In the present paper we consider a special class of locally trivial bundles with fiber a matrix algebra. On the set of such bundles over a finite $CW$-complex we define a relevant equivalence relation. The obtained stable theory gives us a geometric description of the H-space structure $\BSU_\otimes$ on $\BSU$ related to the tensor product of virtual $\SU$-bundles of virtual dimension 1.
In the present paper we study bundles equipped with extra homotopy conditions, in particular so-called simplicial $n$-bundles. It is shown that (under some condition) the classifying space of 1-bundles is the double coset space of some finite dimensional Lie group. We also establish some relation between our bundles and C*-algebras.
The purpose of this paper is to give some solutions for the classification problem in fibration theory by using the homotopy sequences of fibrations (sequences of $n$-th homotopy groups $ π_{n}(S,s_{o}) $ of total spaces of fibrations). In particular, to show the role of homotopy sequence of $n$-th homotopy to get the required fiber map in Fadell-Dold theorem such that the restriction of this fiber map on some fiber spaces is a homotopy equivalence.
Given an appropriate diagram of left Quillen functors between model categories, one can define a notion of homotopy fiber product, but one might ask if it is really the correct one. Here, we show that this homotopy pullback is well-behaved with respect to translating it into the setting of more general homotopy theories, given by complete Segal spaces, where we have well-defined homotopy pullbacks.
We establish a general "affine representability" result in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory over a general base. We apply this result to obtain representability results for vector bundles in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. Our results simplify and significantly generalize F. Morel's ${\mathbb A}^1$-representability theorem for vector bundles.
We propose a simplified definition of Quillen's fibration sequences in a pointed model category that fully captures the theory, although it is completely independent of the concept of action. This advantage arises from the understanding that the homotopy theory of the model category's arrow category contains all homotopical information about its long fibration sequences.
Let $R$ be a ring spectrum and $ E\to X$ an $R$-module bundle of rank $n$. Our main result is to identify the homotopy type of the group-like monoid of homotopy automorphisms of this bundle, $hAut^R(E)$. This will generalize the result regarding $R$-line bundles previously proven by the authors. The main application is the calculation of the homotopy type of $BGL_n(End ((L))$ where $L \to X$ is any $R$-line bundle, and $End (L)$ is the ring spectrum of endomorphisms. In the case when such a bundle is the fiberwise suspension spectrum of a principal bundle over a manifold, $G \to P \to M$, this…
We give new homotopy theoretic criteria for deciding when a fibration with homotopy finite fibers admits a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers. The criteria lead to a new and unexpected result about homeomorphism groups of manifolds. A tool used in the proof is a surjective splitting of the assembly map for Waldhausen's functor A(X). We also give concrete examples of fibrations having a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers but which fail to admit a compact fiber smoothing. The examples are detected by algebraic K-theory invariant…
In their construction of the topological index for flat vector bundles, Atiyah, Patodi and Singer associate to each flat vector bundle a particular $\mathbb{C/Z}$-$K$-theory class. This assignment determines a map, up to weak homotopy, from $K_{a}\mathbb{C}$, the algebraic $K$-theory space of the complex numbers, to $F_{t,\mathbb{C/Z}}$, the homotopy fiber of the Chern character. In this paper, we give evidence for the conjecture that this map can be represented by an infinite loop map. The result of the paper implies a refined Bismut-Lott index theorem for a compact smooth bundle $E\rightarro…
We construct a motivic homotopy theory for rigid analytic varieties with the rigid analytic affine line $\mathbb{A} ^1_\mathrm{rig}$ as an interval object. This motivic homotopy theory is inspired from, but not equal to, Ayoub's motivic homotopy theory for rigid analytic varieties. Working in the so constructed homotopy theory, we prove that a homotopy classification of vector bundles of rank $n$ over rigid analytic quasi-Stein spaces follows from $\mathbb{A}^1_\mathrm{rig}$-homotopy invariance of vector bundles. This $\mathbb{A}^1_\mathrm{rig}$-homotopy invariance is equivalent to a rigid ana…
In this paper, we will give the polyhedron property role to satisfy fiber homotopically equivalent relation in fiber bundle theory over suspensions of polyhedron space.
Motivated by the theory of representability classes by submanifolds, we study the rational homotopy theory of Thom spaces of vector bundles. We first give a Thom isomorphism at the level of rational homotopy, extending work of Felix-Oprea-Tanré by removing hypothesis of nilpotency of the base and orientability of the bundle. Then, we use the theory of weight decompositions in rational homotopy to give a criterion of representability of classes by submanifolds, generalising results of Papadima. Along the way, we study issues of formality and give formulas for Massey products of Thom spaces. Las…
In this paper we classify the homotopy classes of proper maps $E\rightarrow \mathbb R^k$, where $E$ is a vector bundle over a compact Hausdorff space. As a corollary we compute the homotopy classes of proper maps $\mathbb R^n\rightarrow \mathbb R^k$. We find a stability range of such maps. We conclude with some remarks on framed submanifolds of non-compact manifolds, the relationship with proper homotopy classes of maps and the Pontryagin-Thom construction.
We establish a relative version of the abstract "affine representability" theorem in ${\mathbb A}^1$--homotopy theory from Part I of this paper. We then prove some ${\mathbb A}^1$--invariance statements for generically trivial torsors under isotropic reductive groups over infinite fields analogous to the Bass--Quillen conjecture for vector bundles. Putting these ingredients together, we deduce representability theorems for generically trivial torsors under isotropic reductive groups and for associated homogeneous spaces in ${\mathbb A}^1$--homotopy theory.
The work of Hausel proves that the Białynicki-Birula stratification of the moduli space of rank two Higgs bundles coincides with its Shatz stratification. He uses that to estimate some homotopy groups of the moduli space of $k$-Higgs bundles of rank two. Unfortunately, those two stratifications do not coincide in general. Here, the objective is to present a different proof of the stabilization of the homotopy groups of $\mathcal{M}^k(2,d)$, and generalize it to $\mathcal{M}^k(3,d)$, the moduli spaces of $k$-Higgs bundles of degree $d$, and ranks two and three respectively, using the results fr…
Small Bénabou's bicategories and, in particular, Mac Lane's monoidal categories, have well-understood classifying spaces, which give geometric meaning to their cells. This paper contains some contributions to the study of the relationship between bicategories and the homotopy types of their classifying spaces. Mainly, generalizations are given of Quillen's Theorems A and B to lax functors between bicategories.
Let F denote the homotopy fiber of a map f:K-->L of 2-reduced simplicial sets. Using as input data the strongly homotopy coalgebra structure of the chain complexes of K and L, we construct a small, explicit chain algebra, the homology of which is isomorphic as a graded algebra to the homology of GF, the simplicial (Kan) loop group on F. To construct this model, we develop machinery for modeling the homotopy fiber of a morphism of chain Hopf algebras. Essential to our construction is a generalization of the operadic description of the category DCSH of chain coalgebras and of strongly homotopy c…
We study aspects of the A^1-homotopy classification problem in dimensions >= 3 and, to this end, we investigate the problem of computing A^1-homotopy groups of some A^1-connected smooth varieties of dimension >=. Using these computations, we construct pairs of A^1-connected smooth proper varieties all of whose A^1-homotopy groups are abstractly isomorphic, yet which are not A^1-weakly equivalent. The examples come from pairs of Zariski locally trivial projective space bundles over projective spaces and are of the smallest possible dimension. Projectivizations of vector bundles give rise to A^1…
Given a fiber bundle, we construct a differential graded Lie algebra model for the classifying space of the monoid of homotopy equivalences of the base covered by a fiberwise isomorphism of the total space.
We introduce a topological variant of the Grothendieck construction which serves to represent every fiber bundle over an Alexandroff space. Using this result we give a classification theorem for fiber bundles over Alexandroff spaces with T$_0$ fiber and we construct a universal bundle for bundles with T$_0$ fiber over posets which are cofibrant objects of the category of small categories. Moreover, we prove that our construction induces an equivalence of categories between a suitable category of functors and the category of fiber bundles over a fixed Alexandroff space. In addition, we prove th…
Let G be a discrete group for which the classifying space for proper G-actions is finite-dimensional. We find a space W such that for any such G, the classifying space PBG for proper G-bundles has the homotopy type of the W-nullification of BG. We use this to deduce some results concerning PBG and in some cases where there is a good model for PBG we obtain information about the BZ/p-nullification of BG.
We examine the relation between the gauge groups of $\mathrm{SU}(n)$- and $\mathrm{PU}(n)$-bundles over $S^{2i}$, with $2\leq i\leq n$, particularly when $n$ is a prime. As special cases, for $\mathrm{PU}(5)$-bundles over $S^4$, we show that there is a rational or $p$-local equivalence $\mathcal{G}_{2,k}\simeq_{(p)}\mathcal{G}_{2,l}$ for any prime $p$ if, and only if, $(120,k)=(120,l)$, while for $\mathrm{PU}(3)$-bundles over $S^6$ there is an integral equivalence $\mathcal{G}_{3,k}\simeq\mathcal{G}_{3,l}$ if, and only if, $(120,k)=(120,l)$.
Let $M_{l,m}$ be the total space of the $S^3$-bundle over $S^4$ classified by the element $lσ+mρ\in{π_4(SO(4))}$, $l,m\in\mathbb Z$. In this paper we study the homotopy theory of gauge groups of principal $G$-bundles over manifolds $M_{l,m}$ when $G$ is a simply connected simple compact Lie group such that $π_6(G)=0$. That is, $G$ is one of the following groups: $SU(n)$ $(n\geq4)$, $Sp(n)$ $(n\geq2)$, $Spin(n)$ $(n\geq5)$, $F_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$. If the integral homology of $M_{l,m}$ is torsion-free, we describe the homotopy type of the gauge groups over $M_{l,m}$ as products of recognisab…
We characterize the class of homotopy pull-back squares by means of elementary closure properties. The so called Puppe theorem which identifies the homotopy fiber of certain maps constructed as homotopy colimits is a straightforward consequence. Likewise we characterize the class of squares which are homotopy pull-backs "up to Bousfield localization". This yields a generalization of Puppe's theorem which allows to identify the homotopy type of the localized homotopy fiber. When the localization functor is homological localization this is one of the key ingredients in the group completion theor…
The main purpose this work is to study the minimal fixed point set of fiber-preserving maps for spaces which are fiber bundles over the circle and the fiber is the torus. Using the one-parameter fixed point theory is possible to describe these sets in terms of the fundamental group and the induced homomorphism.
We present an elementary approach to local combinatorial formulae for the Euler class of a fiber-oriented triangulated spherical fiber bundle. The approach is based on sections averaging technique and very basic knowledge of simplicial (co)homology theory. Our formulae are close relatives of those by N. Mnëv.
The notion of a (stably) decomposable fiber bundle is introduced. In low dimensions, for torus fiber bundles over a circle the notion translates into a property of elements of the special linear group of integral matrices. We give a complete characterization of the stably decomposable torus fiber bundle of fiber-dimension less than 4 over the circle.
We discuss the relationship between the ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy sheaves of ${\mathbb A}^n \setminus 0$ and the problem of splitting off a trivial rank $1$ summand from a rank $n$-vector bundle. We begin by computing $π_3^{{\mathbb A}^1}({\mathbb A}^3 \setminus 0)$, and providing a host of related computations of "non-stable" ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy sheaves. We then use our computation to deduce that a rank $3$ vector bundle on a smooth affine $4$-fold over an algebraically closed field having characteristic unequal to $2$ splits off a trivial rank $1$ summand if and only if its third Chern c…

Generalizing a definition of homotopy fiber products of model categories, we give a definition of the homotopy limit of a diagram of left Quillen functors between model categories. As has been previously shown for homotopy fiber products, we prove that such a homotopy limit does in fact correspond to the usual homotopy limit, when we work in a more general model for homotopy theories in which they can be regarded as objects of a model category.
Homotopy type theory is a version of Martin-Löf type theory taking advantage of its homotopical models. In particular, we can use and construct objects of homotopy theory and reason about them using higher inductive types. In this article, we construct the real projective spaces, key players in homotopy theory, as certain higher inductive types in homotopy type theory. The classical definition of RP(n), as the quotient space identifying antipodal points of the n-sphere, does not translate directly to homotopy type theory. Instead, we define RP(n) by induction on n simultaneously with its tauto…
We analyse the homotopy types of gauge groups of principal U(n)-bundles associated to pseudo Real vector bundles in the sense of Atiyah. We provide satisfactory homotopy decompositions of these gauge groups into factors in which the homotopy groups are well known. Therefore, we substantially build upon the low dimensional homotopy groups as provided in a paper by I. Biswas, J. Huisman, and J. Hurtubise.
Let $T$ be a torus and $B$ a compact $T-$manifold. Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson show in \cite{GKM} that if $B$ is (what was subsequently called) a GKM manifold, then there exists a simple combinatorial description of the equivariant cohomology ring $H_T^*(B)$ as a subring of $H_T^*(B^T)$. In this paper we prove an analogue of this result for $T-$equivariant fiber bundles: we show that if $M$ is a $T-$manifold and $π\colon M \to B$ a fiber bundle for which $π$ intertwines the two $T-$actions, there is a simple combinatorial description of $H_T^*(M)$ as a subring of $H_T^*(π^{-1}(B^T))$. Us…
Suppose that f:V->W is an embedding of closed oriented manifolds whose normal bundle has the structure of a complex vector bundle. It is well known in both complex and symplectic geometry that one can then construct a manifold W' which is the blow-up of W along V. Assume that dim(W)>2.dim(V)+2 and that H^1(f) is injective. We construct an algebraic model of the rational homotopy type of the blow-up W' from an algebraic model of the embedding and the Chern classes of the normal bundle. This implies that if the space W is simply connected then the rational homotopy type of W' depends only on the…
Let $\rm{Aut}(p)$ denote the space of all self-fibre homotopy equivalences of a principal $G$-bundle $p: E\rightarrow X$ of simply connected CW complexes with $E$ finite. When $G$ is a compact connected topological group, we show that there exists an inequality $$n-{\rm N}(p)\leq {\rm Hnil}_{\mathbb{Q}}({\rm{Aut}}(p)_0)\leq n$$ for any space $X$, where $n$ is the number of non-trivial rational homotopy groups of $G$ and ${\rm N}(p)$ is defined in Section 2. In particular, ${\rm Hnil}_{\mathbb{Q}}({\rm{Aut}}(p)_{0})=n$ if $p$ is a fibre-homotopy trivial bundle and X is finite.
This paper presents a unified view of manifolds and fiber bundles, which, while superficially different, have strong parallels. It introduces the notions of an m-atlas and of a local coordinate space, and shows that special cases are equivalent to fiber bundles and manifolds. Along the way it defines some convenient notation, defines categories of atlases, and constructs potentially useful functors.
Quillen showed that simplicial sets form a model category (with appropriate choices of three classes of morphisms), which organized the homotopy theory of simplicial sets. His proof is very difficult and uses even the classification theory of principal bundles. Thus, Goerss-Jardine appealed to topological methods for the verification. In this paper we give a new proof of this organizing theorem of simplicial homotopy theory which is elementary in the sense that it does not use the classifying theory of principal bundles or appeal to topological methods.
We study the spaces of embeddings $S^m\hookrightarrow R^n$ and those of long embeddings $R^m\hookrightarrow R^n$, i.e. embeddings of a fixed behavior outside a compact set. More precisely we look at the homotopy fiber of the inclusion of these spaces to the spaces of immersions. We find a natural fiber sequence relating these spaces. We also compare the $L_\infty$-algebras of diagrams that encode their rational homotopy type, when the codimension $n-m\geq 3$.
We present a local combinatorial formula for the Euler class of a $n$-dimen\-si\-onal PL spherical fiber bundle as a rational number $e_{\it CH}$ associated to a chain of $n+1$ abstract subdivisions of abstract $n$-spherical PL cell complexes. The number $e_{\it CH}$ is a combinatorial (or matrix) Hodge theory twisting cochain in Guy Hirsch's homology model of the bundle associated with PL combinatorics of the bundle.
We show that the prequantum line bundle on the moduli space of flat $SU(2)$ connections on a closed Riemann surface of positive genus has degree 1. It then follows from work of Lawton and the second author that the classifying map for this line bundle induces a homotopy equivalence between the stable moduli space of flat $SU(N)$ connections, in the limit as $N$ tends to infinity, and $\mathbb{C}P^\infty$. Applications to the stable moduli space of flat unitary connections are also discussed.
Hurwitz spaces are homotopy quotients of the braid group action on the moduli space of principal bundles over a punctured plane. By considering a certain model for this homotopy quotient we build an aspherical topological operad that we call the little bundles operad. As our main result, we describe this operad as a groupoid-valued operad in terms of generators and relations and prove that the categorical little bundles algebras are precisely Turaev's crossed categories. Moreover, we prove that the evaluation on the circle of a homotopical two-dimensional equivariant topolological field theory…
We describe a new relation between the topology of hypersurface complements, Milnor fibers and degree of gradient mappings. In particular we show that any projective hypersurface has affine parts which are bouquets of spheres. The main tools are the polar curves and the affine Lefschetz theory developped by H. Hamm, D.T. Lê and A. Némethi. In the special case of the hyperplane arrangements, we strengthen some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and obtain the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see Randell math.AT/0011101 for another proof of this result). This is then…
Let $k$ be a field with separable closure $\bar{k}\supset k$, and let $X$ be a qcqs $k$-scheme. We use the theory of profinite Galois categories developed by Barwick-Glasman-Haine to provide a quick conceptual proof that the sequences \begin{equation*} Π_{<\infty}^{\mathrm{\acute{e}t}}(X_{\bar{k}}) \to Π_{<\infty}^{\mathrm{\acute{e}t}}(X) \to \mathrm{BGal}(\bar{k}/k) \qquad \text{and} \qquad \widehatΠ{}_{\infty}^{\mathrm{\acute{e}t}}(X_{\bar{k}}) \to \widehatΠ{}_{\infty}^{\mathrm{\acute{e}t}}(X) \to \mathrm{BGal}(\bar{k}/k) \end{equation*} of protruncated and profinite étale homotopy types are…
We prove that every finite connected simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to the quotient of a contractible manifold by proper actions of a virtually torsion-free group. As a corollary, we obtain that every finite connected simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to the classifying space for proper bundles of some virtual Poincaré duality group.
We study the rational homotopy of the moduli space ${\mathcal N}_X$ of stable vector bundles of rank two and fixed determinant of odd degree over a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g\geq 2$. The symplectic group $Aut(H_1(X,{\mathbb Z}))=Sp(2g,{\mathbb Z})$ has a natural action on the rational homotopy groups $π_n({\mathcal N}_X) \otimes {\mathbb Q}$. We prove that this action extends to an action of $Sp(2g,{\mathbb C})$ on $π_n({\mathcal N}_X) \otimes {\mathbb C}$. We also show that $π_n({\mathcal N}_X) \otimes {\mathbb C}$ is a non-trivial $Sp(2g,{\mathbb C})$-representation fo…
