Studied is a generalization of Zagier's q-series identity. We introduce a generating function of L-functions at non-positive integers, which is regarded as a half-differential of the Andrews--Gordon q-series. When q is a root of unity, the generating function coincides with the quantum invariant for the torus knot.
The object of this paper is to propose and prove a new generalization of the Andrews-Gordon identities, extending a recent result of Garrett, Ismail and Stanton. We also give a combinatorial discussion of the finite form of their result, which appeared in the work of Andrews, Knopfmacher, and Paule.
A few years ago Foda, Quano, Kirillov and Warnaar proposed and proved various finite analogs of the celebrated Andrews-Gordon identities. In this paper we use these polynomial identities along with the combinatorial techniques introduced in our recent paper to derive Garrett, Ismail, Stanton type formulas for two variants of the Andrews-Gordon identities.
We present what we call a "motivated proof" of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities. A similar motivated proof of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities was previously given by G. E. Andrews and R. J. Baxter, and was subsequently generalized to Gordon's identities by J. Lepowsky and M. Zhu. We anticipate that the present proof of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities will illuminate certain twisted vertex-algebraic constructions.
A multilateral Bailey Lemma is proved, and multiple analogues of the Rogers--Ramanujan identities and Euler's Pentagonal Theorem are constructed as applications. The extreme cases of the Andrews--Gordon identities are also generalized using the multilateral Bailey Lemma where their final form is written in terms of determinants of theta functions.
We give Andrews-Gordon type series for the principal characters of the level 5 and 7 standard modules of the affine Lie algebra $A^{(2)}_{2}$. We also give conjectural series for some level 2 modules of $A^{(2)}_{13}$.
We give a proof of a recent combinatorial conjecture due to the first author, which was discovered in the framework of commutative algebra. This result gives rise to new companions to the famous Andrews-Gordon identities. Our tools involve graded quotient rings, Durfee squares and rectangles for integer partitions, and $q$-series identities.
In a recent paper, Griffin, Ono and Warnaar present a framework for Rogers-Ramanujan type identities using Hall-Littlewood polynomials to arrive at expressions of the form \[\sum_{λ: λ_1 \leq m} q^{a|λ|}P_{2λ}(1,q,q^2,\ldots ; q^{n}) = \text{"Infinite product modular function"}\] for $a = 1,2$ and any positive integers $m$ and $n$. A recent paper of Rains and Warnaar presents further Rogers-Ramanujan type identities involving sums of terms $q^{|λ|/2}P_λ(1,q,q^2,\ldots;q^n)$. It is natural to attempt to reformulate these various identities to match the well-known Andrews-Gordon identities they …
For positive integers $1\leq i\leq k$, we consider the arithmetic properties of quotients of Wronskians in certain normalizations of the Andrews-Gordon $q$-series $$ \prod_{1\leq n\not \equiv 0,\pm i\pmod{2k+1}}\frac{1}{1-q^n}. $$ This study is motivated by their appearance in conformal field theory, where these series are essentially the irreducible characters of $(2,2k+1)$ Virasoro minimal models. We determine the vanishing of such Wronskians, a result whose proof reveals many partition identities. For example, if $P_{b}(a;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ into parts which are not …
In a work of 1995, Alladi, Andrews, and Gordon provided a generalization of the two Capparelli identities involving certain classes of integer partitions. Inspired by that contribution, in particular as regards the general setting and the tools the authors employed, we obtain new partition identities by identifying further sets of partitions that can be explicitly put into a one-to-one correspondence by the method described in the 1995 paper. As a further result, although of a different nature, we obtain an analytical identity of Rogers-Ramanujan type, involving generating functions, for a cla…
We consider an identity relating Fibonacci numbers to Pascal's triangle discovered by G. E. Andrews. Several authors provided proofs of this identity, all of them rather involved or else relying on sophisticated number theoretical arguments. We not only give a simple and elementary proof, but also show the identity generalizes to arrays other than Pascal's triangle. As an application we obtain identities relating trinomial coefficients and Catalan's triangle to Fibonacci numbers.
We give a new proof of a theorem of Zudilin that equates a very-well-poised hypergeometric series and a particular multiple integral. This integral generalizes integrals of Vasilenko and Vasilyev which were proposed as tools in the study of the arithmetic behaviour of values of the Riemann zeta function at integers. Our proof is based on limiting cases of a basic hypergeometric identity of Andrews.
Following the method of combinatorial telescoping for alternating sums given by Chen, Hou and Mu, we present a combinatorial telescoping approach to partition identities on sums of positive terms. By giving a classification of the combinatorial objects corresponding to a sum of positive terms, we establish bijections that lead a telescoping relation. We illustrate this idea by giving a combinatorial telescoping relation for a classical identity of MacMahon. Recently, Andrews posed a problem of finding a combinatorial proof of an identity on the q-little Jacobi polynomials which was derived bas…
We present what we call a "motivated proof" of the Andrews-Bressoud partition identities for even moduli. A "motivated proof" of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities was given by G. E. Andrews and R. J. Baxter, and this proof was generalized to the odd-moduli case of Gordon's identities by J. Lepowsky and M. Zhu. Recently, a "motivated proof" of the somewhat analogous Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities has been found. In the present work, we introduce "shelves" of formal series incorporating what we call "ghost series," which allow us to pass from one shelf to the next via natural recursions, leadi…
We prove a general theorem on overpartitions with difference conditions that unifies generalisations of Schur's theorem due to Alladi-Gordon, Andrews, Corteel-Lovejoy and the author. This theorem also allows one to give companions and refinements of the generalisations of Andrews' theorems to overpartitions. The proof relies on the method of weighted words of Alladi and Gordon and $q$-difference equation techniques introduced recently by the author.
Let $B_{k,i}(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with certain difference condition and let $A_{k,i}(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with certain congruence condition. The Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon theorem states that $B_{k,i}(n)=A_{k,i}(n)$. Lovejoy obtained an overpartition analogue of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon theorem for the cases $i=1$ and $i=k$. We find an overpartition analogue of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon theorem in the general case. Let $D_{k,i}(n)$ be the number of overpartitions of $n$ satisfying certain difference condition and $C_{k,i}(n)$ be the number of overpartition…
The original Beck conjecture, now a theorem due to Andrews, states that the difference in the number of parts in all partitions into odd parts and the number of parts in all strict partitions is equal to the number of partitions whose set of even parts has one element, and also to the number of partitions with exactly one part repeated. This is a companion identity to Euler's identity. The theorem has been generalized by Yang to a companion identity to Glaisher's identity. Franklin generalized Glaisher's identity, and in this article, we provide a Beck-type companion identity to Franklin's ide…
We prove a new four parameter q-hypergeometric series identity from which the three parameter key identity for the Goellnitz theorem due to Alladi, Andrews, and Gordon, follows as a special case by setting one of the parameters equal to 0. The new identity is equivalent to a four parameter partition theorem which extends the deep theorem of Goellnitz and thereby settles a problem raised by Andrews thirty years ago. Some consequences including a quadruple product extension of Jacobi's triple product identity, and prospects of future research are briefly discussed.
In this article, a finite analogue of the generalized sum-of-tails identity of Andrews and Freitas is obtained. We derive several interesting results as special cases of this analogue, in particular, a recent identity of Dixit, Eyyyunni, Maji and Sood. We derive a new extension of Abel's lemma with the help of which we obtain a one-parameter generalization of a sum-of-tails identity of Andrews, Garvan and Liang, an identity of Ramanujan as well as two new results - one for Ramanujan's function $σ(q)$ and another for the function recently introduced by Andrews and Ballantine. Later we introduce…
By considering a limiting case of a Kronecker-type identity, we obtain an identity found by both Andrews and Crandall. We then use the Andrews-Crandall identity to give a new proof of a formula of Gauss for the representations of a number as a sum of three squares. From the Kronecker-type identity, we also deduce Gauss's theorem that every positive integer is representable as a sum of three triangular numbers.
Bhoria, Eyyunni and Maji recently obtained a four-parameter $q$-series identity which gives as special cases not only all five entries of Ramanujan on pages 354 and 355 of his second notebook but also allows them to obtain an analytical proof of a result of Bressoud and Subbarao. Here, we obtain a finite analogue of their identity which naturally gives finite analogues of Ramanujan's results. Using one of these finite analogues, we deduce an identity for a finite sum involving a ${}_2ϕ_1$. This identity is then applied to obtain a generalization of the generating function version of Andrews' f…
We find an involution as a combinatorial proof of a Ramanujan's partial theta identity. Based on this involution, we obtain a Franklin type involution for squares in the sense that the classical Franklin involution provides a combinatorial interpretation of Euler's pentagonal number theorem. This Franklin type involution can be considered as a solution to a problem proposed by Pak concerning the parity of the number of partitions of n into distinct parts with the smallest part being odd. Using a weighted form of our involution, we give a combinatorial proof of a weighted partition theorem deri…
Using jagged overpartitions, we give three generalizations of a weighted word version of Capparelli's identity due to Andrews, Alladi, and Gordon and present several corollaries.
I revisit an automated proof of Andrews' pentagonal number theorem found by Riese. I uncover a simple polynomial identity hidden behind his proof. I explain how to use this identity to prove Andrews' result along with a variety of new formulas of similar type. I reveal an interesting relation between the tri-pentagonal theorem and items (19), (20), (94), (98) on the celebrated Slater list. Finally, I establish a new infinite family of multiple series identities.
Alladi and Gordon introduced the method of weighted words in 1993 to prove a refinement and generalisation of Schur's partition identity. Together with Andrews, they later used it to refine Capparelli's and Göllnitz' identities too. In this paper, we present a new variant of this method, which can be used to study more complicated partition identities, and apply it to prove refinements and generalisations of three partition identities. The first one, Siladić's theorem (2002), comes from vertex operator algebras. The second one, a conjectural identity of Primc (1999), comes from crystal base th…
We prove a q-series identity that generalises Macdonald's A_{2n}^{(2)} eta-function identity and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We conjecture our result to generalise even further to also include the Andrews-Gordon identities.
Capparelli conjectured two modular identities for partitions whose parts satisfy certain gap conditions, where were motivated by the calculation of characters for the standard modules of certain affine Lie algebras and by vertex operator theory. These identities were subsequently proved and refined by Andrews, who related them to Jacobi theta functions, and also by Alladi-Andrews-Gordon, Capparelli, and Tamba-Xie. In this paper we prove two new companions to Capparelli's identities, where the evaluations are expressed in terms of Jacobi theta functions and false theta functions.
A generalization of a beautiful $q$-series identity found in the unorganized portion of Ramanujan's second and third notebooks is obtained. As a consequence, we derive a new three-parameter identity which is a rich source of partition-theoretic information. In particular, we use this identity to obtain a generalization of a recent result of Andrews, Garvan and Liang, which itself generalizes the famous result of Fokkink, Fokkink and Wang. This three-parameter identity also leads to several new weighted partition identities as well as a natural proof of a recent result of Garvan. This natural p…
Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy introduced the partition function PD(n) as the number of partitions of $n$ with designated summands, where we assume that among parts with equal size, exactly one is designated. They proved that PD(3n+2) is divisible by 3. We obtain a Ramanujan type identity for the generating function of PD(3n+2) which implies the congruence of Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy. For PD(3n), Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy showed that the generating function can be expressed as an infinite product of powers of $(1-q^{2n+1})$ times a function $F(q^2)$. We find an explicit formula for $F(q^2)$, wh…
In 2003, Alladi, Andrews and Berkovich proved an identity for partitions where parts occur in eleven colors: four primary colors, six secondary colors, and one quaternary color. Their work answered a longstanding question of how to go beyond a classical theorem of Göllnitz, which uses three primary and three secondary colors. Their main tool was a deep and difficult four parameter $q$-series identity. In this paper we take a different approach. Instead of adding an eleventh quaternary color, we introduce forbidden patterns and give a bijective proof of a ten-colored partition identity lying be…
We prove several infinite families of $q$-series identities for false theta functions and related series. These identities are motivated by considerations of characters of modules of vertex operator superalgebras and of quantum dilogarithms. We also obtain closely related modular identities of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews type. As a byproduct of our identities, we establish several identities for the Rogers dilogarithm function coming from multi $q$-hypergeometric series with "double poles".
It is known that $q$-orthogonal polynomials play an important role in the field of $q$-series and special functions. During studying Dyson's "favorite" identity of Rogers--Ramanujan type, Andrews pointed out that the classical orthogonal polynomials also have surprising applications in the world of $q$. By inserting Chebyshev polynomials of the third and the fourth kinds into Bailey pairs, Andrews derived a family of Rogers--Ramanujan type identities and also results related to mock theta functions and Hecke--type series. In this paper, by constructing a new Bailey pair involving Chebyshev pol…
In $2003$, Alladi, Andrews and Berkovich proved a four-parameter partition identity lying beyond a celebrated identity of Göllnitz. Since then it has been an open problem to extend their work to five or more parameters. In part I of this pair of papers, we took a first step in this direction by giving a bijective proof of a reformulation of their result. We introduced forbidden patterns, bijectively proved a ten-colored partition identity, and then related, by another bijection, our identity to the Alladi-Andrews-Berkovich identity. In this second paper, we state and bijectively prove an $\fra…
We announce a new four parameter partition theorem from which the (big) theorem of Gollnitz follows by setting any one of the parameters equal to 0. This settles a problem of Andrews who asked whether there exists a result that goes beyond the partition theorem of Gollnitz. We state a four parameter q-series identity (key identity) which is the generating function form of this theorem. In a subsequent paper, the proof of the new four parameter key identity will be given.
Recent works of Andrews--Newman and Hopkins--Sellers unveil an interesting relation between two partition statistics, the crank and the mex. They state that, for a positive integer $n$, there are as many partitions of $n$ with non-negative crank as partitions of $n$ with odd mex. In this paper, we give a bijective proof of a generalization of this identity provided by Hopkins, Sellers, and Stanton. Our method uses an alternative definition of the Durfee decomposition, whose combinatorial link to the crank was recently studied by Hopkins, Sellers, and Yee.
Sums of the form add((-1)^n q^(n(n-1)/2) x^n, n>=0) are called partial theta functions. In his lost notebook, Ramanujan recorded many identities for those functions. In 2003, Warnaar found an elegant formula for a sum of two partial theta functions. Subsequently, Andrews and Warnaar established a similar result for the product of two partial theta functions. In this note, I discuss the relation between the Andrews-Warnaar identity and the (1986) product formula due to Gasper and Rahman. I employ nonterminating extension of Sears-Carlitz transformation for 3ϕ_2 to provide a new elegant proof fo…
In 1984, Bressoud and Subbarao obtained an interesting weighted partition identity for a generalized divisor function, by means of combinatorial arguments. Recently, the last three named authors found an analytic proof of the aforementioned identity of Bressoud and Subbarao starting from a $q$-series identity of Ramanujan. In the present paper, we revisit the combinatorial arguments of Bressoud and Subbarao, and derive a more general weighted partition identity. Furthermore, with the help of a fractional differential operator, we establish a few more Bressoud-Subbarao type weighted partition i…
Euler's classical identity states that the number of partitions of an integer into odd parts and distinct parts are equinumerous. Franklin gave a generalization by considering partitions with exactly $j$ different multiples of $r$, for a positive integer $r$. We prove an analogue of Franklin's identity by studying the number of partitions with $j$ multiples of $r$ in total and in the process, discover a natural generalization of the minimal excludant (mex) which we call the $r$-chain mex. Further, we derive the generating function for $σ_{rc} \textup{mex}(n)$, the sum of $r$-chain mex taken ov…
