The problem we are dealing with is the following: find two sequences $a_n$ and $b_n$ such that the average of the first $b_n$ triangular numbers (starting with the triangular number 1) is still a triangular number, precisely the $a_n$-th triangular number. We get also some side results: for instance one of the sequence instrumental to finding the asked for sequences turns out to be a bisection of the sequence of the numerators of continued fraction convergents to $\sqrt{3}$.
A triangular field of rational numbers is characterized, with relations to Stirling numbers 2nd, Hyperbolic functions, and centered Binomial distribution. A Generating function is given.
We search for triangular numbers that are multiples of other triangular numbers. It is found that for any positive non-square integer multiplier, there is an infinity of multiples of triangular numbers that are triangular numbers and recurrent relations are deduced theoretically. If the multiplier is a squared integer, there is either one or no solution, depending on the multiplier value.
Mixed sums of squares and triangular numbers (III)
The famous linear diophantine problem of Frobenius is the problem to determine the largest integer (Frobenius number) whose number of representations in terms of $a_1,\dots,a_k$ is at most zero, that is not representable. In other words, all the integers greater than this number can be represented for at least one way. One of the natural generalizations of this problem is to find the largest integer (generalized Frobenius number) whose number of representations is at most a given nonnegative integer $p$. It is easy to find the explicit form of this number in the case of two variables. However,…
For all positive non-square integer multiplier k, there is an infinity of multiples of triangular numbers which are also triangular numbers. With a simple change of variables, these triangular numbers can be found using solutions of Pell equations. With some conditions on parities of fundamental solutions of the simple and generalized Pell equations, only odd solutions of the generalized Pell equation are retained to provide many infinitely solutions found on branches corresponding to each of the generalized fundamental solutions. General algebraic expressions of fundamental solutions of the P…
We study decompositions of natural numbers into triangular summands. For instance, we prove that any natural number can be represented as a sum of four triangular numbers, two of them having even indices and the other two having odd indices. This settles a conjecture by Zhi-Wei Sun (arXiv:1503.03743v8).
Congruences modulo prime powers involving generalized Harmonic numbers are known. While looking for similar congruences, we have encountered a curious triangular array of numbers indexed with positive integers $n,k$, involving the Bernoulli and cycle Stirling numbers. These numbers are all integers and they vanish when $n-k$ is odd. This triangle has many similarities with the Stirling triangle. In particular, we show how it can be extended to negative indices and how this extension produces a {\it second kind} of such integers which may be considered as a new generalization of the Genocchi nu…
We compute the Frobenius number for sequences of triangular and tetrahedral numbers. In addition, we study some properties of the numerical semigroups associated to those sequences.
Euler discovered recurrence for divisor sum functions as a consequence of the pentagonal numbers theorem. With similar idea and also motivated by Ewell's work in 1977, we prove new recurrences for certain divisor sum functions and triangular numbers.
In this paper, we prove that for $d=3,\dots,8$, every natural number can be written as $t_x+t_y+3t_z+dt_w$, where $x$, $y$, $z$, and $w$ are nonnegative integers and $t_k=k(k+1)/2$ $(k=0,1,2,\ldots)$ is a triangular number. Furthermore, we study mixed sums of triangular numbers and certain binary quadratic forms.
We prove that there are exactly five sequences, including the triangular numbers, that satisfy the product rule $T(mn) = T(m) T(n) + T(m-1) T(n-1)$ for all $m, n \ge 1$.
A partition into distinct parts is refinable if one of its parts $a$ can be replaced by two different integers which do not belong to the partition and whose sum is $a$, and it is unrefinable otherwise. Clearly, the condition of being unrefinable imposes on the partition a non-trivial limitation on the size of the largest part and on the possible distributions of the parts. We prove a $O(n^{1/2})$-upper bound for the largest part in an unrefinable partition of $n$, and we call maximal those which reach the bound. We show a complete classification of maximal unrefinable partitions for triangula…
We prove recursive formulas for sums of squares and sums of triangular numbers in terms of sums of divisors functions and we give a variety of consequences of these formulas. Intermediate applications include statements about positivity of the coefficients of some infinite products.
Fix $k \ge 3$. If a multiplicative function $f$ satisfies \[ f(x_1+x_2+\dots+x_k) = f(x_1) + f(x_2) + \dots + f(x_k) \] for arbitrary positive triangular numbers $x_1, x_2, \dots, x_k$, then $f$ is the identity function. This extends Chung and Phong's work for $k=2$.
For any integer $x$, let $T_x$ denote the triangular number $\frac{x(x+1)}{2}$. In this paper we give a complete characterization of all the triples of positive integers $(α, β, γ)$ for which the ternary sums $αx^2 +βT_y + γT_z$ represent all but finitely many positive integers. This resolves a conjecture of Kane and Sun \cite[Conjecture 1.19(i)]{KS08} and complete the characterization of all almost universal ternary mixed sums of squares and triangular numbers.
For an arbitrary integer $x$, an integer of the form $T(x)=\frac{x^2+x}{2}$ is called a triangular number. For positive integers $α_1,α_2,\dots,α_k$, a sum $Δ_{α_1,α_2,\dots,α_k}(x_1,x_2,\dots,x_k)=α_1 T(x_1)+α_2 T(x_2)+\cdots+α_k T(x_k)$ of triangular numbers is said to be almost universal with one exception if the Diophantine equation $Δ_{α_1,α_2,\dots,α_k}(x_1,x_2,\dots,x_k)=n$ has an integer solution $(x_1,x_2,\dots,x_k)\in\mathbb{Z}^k$ for any nonnegative integer $n$ except a single one. In this article, we classify all almost universal sums of triangular numbers with one exception. Furth…
Euler showed that there are infinitely many triangular numbers that are three times other triangular numbers. In general, it is an easy consequence of the Pell equation that for a given square-free m > 1, the relation P=mP' is satisfied by infinitely many pairs of triangular numbers P, P'. After recalling what is known about triangular numbers, we shall study this problem for higher polygonal numbers. Whereas there are always infinitely many triangular numbers which are fixed multiples of other triangular numbers, we give an example that this is false for higher polygonal numbers. However, as …
On a product of three theta functions and the number of representations of integers as mixed ternary sums involving squares, triangular, pentagonal and octagonal numbers
Let $pod_{\ell}(n)$ be the number of $\ell$-regular partitions of $n$ with distinct odd parts. In this article, prove that for any positive integer $k$, the set of non-negative integers $n$ for which $pod_{\ell}(n)\equiv 0 \pmod{p^{k}}$ has density one under certain conditions on $\ell$ and $p$. For $p \in \{3,5,7\}$, we also exhibit multiplicative identities for $pod_{p}(n)$ modulo $p.$
We investigate integer numbers which possess at the same time the properties to be triangulars and squares, that are, numbers $a$ for which do exist integers $m$ and $n$ such that $ a = n^2 = \frac{m \cdot (m+1)}{2} $. In particular, we are interested about ratios between successive numbers of that kind. While the limit of the ratio for increasing $a$ is already known in literature, to the best of our knowledge the limit of the ratio of differences of successive ratios, again for increasing $a$, is a new investigation. We give a result for the latter limit, showing that it coincides with the f…
For positive integers $a,b,c$, and an integer $n$, the number of integer solutions $(x,y,z) \in \mathbb Z^3$ of $a \frac{x(x-1)}{2} + b \frac{y(y-1)}{2} + c \frac{z(z-1)}{2} = n$ is denoted by $t(a,b,c;n)$. In this article, we prove some relations between $t(a,b,c;n)$ and the numbers of representations of integers by some ternary quadratic forms. In particular, we prove various conjectures given by Z. H. Sun in \cite{s}.
A set of $m$ positive integers $\{x_{1},\ldots,x_{m}\}$ is called a $P^{3}_{1}$-set of size $m$ if the product of any three elements in the set increased by one is a cube integer. A $P^{3}_{1}$-set $S$ is said to be extendible if there exists an integer $y\not\in S$ such that $S\cup\{y\}$ still a $P^{3}_{1}$-set. Now, let consider the Diophantine equation $u(u+1)/2=v^{3}$ whose integer solutions produce what we called cubic-triangular numbers. The purpose of this paper is to prove simultaneously that the $P^{3}_{1}$-set $\{1,2,13\}$ is non-extendible and $n=1$ is the unique cubic-triangular nu…
In \cite{ono}, K. Ono, S. Robins and P.T. Wahl considered the problem of determining formulas for the number of representations of a natural number $n$ by a sum of $k$ triangular numbers and derived many applications, including the one connecting these numbers with the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of $k$ odd square integers. They also obtained an application to the number of lattice points in the $k$-dimensional sphere. In this paper, we consider triangular numbers with positive integer coefficients. First we show that if the sum of these coefficients is a multiple of $8$, then th…
Let $\Bbb Z$ and $\Bbb N$ be the set of integers and the set of positive integers, respectively. For $a,b,c,d,n\in\Bbb N$ let $t(a,b,c,d;n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ by $ax(x-1)/2+by(y-1)/2+cz(z-1)/2 +dw(w-1)/2$ $(x,y,z,w\in\Bbb Z$). In this paper we obtain explicit formulas for $t(a,b,c,d;n)$ in the cases $(a,b,c,d)=(1,2,2,4),\ (1,2,4,4),\ (1,1,4,4),\ (1,4,4,4)$, $(1,3,9,9),\ (1,1,3,9)$, $(1,3,3,9)$, $(1,1,9,9),\ (1,9,9,9)$ and $(1,1,1,9).$
Let $\Bbb Z$ and $\Bbb Z^+$ be the set of integers and the set of positive integers, respectively. For $a,b,c,d,n\in\Bbb Z^+$ let $t(a,b,c,d;n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ by $ax(x+1)/2+by(y+1)/2+cz(z+1)/2+dw(w+1)/2$ $(x,y,z,w\in\Bbb Z)$. In this paper, by using Ramanujan's theta functions $φ(q)$ and $ψ(q)$ we present many formulas and conjectures on $t(a,b,c,d;n)$.
We investigate here the representability of integers as sums of triangular numbers, where the $n$-th triangular number is given by $T_n = n(n + 1)/2$. In particular, we show that $f(x_1,x_2,..., x_k) = b_1 T_{x_1} +...+ b_k T_{x_k}$, for fixed positive integers $b_1, b_2,..., b_k$, represents every nonnegative integer if and only if it represents 1, 2, 4, 5, and 8. Moreover, if `cross-terms' are allowed in $f$, we show that no finite set of positive integers can play an analogous role, in turn showing that there is no overarching finiteness theorem which generalizes the statement from positive…
A chain is an ordering of the integers 1 to n such that adjacent pairs have sums of a particular form, such as squares, cubes, triangular numbers, pentagonal numbers, or Fibonacci numbers. For example 4 1 2 3 5 form a Fibonacci chain while 1 2 8 7 3 12 9 6 4 11 10 5 form a triangular chain. Since 1 + 5 is also triangular, this latter forms a triangular necklace. A search for such chains and necklaces can be facilitated by the use of paths of billiard balls on a rectangular or other polygonal billiard table.
Let $\Bbb Z$ and $\Bbb N$ be the set of integers and the set of positive integers, respectively. For $a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k,n\in\Bbb N$ let $N(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k;n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ by $a_1x_1^2+a_2x_2^2+\cdots+a_kx_k^2$, and let $t(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k;n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ by $a_1\frac{x_1(x_1-1)}2+a_2\frac{x_2(x_2-1)}2+\cdots+a_k\frac{x_k(x_k-1)}2$ $(x_1,\ldots,x_k\in\Bbb Z$). In this paper, by using Ramanujan's theta functions $φ(q)$ and $ψ(q)$ we reveal many relations between $t(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k;n)$ and $N(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k;8n+a_1+\cdots+a_k)$ f…
Let $\Bbb Z$ be the set of integers. For positive integers $a,b,c$ and $n$ let $N(a,b,c;n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ by $ax^2+by^2+cz^2$, and let $t(a,b,c;n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ by $ax(x+1)/2+by(y+1)/2+cz(z+1)/2$ $(x,y,z\in\Bbb Z)$. In this paper, by using Ramanujan's theta functions $φ(q)$ and $ψ(q)$ we reveal the relation between $t(2,3,3;n)$ and $N(1,3,3;n+1)$, and the relation between $t(1,1,6;n)$ and $N(1,1,3;n+1)$. We also obtain formulas for $t(a,3a,4b;n),$ $t(a,7a,4b;n),t(3a,5a,4b;n)$ and $t(a,15a,4b;n)$ under certain congruence conditions, where $a$…
