We study the moduli space of rank stable based instantons over a connected sum of q copies of CP^2. For c_2=1 we give the homotopy type of the moduli space. For c_2=2 we compute the cohomology of the moduli space.
Generalizing the definitions originally presented by Kuznetsov and Faenzi, we study (possibly non locally free) instanton sheaves of arbitrary rank on Fano threefolds. We classify rank 1 instanton sheaves and describe all curves whose structure sheaves are rank 0 instanton sheaves. In addition, we show that every rank 2 instanton sheaf is an elementary transformation of a locally free instanton sheaf along a rank 0 instanton sheaf. To complete the paper, we describe the moduli space of rank 2 instanton sheaves of charge 2 on a quadric threefold $X$, and show that the full moduli space of rank …
Symplectic instanton vector bundles on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$ constitute a natural generalization of mathematical instantons of rank 2. We study the moduli space $I_{n,r}$ of rank-$2r$ symplectic instanton vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $r\ge2$ and second Chern class $n\ge r,\ n\equiv r({\rm mod}2)$. We give an explicit construction of an irreducible component $I^*_{n,r}$ of this space for each such value of $n$ and show that $I^*_{n,r}$ has the expected dimension $4n(r+1)-r(2r+1)$.
We prove that the singular locus of a rank 2 instanton sheaf $E$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$ which is not locally free has pure dimension 1. Moreover, we also show that the dual and double dual of $E$ are isomorphic locally free instanton sheaves, and that the sheaves $\mathcal{E}xt^1(E,\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^3)$ and $E^{\vee\vee}/E$ are rank $0$ instantons. We also provide explicit examples of instanton sheaves of rank $3$ and $4$ illustrating that all of these claims are false for higher rank instanton sheaves.
We study the irreducible components of the moduli space of instanton sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$, that is rank 2 torsion free sheaves $E$ with $c_1(E)=c_3(E)=0$ satisfying $h^1(E(-2))=h^2(E(-2))=0$. In particular, we classify all instanton sheaves with $c_2(E)\le4$, describing all the irreducible components of their moduli space. A key ingredient for our argument is the study of the moduli space ${\mathcal T}(d)$ of stable sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Hilbert polynomial $P(t)=d\cdot t$, which contains, as an open subset, the moduli space of rank 0 instanton sheaves of multiplicity $d$; we desc…
We study the moduli space of rank 2 instanton sheaves on $\p3$ in terms of representations of a quiver consisting of 3 vertices and 4 arrows between two pairs of vertices. Aiming at an alternative compactification for the moduli space of instanton sheaves, we show that for each rank 2 instanton sheaf, there is a stability parameter $θ$ for which the corresponding quiver representation is $θ$-stable (in the sense of King), and that the space of stability parameters has a non trivial wall-and-chamber decomposition. Looking more closely at instantons of low charge, we prove that there are stabili…
Let $\M_{k}^{n}$ be the moduli space of based (anti-self-dual) instantons on $\cpbar$ of charge $k$ and rank $n$. There is a natural inclusion of rank $n$ instantons into rank $n+1$. We show that the direct limit space is homotopy equivalent to $BU(k)\times BU(k)$. The moduli spaces also have the following algebro-geometric interpretation: Let $\linf$ be a line in the complex projective plane and consider the blow-up at a point away from $\linf$. $\M _{k}^{n}$ can be described as the moduli space of rank $n$ holomorphic bundles on the blownup projective plane with $c_{1}=0$ and $c_{2}=k$ and w…
We present a new method to study 4-dimensional linear spaces of skew-symmetric matrices of constant co-rank 2, based on rank 2 vector bundles on P^3 and derived category tools. The method allows one to prove the existence of new examples of size 10x10 and 14x14 via instanton bundles of charge 2 and 4 respectively, and provides an explanation for what used to be the only known example (Westwick 1996). We also give an algorithm to construct explicitly a matrix of size 14 of this type.

We study the large rank limit of the moduli spaces of framed bundles on the projective plane and the blown-up projective plane. These moduli spaces are identified with various instanton moduli spaces on the 4-sphere and $\cpbar $, the projective plane with the reverse orientation. We show that in the direct limit topology, these moduli spaces are homotopic to classifying spaces. For example, the moduli space of $Sp(\infty)$ or $SO(\infty)$ instantons on $\cpbar $ has the homotopy type of $BU(k)$ where $k$ is the charge of the instantons. We use our results along with Taubes' result concerning …
We prove the rationality and irreducibility of the moduli space of---what we call---the endomorphism-general instanton vector bundles of arbitrary rank on the projective space. In particular, we deduce the rationality of the moduli spaces of rank-two mathematical instantons. This problem was first studied by Hartshorne, Hirschowitz-Narasimhan in the late 1970s, and it has been reiterated within the framework of the ICM 2018.
Let ${\mathcal I}(n)$ denote the moduli space of rank $2$ instanton bundles of charge $n$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$. We know from several authors that ${\mathcal I}(n)$ is an irreducible, nonsingular and affine variety of dimension $8n-3$. Since every rank $2$ instanton bundle on ${\mathbb P}^3$ is stable, we may regard ${\mathcal I}(n)$ as an open subset of the projective Gieseker--Maruyama moduli scheme ${\mathcal M}(n)$ of rank $2$ semistable torsion free sheaves $F$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$ with Chern classes $c_1=c_3=0$ and $c_2=n$, and consider the closure $\overline{{\mathcal I}(n)}$ of ${\mathcal I…
In order to obtain existence criteria for orthogonal instanton bundles on $\mathbb{P}^n$, we provide a bijection between equivalence classes of orthogonal instanton bundles with no global sections and symmetric forms. Using such correspondence we are able to provide explicit examples of orthogonal instanton bundles with no global sections on $\mathbb{P}^n$ and prove that every orthogonal instanton bundle with no global sections on $\mathbb{P}^n$ and charge $c\geq 3$ has rank $r\leq (n-1)c$. We also prove that when the rank $r$ of the bundles reaches the upper bound, $\mathcal{M}_{\mathbb{P}^n}…
We show that instanton bundles of rank $r\le 2n-1$, defined as the cohomology of certain linear monads, on an $n$-dimensional projective variety with cyclic Picard group are semistable in the sense of Mumford-Takemoto. Furthermore, we show that rank $r\le n$ linear bundles with nonzero first Chern class over such varieties are stable. We also show that these bounds are sharp.
We study semi-stable sheaves of rank $2$ with Chern class $c_1=0$, $c_2=2$ and $c_3=0$ on the Fano 3-folds $V_4$ of Picard number $1$, degree $4$ and index $2$. We show the moduli space of such sheaves is isomorphic to the moduli space of semi-stable rank $2$ even degree vector bundles on a genus $2$ curve. This provides a natural smooth compatification of the moduli space of Ulrich bundles of rank $2$ on $V_4$.
We study semistable sheaves of rank $2$ with Chern classes $c_1=0$, $c_2=2$ and $c_3=0$ on the Fano 3-fold $V_5$ of Picard number $1$, degree $5$ and index $2$. We show that the moduli space of such sheaves has a component that is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^5$ by identifying it with the moduli space of semistable quiver representations. This provides a natural smooth compactification of the moduli space of minimal instantons, as well as Ulrich bundles of rank $2$ on $V_5$.
Motivated by Yang-Mills theory in 4n dimensions, and generalizing the notion due to Atiyah, Drinfeld, Hitchin and Manin for n=1, Okonek, Spindler and Trautmann introduced instanton bundles and special instanton bundles as certain algebraic vector bundles of rank 2n on the complex projective space P^{2n+1}. The moduli space of special instanton bundles is shown to be rational.
In this note we prove that the moduli space of rank $2n$ symplectic instanton bundles on ${\PP^{2n+1}}$, defined from the well known monad condition, is affine. This result was not known even in the case $n=1$, where the real instanton bundles correspond to self dual Yang Mills $Sp(1)$-connections over the 4-dimensional sphere. The result is proved as a consequence of the existence of an invariant of the multidimensional matrices representing the instanton bundles.
We study the moduli space $I_{n,r}$ of rank-$2r$ symplectic instanton vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $r\ge2$ and second Chern class $n\ge r+1,\ n-r\equiv 1(\mathrm{mod}2)$. We introduce the notion of tame symplectic instantons by excluding a kind of pathological monads and show that the locus $I^*_{n,r}$ of tame symplectic instantons is irreducible and has the expected dimension, equal to $4n(r+1)-r(2r+1)$. The proof is inherently based on a relation between the spaces $I^*_{n,r}$ and the moduli spaces of 't Hooft instantons
We consider an analogue of the notion of instanton bundle on the projective 3-space, consisting of a class of rank-2 vector bundles defined on smooth Fano threefolds X of Picard number one, having even or odd determinant according to the parity of K_X. We first construct a well-behaved irreducible component of their moduli spaces. Then, when the intermediate Jacobian of X is trivial, we look at the associated monads, hyperdeterminants and nets of quadrics. We also study one case where the intermediate Jacobian of X is non-trivial, namely when X is the intersection of two quadrics in P5, relati…
Mathematical instanton bundles of rank 4 and $c_2=2$ on ${\mathbb P}^4$ have a smoothquasiprojective moduli space, which is shown via a direct GIT construction. A complete classification of jumping lines of these vector bundles is obtained. The duals of these bundles are described. Dimension computations and irreducibility proofs for some "interesting" subsets of the moduli space are presented. Restrictions of vector bundles from ${\mathbb P}^4$ to ${\mathbb P}^3$ are shown to produce mathematical instanton bundles on ${\mathbb P}^3$.
We study a class of torsion-free sheaves on complex projective spaces which generalize the much studied mathematical instanton bundles. Instanton sheaves can be obtained as cohomologies of linear monads and are shown to be semistable if its rank is not too large, while semistable torsion-free sheaves satisfying certain cohomological conditions are instanton. We also study a few examples of moduli spaces of instanton sheaves.
On P3, we show that mathematical instantons in characteristic two are unobstructed. We produce upper bounds for the dimension of the moduli space of stable rank two bundles on P3 in characteristic two. In cases where there is a phenomenon of good reduction modulo two, these give similar results in characteristic zero. We also give an example of a non-reduced component of the moduli space in characteristic two.
Denote by MI(k) the moduli space of k-instanton bundles E of rank 2 on $\PP^3=\PP(V)$ and by $Z_k(E)$ the scheme of k-jumping lines. We prove that $[E]\in MI(k)$ is not stable for the action of SL(V) if $Z_k(E)\neq\emptyset$. Moreover $\dim Sym(E)\ge 1$ if $length Z_k(E)\ge 2$. We prove also that E is special if and only if $Z_k(E)$ is a smooth conic. The action of SL(V) on the moduli of special instanton bundles is studied in detail.
The problem of irreducibility of the moduli space I_n of rank-2 mathematical instanton vector bundles with arbitrary positive second Chern class n on the projective 3-space is considered. The irreducibility of I_n was known for small values of n: Barth 1977 (n=1), Hartshorne 1978 (n=2), Ellingsrud and Stromme 1981 (n=3), Barth 1981 (n=4), Coanda, Tikhomirov and Trautmann 2003 (n=5). In this paper we prove the irreducibility of I_n for an arbitrary odd n.
A generic quartic 3-fold X admits a 7-dimensional family of representations as the Pfaffian of an 8 by 8 skew-symmetric matrix of linear forms. This provides a 7-dimensional moduli space M of rank 2 vector bundles on X. A precise geometric description of a 14-dimensional family of half-canonical curves C of genus 15 in X such that the above vector bundles are obtained by Serre's construction from C is given. It is proved that the Abel-Jacobi map of this family factors through M, and the resulting map from M to the intermediate Jacobian is quasi-finite. In particular, every component of M has n…
A trisymplectic structure on a complex 2n-manifold is a triple of holomorphic symplectic forms such that any linear combination of these forms has constant rank 2n, n or 0, and degenerate forms in $Ω$ belong to a non-degenerate quadric hypersurface. We show that a trisymplectic manifold is equipped with a holomorphic 3-web and the Chern connection of this 3-web is holomorphic, torsion-free, and preserves the three symplectic forms. We construct a trisymplectic structure on the moduli of regular rational curves in the twistor space of a hyperkaehler manifold, and define a trisymplectic reductio…
In this paper we deal with a particular class of rank two vector bundles (\emph{instanton} bundles) on the Fano threefold of index one $F:=\mathbb{F}_1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. We show that every instanton bundle on $F$ can be described as the cohomology of a monad whose terms are free sheaves. Furthermore we prove the existence of instanton bundles for any admissible second Chern class and we construct a nice component of the moduli space where they sit. Finally we show that minimal instanton bundles (i.e. with the least possible degree of the second Chern class) are aCM and we describe their mo…
Let Sigma be a smooth complex curve, and let S be the product ruled surface Sigma \times CP^1. We prove a correspondence conjectured by Donaldson between finite energy U(2)-instantons over the cylinder Sigma \times S^1 \times R, and rank 2 holomorphic bundles over S whose restrictions to the divisors at infinity are stable.
We look at the following question raised by Kollár and Peskine. (Actually, it is a slightly weaker version of their question.) Let $V_t$ be a family of rank two vector bundles on $\Bbb P^3$. Assume that the general member of the family is a trivial vector bundle. Then, is the special member $V_0$ also a trivial vector bundle? We show that this question is equivalent to the nonexistence of morphisms from $\Bbb P^3\to \mathcal{X}$, where $\mathcal{X}$ is the infinite Grassmannian associated to SL(2). We further reduce this question to the nonexistence of $\Bbb C^*$-equivariant morphisms from $\B…
In this article we study the Gieseker-Maruyama moduli spaces $\mathcal{B}(e,n)$ of stable rank 2 algebraic vector bundles with Chern classes $c_1=e\in\{-1,0\},\ c_2=n\ge1$ on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$. We construct two new infinite series $Σ_0$ and $Σ_1$ of irreducible components of the spaces $\mathcal{B}(e,n)$, for $e=0$ and $e=-1$, respectively. General bundles of these components are obtained as cohomology sheaves of monads, the middle term of which is a rank 4 symplectic instanton bundle in case $e=0$, respectively, twisted symplectic bundle in case $e=-1$. We show that the seri…
A new approach to solving a class of rankconstrained semi-definite programming (SDP) problems, which appear in many signal processing applications such as transmit beamspace design in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, downlink beamforming design in MIMO communications, generalized sidelobe canceller design, phase retrieval, etc., is presented. The essence of the approach is the use of underlying algebraic structure enforced in such problems by other practical constraints such as, for example, null shaping constraint. According to this approach, instead of relaxing the non-convex ran…
It has been proved by various authors that a normalized, 1-Buchsbaum rank 2 vector bundle on P3 is a nullcorrelation bundle, while a normalized, 2-Buchsbaum rank 2 vector bundle on P3 is an instanton bundle of charge 2. We find that the same is not true for 3-Buchsbaum rank 2 vector bundles on P3, and propose a conjecture regarding the classification of such objects.
Mathematical instanton bundles on $ P_3$ have their analogues in rank--$2n$ instanton bundles on odd dimensional projective spaces $ P_{2n+1}$. The families of special instanton bundles on these spaces generalize the special 'tHooft bundles on $ P_3$. We prove that for a special symplectic instanton bundle $ E$ on $ P_{2n+1}$ with $c_2=k$ $h^1End( E) = 4(3n-1) k + (2n-5)(2n-1)$. Therefore the dimension of the moduli space of instanton bundles grows linearly in $k$. The main difference with the well known case of $ P_3$ is that $h^2End( E)$ is nonzero, in fact we prove that it grows quadratical…
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a moduli space of polystable rank 2-bundles bundles with fixed determinant (a moduli space of $\mathrm{PU}(2)$-instantons) on a Gauduchon surface with $p_g=0$ and $b_1=1$. We study the holomorphic structure of $\mathcal{M}$ around a circle $\mathcal{T}$ of regular reductions. Our model space is a "blowup flip passage", which is a manifold with boundary whose boundary is a projective fibration, and whose interior comes with a natural complex structure. We prove that a neighborhood of the boundary of the blowup $\hat{\mathcal{M}}_{\mathcal{T}}$ of $\mathcal{M}$ at $\mathcal{…
We perform an exact computation of the gauged linear sigma model associated to a D1-D5 brane system on a resolved A_1 singularity. This is accomplished via supersymmetric localization on the blown-up two-sphere. We show that in the blow-down limit C^2/Z_2 the partition function reduces to the Nekrasov partition function evaluating the equivariant volume of the instanton moduli space. For finite radius we obtain a tower of world-sheet instanton corrections, that we identify with the equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of the ADHM moduli space. We show that these corrections can be encoded in a…
We give the general presciption for calculating the moduli of irreducible, stable SU(n) holomorphic vector bundles with positive spectral covers over elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. Explicit results are presented for Hirzebruch base surfaces B=F_r. The transition moduli that are produced by chirality changing small instanton phase transitions are defined and specifically enumerated. The origin of these moduli, as the deformations of the spectral cover restricted to the ``lift'' of the horizontal curve of the M5-brane, is discussed. We present an alternative description of the trans…
We describe explicitly the moduli spaces $M^{pst}_g(S,E)$ of polystable holomorphic structures $E$ with $\det E\cong K$ on a rank 2 vector bundle $E$ with $c_1(E)=c_1(K)$ and $c_2(E)=0$ for all minimal class VII surfaces $S$ with $b_2(S)=1$ and with respect to all possible Gauduchon metrics $g$. These surfaces $S$ are non-elliptic and non-Kaehler complex surfaces and have recently been completely classified. When $S$ is a half or parabolic Inoue surface, $M^{pst}_g(S,E)$ is always a compact one-dimensional complex disc. When $S$ is an Enoki surface, one obtains a complex disc with finitely man…
