Let Sigma be a smooth complex curve, and let S be the product ruled surface Sigma \times CP^1. We prove a correspondence conjectured by Donaldson between finite energy U(2)-instantons over the cylinder Sigma \times S^1 \times R, and rank 2 holomorphic bundles over S whose restrictions to the divisors at infinity are stable.
We consider an instanton,$\textbf{A}$,with $L^{2}$-curvature $F_{\textbf{A}}$ on the cylindrical manifold $Z=\mathbf{R}\times M$,where $M$ is a closed Riemannian $n$-manifold, $n\geq 4$.We assume $M$ admits a $3$-form $P$ and a $4$-form $Q$ satisfy $dP=4Q$ and $d\ast{Q}=(n-3)\ast P$.Manifolds with these forms include nearly Kähler 6-manifolds and nearly parallel $G_{2}$-manifolds in dimension 7.Then we can prove that the instanton must be a flat connection.
We show that the moduli space $M$ of holomorphic vector bundles on $CP^3$ that are trivial along a line is isomorphic (as a complex manifold) to a subvariety in the moduli of rational curves of the twistor space of the moduli space of framed instantons on $\R^4$, called the space of twistor sections. We then use this characterization to prove that $M$ is equipped with a torsion-free affine connection with holonomy in $Sp(2n,\C)$.
Instanton bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ have been at the core of the research in Algebraic Geometry during the last thirty years. Motivated by the recent extension of their definition to other Fano threefolds of Picard number one, we develop the theory of instanton bundles on the complete flag variety $F:=F(0,1,2)$ of point-lines on $\mathbb{P}^2$. After giving for them two different monadic presentations, we use it to show that the moduli space $MI_F(k)$ of instanton bundles of charge $k$ is a geometric GIT quotient and the open subspace $MI^s_F(k)\subset MI_F(k)$ of stable instanton bundles has …
A concrete model for a 7-dimensional gauge theory under special holonomy is proposed, within the paradigm outlined by Donaldson and Thomas, over the asymptotically cylindrical G2-manifolds provided by Kovalev's noncompact version of the Calabi conjecture. One obtains a solution to the $G_2$-instanton equation from the associated Hermitian Yang-Mills problem, to which the methods of Simpson et al. are applied, subject to a crucial asymptotic stability assumption over the "boundary at infinity".
Using gauge theory for Spin(7)-manifolds of dimension 8, we develop a procedure, called Spin-rotation, which transforms a (stable) holomorphic structure on a vector bundle over a complex torus of dimension 4 into a new holomorphic structure over a different complex torus. We show non-trivial examples of this procedure by rotating a decomposable Weil abelian variety into a non-decomposable one. As a byproduct, we obtain a Bogomolov type inequality, which gives restrictions for the existence of stable bundles on an abelian variety of dimension 4, and show examples in which this is stronger than …
We compute explicit solutions $Λ^\pm_m$ of the Painleve VI (PVI) differential equation from equivariant instanton bundles $E_m$ corresponding to Yang-Mills instantons with "quadrupole symmetry." This is based on a generalization of Hitchin's logarithmic connection to vector bundles with an $SL_2({\mathbb C})$ action. We then identify explicit Okamoto transformation which play the role of "creation operators" for construction $Λ^\pm_m$ from the "ground state" $Λ^\pm_0$, suggesting that the equivariant instanton bundles $E_m$ might similarly be related to the trivial "ground state" $E_0$.
This is the first nontrivial construction to date of instantons over a compact manifold with holonomy exactly $G_2$. The HYM connections on asymptotically stable bundles over Kovalev's noncompact Calabi-Yau 3-folds, obtained in the first article, are glued compatibly with a twisted connected sum, to produce a $G_2-$instanton over the resulting compact 7-manifold. This is accomplished under a nondegeneracy acyclic assumption on the bundle `at infinity', which occurs e.g. over certain projective varieties $X_{22}$ in $\mathbb{C}P^{13}$ equipped with an asymptotically rigid bundle.
The Hodge Conjecture is equivalent to a statement about conditions under which a complex vector bundle on a smooth complex projective variety admits a holomorphic structure. I advertise a class of abelian four-folds due to Mumford where this approach could be tested. I construct explicit smooth vector bundles - which can in fact be constructed in terms of of smooth line bundles - whose Chern characters are given Hodge classes. An instanton connection on these vector bundles would endow them with a holomorphic structure and thus prove that these classes are algebraic. I use complex multiplicati…
We prove an existence theorem for gauge invariant $L^2$-normal neighborhoods of the reduction loci in the space ${\cal A}_a(E)$ of oriented connections on a fixed Hermitian 2-bundle $E$. We use this to obtain results on the topology of the moduli space ${\cal B}_a(E)$ of (non-necessarily irreducible) oriented connections, and to study the Donaldson $μ$-classes globally around the reduction loci. In this part of the article we use essentially the concept of harmonic section in a sphere bundle with respect to an Euclidean connection. Second, we concentrate on moduli spaces of instantons on defin…
A trisymplectic structure on a complex 2n-manifold is a triple of holomorphic symplectic forms such that any linear combination of these forms has constant rank 2n, n or 0, and degenerate forms in $Ω$ belong to a non-degenerate quadric hypersurface. We show that a trisymplectic manifold is equipped with a holomorphic 3-web and the Chern connection of this 3-web is holomorphic, torsion-free, and preserves the three symplectic forms. We construct a trisymplectic structure on the moduli of regular rational curves in the twistor space of a hyperkaehler manifold, and define a trisymplectic reductio…
We consider a version of Hermitian-Einstein equation but perturbed by a Higgs field with a solution called a Donaldson-Thomas instanton on compact Kähler threefolds. The equation could be thought of as a generalization of the Hitchin equation on Riemann surfaces to Kähler threefolds. In the appendix of arXiv:0805.2192, following an analogy with the Hitchin equation, we introduced a stability condition for a pair consisting of a locally-free sheaf over a compact Kähler threefold and a section of the associated sheaf of the endomorphisms tensored by the canonical bundle of the threefold. In this…
Adjusting conventional Chern-Simons theory to ${\rm G}_2$-manifolds, one describes ${\rm G}_2$-instantons on bundles over a certain class of $7$-dimensional flat tori which fiber non-trivially over $T^4$, by a pullback argument. Moreover, if $c_2\neq0$, any (generic) deformation of the ${\rm G}_2$-structure away from such a fibred structure causes all instantons to vanish. A brief investigation in the general context of (conformally compatible) associative fibrations $f:Y^7\to X^4$ relates ${\rm G}_2$-instantons on pullback bundles $f^*E\to Y$ and self-dual connections on the bundle $E\to X$ o…
This work is a continuation of the former paper in which principal bundles are given by compact spin toric manifolds and compact connected semisimple Lie groups. In this paper, ambient manifolds are assumed to be compact toric manifolds and Lie groups are compact connected. The main result is that locally smooth manifolds are the instanton moduli spaces of the noncommutative vector bundles over noncommutative 4-manifolds associated with highest weights of the compact Lie groups. Moreover their dimensions are described explicitly in terms of given principal bundles and highest weights. As a cor…
Using earlier work of Sá Earp and the author [SEW13] we construct an irreducible unobstructed $G_2$-instanton on an $\mathrm{SO}(3)$-bundle over a twisted connected sum recently discovered by Crowley-Nordström [CN14].
We study doubly-periodic instantons, i.e. instantons on the product of a 1-dimensional complex torus T with a complex line C, with quadratic curvature decay. We determine the asymptotic behaviour of these instantons, constructing new asymptotic invariants. We show that the underlying holomorphic bundle extends to TxP1. The converse statement is also true, namely a holomorphic bundle on TxP1 which is flat on the torus at infinity, and satisfies a stability condition, comes from a doubly-periodic instanton. Finally, we study the hyperkahler geometry of the moduli space of doubly-periodic instant…
We describe the infinitesimal moduli space of pairs $(Y, V)$ where $Y$ is a manifold with $G_2$ holonomy, and $V$ is a vector bundle on $Y$ with an instanton connection. These structures arise in connection to the moduli space of heterotic string compactifications on compact and non-compact seven dimensional spaces, e.g. domain walls. Employing the canonical $G_2$ cohomology developed by Reyes-Carrión and Fernández and Ugarte, we show that the moduli space decomposes into the sum of the bundle moduli $H^1_{\check{d}_A}(Y,\mathrm{End}(V))$ plus the moduli of the $G_2$ structure preserving the i…
We present a novel approach to the study of Yang-Mills instantons on quaternionic Kähler manifolds, based on an extension of the harmonic space method of constructing instantons on hyperkähler manifolds. Our results establish a bijection between local equivalence classes of instantons on quaternionic Kähler manifolds M and equivalence classes of certain holomorphic maps on an appropriate SL_2(C)-bundle over the Swann bundle of M.
An instanton $(E, D)$ on a (pseudo-)hyperkähler manifold $M$ is a vector bundle $E$ associated to a principal $G$-bundle with a connection $D$ whose curvature is pointwise invariant under the quaternionic structures of $T_x M, \ x\in M$, and thus satisfies the Yang-Mills equations. Revisiting a construction of solutions, we prove a local bijection between gauge equivalence classes of instantons on $M$ and equivalence classes of certain holomorphic functions taking values in the Lie algebra of $G^\mathbb{C}$ defined on an appropriate $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-bundle over $M$. Our reformulation affords…
When the rank of the bundle is $\geq 2$, in a certain sense, we found an essential obstruction for the gluing construction of $G_{2}-$instantons with $1-$dimensional singularities. It involves the Atiyah classes generated by contracting a vector in $\mathbb{C}^{3}$ with the curvature. Intuitively speaking, the gluing does not work if the tangent connection at a component of the $1-$dimensional singular locus is not the twisted Fubini-Study connection on a twisted tangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^{2}$. Particularly, it fails if the rank of the bundle is $\geq 3$.
We introduce a method to construct $G_2$-instantons over compact $G_2$-manifolds arising as the twisted connected sum of a matching pair of building blocks [Kov03,KL11,CHNP12]. Our construction is based on gluing $G_2$-instantons obtained from holomorphic bundles over the building blocks via the first named author's work [SE11]. We require natural compatibility and transversality conditions which can be interpreted in terms of certain Lagrangian subspaces of a moduli space of stable bundles on a K3 surface.
We prove an energy identity for anti-self-dual connections on the product C\timesΣof the complex plane and a Riemann surface. The energy is a multiple of a basic constant that is determined from the values of a corresponding Chern-Simons functional on flat connections and its ambiguity under gauge transformations. For SU(2)-bundles this identity supports the conjecture that the finite energy anti-self-dual instantons correspond to holomorphic bundles over CP^1\timesΣ. Such anti-self-dual instantons on SU(n)- and SO(3)-bundles arise in particular as bubbles in adiabatic limits occurring in the …
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a moduli space of polystable rank 2-bundles bundles with fixed determinant (a moduli space of $\mathrm{PU}(2)$-instantons) on a Gauduchon surface with $p_g=0$ and $b_1=1$. We study the holomorphic structure of $\mathcal{M}$ around a circle $\mathcal{T}$ of regular reductions. Our model space is a "blowup flip passage", which is a manifold with boundary whose boundary is a projective fibration, and whose interior comes with a natural complex structure. We prove that a neighborhood of the boundary of the blowup $\hat{\mathcal{M}}_{\mathcal{T}}$ of $\mathcal{M}$ at $\mathcal{…
Given two compact hyperkähler surfaces $X$ and $Y$ and a holomorphic vector bundle $Q$ on $X\times Y$, which is a generalized instanton, one can define a Fourier-Mukai transform, which, under suitable assumptions, maps vector bundles on $X$ to vector bundles on $Y$. If $X$ and $Y$ are dual complex tori, this transform maps instantons on $X$ to instantons on $Y$. After a quick review of these results, we define a Fourier-Mukai transform in the case when $X$ is a K3 surface, and study the behaviour of instantons on $X$ under this transform. Let $X$ be a closed $6-$dimensional manifold with a half-closed $SU(3)-$structure. On the product manifold $X\times S^{1}$, with respect to the product $G_{2}-$structure and on a pullback vector bundle from $X$, we show that any $G_{2}-$instanton is equivalent to a Hermitian Yang-Mills connection on $X$ via a "broken gauge". This result reveals the topological type of the moduli of $G_{2}-$instantons on $X\times S^{1}$. In dimension $8$, similar result holds for moduli of $Spin(7)-$instantons. A generalization and an example are given.
We give a sufficient condition for an associative submanifold in a G2-manifold to appear as the bubbling locus of a sequence of G2-instantons, related to the existence of a Fueter section of a bundle of ASD instanton moduli spaces over said submanifold.
In this article we introduce a method to construct $\rm{G}_2$-instantons on $\rm{G}_2$-manifolds arising from Joyce's generalised Kummer construction. The method is based on gluing ASD instantons over ALE spaces to flat bundles on $\rm{G}_2$-orbifolds of the form $T^7/ Γ$. We use this construction to produce non-trivial examples of $\rm{G}_2$-instantons.
We classify finite energy harmonic 2-forms on the asymptotically flat gravitational instanton constructed by Chen and Teo. We prove that every $U(1)$-bundle admits a unique anti-self-dual Yang-Mills instanton (up to gauge equivalence) which we describe explicitly in coordinates. As an application, we compute the classical partition function for Maxwell theory with theta term.
We review a method to construct $\rm{G}_2$--instantons over compact $\rm{G}_2$--manifolds arising as the twisted connected sum of a matching pair of Calabi-Yau $3$-folds with cylindrical end, based on the series of articles [SE15, SEW15, JMPSE17, MNSE17] by the author and others. The construction is based on gluing $\rm{G}_2$--instantons obtained from holomorphic bundles over such building blocks, subject to natural compatibility and transversality conditions. Explicit examples are obtained from matching pairs of semi-Fano $3$-folds by an algorithmic procedure based on the Hartshorne-Serre cor…
Non-compact G_2 holonomy metrics that arise from a T^2 bundle over a hyper-Kahler space are discussed. These are one parameter deformations of the metrics studied by Gibbons, Lu, Pope and Stelle in hep-th/0108191. Seven-dimensional spaces with G_2 holonomy fibered over the Taub-Nut and the Eguchi-Hanson gravitational instantons are found, together with other examples. By considering the Apostolov-Salamon theorem math.DG/0303197, we construct a new example that, still being a T^2 bundle over hyper-Kahler, represents a non trivial two parameter deformation of the metrics studied in hep-th/010819…
We describe explicitly the moduli spaces $M^{pst}_g(S,E)$ of polystable holomorphic structures $E$ with $\det E\cong K$ on a rank 2 vector bundle $E$ with $c_1(E)=c_1(K)$ and $c_2(E)=0$ for all minimal class VII surfaces $S$ with $b_2(S)=1$ and with respect to all possible Gauduchon metrics $g$. These surfaces $S$ are non-elliptic and non-Kaehler complex surfaces and have recently been completely classified. When $S$ is a half or parabolic Inoue surface, $M^{pst}_g(S,E)$ is always a compact one-dimensional complex disc. When $S$ is an Enoki surface, one obtains a complex disc with finitely man…
We construct the moduli space of Spin(7)-instantons on a hermitian complex vector bundle over a closed 8-dimensional manifold endowed with a (possibly non-integrable) Spin(7)-structure. We find suitable perturbations that achieve regularity of the moduli space, so that it is smooth and of the expected dimension over the irreducible locus.
We formulate the deformation theory for instantons on nearly Kähler six-manifolds using spinors and Dirac operators. Using this framework we identify the space of deformations of an irreducible instanton with semisimple structure group with the kernel of an elliptic operator, and prove that abelian instantons are rigid. As an application, we show that the canonical connection on three of the four homogeneous nearly Kähler six-manifolds G/H is a rigid instanton with structure group H. In contrast, these connections admit large spaces of deformations when regarded as instantons on the tangent bu…
We give a construction of $G_2$ and $Spin(7)$ instantons on exceptional holonomy manifolds constructed by Bryant and Salamon, by using an ansatz of spherical symmetry coming from the manifolds being the total spaces of rank-4 vector bundles. In the $G_2$ case, we show that, in the asymptotically conical model, the connections are asymptotic to Hermitian Yang-Mills connections on the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$.
In this paper we study ${\rm Spin}(7)$-instantons on asymptotically conical ${\rm Spin}(7)$-orbifolds (and manifolds) obtained by filling in certain squashed $3$-Sasakian $7$-manifolds. We construct a $1$-parameter family of explicit ${\rm Spin}(7)$-instantons. Taking the parameter to infinity, the family (a) bubbles off an ASD connection in directions transverse to a certain Cayley submanifold $Z$, (b) away from $Z$ smoothly converges to a limit ${\rm Spin}(7)$-instanton that extends across $Z$ onto a topologically distinct bundle, (c) satisfies an energy conservation law for the instantons a…
We determine the quantum cohomology of the moduli space of odd degree rank two stable vector bundles over a Riemann surface $Σ$ of any genus. This work together with dg-ga/9710029 prove that this quantum cohomology is isomorphic to the instanton Floer cohomology of the three manifold $Σ\times S^1$. (Note: There is some overlap with the previous paper: alg-geom/9711013).
We develop the gluing theory of contact instantons in the context of open strings and in the context of closed strings \emph{with vanishing charge}, for example in the symplectization context. This is one of the key ingredients for the study of (virtually) smooth moduli space of (bordered) contact instantons needed for the construction of contact instanton Floer cohomology and more generally for the construction of Fukaya-type category of Legendrian submanifolds in contact manifold $(M,ξ)$. As an application, we apply the gluing theorem to give the construction of (cylindrical) Legendrian cont…
Let $D$ be a compact Kähler manifold with trivial canonical bundle and $Γ$ be a finite cyclical group of order $m$ acting on $\mathbb{C} \times D$ by biholomorphisms, where the action on the first factor is generated by rotation of angle $2π/m$. Furthermore, suppose that $Ω_D$ is a trivialisation of the canonical bundle such that $Γ$ preserves the holomorphic form $dz \wedge Ω_D$ on $\mathbb C \times D$, with $z$ denoting the coordinate on $\mathbb{C}$. The main result of this article is the construction of new examples of gradient steady Kähler-Ricci solitons on certain crepant resolutions of…
The connection between Yang--Mills gauge fields on $4$-dimensional orientable compact Riemannian manifolds and modified Lévy Laplacians is studied. A modified Lévy Laplacian is obtained from the Lévy Laplacian by the action of an infinite dimensional rotation. Under the assumption that the 4-manifold has a nontrivial restricted holonomy group of the bundle of self-dual 2-forms, the following is proved. There is a modified Lévy Laplacian such that a parallel transport in some vector bundle over the 4-manifold is a solution of the Laplace equation for this modified Lévy Laplacian if and only if …
We investigate instantons on manifolds with Killing spinors and their cones. Examples of manifolds with Killing spinors include nearly Kaehler 6-manifolds, nearly parallel G_2-manifolds in dimension 7, Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, and 3-Sasakian manifolds. We construct a connection on the tangent bundle over these manifolds which solves the instanton equation, and also show that the instanton equation implies the Yang-Mills equation, despite the presence of torsion. We then construct instantons on the cones over these manifolds, and lift them to solutions of heterotic supergravity. Amongst our s…
We show that the heterotic supersymmetry (Killing spinor equations) and the anomaly cancellation imply the heterotic equations of motion in dimensions five, six, seven, eight if and only if the connection on the tangent bundle is an instanton. For heterotic compactifications in dimension six this reduces the choice of that connection to the unique SU(3) instanton on a manifold with stable tangent bundle of degree zero.
We consider cones over manifolds admitting real Killing spinors and instanton equations on connections on vector bundles over these manifolds. Such cones are manifolds with special (reduced) holonomy. We generalize the scalar ansatz for a connection proposed by Harland and Nolle in such a way that instantons are parameterized by constrained matrix-valued functions. Our ansatz reduces instanton equations to a matrix model equations which can be further reduced to Newtonian mechanics with particle trajectories obeying first-order gradient flow equations. Generalizations to Kaehler-Einstein manif…
Suppose $(X, g)$ is a compact, spin Riemannian 7-manifold, with Dirac operator $D$. Let $G$ be SU$(m)$ or U$(m)$, and $E\to X$ be a rank $m$ complex bundle with $G$-structure. Write ${\mathcal B}_E$ for the infinite-dimensional moduli space of connections on $E$, modulo gauge. There is a natural principal ${\mathbb Z}_2$-bundle $O^D_E\to{\mathcal B}_E$ parametrizing orientations of det$\,D_{{\rm Ad }A}$ for twisted elliptic operators $D_{{\rm Ad }A}$ at each $[A]$ in ${\mathcal B}_E$. A theorem of Walpuski shows $O^D_E$ is trivializable. We prove that if we choose an orientation for det$\,D$, …
This is the first step in an attempt at a deformation theory for $G_{2}-$instantons with $1-$dimensional conic singularities. Under a set of model data, the linearization yields a self-adjoint first order elliptic operator $P$ on a certain bundle over $\mathbb{S}^{5}$. As a dimension reduction, the operator $P$ also arises from Hermitian Yang-Mills connections with isolated conic singularities on a Calabi-Yau $3$-fold. Using the Quaternion structure in the Sasakian geometry of $\mathbb{S}^{5}$, we describe the set of all eigenvalues of $P$ (denoted by $Spec P$). We show that $SpecP$ consists o…
