of cohomology, fundamental groups and covering spaces for tracial free functions. We show that the natural fundamental group arising from analytic continuation for tracial free functions is a direct sum of copies of $\mathbb{Q}$. Our results contrast the classical case, where the analogo…
Given a finite, directed, connected graph $Γ$ equipped with a weighting $μ$ on its edges, we provide a construction of a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful, normal, positive linear functional $(\mathcal{M}(Γ,μ),φ)$. When the weighting $μ$ is instead on the vertices of $Γ$, the first author showed the isomorphism class of $(\mathcal{M}(Γ,μ),φ)$ depends only on the data $(Γ,μ)$ and is an interpolated free group factor equipped with a scaling of its unique trace (possibly direct sum copies of $\mathbb{C}$). Moreover, the free dimension of the interpolated free group factor is easily com…
The notion of a $*$-law or $*$-distribution in free probability is also known as the quantifier-free type in Farah, Hart, and Sherman's model theoretic framework for tracial von Neumann algebras. However, the full type can also be considered an analog of a classical probability distribution (indeed, Ben Yaacov showed that in the classical setting, atomless probability spaces admit quantifier elimination and hence there is no difference between the full type and the quantifier-free type). We therefore develop a notion of Voiculescu's free microstates entropy for a full type, and we show that if…
We formulate a free probabilistic analog of the Wasserstein manifold on $\mathbb{R}^d$ (the formal Riemannian manifold of smooth probability densities on $\mathbb{R}^d$), and we use it to study smooth non-commutative transport of measure. The points of the free Wasserstein manifold $\mathscr{W}(\mathbb{R}^{*d})$ are smooth tracial non-commutative functions $V$ with quadratic growth at $\infty$, which correspond to minus the log-density in the classical setting. The space of smooth tracial non-commutative functions used here is a new one whose definition and basic properties we develop in the p…
For an inclusion of the form $\Bbb C\subseteq M_n(\Bbb C)$, where $M_n(\Bbb C)$ is endowed with a state with diagonal weights $λ=(λ_1, ..., λ_n)$, we use Popa's construction, for non-tracial states, to obtain an irreducible inclusion of $II_1$ factors, $N^λ(Q)\subseteq M^λ(Q) $ of index $\sum \frac{1}{λ_i}$. $M^λ(Q)$ is identified with a subfactor inside the centralizer algebra of the canonical free product state on $Q\star M_N(\Bbb C)$. Its structure is described by ``infinite'' semicircular elements as in \cite{Ra3}. The irreducible subfactor inclusions obtained by this method are similar to…
The von Neumann algebra free product of arbitary finite dimensional von Neumann algebras with respect to arbitrary faithful states, at least one of which is not a trace, is found to be a type~III factor possibly direct sum a finite dimensional algebra. The free product state on the type~III factor is what we call an extremal almost periodic state, and has centralizer isomorphic to $L(\freeF_\infty)$. This allows further classification the type~III factor and provides another construction of full type~III$_1$ factors having arbitrary $\Sd$~invariant of Connes. The free products considered in th…
Assume $\N$ is a von Neumann algebra of type II$_1$ with a tracial state $τ_{\N}$, and $\M$ is the von Neumann algebra of the $n\times n$ matrices over $\N$ with the canonical tracial state $τ_{\M}$. Let $\mathcal D_n$ be the subalgebra of $\M$ consisting of scalar diagonal matrices in $\M$. In this article, we study the properties of semicircular elements in $\M$ that are free from $\mathcal D_n$ with respect to $τ_{\M}$. Then we define a new concept "matricial distance" of two elements in $\M$ and compute the matricial distance between two free semicircular elements in $\M$.
Suppose M is a von Neumann algebra with normal, tracial state phi and {a_1,...,a_n} is a set of self-adjoint elements in M. We provide an alternative uniform packing description of delta_0(a_1,...,a_n), the modified free entropy dimension of {a_1,...,a_n}.
Suppose M is a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra with a tracial state $ϕ$ and $\{a_1,...,a_n\}$ is a set of selfadjoint generators for M. We calculate $δ_0(a_1,...,a_n)$, the modified free entropy dimension of $\{a_1,...,a_n\}$. Moreover we show that $δ_0(a_1,...,a_n)$ depends only on M and $ϕ$. Consequently $δ_0(a_1,...,a_n)$ is independent of the choice of generators for M. In the course of the argument we show that if $\{b_1,...,b_n\}$ is a set of selfadjoint generators for a von Neumann algebra R with a tracial state and $\{b_1,...,b_n\}$ has finite dimensional approximants, then for any $b\…
The existence of Voiculescu's subordination functions in the context of non-tracial operator-valued C*-probability spaces has been established using analytic function theory methods. We use a matrix construction to show that the subordination functions thus obtained also satisfy an appropriately modified form of subordination for conditional expectations.
If $X, Y,$ and $Z$ are finite sets of selfadjoint elements in a tracial von Neumann algebra and $X$ generates a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra, then $δ_0(X \cup Y \cup Z) \leq δ_0(X \cup Y) + δ_0(X \cup Z) - δ_0(X).$ We draw several corollaries from this inequality.
We prove that if $X_{1},...,X_{n} (n >1)$ are selfadjoints in a $W^{*}$-probability space with finite non-microstates free Fisher information, then the von Neumann algebra $W^{*}(X_{1},...,X_{n})$ they generate doesn't have property $Γ$ (especially is not amenable). This is an analog of a well-known result of Voiculescu for microstates free entropy. We also prove factoriality under finite non-microstates entropy.
We prove the free analogue of the transportation cost inequality for tracial distributions of non-commutative self-adjoint (also unitary) multi-variables based on random matrix approximation procedure.
We study the operator-valued free Fisher information of random matrices in an operator-valued noncommutative probability space. We obtain a formula for $Φ^\ast_{M_2(\mb)}(A,A^\ast,M_2(\mb),η)$, where $A\in M_2(\mb)$ is a $2\times 2$ operator matrix on $\mb$, and $η$ is linear operators on $M_2(\mb)$. Then we consider a special setting: $A$ is an operator-valued semicircular matrix with conditional expectation covariance, and find that $Φ_\mb^\ast(c,c^\ast:\mb,id)=2Index(E)$, where $E$ is a conditional expectation of $\mb$ onto $\md$ and $c$ is a circular variable with covariance $E$.
Suppose $M$ is a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful normal state $φ$ and generated by a finite set $G=G^*$, $|G|\geq 2$. We show that if $G$ consists of eigenvectors of the modular operator $Δ_φ$ with finite free Fisher information, then the centralizer $M^φ$ is a $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor and $M$ is either a type $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor or a type $\mathrm{III}_λ$ factor, $0<λ\leq 1$, depending on the eigenvalues of $G$. Furthermore, $(M^φ)'\cap M=\mathbb{C}$, $M^φ$ does not have property $Γ$, and $M$ is full provided it is type $\mathrm{III}_λ$, $0<λ<1$.
The subject of this paper are polynomials in multiple non-commuting variables. For polynomials of this type orthogonal with respect to a state, we prove a Favard-type recursion relation. On the other hand, free Sheffer polynomials are a polynomial family in non-commuting variables with a resolvent-type generating function. Among such families, we describe the ones that are orthogonal. Their recursion relations have a more special form; the best way to describe them is in terms of the free cumulant generating function of the state of orthogonality, which turns out to satisfy a type of second-or…
For a selfadjoint element x in a tracial von Neumann algebra and $α= δ_0(x)$ we compute bounds for $\mathbb H^α(x),$ where $\mathbb H^α(x)$ is the free Hausdorff $α$-entropy of $x.$ The bounds are in terms of $\int \int_{\mathbb R^2 -D} \log |y-z| dμ(y) dμ(z)$ where $μ$ is the Borel measure on the spectrum of x induced by the trace and $D \subset \mathbb R^2$ is the diagonal. We compute similar bounds for the free Hausdorff entropy of a free family of selfadjoints.
Suppose X is an n-tuple of selfadjoint elements in a tracial von Neumann algebra M. If z is a selfadjoint element in M and for some selfadjoint element y in the von Neumann algebra generated by X $δ_0(y, z) < δ_0(y) + δ_0(z)$, then $χ(X \cup \{z\}) = -\infty$ (here $χ$ and $δ_0$ denote the microstates free entropy and free entropy dimension, respectively). In particular, if z lies in the von Neumann algebra generated by X, then $χ(X \cup \{z\}) = -\infty$. The statement and its proof are motivated by geometric-measure-theoretic results on graphs of functions. A similar statement for the nonmic…
We study the free probabilistic analog of optimal couplings for the quadratic cost, where classical probability spaces are replaced by tracial von Neumann algebras, and probability measures on $\mathbb{R}^m$ are replaced by non-commutative laws of $m$-tuples. We prove an analog of the Monge-Kantorovich duality which characterizes optimal couplings of non-commutative laws with respect to Biane and Voiculescu's non-commutative $L^2$-Wasserstein distance using a new type of convex functions. As a consequence, we show that if $(X,Y)$ is a pair of optimally coupled $m$-tuples of non-commutative ran…
Let M be a tracial von Neumann algebra and A be a weakly dense unital C*-subalgebra of M. We say that a set X is a W*-generating set for M if the von Neumann algebra generated by X is M and that X is a C*-generating set for A if the unital C*-algebra generated by X is A. For any finite W*-generating set X for M we show that $δ_0(X) \leq sup {δ_0(Y): Y is a finite C*-generating set for A}$ where $δ_0$ denotes the microstates free entropy dimension. It follows that if $sup {δ_0(Y): Y is a finite C*-generating set for C*_{red}(\mathbb F_2)} < \infty$, then the free group factors are all nonisomor…
We present natural analogues of strong Haagerup inequalities on non-Kac free orthogonal quantum groups $O_F^+$ in which $L^p$-analytic problems are harder due to their non-tracial nature. Furthermore, we prove optimality of the inequalities, and apply the obtained results to compute the optimal time for ultracontractivity of the heat semigroup and to distinguish the complex interpolation space $L^p(O_F^+)$ and the real interpolation space $L^{p,p}(O_F^+)$.
We prove that independent rectangular random matrices, when embedded in a space of larger square matrices, are asymptotically free with amalgamation over a commutative finite dimensional subalgebra $D$ (under an hypothesis of unitary invariance). Then we consider elements of a finite von Neumann algebra containing $D$, which have kernel and range projection in $D$. We associate them a free entropy with the microstates approach, and a free Fisher's information with the conjugate variables approach. Both give rise to optimization problems whose solutions involve freeness with amalgamation over $…
We show that in a tracial and finitely generated $W^\ast$-probability space existence of conjugate variables excludes algebraic relations for the generators. Moreover, under the assumption of maximal non-microstates free entropy dimension, we prove that there are no zero divisors in the sense that the product of any non-commutative polynomial in the generators with any element from the von Neumann algebra is zero if and only if at least one of those factors is zero. In particular, this shows that in this case the distribution of any non-constant self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial in the g…
We consider the free non-commutative analogue Phi^*, introduced by D. Voiculescu, of the concept of Fisher information for random variables. We determine the minimal possible value of Phi^*(a,a^*), if a is a non-commutative random variable subject to the constraint that the distribution of aa^* is prescribed. More generally, we obtain the minimal possible value of Phi^*({a_{ij},a_{ij}^*), if {a_{ij}} is a family of non-commutative random variables such that the distribution of AA^* is prescribed, where A is the matrix (a_{ij}). The d*d-generalization is obtained from the case d=1 via a result …
By defining tracial states on a non-commutative analogue of a path space, we construct Markov dilations for a class of conservative completely Markov semigroups on finite von Neumann algebras. This class includes all symmetric semigroups. For well chosen semigroups (for instance with generator any divergence form operator associated to a derivation valued in the coarse correspondence) those dilations give rise to stationary solutions of certain free SDEs previously considered by D. Shlyakhtenko. Among applications, we prove a non-commutative Talagrand inequality for non-microstates free entrop…
Given a suitably nested family $Z = \langle Z(m,k,γ) \rangle_{m,k \in \mathbb N, γ>0}$ of Borel subsets of matrices, and associated Borel measures and rate function, $μ$, an entropy, $χ^μ(Z)$, is introduced which generalizes the microstates free entropy in free probability theory. Under weak regularity conditions there exists a finite tuple of operators $X$ in a tracial von Neumann algebra such that \begin{eqnarray*} χ^μ(X) & \geq & χ^μ(X \cap Z) & = & χ^μ(Z)\\ \end{eqnarray*} where $X \cap Z = \langle Γ(X;m,k,γ) \cap Z(m,k,γ) \rangle_{m, k \in \mathbb N, γ>0}$. This observation can be used to…
Using Voiculescu's notion of a matricial microstate we introduce fractal dimensions and entropies for finite sets of selfadjoint operators in a tracial von Neumann algebra. We show that they possess properties similar to their classical predecessors. We relate the new quantities to free entropy and free entropy dimension and show that a modified version of free Hausdorff dimension is an algebraic invariant. We compute the free Hausdorff dimension in the cases where the set generates a finite dimensional algebra or where the set consists of a single selfadjoint. We show that the free Hausdorff …
This paper contributes to the current studies on regularity properties of noncommutative distributions in free probability theory. More precisely, we consider evaluations of selfadjoint noncommutative polynomials in noncommutative random variables that have finite non-microstates free Fisher information, highlighting the special case of Lipschitz conjugate variables. For the first time in this generality, it is shown that the analytic distributions of those evaluations have Hölder continuous cumulative distribution functions with an explicit Hölder exponent that depends only on the degree of t…
Free Meixner states are a class of functionals on non-commutative polynomials introduced in math.CO/0410482. They are characterized by a resolvent-type form for the generating function of their orthogonal polynomials, by a recursion relation for those polynomials, or by a second-order non-commutative differential equation satisfied by their free cumulant functional. In this paper, we construct an operator model for free Meixner states. By combinatorial methods, we also derive an operator model for their free cumulant functionals. This, in turn, allows us to construct a number of examples. Many…
This paper gives a free entropy theoretic perspective on amenable absorption results for free products of tracial von Neumann algebras. In particular, we give the first free entropy proof of Popa's famous result that the generator MASA in a free group factor is maximal amenable, and we partially recover Houdayer's results on amenable absorption and Gamma stability. Moreover, we give a unified approach to all these results using $1$-bounded entropy. We show that if $\mathcal{M} = \mathcal{P} * \mathcal{Q}$, then $\mathcal{P}$ absorbs any subalgebra of $\mathcal{M}$ that intersects it diffusely …
