The paper is a survey of dynamical entropy of automorphisms of operator algebras. We describe the different entropies of Connes-Stormer,
Connes-Narnhofer-Thirring, Sauvageot-Thouvenot, and Voiculescu, and discuss the main examples of the theory.
A study of noncommutative topological entropy of gauge invariant endomorphisms of Cuntz algebras began in our earlier work with Joachim Zacharias is continued and extended to endomorphisms which are not necessarily of permutation type. In particular it is shown that if H is an N-dimensional Hilbert space, V is an irreducible multiplicative unitary on the tensor product of H with itself and F is the tensor flip, then the Voiculescu entropy of the Longo's canonical endomorphism associated with the unitary VF is equal to log N.
Noncommutative topological entropy estimates are obtained for polynomial gauge invariant endomorphisms of Cuntz algebras, generalising known results for the canonical shift endomorphisms. Exact values for the entropy are computed for a class of permutative endomorphisms related to branching function systems introduced and studied by Bratteli, Jorgensen and Kawamura.
We show that the Voiculescu-Brown entropy of a noncommutative toral automorphism arising from a matrix S in GL(d,Z) is at least half the value of the topological entropy of the corresponding classical toral automorphism. We also obtain some information concerning the positivity of local Voiculescu-Brown entropy with respect to single unitaries. In particular we show that if S has no roots of unity as eigenvalues then the local Voiculescu-Brown entropy with respect to every product of canonical unitaries is positive, and also that in the presence of completely positive CNT entropy the unital ve…
We use the results of Neshveyev and Stormer to show that for a generic shift on a C*-algebra associated to a bitstream the Voiculescu topological entropy is strictly larger that the supremum of topological entropies of its classical subsystems.
In this paper we study $C^*$-algebra version of Sarnak Conjecture for noncommutative toral automorphisms. Let $A_Θ$ be a noncommutative torus and $α_Θ$ be the noncommutative toral automorphism arising from a matrix $S\in GL(d,\mathbb{Z})$. We show that if the Voiculescu-Brown entropy of $α_Θ$ is zero, then the sequence $\{ρ(α_Θ^nu)\}_{n\in \mathbb{Z}}$ is a sum of a nilsequence and a zero-density-sequence, where $u\in A_Θ$ and $ρ$ is any state on $A_Θ$. Then by a result of Green and Tao, this sequence is linearly disjoint from the Möbius function.
We study quantum Dirichlet forms and the associated symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on noncommutative $L^2$ spaces. It is known from the work of Cipriani and Sauvageot that these semigroups induce a first order differential calculus, and we use this differential calculus to define a noncommutative transport metric on the set of density matrices. This construction generalizes both the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance on a large class of metric spaces as well as the discrete transport distance introduced by Maas, Mielke, and Chow-Huang-Li-Zhou. Assuming a Bakry-Émery-type gradient estimate, we sho…
We consider an intrinsic entropy associated with a local conformal net A by the coefficients in the expansion of the logarithm of the trace of the ``heat kernel'' semigroup. In analogy with Weyl theorem on the asymptotic density distribution of the Laplacian eigenvalues, passing to a quantum system with infinitely many degrees of freedom, we regard these coefficients as noncommutative geometric invariants. Under a natural modularity assumption, the leading term of the entropy (noncommutative area) is proportional to the central charge c, the first order correction (noncommutative Euler charact…
We introduce notions of dimension and dynamical entropy for unital C*-algebras ``metrized'' by means of c-Lip-norms, which are complex-scalar versions of the Lip-norms constitutive of Rieffel's compact quantum metric spaces. Our examples involve UHF algebras and noncommutative tori. In particular we show that the entropy of a noncommutative toral automorphism with respect to the canonical c-Lip-norm coincides with the topological entropy of its commutative analogue.
A definition of relative discrete spectrum of noncommutative W*-dynamical systems is given in terms of the basic construction of von Neumann algebras, motivated from three perspectives: Firstly, as a complementary concept to relative weak mixing of W*-dynamical systems. Secondly, by comparison with the classical (i.e. commutative) case. And, thirdly, by noncommutative examples.
We show that a noncommutative dynamical system of the type that occurs in quantum theory can often be associated with a dynamical principle; that is, an infinitesimal structure that completely determines the dynamics. The nature of these dynamical principles is similar to that of the second order differential equations of classical mechanics, in that one can locate a space of momentum operators, a ``Riemannian metric", and a potential. These structures are classified in terms of geometric objects which, in the simplest cases, occur in finite dimensional matrix algebras. As a consequence, we ob…
To any periodic, unital and full C*-dynamical system (A, α, R) an invertible operator s acting on the Banach space of trace functionals of the fixed point algebra is canonically associated. KMS states correspond to positive eigenvectors of s. A Perron-Frobenius type theorem asserts the existence of KMS states at inverse temperatures equal the logarithms of the inner and outer spectral radii of s (extremal KMS states). Examples arising from subshifts in symbolic dynamics, self-similar sets in fractal geometry and noncommutative metric spaces are discussed. Certain subshifts are naturally associ…
A basic problem in dynamics is to identify systems with positive entropy, i.e., systems which are "chaotic." While there is a vast collection of results addressing this issue in topological dynamics, the phenomenon of positive entropy remains by and large a mystery within the broader noncommutative domain of C*-algebraic dynamics. To shed some light on the noncommutative situation we propose a geometric perspective inspired by work of Glasner and Weiss on topological entropy. This is a written version of the author's talk at the Winter 2002 Meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society in Ottaw…
Dynamical inverse problem of representation theory, which has its origin in a classical paper of E.P.Wigner on a determination of commutation relations of quantum mechanical quantities by the quantum dynamical equations, is illustrated on the simplest examples.
We define a notion of dynamical pressure at a self-adjoint element for a contractive completely positive self-map of an exact C*-algebra which adopts Voiculescu's approximation approach to noncommutative entropy and extends the Voiculescu-Brown topological entropy and Neshveyev-Stormer unital-nuclear pressure. A variational inequality bounding the pressure below by the free energies with respect to the Sauvageot-Thouvenot entropy is established in two stages via the introduction of a local state approximation entropy, whose associated free energies function as an intermediate term. Pimsner C*-…
We define a new notion of entropy for operators on Fock spaces and positive definite multi-Toeplitz kernels on free semigroups. This is studied in connection with factorization theorems for (multi-Toeplitz, multi-analytic, etc.) operators on Fock spaces. These results lead to entropy inequalities and entropy formulas for positive definite multi-Toeplitz kernels on free semigroups (resp.multi-Toeplitz operators) and consequences concerning the extreme points of the unit ball of the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra F_n^\infty. We obtain several geometric characterizations of the multivar…
This text is a detailed overview of the theories of W*-algebras and noncommutative integration, up to the Falcone-Takesaki theory of noncommutative Lp spaces over arbitrary W*-algebras, and its extension to noncommutative Orlicz spaces. The topics under consideration include the Tomita-Takesaki modular theory, the relative modular theory (featuring bimodules, spatial quotients, and canonical representation), the theory of W*-dynamical systems (featuring derivations, liouvilleans, and crossed products), noncommutative Radon-Nikodym type theorems, and operator valued weights. We pay special atte…
This paper extends the classical theory of joinings of measurable dynamical systems to the noncommutative setting from several interconnected points of view. Among these is a particularly fruitful identification of joinings with equivariant quantum channels between $W^{\ast}$-dynamical systems that provides noncommutative generalizations of many fundamental results of classical joining theory. We obtain fully general analogues of the main classical disjointness characterizations of ergodicity, primeness and mixing phenomena.
Noncommutative duality for C*-dynamical systems is a vast generalization of Pontryagin duality for locally compact abelian groups. In this series of lectures, we give an introduction to the categorical aspects of this duality, focusing primarily on Landstad duality for actions and coactions of locally compact groups.
This paper is a continuation of the authors' previous work on noncommutative joinings, and contains a study of relative independence of W$^*$-dynamical systems. We prove that, given any separable locally compact group $G$, an ergodic W$^{*}$-dynamical $G$-system $\mathfrak{M}$ with compact subsystem $\mathfrak{N}$ is disjoint relative to $\mathfrak{N}$ from its maximal compact subsystem $\mathfrak{M}_{K}$ if and only if $\mathfrak{N}\cong\mathfrak{M}_{K}$. This generalizes recent work of Duvenhage, which established the result for $G$ abelian.
For a fixed C*-algebra A, we consider all noncommutative dynamical systems that can be generated by A. More precisely, an A-dynamical system is a triple (i,B,α) where $α$ is a *-endomorphism of a C*-algebra B, and i: A --> B is the inclusion of A as a C^*-subalgebra with the property that B is generated by $A\cup α(A)\cup α^2(A)\cup...$. There is a natural hierarchy in the class of A-dynamical systems, and there is a universal one that dominates all others, denoted (i,PA,α). We establish certain properties of $(i,PA,α)$ and give applications to some concrete issues of noncommutative dynamics. …
We extend the theory of ergodic optimization and maximizing measures to the non-commutative field of C*-dynamical systems. We then employ this ergodic optimization machinery to provide an alternate characterization of unique erogdicity of C*-dynamical systems when the resident group action satisfies certain Choquet-theoretic assumptions.
A C*-dynamical system is said to have the ideal separation property if every ideal in the corresponding crossed product arises from an invariant ideal in the C*-algebra. In this paper we characterize this property for unital C*-dynamical systems over discrete groups. To every C*-dynamical system we associate a "twisted" partial C*-dynamical system that encodes much of the structure of the action. This system can often be "untwisted," for example when the algebra is commutative, or when the algebra is prime and a certain specific subgroup has vanishing Mackey obstruction. In this case, we obtai…
We propose an extension of the sandwiched Rényi relative $α$-entropy to normal positive functionals on arbitrary von Neumann algebras, for the values $α>1$. For this, we use Kosaki's definition of noncommutative $L_p$-spaces with respect to a state. We show that these extensions coincide with the previously defined Araki-Masuda divergences [M. Berta et al., Annales Henri Poincaré, 19:1843--1867, 2018] and prove some of their properties, in particular the data processing inequality with respect to positive normal unital maps. As a consequence, we obtain monotonicity of the Araki relative entrop…
We extend the theory of ergodic optimization and maximizing measures to the non-commutative field of C*-dynamical systems. We then provide a result linking the ergodic optimizations of elements of a C*-dynamical system to the convergence of certain ergodic averages in a suitable seminorm. We also provide alternate proofs of several results in this article using the tools of nonstandard analysis.
We introduce the maximal correlation coefficient $R(M_1,M_2)$ between two noncommutative probability subspaces $M_1$ and $M_2$ and show that the maximal correlation coefficient between the sub-algebras generated by $s_n:=x_1+\ldots +x_n$ and $s_m:=x_1+\ldots +x_m$ equals $\sqrt{m/n}$ for $m\le n$, where $(x_i)_{i\in \mathbb{N}}$ is a sequence of free and identically distributed noncommutative random variables. This is the free-probability analogue of a result by Dembo--Kagan--Shepp in classical probability. As an application, we use this estimate to provide another simple proof of the monotoni…
After investigating by examples the unusual and striking elementary properties of the Penrose tilings and the Arnold cat map, we associate a finite symbolic dynamics with finite grammar rules to each of them. Instead of studying these Markovian systems with the help of set-topology, which would give only pathological results, a noncommutative approximately finite C*-algebra is associated to both systems. By calculating the K-groups of these algebras it is demonstrated that this noncommutative point of view gives a much more appropriate description of the phase space structure of these systems …
We analyse certain Haar systems associated to groupoids obtained by certain natural equivalence relations of dynamical nature on sets like $\{1,2,...,d\}^\mathbb{Z}$, $\{1,2,...,d\}^\mathbb{N}$, $S^1\times S^1$, or $(S^1)^\mathbb{N}$, where $S^1$ is the unitary circle. We also describe properties of transverse functions, quasi-invariant probabilities and KMS states for some examples of von Neumann algebras (and also $C^*$-Algebras) associated to these groupoids. We relate some of these KMS states with Gibbs states of Thermodynamic Formalism. While presenting new results, we will also describe …
We show that the rotation algebras are limit of matrix algebras in a very strong sense of convergence for algebras with additional Lipschitz structure. Our results generalize to higher dimensional noncommutative tori and operator valued coefficients. In contrast to previous results by Rieffel, Li, Kerr, and Latrémolière we use Lipschitz norms induced by the `carré du champ' of certain natural dynamical systems, including the heat semigroup.
